I just had the pleasure of reading a newly released book, Don't Wave Goodbye, published by Praeger Greenwood, June 2004 (1-800-225-5800) which offers the reader first person accounts of the "American" Kindertransports -- about one thousand unaccompanied children rescued from the Nazis during the Holocaust by American individuals and organizations. All the material was written by the children and their rescuers and are their own accounts. The children begin by telling through letters and remembrances of the de-humanization of the Jews; the systematic removal of rights, property and hope by the Nazis and Hitler. They go on to relate to us how their desperate parents were willing to send them to America in order to save them when they themselves could not leave. This was a daunting task as it required getting through a bureaucracy of red tape which sometimes took months and years. Then the accounts describe the childrens' voyages to the US, the culture shock and assimilation into western culture; the desperate searches for information of the loved ones they left behind which often ended quite tragically; and finally the journeys back to their homelands to find closure and peace. Don't Wave Goodbye offered up these accounts which were sometimes very painful to tell and painful to hear in order to help us appreciate the freedom that we have, realize that it is a precious thing and never take it for granted. These children were the lucky ones. They escaped the Nazis but so many more of them didn't. Don't Wave Goodbye shakes the reader into noncomplacency and demands action when human dignity is trampled into the ground. Protect freedom at all costs. Never take it for granted!

Almost one third of this book is devoted to background, such as geography, econony, political system, and society. It is space and time well spent. The entire book reads quite easily, and I often had a hard time putting it down.

such infamous libel! Dr. St. John Gogarty has a fine classical Irish Jesuit education. Call him not by the shameful SASSENACH!!

Remarkable insights into his wit, into James JOyce, his complex friend, and into Ulysses and what inspired the character of the mercurial Buck Mulligan

Schopenhauer's influence on T.S. Eliot

I am writing a research thesis on how Schopenhauer influenced T.S. Eliot's "Four Quartets," so this book showed how T.S. Eliot read and discussed Schopenhauer in the Seminar (p. 120). Eliot was one of nine other people taking the seminar with Josiah Royce and he was clearly influenced by his reading and discussion of Kant and post-Kantian philosophers in his writing.

This is the best specialized encyclopedia I've ever come across on any subject. My congratulations to Mr. Tabachnick. I only wish he could have published it years earlier. This book has inspired me to reread Seven Pillars once again. There is virtually no important event or reference in Lawrence's life and work that can't be illuminated by this encyclopedia.

THE LOGIC OF PRIVATIZATION: THE CASE OF TELECOMMUNICATIONS IN THE SOUTHERN CONE OF LATIN AMERICA.

A timely analysis of four Latin American countries' attempts to sell their public telecommunications companies during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Chile's divestiture of the Chilean Telephone Company was implemented quietly and with little public opposition. In Brazil the privatization of Telebras never emerged from the preliminary debates. In Uruguay heated opposition emerged to the sale of Antel from unions and other interest groups, most powerfully pensioners, upset with the government's reform policies in other areas, and the measure was rejected in a public plebiscite. And in Argentina the legislature repudiated the first attempt at privatization of Entel but ratified a second attempt after the opposition, which had changed its attitude toward the policy, gained power. Molano concludes that the key to success or failure of privatization was not external but lay in the domestic political arena, principally in the political clout of the chief executive and his ability to act early in his administration. But he worries that the influx of foreign capital and new technology, if it should slow as it did in the middle part of the century, will provoke a new round of renationalizations.

When I read the introduction to this book, I knew I had a winner. The text is user friendly and a perfect balance of deep insight into the human condition and the sometimes humorous ways that myth showcases those concerns. The storytelling is top-notch. Reading feels more like a conversation and the size of each entry lends itself to a lunch break or quick evening read. I read an entry and spend some time thinking about how it applies to my life. Many mythology books are daunting and seem written for the academic world. This is an entirely different book. It was written for the rest of us.

Most people who have any familiarity of BTW have heard the oversimplified stereotype that he was supposedly an "Uncle Tom", etc. This shows the fallacy of that thinking. Here, BTW tells off the Governor of South Carolina in 1895 for cutting off funds for Black schools "if you think education is expensive-try ignorance!" and socks it to the Louisiana Legislature for allowing Blacks to be lynched "I heard a boy say "today I have seen a man hanged and I shall soon see one burned. Before I hear such a remark from one of my sons I would rather see him in his grave." read it, and you'll be surprised.
