This lady has spent years researching ancient techniques and it is to her credit that granulation and woven chain has finally come to America.

These chains are not soldered; they are fused and woven. I recommend you have at least a semester of college level jewelry or several years of soldering under your belt before jumping in with this one. But it worthwhile if you want to make chains that are worthy of royalty, or have a chain for a piece of art jewelry that will do it justice.

This is a workbook, progressing from the simplest and easiest to progressively more complex chains. After the first couple hundred fused links you become pretty adept. After fusing the links, you will learn to weave links into patterns. These are not your ordinary chains. They are strong, beautiful and flexible.

Jean is obsessively precise in her work, so this book is very precise. She goes over what gauges work for which patterns, as well as all the little tips that make a chain look superb. It's a lovely book, very well-written and one to be included in a goldsmith's library.

Prepare to be amazed at all the lovelies and realize that pictures do not do her work justice, as good as the pictures are. Many of the chains are made with 30 ga. wire, which is not much thicker than sewing thread. Her chains feel like silk.

If you're serious about making fine quality chains, then you need this book. Jean Stark is the guru.

This is great information with very east to read instructions. Not for the lazy or faint of heart.Great ancient traditions brought back to life.

Classical Loop-in-Loop Chains & Their Derivatives is the full title which I find still does not adequately describe the book.

This book is an instruction manual rather than a reference source. The instructions presented have been tried and tested on a number of students, and incorporates feedback from the students. The black and white photographs shown are of the chain work produced by the students as well as the author.

Loop-in-loop is the description of how chains are constructed with each chain link looping within each other to form a chain. Examples of this type of chain are on the front cover of the book.

The classical chains covered in this book are described as single loop-in-loop, side-weave single, single though-bead, basic pinched loop, roman pinched loop, pinched loop with wrapped beads, pinched loop through-beads, basic double loop-in-loop, double with wrapped beads, weave-off double, two-way double loop-in-loop, three-way double loop-in-loop, four-way double loop-in-loop, multiple soldered single, multiple soldered pinched loop, pinched loop with spacers, multiple woven single mesh, multiple woven double. In all 34 chains are described, 16 derivatives of the 18 definitely attributed ancient style of chains.

The main emphasis of this instruction work is on using fine silver and fusing to form whole links incorporating annealing, and then shaping into the links, and then forming the chain. Detailed step-by-step instructions are given on forming links up front, and then each chain has instructions on how to shape the required link, and then form into the chain. This book clearly explains and demonstrates these techniques and processes.

Each chain has a list of the materials needed (in inches and gauges (thickness) - appendices contain conversions) to make it at a given length. These can be used as references for links/inch or used to adjust as necessary to form a necklace or bracelet of given length. An appendix is supplied which gives recommended dowel diameters for the wire gauges for making variations to basic chains. The authors viewpoint is that making chains is an art form, and this book is to develop the students abilities and to encourage their own subsequent development and personal refinement of explained techniques.

Although primarily based on fine silver work (sterling is unsuitable for these techniques - if you solder links that is a different technique), the book does cover how to produce fused chains in 22K gold (including 22k gold metal alloy composition that was used in antiquity and for which these techniques work best).

There is a 25 page chapter on clasps and terminations, cross referenced with what chains they are suitable for, and the chains are cross referenced with what clasps and terminations are suitable.

This book does not have colour photographs. It has diagrams (at enlarged sizes for easier viewing) showing how to form the chain links and join with the next link and or terminate. Black and white photographs show finished chains and/or portions of finished chains. There are no photographs of ancient chains, and very little information on any apart from the detailed instructions on how to make them. Occasionally there are snippets about the existence of such an ancient chain, and even where it is located.

If you do not currently possess silverworking/chainworking tools you will need to purchase them to make the chains in this book, as well as needing work bench space. There are details in the book about what tools you will need, and for the USA where to obtain them. This book does not go over any of the safety aspects of using blowtorches or kilns. Please make sure you have on instruction on these before proceeding.

With the price of silver (and gold) the making of the chains will not be inexpensive, but if you wish to learn how to make a number of chains, this book will explain how.

This is a well organised, well presented instructional book. I would suggest to re-read the two pages covering "Weaving" and "Achieving best results" with "common problems and how to avoid them" before commencing each chain.

i find this book to be a great help when i am desiging necklaces, bracelets and even drop earrings. this is something every jeweler needs in their library.

Thomas Paine is the Main Man who started the two Revolutionary Wars, first America which took 7 years then afterwards France starts her own Revolution with Thomas Paine's help but hers is won almost overnight. Thomas Paine not only started these Revolutions but he participated in both. This book is a real page turner that you won't be able to put down!

With all of the current claims by people of what the Founding Fathers intended for our country I decided to begin reading them for myself to achieve a personal perspective on what the Founders intended. This book and the writings contained are an excellent source of information and insight as to what Thomas Paine's intentions were.

Thomas Paine is an important figure in the founding of the United States. Although he was later ignored by the United States (when he was a prisoner in France...).

The book is a good compilation of the works of Thomas Paine. Paine was a smart man and his writings were influential in the American Revolution (Common Sense) and the French Revolution (Rights of Man). This book combines the writings into one book.

Common Sense is a short phamplet that greatly influenced the United States foundation. The sensical arguments seem obvious to readers in the 21st Century but in the late 18th century they were ideas that people needed to hear, and was a kickoff to the drive for independence. Common sense was read by a lot of Americans at the time and would do students of American History well to get the feelings of the Revolutionary period.

In today's politically heated atmosphere, people seem to have forgotten what this great nation was founded on. Reading this book is enlightening, awakening, and reminds us of what it took to make America. Sadly, it's also a pretty sharp reminder of how more and more of our rights are being stripped away from us. I think this book should be required reading in school, and certainly before any political discussion. I recommend this book to ANYONE of ANY AGE. Absolutely amazing.

I have read much on the history of our beautiful country and also of other countries as well.

This book by Thomas Paine "COMMON SENSE AND THE RIGHTS OF MAN" is an extraordinary out line of how man should form his government and live in harmony with his fellow man in this world. Thomas Paine, one of our founding fathers, is a man that saw the rights of man being trampled on by England. His writing is plain common sense, of which many of us fail to utilize, about what a government should be and should not be. Our founding fathers gave us a Republic, if we could keep it. So far we have taken the declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights completly our of context. We are nowhere near the government our founding fathers gave us.

Those who wish to find the truth are compelled to read this book. Those who are satisified with the status quo will continue to be so. Read one of the best books ever written on the Rights of Man and then make your decision whether you want to live free men or langour in slavery.

Human All Too Human and Daybreak can be considered as volumes one and two of the same work. As Nietzsche said in Ecce Homo, a careful reading predicates a full understanding of his later polemics. Here, the bombast is not yet as evident but the seismic rumblings of the will to power, the eternal return, the death of god, the over and last-men all are all foreshadowed in Nietzsche's grand, classical deftness and precision of thought. Nietzsche's largest printed work, HAtH has perhaps the broadest and best sustained discussions of nearly every topic of importance to thoughtful and reflective thinkers. This, together with Dawn is a great place to begin reading Nietzsche.

In response to some of the prattlings below-only those who do not know the first thing about Nietzsche think that he was at all anti-Semitic. He wrote clearly, very clearly, against that and against nationalism. In one of his books he stated that Germany should not admit any more Jews inside of her borders. Why? Because he felt that the German people lacked an identity, and knew that Jewish people had a very strong identity. He did not think that Germany, weak and unrealized as it was, could stand an influx of a people that he repeatedly characterized as remarkable.

I am somewhat obsessed with Nietzsche, and this book started it all. Do not dive into his later, more well known masterpieces (Beyond Good and Evil, the Genealogy of Morals, The Gay Science) without acquainting yourself with this book. It is an introduction to his style, and there is no better example of his mastery of psychological observations. In this book he comments on all elements of social reality ("no one thinks to thank the clever man for restraining his wit when in the company of those who cannot practice wit" for example), going into love, friendship, the tenor of social gatherings, absolutely everything that is psychologically investigatable. He brings this method to his later books, in which he tackles larger issues, like the history of religion, philosophy, morality, and other things. But it all starts here-his later critiques of Christianity and everything else are far more understandable after a thorough acquaintance with his psychological method, first and best presented here. If you are at all sensitive and introspective, this book will move you to tears more than a few times.

If you like aphorisms and philosophy, this book will become one of your bibles. If nothing else, it's just plain fun to read for his incredible wit. Of course you have to put his ideas in the context of the period in which he wrote and understand that he has his own odd prejudices, but the brilliance of his understanding of the human condition really shines through. The biggest mistake any reader could make is to think Nietzsche was an anti-semite---far from it. He was anti-neanderthal. In this book especially the reader sees his low tolerance for received wisdom. This book is nothing less than part of the origin of Western psychology as practiced today. It also represents the demolition of science and philosophy polluted by the received Western theological framework. Some of the best parts are when he skewers religion. You have to love his style even if you do not agree with his pessimistic disgust for piety. This is the kind of philosophy book you need not fret over, unless you harbor wishful thinking about a supremely benevolent deity. Instead of making an elaborate argument about the number of angels that can dance on the head of a pin, as preceeding systematic philosophers did literally and figuratively, Nietzsche bends the pin and throws it in the trash. I wish I had read this before his Genealogy of Morals, as knowing his thoughts here would have made that book far more interetsing and understandable. I highly recommend philosophy students first approaching Nietzsche pick up Human, All Too Human to start their study. And if you are religious and want to bolster your faith, well, you should stay far away from this book.

O.k. So I have a minor in philosophy and Nietzsche was one of my inspirations to pursue this as a degree in college. Nietzsche deals with androgony. In more modern terms, men and women are crossing over the line of androgeny with their jock image. They are getting more and more androgynous you can't distunguish between even basic differences between the sexes anymore. While my philosophy professor and classmates dismissed Nietzsche as "not being a first rate philosopher," he does have his points about god and androgeny. This is part of our changing world and in philosophy class I did make my points.

if you want to have your moral foundations knocked out from under you, read this book - and then build upon the ruins - Nietzsche's, in my opinion, most accessible work, as his aphoristic style floats over many different topics - don't stop here however, i recommend Kauffman's "Nietzsche, Philosopher, Psychologist, AntiChrist" as a starter if you find the complexity and diversity of Nietzsche's thought to be overwhelming or incomprehensible - he's frequently ambiguous and contradictory but it's more a positive trademark of his works and shouldn't dissuade one from further readings.

This book is just great. It combines every metaphysical, positive thinking principle that has been written in hundreds of books- into one small, READABLE, AFFORDABLE (!) treasure.The author "gets it" and - after reading this book- we get it too. A great gift! No preaching here, just a wonderful communication of positive ideas laid out beautifully.

This is a wonderful little handbook for life, written in a conversational style. Don't be deceived by its straightforward, down-to-earth tone. Throughout the book are centuries of wisdom, presented as quotations from philosophers, scholars, poets and other wise thinkers. These are interspersed with real-life experiences of people who have lived by these wise aphorisms.

In addition to presenting experiences of specific people, the author gives examples from her own life: not only how she created luck for herself, but also how she had inadvertently blocked it. Such a personal approach gives you the feeling that you and she are having a heart-to-heart conversation at the kitchen table.

This is a book to be read more than once. Each time you read it, you are apt to be at a different place in your life, which will draw your attention to new insights.

Being included in this book is in itself an example of one of the ways I've created luck in my life. When my problem occurred, and I made lemonade from the lemons, I posted the story to an email discussion group. Azriela saved that post and asked for my permission to include it in her book. If I hadn't taken the time to share my story, I wouldn't have been "lucky" enough to have my story shared with the world through this book. Just making yourself available can make you lucky!

I've always been a big believer in creating your own luck, and I had employed some of the strategies here intuitively. The good advice in this book showed me how to consciously and consistently use luck-creating strategies to create success after success. If you read this book and put its ideas to work for you, you will begin attracting good fortune in all areas of your life.

This is an excellent book filled with practical advice on increasing your good luck. My only complaint (a very small one) is that the book is probably more targeted to a female audience with several references to finding a husband or handling children. As a man, I found most of the exercises too introspective for my taste. Primitive that I am, I don't like to recollect big mistakes that I have made or probe deeply into my own psyche. I guess I'm just not wired that way. These small issues aside. I thought the book was fun to read and worthwhile. I probably enjoyed Dr. Wiseman's "The Luck Factor," a little more.

a short review: I recieved this book by complete chance and coincidence... I've only had it for ten days now. At first I was merely skeptical. I said to myself "oh great, another somebody trying to explain the principles pf the universe."

But that wasn't the case... This book is about gentelness. It does not preach you to do anything or that you're doing anything wrong..... It merely reminds you, in the most gentle of ways, that you either ALLOW good-Luck to flow into your life, or you don't... I was a little bit STUNNED because this book is SO FULL OF TRUTHS that it made me see how many LUCK-BUSTERS and LUCK BLOCKERS I have had in my life... and guess who has created them?--Moi!!...... This is not an easy thing to recognize. It makes you upset and angry with yourself for a while (because deep down in your heart you know this is TRUTH!), but once you LET GO of this anger, you begin to ALLOW good things to be entering your life...... and INDEED, in the past WEEK (since I started reading this book) I've experienced more love and happiness than I have for a LONG LONG TIME :-)

This is not because of the book. This is not some MAGICAL BOOK. This book, however, does what only the BEST BOOKS CAN DO... It reminds you of Universal truths that YOU ALREADY KNOW... It does so in a FUN and GENTLE way.... This book was clearly written in the SPIRIT OF LOVE.... It gets my HIGHEST RECCOMENDATION. Anyone, like me, who is on a spiritual path, anyone who is with an OPEN MIND(Principle # 1 of LUCK-CREATION according to the book)... Anyone who likes to be reminded of gentle yet POWERFUL universal truths should read this book!

I've read 50 or more books on MLM and this is the definitive text. Dr. Barrett captures the MLM business as it "feels" to those of us who are involved in it. Self-motivation is often a lonely and depressing venture. Dr. Barrett understands this and speaks to it with more insight than anything else I've ever read.

On a personal note, I was privileged to meet and speak with Dr. Barrett. I found him to be knowledgeable, humble and truly interested in helping others to learn and grow.

This is the book I recommend to my own MLM team as well as the one I go to for inspiration and answers. If I could give it 10 stars, I would.

If you have forgotten where you came from or need direction where to go in your busy life with marketing, this is the book that will shed light into exploding your career into new heights.

You get a realistic look at the business and what it takes to make it.
The author points out what it takes: consistency, duplication and enough time. Discover the four ingredients for success and the three fuels to get you there. He says you need vision, courage and stamina to make it in this business and I couldn't agree more. This book has helped me to stay positive and stay with it as I built my team from 10 to 590 in under 10 months! It's a must-have! I loved this book. Mindy McCortney

This is terrific book. And, although it's written for Network Marketers in particular (and can truly help both the beginning and veteran Network Marketers to reach significantly higher levels of success within their companies), the wisdom contained in Dr. Barrett's teachings are applicable to any person in any field; assuming the goal of that person is to become a top producer and/or top leader.

While I found myself learning and re-learning ideas throughout the book that held significant value (highlighter and pen were used often and lots of pages are dog-eared - the sure sign of a book I found to be very valuable), there were certain chapters that were of such help, I had to realllllly slow down and be sure to absorb them.

While I won't spoil it here by trying to summarize in just a few sentences what he taught in an entire chapter, I will say that his concept of the "jelly in the donut" brought an entirely new understanding of "belief systems" and how they either help us or hurt us . . . usually, without our even knowing. He then expertly explained how to get the bad jelly out and the new, life-enhancing jelly in. If his explanation and teaching of just this one concept was all you read, it would still be worth many, many times the price of this book.

However . . . don't stop there. There is so much more to read and learn, as well. I tried to read just a bit at a time but couldn't do it; the more I read, the more I wanted to read and the more I looked forward to knowing.

What a great teacher. Thank you, Dr. Barrett. I'll be recommending this book a lot, both to Network Marketers and non-Network Marketers; I guess, then, I'll be recommending it to everyone.

It is refreshing to read a MLM book that actually tells it like it is. Dr Barrett explains in simple detail what steps you must take to win the Network Marketing game. It all starts with your decision. This is a book you will want to keep on your shelf and refer to many times.

This book is the journal of Rosemary Langheldt who left her job and home in San Francisco to serve with the Red Cross in London and then Germany. The story is told through letters home and journal entries, and both are highly informative and well written missives. Mrs. Norwalk recreates what it was like to live in England during the last year of the war. She is an empathetic observer of the many tens of thousands of men (boys) who stop briefly at her Clubmobile for a donut and a cup of coffee after disembarking in England and re-embarking for the fight on the Continent. Once Rosemary is transferred to Germany, she sees firsthand the near destruction of many German cities. Her writings are true to the time: these people were our enemies a short time ago and they tried to kill the boys who I helped serve. It also offers an honest appraisal of the Occupation where the black market made many Americans rich. This book will be of interest to anyone who wants to know about life in England after the Allied landings in June 1944 and the early days of the occupation in Germany.

Rosemary Norwalk left ardent swains and professional position to become a "doughnut dolly" with the American Red Cross. This University of California graduate and San Francisco native brings a disciplined eye to the social climate and
the broad spectrum of Americans thrown together by World War II. Following training in Washington, D.C. where she had to be restrained from sitting in the back of the bus, to commentary on the bravery of the ordinary Londoner under the buzz bombs, to experiences managing the large operation at a major port, she is insightful and forthright. Her many letters home are tied together with good historical notes on military operations and progress of the war. Mistitled a love story, it is instead a story of women who dared to step up and take on great responsibility for providing troop support both departing and returning through Britain. An example: A new"girl" arrives and one of the current Red Cross "girls" rushes to Rosemary with misgivings over her attitude and different looks. " The new girl announces: I'm Lil...I'm a Jew and I'm from Brooklyn and I don't like to take orders.' It was a challenge, not a greeting. I took a deep breath in the silence, then stuck out my hand and smiled. I hoped cordially. 'Welcome, Lil. I'm a gentile, I'm from San Francisco, and,' I groped for the right words, 'I don't like to give orders, so we ought to get along fine.' "

This is a wonderful book that I enjoyed the entire time I was reading it. It is one of those treasures of American history that should be read by anyone interested in WWII history. It is valuable look at the war from the perspective of an American Red Cross volunteer stationed in England. Not a nurse, as the author points out as the usual assumption, but one of those moral boosting "doughnut dollies" that sometimes were the last friendly female face a soldier would see before embarking for the battlefields of Europe.
Mrs. Norwalk was a wonderfully skilled writer at the time she wrote the letters and journal entries that make up the book. And the book is equally well crafted and edited, giving a detailed look at the work of the Red Cross workers on the docks of Southampton, England, their everyday lives and yes romances as the subtitle implies. It also includes personal photographs taken at the time.
An interesting item on page 99 is a list that explains the code used by the Red Cross to communicate the number of ships arriving or leaving, their sailing dates, and the number of soldiers to expect so they would be prepared and have enough volunteers, coffee, and doughnuts for them.
My sincerest thanks to Mrs. Norwalk (now deceased)for sharing this personal history with us, it reminds me very much of the letters my father wrote my mother during WWII that I have published into a book entitled: All My Love, Forever: Letters Home From A WWII Citizen Soldier. - Dale Lane

I picked up "Dearest Ones" in a discount store and didn't expect much. There's a certain sameness to the World War II diaries of young women: young woman from small town bucks convention, kisses parents good-bye, and runs off to get liberated. She has some very mild adventures, makes a lot of friends, says "gee golly whiz" a lot, and swans on home at the end of the book. A postscript informs us that she settled down with a man named Bob or Hank or Earl, of whom we heard absolutely nothing in the course of the book except for a few mentions of "letters from So-and-So in the South Pacific," and is living somewhere in the midwest near her three grown children.

Boy, was I surprised, and pleasantly so. Perhaps it helps that Rosemary Langheldt was older, in her mid-twenties, and already a career woman when she applied to join the Red Cross overseas. It also helps that she seems to have been a very curious and thoughtful person. As other reviews have mentioned, she takes notice not only of the glitz and fun of work abroad, but of Britain's sometimes stifling class distinctions, American racial prejudice, and the difficult moral compromises involved in the occupation of Germany. There is also plenty of romance, fun, and gee-golly-whiz adventure, but one never gets the sense that Rosemary lost track of her primary reasons for being in the Red Cross or saw her job as a mere means of adventure. Rather, she was there to work and the adventure happened along the way.

She was keenly interested in other people, making this book a pleasure to read-- it can be incredibly frustrating to read a diary when the only "character" the diarist is able to make three-dimensional is the diarist herself. She had a skill for interacting with people (I get the sense that I would never in a million years have been able to handle her job) and trying to understand them, and that curiosity and interest in humanity permeates the whole book. (I also feel compelled to mention, as a reader, that I really appreciated the narrative cohesiveness of this book. If someone is introduced, then they will be around until a reason for their departure is given. A lot of diaries suffer from people and events appearing, disappearing, reappearing, necessitating either a lot of head-scratching or awkward footnotes. This book doesn't have that problem. Rosemary was a really excellent correspondent.) This is really a stellar example of the genre, probably one of the best I've read.

I came across this book at a local bookstore and thought it was a very touching and well-written account of love during wartime. As the author lived in my area, I was able to meet her and have her sign my copy. I'm so glad I did as she passed away August 22, 2002. What a great keepsake for her family and a wonderful book for the rest of us. So if you've been meaning to write your memoirs, don't put it off! It may not ever be listed on Amazon but it would probably mean a lot to your loved ones.

Tricia Molloy has taken spiritual principles and presented them in a real-world context. It will inspire even the most pragmatic leaders to see their power and their possibilities for producing extraordinary results.

The book is easy to read and its lessons are easy to absorb, all of which makes it an excellent resource for those seeking to apply spiritual principles in a business setting. Even if you sense that you have "heard some of this before" the question you must ask is "but have I applied it in my life?" If the answer is no, then Tricia's book will certainly help you.

She has a gift for writing in an accessible style (what one reviewer termed "gentle" - an excellent description) and for taking principles that others have made into lofty, intellectually complex ideas and reducing them to practices that are easy to implement, even for over-worked corporate types.

One additional note is that individuals or leaders who work in larger corporations should not be concerned about the reference to "entrepreneurs" in her sub-title. This book is for anyone in the business world that is looking for ways to bring more spirit, more life, and even more sanctity and peace to their working world.

Buy this book, read a chapter a week, and resolve to take action on the inspired ideas it will generate. I have no doubt that it will change your life.

First off, this book is for everyone. I was amazed to see so many financial, emotional, and time management techniques packed into such an easy-to-read book. Tricia gives you exercises and ideas for increasing your productivity as well as the savings in your bank account. I was stunned at how quickly I read this book.

Tricia has done a vast amount of research to bring you the 10 principles of an abundant and successful life. Her chapters are chock full of quotes from different books and people that she has read and interviewed so you not only get her take on each topic, but you're in the discussion with at least five to eight other individuals on the same principle.

My favorite chapters were: Principle 4, Clean Out the Clutter: The Universe will Fill the Vacuum, and Principle 10: Give Thanks Often: Cultivating an Attitude of Gratitude. I focus on these two chapters because they are so pivotal to having a financially secure life. Most folks forget how all these topics effect your view and choices on money, and what Tricia does is demonstrate how changing your environment from clutter to clean brings you more energy and time (at least 2 hours a day says the research) to be productive with what is really important to you.

Giving thanks often is something that has brought me many new clients, opportunities and joys in life. So all the advice Tricia gives in Chapter 10 I heartily recommend to others because I've seen the positive results first hand with my own experiences. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to break out of their negative rut in a simple yet positive way. Sure, the titel says the principles are for entrepreneurs, but I have found that the truths talked about are just as viable for the stay-at-home-mom, teacher, construction worker, or medical professional. It really doesn't matter what you do for income. If you are working, this book is for you!

One of my closest friends heard Tricia Molloy speak last year and was so enchanted that she bought her book for me as a gift. What a delightful surprise this book has been!

I read about 2 books a week, many in the "how to make your life better" genre, and am often disappointed to hear the exact same information over and over, slightly rehashed. This book is a refreshing change. It is organized around 10 key principles, with a chapter devoted to fleshing out each one.

Several of the chapters are pretty unique and exceptionally helpful. My favorite was the chapter on "cleaning out the clutter" to rid yourself of many of life's annoyances and to make space for more good things to come in. This chapter has had a huge impact on me and I have been on a "clean it up and get it out" mentality thanks to Molloy's influence.

There is another excellent chapter on tapping into your own inner guidance with some very specific information on meditation and prayer to guide you as you learn to seek this inner guidance. There is an excellent section on forgiveness and opening up mental space in your life.

There are excellent chapters on using the law of attraction, visualizing, affirming your success, and expressing gratitude. The entire book is delightful to read and chock full of points that had me saying to myself, "I never thought of it that way, what a good point!"

Overall an enjoyable read and a book I intend to reread regularly.

If you are considering buying any guide for Check Point Firewall-1 NG buy this one first and forget the rest.

Don't let the author's "phoneboy" aka make you think twice. This is one of the best guides I have ever read. Most are dry boring and overly technical. This guide is a very easy read, it is well written and to the point and covers all aspects of Check Point Fire Wall thoroughly.

Welch-Abernathy has taken great care to present installation, configuration and troubleshooting in a manner anyone will understand, whether you are seasoned pro or just getting started. He has covered all OS models and taken many of the trobleshooting questions from his site FAQs at www.phoneboy.com and shown examples of how to understand and correct them. In addition to actual Q and A, he outlines the step by step sample configurations excellently with actual scripts, screenshots, notes and diagrams.

Welch-Abernathy also guides you through creating network structures on a scale that allows someone new to Check Point to design and impliment smallto medium network configurations in easy to manage ways.

The author starts out buy giving a great overview of firewall security technologies and there relation to OS Models while comparing the benifits and short comings of both.

Welch-Abernathy then guides you through the installation and developing your rule base. He includes tables and charts to show examples of each and backs up his examples with the most common Q&As making an installation seem like a breeze.

The authors explanation of remote access, NAT and high availability servers don't get any simpler. Any Admin who needs load balancing and fail over on a server cluster should keep this
guide around for refferance as well as daily use.

In addition to the main body of knowledge Welch-Abernathy also includes a great appendex covering OS Bastion security that is not only simple it is direct as well. Also included in the Appendices are a use policy template, ldap configuration, fine tuning for performance and two pages of concrete internet resources.

Alot of subjects in IT and security are covered over and over with a mass of books that may be a little better or a little worse, but are essentially identical. While Checkpoint is a less crowded topic than, say, NT Administration, I suspect this book will continue to stand out. In researching Checkpoint issues I've been struck by the extent to which "Phoneboy" is personally identified with the topic, both by newbies and by seasoned professionals. It's for good reason. This book is extremely thorough (within its scope) and brings alot to the table in the way of the details that a professional would need. I've read alot of technical texts, but this one stands out, both generally and with the specific topic. The book is written well, with a good structure and giving useful examples. I found the bug reports and known issues particularly useful. As a technical resource it seems unmatched. It was an excellent resource, both on the job and in earning my CCSA.

Each chapter of the book starts off with describing what the reader will learn or accomplish by reading that chapter. This sort of information is helpful for allowing readers to skip information that may not be useful to them and find the answers they seek. Many of the chapters also contain FAQ's and sample configurations and illustrations to help reinforce the information.

The book tries to cover a very broad scope and apply to a wide audience. It contains information all the way from holding the readers hand if they are new to Checkpoint Firewall-1 NG to providing detailed troubleshooting and configuration steps for experienced Checkpoint administrators.

I have never administered a Checkpoint firewall personally, but I found the information mostly straight forward and understandable. Again, this is not a book one would typically read casually, but for anyone who administers a Checkpoint firewall or is looking at installing a Checkpoint Firewall-1 NG system this is an excellent source of information.

Checkpoint FireWall-1 has become one of the top firewall software products in the industry. There are many reasons for its predominance. It was the first commercial
firewall on the market, but more importantly, the FireWall-1 GUI and its ease of use impressed corporate CIO's.

Although FireWall-1 is easy to use, some users face difficulty in configuring the product correctly and appropriately. In fact, one of the biggest dangers of a firewall is that it can
provide a false sense of security; if not properly configured, a firewall may have so many holes that it actually functions as nothing more than a router. Firewall expert Marcus
Ranum notes that, "...eventually, if enough data is going back and forth through your firewall, it is no longer a firewall -- it is a router."

Many times, firewall administrators are hired not because of their expertise in information security, but because they know network and systems administration quite
well. Many FireWall-1 administrators start with zero experience and knowledge. This is good from a job security and training perspective, but terrible from a security perspective.
Despite the proliferation and ubiquitous nature of FireWall-1 over the past decade, it is only in the last few months that any worthwhile books on FireWall-1 have become
available. One of the best is Essential Checkpoint Firewall-1: An Installation, Configuration, and Troubleshooting Guide by Dameon Welch-Abernathy. Welch-
Abernathy maintains a Web site, ..., which contains information on anything and everything related to FireWall-1. In fact, many FireWall-1 administrators have
... bookmarked as their prime site for FireWall-1 information, even before the Check Point support site.

Although the documentation that comes with FireWall-1 is quite good, Essential Checkpoint Firewall-1 often surpasses it. This is what makes Welch-Abernathy known as
the man for FireWall-1. Even Nir Zuk, who was a principal engineer at Check Point, stated that Welch-Abernathy's knowledge of FireWall-1 in many cases surpassed the
knowledge of Check Point's own engineers.

As its title implies, the book covers the installation, configuration, and troubleshooting of FireWall-1. Whereas the product itself is pretty straightforward to install (except for the
software license information), the real challenge is in the post- installation arena. The book has 14 chapters and, by Chapter 3 (page 34), the book is already into FireWall-
1. Other books often include up to 100 pages of filler on topics such as computer secrity, cryptography, threats, etc., and don't get to the main subject until half way through the
book. Chapter 4 of this book provides a thorough overview of how to build a rulebase. The chapter describes the various fields and objects that need to be created for the
firewall to be effective. Although the simplicity of the Check Point GUI is obvious, the definition of names, network objects, and so forth, must be carefully planned -- especially
for rollouts of FireWall-1 in large enterprise environments.

Chapter 8 provides an excellent overview of content security. FireWall-1 is built on its patented Stateful Inspection capabilities, but it has other security facilities including CVP
(Content Vectoring Protocol), UFP (URL Filtering Protocol), and others. The chapter describes much of the secondary content protection capabilities of FireWall-1. Such

capabilities are crucial in light of the volume of information that passes through corporate firewalls (including streaming media, email, files, Java, etc.).

Essential Checkpoint Firewall-1 covers all the crucial topics that any FireWall-1 administrator needs to know. From authentication, VPN, logging, high availability, and
more, it is all there. This is what makes Essential Checkpoint Firewall-1 the book of choice for FireWall-1.

This is one of those rare books that delivers what the title claims. It gives in-depth instructions on Firewall-1 installation, configuration and troubleshooting, and also includes additional material on security and networking that goes beyond what the title promises.

What I especially liked about this book are the little details that have a big impact if they're overlooked. Notable examples include:

(1) Quick, but thorough, introduction that provides an overview of firewalls at a general level, and the key features and benefits of Firewall-1 in particular.
(2) Issues, such the need for a security policy, are addressed early on. This is an important consideration and the author goes beyond merely highlighting the need by giving you a brief template to use in creating one.
(3) Guide through the labyrinth of Check Point's Firewall-1 licensing schemes - this is a nice touch because mastering the technology is a less daunting task then figuring out Check Point's sales strategy.
(4) Strengths and weaknesses of candidate operating systems, and a straightforward process for installing and configuring Firewall-1. The latter is a strong point because you'll benefit from the author's extensive experience and will save time by having a strategy instead of getting bit by obscure issues and learning painful lessons.

I like the way that each section ends with frequently asked questions. The author anticipates and answers common questions about installation, configuration and troubleshooting. Because of the way this book is structured it can serve as an off-the-shelf implementation and maintenance guide, eliminating the need to develop this material in-house.

This is one of the best written and well thought-out technical guides that I've had the pleasure of reading. It sets a high standard for similar books, but more importantly, it so completely covers Firewall-1 that you won't need anything but this book to implement and support this product.

Purusing these two books is a delightful experience. Anyone with an appreciation for fashion and clothing created in the 17th - 20th centuries will be amazed at the care and keeping the pieces in the Kyoto Museum's collection have received. The close-up photography reveals the marvel of the handwork and creation of each design, and each piece is a wonderful representation of its era. And the price of the set was unbelievable!! All around, a wonderful find and a keeper.

I own the one volume book in paperback.
In comparing the two books side by side they are nearly identical!
But the two volume set is missing 14 pages that appear in the copy that I own! Most of the images are just close-ups of the garments, one set is a period illustration from Diderot, but some are garments completely omitted. The 20th century fashion is all complete though.
So you have a toss up choice, larger photos or more photos. otherwise they are identical!

This set of books is absolutely stunning. I paid NZ$150 (around US$90)at a bookstore here in New Zealand and volume 1 alone is worth every penny of the sale price.
If you're interested in historical costume, you won't regret this purchase.

Due to the publisher not anticipating the demand for this set of books it took me just over a year to acquire my copy. It was more than worth the wait. The photography is stunning. If you have an interest in costuming
add this book to your collection without delay.

Your mailman will probably hate you for buying this but this is really one of the best resources to have and it's very inspirational! You get 2 hardcover volumes with great large photos for a really bargain price, I love it!

The Genie within is perhaps the easiest to comprehend (and read) book written on the subconscious mind. It is written in everyday language, without much the airy fairy examples of other books on the same topic.
Further, the author does not spend 5 chapters writing about something that can be explained in 1 chapter, or even (sometimes) 1 page, and that alone makes this book stand out from others on this subject.

The Author acknowledges that the information isn't new, and that he has basically put together what he knows in a format that makes it easy to understand.

If you have never read anything on the subconscious, this (in my opinion) is the best book to start with. It will create many 'ah-ha, so that's what I've been doing wrong' moments.

That said, it does lack information in two distinct areas of the subconscious. The first one is in relation to symbols - the subconscious makes great use of symbols - anything you have an attachment to becomes a symbol, and symbols can go yet further (into the realm of fantasy) as they can do in dreams. Secondly, while he explains how the subconscious can't tell the difference between fantasy and reality (and how it can be used to set goals and program the mind), he doesn't explain that this crucial ability of the subconscious mind can be used to create new memories, which allows a person to gain more confidence in an area they aren't good at (because your subconscious mind uses past memories as a blueprint for how you react to future events, if you program new successful memories, your subconscious can use them as a guide, instead of previous encounters where you're had difficulty)

Overall, I've still given this book 5 stars because it is so easy to understand, and gives so much good information. My 'criticism' comes from reading multiple books (so far 7) on the subject, none of which contained a complete picture of the subconscious.

My 13-year old son has spent the last school year putting into action the suggestions and insight he has gained from this book, and has made such progress (in scholastics, sports, and social arenas) that I have to attribute much of this to the lessons contained in this fantastic book. I also have been awakened and am improving in multiple facets in my life.

I have added about 40 or so similar books to our home library, including all the usual suspects (Napoleon Hill, Troward, Wattles, Vernon Howard, Christian Larson, etc.), but this is such a concise and actionable book that really summarizes the practical applications of the wonderful power in our possession - a power we all have but that we have to be reminded about and not neglect it.

I highly recommended to read this book with an open mind, and you cannot help but be a better person. There is an inexpensive CD that accompanies the book, available at the auther's website that is highly recommended, too. Good Luck, and enjoy reading and learning!

This is a great book. Not too long. Easy to read. Reaffirms what I have always heard about the power of our subconcious mind. It's a shame that we waste all this power and ability.

If you are struggling to achieve the success that you want, then you need to do three simple and easy things: 1) Buy this book, 2) Read and learn the concepts contained in this book, 3) Apply what you have learned in this book.

The author boils it all down to an easy to learn science on how you can utilize your subconscious mind to achieve anything that you desire. This is key since I've read several books on the subconscious mind. After reading this book, I know now why I didn't succeed using other author's suggestions. This book is almost more like a fun to read manual of how to program your subconscious mind for all the success you want!

My advice to you is to IGNORE all other books on this subject until after you've read this book and applied the techniques. I have and am seeing very successful results after the first day.
