John has put together a book packed with information and beautiful pictures. Confused about the various art covers on Girks' series books? Problem solved. John does an excellent job explaining the different covers and each one is illustrated in beautiful color photographs.

Buy it for the information. Share it for the photographs. The pictures alone make this a great book for the coffee table. Even non collectors will enjoy seeing the beautiful dust jackets from the books they enjoyed as children.

Worth so much more than the price. John presents his material in a straight forward easy to understand format. John's book is a must have for serious collectors, but non collectors will enjoy it just as much.

I bought it, and I love it. The only regret I have is I wish I would have bought it sooner.

Worth the price for the pictures alone

The title of this book may mislead some readers to believe that it covers many girls' series books, when in reality it covers only the following: Nancy Drew, Judy Bolton, Kay Tracey, Beverly Gray, Penny Parker, and Ruth Fielding. (The subtitle of the book indicates that these series are featured, but it is still not necessarily clear that they are the only series in the book.) That being said, this book is clearly a labor of love by a person who knows what he's talking about. There is intelligent discussion on collecting books, cleaning old books, estimating values, and different formats.

And then... the pictures. This book includes full color photographs of all the book covers in their various incarnations. For instance, on one page are placed the FOUR different covers for Nancy Drew's "The Clue of the Broken Locket." It's fun to see how the covers evolved over the years, and the author offers much historical information about the cover artists, the Stratemeyer Syndicate in general, and the various editions in which the books have been offered. The other series mentioned above are treated in a similar manner. Overall this is an attractively designed book that can give pleasure whether you browse leisurely or read closely. Enjoy!

Book is renamed for New edition! Grrrr

I ordered Secret of Collecting Girls Series books as well as All About Collecting Girls Series Books, both by John Axe... Well, after ordering both of the books, I found out that Secret of.... is just the first edition. It contains info on Ruth Fielding, Nancy Drew, Judy Bolton, Beverly Gray, Kay Tracey, Penny Parker and I think Cherry Ames. {I say "I think" because the book got returned, but I know it at least goes up to Penny Parker} Problem is, this EXACT SAME INFORMATION is found in All About Collecting... with the addition of three or four other girls' series books. I felt [disappointed] because the two books are obviously just a first edition and a second edition with some added material. I've never heard of a 2nd edition being RENAMED something else, albeit a similar title. So word to the wise. If you don't care about the other series mentioned in All About (Vicki Barr, Connie Blair, & Dana Girls) then get this book and save a few dollars. But do NOT get them both thinking they are "companion" books as inferred on several web sites.

This book should please those who are looking for a colorful book to keep high school students interested in what many might consider a dry subject. It covers a host of topics and issues and will lead students to think. However, it is marred by its appalling ignorance of economic analysis. The worst example is in Chapter 2 where it offers up some comments on the "idea of profit maximization". Any student who has had a principles course in economics is likely to see these comments for what they are, namely the kind of rhetoric one would expect from someone manning one of the ubiquitous anti-globalization tables at a large university.

Finally...A Sensible Explanation

Finally there has come upon the scene an author who provides a a sensible explanation to the knotty problem of correlating the doctrine of predestination to the modern Christian. In his concise, pithy manner, Rev. Donald Gray cuts through the misconceptions and erroneous dogmas that has plagued the church for ages.
Penning this work under the obvious tutalege of the Holy Spirit, the author uses Biblical and everyday examples to demonstrate how God's plan for an individual's life is made manifest.
Brushing aside the flawed dogmas of Calvinism, fatalism and lethalism, Rev. Gray paints word pictures of God's love, acceptance, grace and hope. And thereby clearly defines to all the truth about God's will.

I went to the publisher's site and read the book excerpt, and found that the author cannot even spell "Arminians" correctly; rather, he spells it as "Armenians." I wonder how much study he has done on this subject, since a decent amount of study would have him encounter the word dozens, if not hundreds, of times.

Of course, this point alone does not show that the author is an incompetent idiot or something like that. You will have to read his book to examine his arguments to decide.

However, on this subject of predestination, I would recommend two authors over any other, and they are Gordon Clark and Vincent Cheung. Clark has a book entitled PREDESTINATION -- search the web for "trinity foundation" and you will find him. All of Cheung's books are free for download -- search the web for "vincent cheung" and you will find him.

The worst book I have ever read

Review Date: 2006-11-22
I got this book because of the fame of John Gary and the big title of the book. I managed to go through half of the book and finally, I cannot stand it and throw it away.

Basically, this book gives you 9 principles to bring miracles to your life, like eating healthy, love as if it is your first love, blablablah. Yeah, it is true, but it is also totally vain and misleading. For example, everybody knows that if you eat healthy food and work out intensively four times a week, two hours each time, you will definitely be fit as supermodel. But, can anybody really do that if somebody just told you to do so? It has to be tricky to deal with like finding the right and affordable workout program, finding the incentive, etc.

What I found ridiculous is that John kept saying that if you believe in his nine principles, then you can do whatever you want. Even superman cannot do that! Well, John, have you accomplished all of your wishes in your life? Belief is necessary for any success, but it is not a guarantee for all successes.

Also, John made some metaphors to prove his points, but most of them don't make enough or any sense, at least to me. Another reason I hate the book is that it takes the first 1/3 to boast his former achievements, like 12 bestsellers, without touching the core topic of this book.

If you are looking for practical miracles in this book, I assure you that you will be practically disappointed, period.

I enjoyed this book but if you are a person that doesn't like John Gray then don't waste any of our time reading this book only to down it afterward. I think the book is great and being a Reiki Master I loved the section about recharging technique in which I tried and really felt the energy flowing from my elbows to my fingertips. I haven't tried connecting to the energy in this manner before and really felt the affects for a while afterward. I am going to use the technique often.

Great book for relaxing in the evening after dinner with or early in the morning when your mind is clear, it's a keeper in our house!

Albert Einstein's famous quote sums up the message of this book: "There are only two ways to live your life.
One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is."

A large part describes the cultural and historical changes that have taken place that now allow miracles to take place by common people - rather than by the stereotypical monks that live in the mountains.

Smashing old and limiting beliefs with inspiring and liberating ideas, John Gray provides nine techniques that'll
allow you to use these nine principles to create miracles in your life in a simple, practical manner.

One technique, however, may be a bit superficial and impractical: The Blockbuster Technique.

In this short chapter, John Gray describes a familiar way of healing: writing a mock letter to whomever you are feeling negative towards. Gray provides a chart of "blocks" that are common to most. Examples include: Resentment, Depression, Confusion, etc. Your letter should explore the feelings attached to your particular block. By exploring emotions below the "block," one can attain healing. Examples of feelings attached to these blocks: Deprived, Angry, Abandoned, etc.

I tried this with a particular person I knew at one time. My biggest challenge with this technique? I would have been up all night writing this letter. And I would have wasted an entire notebook of paper to boot!

In trying to figure what was not working out for me, I realized one's beliefs about oneself and others determine how long this letter will go on for. So rather than using this technique of letter-writing to feel better, go read something by Albert Ellis instead - and change your ideas that lead to these feelings. That way, you will not only feel better...but you will GET better. There is a big difference between those two.

Regardless of the validity of writing letters, there is one fantastic part that I love: this book will teach you the
exact technique behind energy healing.

Yes, the mysterious stuff "those spiritual people" have used to create miraculous healings. Whether these techniques work or not, I cannot say - I still need to start applying them myself. These are not ideas that you grasp in an hour, however. There are three separate exercises involved with energy: Recharging, Decharging, and Natural Energy Healing. Each one has separate instructions, and John encourages you to take baby steps
and learn these concepts gradually.

John Gray has the background for this, too. From my hazy understanding of him, before he got his Ph.D. in psychology and created the Mars-Venus craze, he was a monk for nine years. His story of how he healed his own blindness is described in the book as well.

A great book: liberating, practical, and useful. Most important, if you've always wanted to learn how to heal yourself and others via meditation, touch, and energy, you must read this book.

Not Worth the Time

I skimmed John Gray's "Practical Miracles for Mars & Venus," but couldn't stomach the hype. The first 150 pages are about the power of positive thinking and of belief in miracles. (Gray claims that the world has matured to the point that miracles are now available to anyone, at any time. Democracy and religious tolerance are two of the enabling changes.) Gray then sketches some simple techniques for physical and emotional healing: eat right; breath deeply; use a Chi Gong exercise to "recharge healing energy" and "decharge excess or negative energy" (or stress and negative thoughts); imagine that people have treated you better than they actually did; write yourself a letter expressing your frustrations; cultivate gratitude, confidence, joy, etc.; envision the world you want; believe in yourself and your power to heal. I gather that the techniques are more completely described in Gray's "How to Get What You Want and Want What You Have." "Practical Miracles" reads like an ad for Gray's seminars, or like a verbatim trancript of a stage presentation. (On page 239 he says "Now I have written twelve bestsellers and tend to be a speed writer. ... After many years of developing my thoughts, it takes me only a few months to write them down and create a book.") Positive thinking is all well and good, but the seminar must be more inspiring than the book.

I bought this book thinking it was for beginners but it's not. This is what I'd call an advanced flash cartooning book. I was frustrated with some of the examples in the book. I didn't like how the author did his walk cycle. The walk cycle was too complicated for me. I tried several times to read the book with an open mind but that didn't help. I also didn't like the fact that their animatic wasn't created using flash but with quicktime. I did enjoy their flash cartoon "Jicketts Speed Shop Episode 1". Go check out jicketts.com/pilot/index.html
The best flash cartooning book I've come across for beginners is "Flash 5 Cartooning" by Mark Clarkson. I'd recommend "Flash 5 Cartooning" instead of this book.

I don't get why other guys gave 5 stars to this it's not giving enough information. The chapter go like this:

chapter 1 : Is only talking about the author and what he thinks of the book

chapter 2 :It talks about Very Very Very basic stuff of animation

I don't want to bother myself by writing more about this book
it's just a waste of time unless you don't know what is flash!
It's 32.99$ l wouldn't buy it even for 5.00$ I recommend to everyone to buy "Animating Flash characters" it's cheaper and better.
The guys who rated this item with 5 stars are surely the author or his frieds, or maybe they didn't even see what's on the book
Anyway l made the mistake of buying it and l am writing this so you won't do the same mistake as l did.

A few years ago I tried learning Flash animation by using tutorials on the Internet. I learned a little bit, but most of the tutorials weren't concise and they were confusing and usually I found myself aggravated with Flash deeming it was "too complicate to learn." I found this book for $5 and decided to give Flash another try. Gray made this book easily accessible for novices and advanced users alike with clear instructions. Each chapter begins with a few words on the techniques you will learn in that chapter and some tips. Then the rest of the chapter consists of hands-on exercises. Artwork and sample files are included on the CD-Rom if you do not have any original artwork. These exercises are very easy to follow. I completed the first four chapters and I made a short movie with music. That was only two days after reading the chapters. I read the help file about importing music. This topic isn't covered in the first four chapters but it is in later chapters. It does not take hours upon hours to learn Flash animation using this book. Knowing some basics of Flash beforehand will come in handy, though. I highly recommend this book if you want to learn to make Flash animations. You will not regret your purchase!!

*The CD-Rom also includes software. Macromedia Flash 5, Adobe Photoshop, Bias Peak VST, Bias Peak LE, Bias Deck, and Sonic Foundry's Sound Forge. Most of the programs are PC & Mac compatible.*

This is a pretty decent book. However, for the most part it had nothing new or original to offer that I hadn't already seen in other animation books. Nice artwork thought and it's definitely pretty to look at so I guess in a way it's useful in providing inspirational material. But you're not really going to gain anything new by reading it.

Do your research on line before going to any of the hotels suggested in this guide. Some of them are real dumps. Also, the guide does little to show you how to get around the country. I'm spoiled by Rick Steves guides that basically take you step by step on how to get out of the airport and to the sights, restaurants, hotels, etc. There are no prices and maps of Bangkok do not even show where the airport is at. It doesn't do what a guide is supposed to do, guide you. It gives a general overview of each city and gives a history lesson, but not much else. I have to wonder if the people who wrote the book actually went to Thailand or just read about it. Waste of money if you ask me. Something to read while on the toilet, otherwise I'm doing all me research on line.

Full of great and relevant information. Some prices have already gone up, despite how recently the book came out, but that's par for the course in Asia. It would have been nice if there were place names spelled out in Thai a bit more, so you could point them out to taxi drivers. They rarely spoke English and my pronunciation of the romanized Thai words wasn't up to snuff. It's also not as handy as a reference guide for looking up phone numbers or addresses to hotels, restaurants, etc. as say the Lonely Planet. It does provide a bit better context though and reads more comfortably. All in all, a good book. I bought it because it was so recent, but think I may go back to Lonely Planet for most future travel guides.

I bought this book and relied on it to plan my
vacation for 30 days in Thailand with my family.
This book is very, very inaccurate! The
information is so inaccurate that I think the
authors just made up things to fill up pages.
It was worthless when I was visiting cities in
Thailand because each time I found the
information incorrect and misleading. I cursed
this book many times when I was on vacation in
Thailand for being so useless and deceptive and
inaccurate. I really hate to give a book such
a terrible review and I usually would never
comment but because this book let me down so
much in Thailand I decided to tell other readers
to warn them to look elsewhere for "reliable"
information. Have a good trip to Thailand is my
wish to you but buy some other book than this one.
It is DANGEROUS to print untruths and misinformation
and wrong address and wrong prices and wrong
everything else. This book was dead wrong so many
times it made me vomit. The authors now have no
credibility with me and I will never buy another
Rough Guide to anywhere because of it. It's
expecially dangerous when you are traveling with a
young child as I was and relied on the book and it
let me down again and again putting my family in
a bad way really fast. It's not fun when this happens
especially in a foreign country with your kid.

Fed up with the traditional Lonely Planet I turned to the Rough Guide for an alternative view. While this guide gives detailed historical/background knowledge it severely lacks in the essentials, notably transport prices and detailed maps.@There were just too many times when this book became a more of a frustration than a help. This book is best read before you go and left at home.

I just returned from Thailand and I took four guides: Thomas Cook's, Lonely Planet, Let's Go, and this guide (see my reviews on the others guides, and do seriously consider Lonely Planet Islands & Beaches IF you are only going to spend time as a sun lizard).

`Thomas Cook Thailand' is a special niche guide, best suited for those with tour groups and `Let's Go Thailand' is the guide for those backpackers that are `on the cheap'. This leaves Rough Guide to face off with Lonely Planet and in some areas it is superior to L.P and in one big area it is not.

Rough Guide's restaurant recommendations are by far the best of any guide I reviewed; they are both reliable and informative, giving great descriptions and dish recommendations, "the grilled river prawns with chili, the matsaman curry and the delicious durian cheese-cake." The restaurant prices are listed as: Expensive, Moderate and Inexpensive.

The hotel accommodations recommendations are also descriptive, very reliable and most have either webpage addresses or email. Sadly, Rough Guide still uses the user 'unfriendly' price codes, instead of just saying in dollars (or Bahts) what the cost for the hotel is. Thus you need to memorize the table where the number 4=400-600B and 5=600-900B etc., then you can convert to either dollars or euros to get the price. Also, since the Guide is published in 2004 (thus the information is from 2003) you add 10-20% for inflation. Both Lonely Planet and Let's Go just tell you what the price is. "Duh".

The Guide has excellent information that tells you the nitty-gritty that prepairs you for your trip. It also has great history, religion (Buddhism of course), environmental and cultural sections. Not to be missed is the additional reading recommendations (six pages).

Where it bombs is BANGKOK. The Guide says that Bangkok is "sprawling, chaotic and exhausting" and that is exactly how I experienced the 115 pages that covered this mega-city. The layout is dysfunctional. It has no logical consistency between any two points. Bangkok is the home of 11 million people; it is huge and spreads out like greater Los Angeles. It needs to be broken down into regions and then sections and those need to be logically kept together. But, this guide will give you information on one area, like Thanon Sukhumvit, then 60 pages later the accommodations for that area, then 20 pages back will be the Thanon Sukhumvit map; but wait, the restaurants for that area... you guessed it, will be located some where else. Hello! Who laid this out? What herb, pray tell, were they using? So, if you plan to spend any significant time in Bangkok, then Lonely Planet is a better guide.

Maybe the 6th edition Rough Guide will improve the Bangkok section and hopefully increased the guides paltry index (8 pages for all of Thailand - Bangkok alone could be 8 pages) and make this an outstanding guide. Bangkok aside this is still a strongly recommended guide.

For the majority of the book, the glossy pages are filled with pictures of nearly every cover of our favorite girls' series books. I bought this book because I wanted to see pictures of all the Dana Girls books. I can't believe that is the only series that isn't pictured fully! Only one book cover in each format of the Dana Girls is pictured. All the other series have every book pictured. That was very disappointing. It was fun to see new books added for this update of the author's previous book: Cherry Ames, Connie Blair, and Vicki Barr, but a letdown that the Dana Girls books were overlooked. When I first bought this book, I was already collecting most of the series mentioned (There is a of them on the front of the book). The first series mentioned was Ruth Fielding. Four formats were listed, of the five formats that exist. This was the first warning. All through the book, John Axe combined formats, or did not list them at all. Although it gives some nice eronious information (i.e. information about the stratmeyer synicate), most of the contents can be found after a two mininte search on Google. At one point, I emailed John Axe with a few Beverly Gray formats that he did not include in the guide. In his reply, he called them "anomalties", and compared them with some misprints that he owned. As of yet, I have not found a good guide, except ones for individual series. ...

I agree with the previous reviewer who mentioned the text was very disorganized. Much of the information provided is very redundant, hence the book could have been much shorter (and less expensive).

Synopsis: National cultures and laws affect accounting standards used by different countries. The book discusses the major differences of accounting in great detail. There is a push by the International Accounting Standards Board to harmonize accounting standards so that international financial statements will be more comparable. Will they succeed? This text suffers from its haphazard organization and lack of clarity in presentation. Textual material could be simplified if presented in tabular form. Text also suffers from lack of precision in references to accompanying tables. Material and citations tend to be a hodgepodge of older and, in some cases, obsolete studies done by other academicians.

John Stark Bellamy II, Death Ride at Euclid Beach and More True Tales of Cleveland Woe (Gray and Company, 2004)

Bellamy puts forth his fifth (and, if his preface is to be believed, final) book of the darker side of Cleveland history, Death Ride at Euclid Beach. If you've read any of the others, you know how this works-- stories ranging from two to roughly twenty pages about some sort of nasty, mysterious, sordid, or otherwise interesting bit of Northeast Ohio's past.

While I'm pretty much the target audience for this sort of thing, I have to say I'm glad Bellamy's hanging it up; I'm not sure whether it's his writing style or the innately boring nature of North Coast life, but Bellamy's reflections in the preface ring quite true; any more and he'd simply be treading water. Face it, Clevelanders; we're just not all that interesting. But what Bellamy's managed to dredge up over the years has been illuminating. ***
