"I'd die a thousand deaths before I'd betray a friend"

Those are the immortal words spoken by 21-year-old Sam Davis, the Confederate scout (often mislabled as a spy) who was about to be hanged on Nov. 27, 1863. His Union captors, under the command of Gen. G.M. Dodge, pleaded with Davis to reveal the name of the leader of "Coleman's Scouts", which was a select group of Confederate scouts (of which Davis belonged) that went behind Union lines in Middle Tennessee to gather information on Union forces gathered there. The leader of this group was Capt. H.B. Shaw, who went by the name of E. Coleman to mislead the Yankees who were always searching for him and his men.

Later Sam Davis was asked to tell who gave him the secret documents that were found on him when he was captured. Davis refused to reveal ANY information to Gen. Dodge, saying,"I know, general, that I will have to die, but I will not tell where I got the information, and there is no power on earth that can make me tell. I am doing my duty as a soldier, and if I have to die I shall be doing my duty to God and my country."

This book, first published in 1947, provides a great summary of his life, as well as a section on monuments and tributes to Davis following the war. And it also has a detailed genealogy of Davis' family. There are also several great photos showing the interior and exterior of the Sam Davis home, which has thankfully been restored and remains open to the public to this day. I've visited and toured his home many times, and I highly recommend that any tourists traveling nearby (it's located in Smyrna, TN) take time to see that beautiful place.

Unfortunately, this book is out-of-print and has become quite rare. I myself have only seen two copies for sale, one for $27.00 (-the one I bought) and one for $75.00. However, this book is defintely worth searching for, as it is one of the few Sam Davis biographies that I know of. I also recommend "The story of Sam Davis" by W.B. Romine, "Lest we forget: Sam Davis" by William F. Currotto, and "Sam: the Civil War experiences of Private Samuel Davis" by Beverly A. Rude. This book is highly recommended for all history buffs.

Although John Gray is known mainly for his poetry, this volume collects many of his prose works. His short novel Park is included in full, as are reviews and short stories collected from various sources. Many are reprinted here for the first time since their initial publication. This is an invaluable companion volume to Ian Fletcher's collection of Gray's poetry, and an excellent insight into a much neglected writer from Britain's late Victorian era.

A very straightforward approach to relationships. The book gives down-to earth advice that anyone can easily understand and implement. The format is like a workbook that gives you space to complete exercises on each step so that you can get the most out of the information for your personal situation. I particularly liked what they call "The Format" which is a communication technique for conflict resolution. A great manual to help you choose and develop your relationships.

Link from the Essay to the Two Treatises
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2002-07-08
This is an outstanding volume from one of the most important thinkers of Western civilization. This is a bridge linking the two major classics from Locke, An Essay concerning Human Understanding and the Two Treatises of Government. In this volume, we see Locke's dependence on Stoic philosophy (especially that of Seneca) and the effect that Aristotelian philosophy had on him.

"As the Strength of the Body lies chiefly in being able to endure Hardships, so also does that of the Mind. And the great Principle and Foundation of all Vertue and Worth, is . . . That a Man is able to deny himself his own Desires, cross his own Inclinations, and purely follow what Reason directs as best, tho' that appetite lean the other way." And how does one do this? Locke's answer is through education (i.e., through habit).

Anyone wishing to understand the thought and philosophy of Locke, can not afford to ignore this volume in the corpus of Lockean writings. This edition is a very scholarly edition, there is another modern edition available as well. To bad the editors of the Clarendon Edition of the Works of John Locke are not very organized, at the rate these volumes are being produced, the complete writings will not be available during my lifetime.

The world needs a modern edition of the writings of Locke, he is too important a thinker not to have this - if nothing else, for us inspiring Lockean scholars. :o)

Fundamental critique of liberal fundamentalism
Helpful Votes: 17 out of 37 total.
Review Date: 2001-03-12
Gray has done everyone a great service by skewering the rights based liberal philosophy of thinkers like John Rawls. Though it seems that Gray (like most Anglo-Saxons) is unaware of the Continental critique (think Habermas), he still does a good job of making some readers aware of the Enlightenment project that seems to grip too many people. Luc Ferry does a better job of this in my mind because he nods to the critiques and tries to move towards a solution. Unfortunately it may be that Americans find his Frenchness offensive. In that case Gray's work here has opened the possibility of moving beyond the dialectic of enlightment (sorry Frankfurt School)and towards one of "modus vivendi". It also doesn't share the faults that his earlier book, "False Dawn" had, an overweening attempt to criticize without ever coming to some sort of solution.

Very Detailed Book on Real Estate Investing

Review Date: 2008-02-24
Having read the third edition of this same book, which was very good, I found this to be a more detailed and thorough revision. The way in which the information is portrayed guides the reader through the steps of investing and how to not only succeed, but to protect themselves from the failures that many novice and seasoned real estate investors fall victims to. If you want to know about investing in Real Estate, this is the book for you.

Nothing Earth Shattering

Review Date: 2008-01-03
Having read a number of different real estate investing books, I am happy to report that this one is definitely above average. The author does make an effort to cover many facets (though perhaps too many?) of real estate investing. If you are looking for an introduction to real estate investing in general, this is a good place to start. If, on the other hand, you are looking for something new or different, you may want to look elsewhere. This book does a good job of hitting the basics, but it's broad coverage means that at times it is lacking in detail.

Best Book on Subject, PERIOD

Review Date: 2007-11-15
This book is the best book on the subject of real estate investing. I encourage anyone with an intrest in real estate investing to pick this book up. This book is in its fifth edition because the information within every edition is simply the best, most well-written, complete, and up-to-date information in text ever. It helps also, to note that the authors have Phd's from prestigious universities. They teach at some of the most elite learning institutions around, write editorials and articles for newspapers and magazines (including the Wall Strreet Journal), and also work with Donald Trump himself. I think success like that speaks for itself-how many real estate "gurus" can say that?? Not many!! This book will definitely not disappoint and can by itself, lead you on a path to great success AND wealth in the world of real estate investing.

Sometimes text books can be so fascinating that you can't wait to read the next paragraph and learn something new. This is not one of those text books. It is filled with lots of junk that only makes the book thicker and heavier but contributes nothing to your understanding. So you must actively read and take notes on the important stuff or you will fall asleep a lot. This book contains some very nice images and helpful diagrams so know them and use them as a guide when you take notes. This is just a general introductory text, so it's a shame that it's so large. Future editions should be released in cheaper smaller volumes that deal only with certain topics, or they could just cut out all of the junk. You might consider buying an earlier edition or a cheaper international paperback edition because they aren't much different from this edition. I haven't seen the latest edition, but I'm sure the only changes were the pointless interviews and some new and more expensive pictures.
