Una relato lindísimo sobre la historia de Mexico, el amor y la vida en general. No dejen de leerlo...Me ha costado conseguir un libro que lo supere.

Este es uno de los mejores libros que Carlos Fuentes ha escrito. Digo que es uno de los mejores pero no el mejor que a esrito. Si te gusta la historia entonces te va guster mucho. Si tienes interes en la historia de Mexico te va gustar mas porque es una novela inolvidable que puedes ver por los ojos de Laura Diaz, una mujer fuerte y sensilla que tiene que luchar para los derechos que hoy en dia apenas las mujeres estan disfrutando. Es una bonita novela que se trata de los cambios que han occurido en Mexico durante el siglo XX. Es muy emocional la historia, especialmente si conoces familia que a vivido los cambios durante los ultimos cien anos. Yo pase el tiempo leyendo este libro y pensando en mi abuelita que hace unos anos fallecio a los 99 anos. Como Laura Diaz estuvo presente para ver los cambios entre el gobierno y los atitudes de la cultura sobre los derechos de los humanos sin pensar si es mujer o hombre. Laura Diaz vive una vida completa con gran amores, familia y todo el tiempo al lado de los famosos y un testigo de la historia de Mexico. Te recomendo este libro para entender la historia de Mexico y como la mujer es parte de esa historia.

La historia de Laura Diaz puede llegar a ser tomada como idealista, pero encierra los deseos de todo ser humano y muy intereantemente nos lleva de la mano de la historia de Mèxico del siglo XX.
Yo soy de Guatemala, pero ambos paises tiene una cultura paralela en el tiempo y con muchos puntos en comun, por algo fueron conquistados al mismo tiempo y por casi las mismas personas.
Tanto en lo social como en lo polìtico este libro pudiera llegara a ser tambien la historia de ambos paises, ambos con revoluciones, represiòn y corrupciònm que hacen que uno se sienta identificado con el tema.
En resumen una lectura fascinante.

Los años con Laura Díaz es como la novela gemela de La región más transparente, porque con ambas obras se puede aprender, analizar y entender la historia de México, sobre todo la del siglo XX; Fuentes demuestra en esta novela su calidad como narrador, su conocimiento del español que fluye en la creación de los personajes y su ambiente. El viaje entre Veracruz y la Ciudad de México que emprende Laura Díaz es un tejido que señala los entresijos de la historia del México contemporáneo. En fin, el lector queda enamorado de Laura, una especie de Beatriz que nos guía por los espacios cósmicos de México.

The 5 stars I give this work is not because I am in love with Fuente's overall work, but because this historical fiction provokes thought and analysis in a poetic way of the life as seen through the eyes and feelings of a woman.
If the reader wishes to to learn the history of a country while becoming enveloped in how a woman, a wife, a daughter, a lover and friend is impacted by the choices made, this is a book to read.

El magnifico Mexicano autor Carlos Fuentes nos ofrece sus opiniones sobre el Presidente Bush y como afecta Los Estados Unidos y el mundo en general. Mas bien el libro es como una seria de reflexiones como un diario sobre importante datos entre los anos Agosto de 2000 y Junio 2004. Es muy interestante,leer sus opiniones anos despues de varios asuntos que han pasado y ya podendo entender el afecto sobre el politico y economias del mundo. En realidad son opiniones y por eso no pueden ser corecto ni falso, son eso y nada mas, opiniones pero por refexiones de un intelectual internacional con capaz de hacer te pensar sobre sus ideas. Yo no estaba de acuerdo con todo lo que dice el senor Fuentes pero como tengo mucho respecto por Carlos Fuentes queria entender sus opiniones. Tambien tengo respecto para el Presidente Bush y el asunto en que nos encontramos . Aungue las ideas son generalmente como el titulo del libre, contra Bush, puedes leer este libro con una mente abrierto y ser mejor por el. Las ideas sobre el petropoder y la guerra tienen una linea transversal que es deficil disputar pero tambien hay otras razones que no estan explorado. Fuentes no dice nada nuevo pero siempre tiene un modo de presentar sus ideas con color y pensamiento. Las nociones de Fuentes son contra mis ideas pero sin embargo los entiendo y algunos hasta tienen merito. Te recomendo este libro y despues de leer usted puedes tener tu propia opinion sobre sus analysis.

Este libro es muy importante y tiene que ser leído por todos los latinos que viven en los Estados Unidos. Ahora bajo la administración de Bush todo ha sido hecho un caos de nuestra economía y de las pólizas internacionales con otros países, empezando con la guerra y las armas de "terrorismo". Fuentes es muy atrevido en escribir un libro con un tema llamado Contra Bush pero se supone que en este país uno tiene libertad de decir lo que uno quiera. Pero no me sorprendería si eso cambia también porque ahora hasta están cambiando la constitución bajo esta administración. Lo que es frustrante es que libros come este y películas como del Sr. Moore no hicieron ninguna diferencia en la ultima elección en Noviembre. La administración de Bush esta ganando el voto Latino, y una de las medias es por la televisión porque ahora esta metiendo políticos en canales Norte Americanos como Univision y Telemundo.

He recibido comentarios de personas americanas de que como alguien que no nacio ni vive en los Estados Unidos puede escribir un libro criticando al gobierno de Washington D.C.

Primero, me parece excelente que un intelectual mexicano haga una sintesis tan completa de ideas que le han surgido a lo largo del gobierno de W. Bush. El compendio de pensamientos del autor a lo largo de este desastroso gobierno americano sintetiza la frustracion de todos los que hemos tenido el tiempo de pensar cada paso que ha dado la administracion actual.

Segundo, los americanos tienden a meter sus narices en cada rincon de nuestros paises e incluso a hablar con supuesta propiedad y conocimiento de todos los temas e.g. el alegado alcoholismo de Lula puesto al "descubierto" por un periodista yanqui. Da gusto leer un libro tan critico al gobierno americano escrito con tanto conocimiento del tema y entendimiento del entorno completo.

Tercero, no se necesita ser adivino ni pensador de tiempo completo para darse cuenta de los atropellos al orden mundial que se hacen todos los dias por el gobierno de W. Bush. Fuentes hace alusion de los mejores momentos de esta administracion en el ambito de destruir tratados, acuerdos y relaciones internacionales para el unico objetivo de permanecer y enriquecerse.

Este libro no dice nada nuevo, los que hemos seguido el curso de la administracion Bush y sobretodo hemos dedicado el tiempo a pensar y reflexionar cada movimiento de su gobierno nos hemos dado cuentas de lo que se incluye y mas; pero es muy valioso el trabajo de Fuentes al atreverse a escribir lo que escribe y sobretodo al opinar tan abiertamente del desastre ideologico, politico e intelectual de W. Bush y su grupo nefasto en el poder.

Hoy dia para W. Bush es prioridad su bolsillo y el fundamentalismo neoconservador en el que vive Washington D.C. El mundo entero le grita en su cara otro tipo de prioridades: libertad, democracia, justicia, salud, alimentacion, investigaciones, entre muchisimas mas.

Estoy de acuerdo que este libro realmente no tiene nada "nuevo" a decir sobre la presidencia de George W. Bush. Sin embargo, es una obra mas filosofica que pone el presidente en el contexto del mundo y de la historia (hay muchos libros contraBushistas que enfocan solamente en el pueblo de los Estados Unidos, o que contienen paginas de especulaciones sin raices: estas cosas no encontrarás en Contra Bush). Por eso, vale la pena leerlo y tenerlo en tu coleccion.

Un libro muy ingenioso. Los nueve cuentos tratan diferentes aspectos de la relacion de los inmigrantes mexicanos con "el pais de las oportunidades". Recomiendo este libro por realista, entretenido y sobre todo, porque esta excelentemente bien escrito.

Carlos Fuentes tiene un conflicto de identidad muy grande. El trata de ser mexicano hasta el tuetano pero su formacion fue en diversos paises debido a que su padre era embajador. El siente que debe de demostrar que es mexicano escibiendo sobre mexicanos y sus propios conflictos de identidad. En este libro en particular el resultado es muy bueno, sin duda Fuentes puede tener una narativa muy agil y logra describir muy bien el conflicto de identidad visto desde la comoda posicion de la clase media alta.

Al haber leído este libro hace un año y seguir pensando en cada uno de esos cuentos es para mí algo extraordinario. Este libro fue mi introducción a la literatura de Carlos Fuentes, quien es uno de los escritores mexicanos que se merece el elogio que ha recibido durante todos estos años. El hecho de que es un intelectual y escritor en cierta forma exige que nos entregue un producto que no nos falle. Esto ha sido logrado en "La Frontera de Cristal." El "conflicto" que todos los mexicanos padecemos debido a nuestra situación migratoria entre México y Estados Unidos ha sido capturado dentro de las páginas de este libro. Cada relato exige del lector entender cada personaje, su personalidad y su deseo de superación, a pesar del conflicto que se mantiene dentro de nuestra sociedad (por ejemplo, el anciano en la silla de ruedas..."Soy yo.").

No cabe duda que Carlos Fuentes entiende todo esto y más. Y es que un escritor que puede mantener una cierta intimidad con su lector entiende el sufrimiento, la superación personal y la lucha interna del ser humano.

This novelist, maybe most important of today's Maxico and Latin America, give us a nine shortstories of love, immagination, and hope about of possible mexicans and gringos cohabitation in north and south of Rio Grande/rio Bravo for to go through the crystal frontier.

Este libro contiene una copia facsímile del diario personal de Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) escrito por su propia mano en español, seguido por copias de cada pagina con comentarios explicativos y traducciones en inglés. El diario, el cual estuvo oculto al publico en México durante varias décadas, cubre los últimos 10 años de la vida de la artista, cuando se hallaba en medio de muchos problemas físicos y emocionales. Entre otros tópicos, escribe sobre su niñez, sus opiniones políticas y su relación con su marido, el pintor Diego Rivera. Con su colorido texto y esbozos, así como ilustraciones y retratos más elaborados, el diario es una pieza artística por derecho propio.

Frida was more than an artist, she was a woman who knew what she wanted and how to get it. Her only downfall was that she had deep doubts inside her most inner self and shared it with very few.

I guess we all do, but she always wanted people to think she was though when in fact she was very fragile.

Interesting that Calderon now opens a space for a comprehensive display of Kahlo's works in the capitol city, considering the great differences in the politics they espouse so ardently. It is like Rockefeller hiring Diego Rivera for a mural in Manhattan, and scandalized sees Marx and Lenin within!

But such wonders are beyond me, and humbly and happily and gratefully let us receive this excellent facsimile with transcription and commentary of this diary maintained by Frida Kahlo in the final decade of her proud though tormented life. Carlos Fuentes, the famous Mexican novelist contributes one commentary, paired with an introduction by Kahlo scholar Sarah Lowe. Then follows a reporduction of each page of the diary, each page of which we see clearly from Kahlo's own hand, unlike the dubious and revisionist Reagan Diaries recently released. Following the diary pages, each page is then transcribed, commented and put into context very thoroughly. COmprehensive chronologies, bibliogrpahies and indices complete this excellent edition useful to any scholar or Frida fanatic.

Let me note that I received today the second edition, published in September of 2001, and that I have the Spanish edition, which I find more direct and useful than straining to peer through the dim gauze of someone else's transalation of Kahlo's own words. Highly recommended. Deeply and truthfully moving, as everything which falls from the hand of Frida.

Escrito por uno de los grandes nombres de la letra Hispanica, Carlos Fuentes nos lleva por un viaje de sus creencias. El modo es simplemente comenzar con la letra A y terminar con el Z del alfabeto. Tengo este libro en Espanol y Ingles y es interesante leer una letra en las dos idiomas a el mismo tiempo. Tengo que decir que si se pierde algo en algunos occasiones cuando esta en Ingles. Carlos Fuentes puede opinar y escribir sobre muchas temas pero siempre muchas cosas tienen una coneccion con la lectura, posiblemente porque el es un gran lector. Su favoritos incluye Don Quijote, (quien Fuentes dice es un lector tambien)y Cervantes, Faulkner(yo soy colectivo contra las fuerzas de la seperacion), Ortega y Gasset, Julieta Campos y Shakespeare entre otros. Pero tambien Fuentes utilize otras formas de arte como el pintor Velasquez entre otras temas. Pero el limite de ideas no para con estos grandes de lectura y arte porque tambien hay capitulos sobre los grandes de otros artes como Balzac, Bunuel, Kafka y Faulkner . Este libro es facil para leer y si vale la pena por que las ideas que presenta el maestro Fuentes te lleva en una viaje por todo el mundo explorando varios conceptos y gran personajes de la historia humano. Si te gusta Carlos Fuentes es necessario leer este libro para mejor entender el hombre y sus gran novelas y historias.

De esta manera termina este maravilloso libro del Sr. Fuentes, en el que nos acompañará en un viaje que empieza con "Amistad", y termina con "Zurich".

Cada capítulo deshoja el pensamiento de uno de los mejores escritores en lengua hispana vivos, no sólo acerca de cuestiones literarias ("Balzac", "Faulkner", "Odisea", "Kafka", "Quijote"), sino tambien filosóficas ("Amor", "Belleza", "Libertad", "Dios"), sociales ("Educación", "Globalización", "Xenofobia") y políticas ("Izquierda", "Revolución").

Carlos Fuentes es, como todo ser humano, producto de su circunstancia, en este caso hispanoamericana, hija de los años veinte y viajante. Como tal, se puede estar o no de acuerdo con sus ideas, pero inevitablemente admiraremos su elegancia de palabra y pensamiento, y la profundidad de su erudición.

Probablemente no haya mejor obra que nos ayude a entender al escritor mexicano, tanto cómo escritor, como persona.

Archetypical composition that is autobiographical beyond words is Botero. When you've finished reviewing this beautiful book you will know Botero better than many of your friends and possibly some of your relatives.

Currently on a Fuentes kick, I picked up Christopher Unborn. Although written in the 1980's about 1992, Fuentes is completely on target in his subject matter, and his Makesicko of 1992 looks a lot like today.
You will read this and recognize american liberals and conservatives, southern mexican secessionist sympathizers, leftist ideaologues, mall shoppers and reality tv "celebrities" all captured and satirized perfectly. I read this book with a sardonic smile not thinking of the past, but of today.
The man's a genius, and any book of his is worth a good read, but underneath the narrative is a lot of fun. Of the 3 novels I have read, I get the greatest sense that Fuentes truly loved his characters, flawed and cracked as they are.
Some of it is challenging, but Fuentes always is, and usually working through the challenges is highly rewarding.

This book was written on the eve of the 500th year anniversary marking the fateful encounter between the Spanish Euoropeans and the various indigenous groups of the Americas. Not so coincidently, the prolific, briliant writer Carlos Fuentes sets the circumstances to this novel to coincide with the event. The premise for the book is a contest being held in Mexico with a great prize offered for the first born child on the 500th anniversary of Columbus's arrival. The child is Christopher, the narrator of the novel who makes shrewd observations about the world he will be born into, all from the comfort of inside his mother. This allows Fuentes, the author, to rip into all of the ills of modern Mexico with his usually witty and sharp use of lanuage. A master at manipulation of common laguage, he changes the words to fit his vision. Several examples of how he changes words are Mexico City to Makesicko City, Kafkapulco, Quasimodo City, Samsaville, Huitzilopochtliburg or President Dangerous Dickson before the Watergate Waterloo, blockabulary for vocabulary,Califurnace, PornoCorno, Coca-Culo and Acapukelco(or did I make this last one up?). However this is nothing compared to the daggers Christopher throws at everything from the devastation of the earthquake and the aftermath, the PRI, Mexican history and all it's tragic consequences including the massacre at Tlateloco, the narco-polices ties to the narco traffickers themselves and in short, all is fair game for Fuentes via his narrator Christopher. His observations on popular culture include everything from Lennon to Lenin to Boy George. It is a scathing, passionate view of the world Chistopher will enter. Christopher contends his nine months inside his mother are when his life began and this comfort and fear of what is out there make the narration a brutal, wry, cynical commentary. The satirical view is enhanced by a cast of characters who all are part of the make up of a world Christopher will inherit. The action of the novel is a backdrop for a political campaign and all it's cast of characters both for and against.Some of the names of these politicos and associates are Deng Chopin, Hipi Toltec, Fagoaga, Matamoros Moreno, Robles Chacon and D.C Buckley just to name a few. Coming in at over five hundered pages it is no easy read but totally enjoyable. The literature flows beautifully, creating images as only Carlos Fuentes can. As one of the preeminent writers of our times, Fuentes unleashes a novel for the times that will be reflected upon years from now as a masterpiece marking the collision of worlds that occurred five hundred years ago. This is an excellent book for educators at the AP level in high school or college to use for a literature class or to supplement a history course. Highly recommended for anyone interested in Mexico and it's contemporary literature.

This collection of novels is a beautiful and intellgently written volume, one that is an interesting read. If one wants comparisons, it could be compared to Garcia Marquez's style--very dense, very descriptive, very mysterious. There are copies of it available used... Buy it!

Fuentes revels in language and creating imagery that astounds, intrigues and leaves the reader in a land of limbo that is both magical and real. In this seemingly different collection of short stories or novellas the masterful literary pupeteer Fuentes draws the reader into his web of stories that covers centuries of history over various continents. Whether the stories take place in Spain, the United States or Eastern Europe the end result is a timeless portrait with universal themes with evocative resonance. The five stories in this collection have recurrent themes as in the clever classic novel by Fuentes entitled "Christoper Unborn," which is also highly recomended. Of particualar interest in the collection of novellas is "La Desdichada" where two students steal a manequin and fall in love. The storyline borders on the absurd but in reality it is a poets vechicle of expression for love. After all a woman of wood will be faithful to a man but will a man of flesh and blood prove he is worthy of fidelity ? All of the stories are excellent but of particular note was one I found very interesting entitled "Viva Mi Fama." This is a story that leaps from the present to the past by way of a Goya painting of a matador of fame by the name of Pepe Romero. The journey through Andalusia finds the reader tranported to Goya's Spain traversing the countryside from Bordeaux to Madrid and all lands in between. IMO there is no better story teller in Latin America and surely none as prolific as Carlos Fuentes. This is a beautiful collection of stories that are especially good for the person who is new to the visual , visceral and sometimes erotic literature of Fuentes. Great stuff for new and old readers of the magical world of Carlos Fuentes, one of the preeminent man of letters in Latin America.

I have looked at a number of translations of Don Quixote. I don't know why this tranlation is often passed over. It is my favorite by far and I think it stands on its own as a masterpiece. I can't imagine the original language surpassing it.

... avers that, this, the Tobias Smollett English-language translation most faithfully retains the quixotic and sprightly spirit of the original.

Given that life is short and that I will only ever read Don Quixote once, Rushdie's imprimatur is good enough for me.

I first discovered Carlos Fuentes in college with The Death of Artemio Cruz and Where The Air is Clear and he has been a touchstone ever since. Although many of his subsequent novels have fallen short of my expectations, this autobiograophical collection of essays on a variety of subjects is intellectually engaging and insightful into the development of Fuentes the man and the author. A thousand stars!

I have read both the English and original Spanish versions of this tour de force and have found the book totally captivating. When Mr. Fuentes addresses a subject he expands the dinmensions and your perceptions of said subject to the point where you become enlightened beyond your initial understanding. His literary skills are beyond measurement. Mr.Fuentes begins with a simple enough concept of using the alphabet to share with the reader about his personal memories but along the way ventures into political musings, literary forays and comments on contemporary society and global perspectives on a variety of subjects. It is not a "preachy" book but rather one of insights into a brilliant mind and his beliefs. It is a very personal book that exhausts the reader intellectually. However the book is simply a delight in it's eloquence and commanding structure to the point where you feel you have been on a literary and cultural journey and Mr. Fuentes has been your tour guide. He treats his chosen subjects with that rare ability to capture your imagination where you become lost(or found) in his use of language to convey his prowess and understanding of a wide variety of topics. Mr. Fuentes begins with Amor(love) and usually gives each letter several subjects, for example, the letter C has Christ , Children, Cinema and Civil Society as topics. He ends with Zebra and Zurich. One might wonder what could Carlos Fuentes have to say about zebras? He uses his subject as a launching pad for his poetic explorations. What begins as an exploration of the zebra and his stripes and what differentiates him from a horse suddenly begins to explore zoology and all it's marvelous manifestations. Suddenly the animals found in the sea by the early explorers are being discussed. From here Mr. Fuentes takes twists and turns on a variety of subjects including Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein," with stops along the way into other diverse writers and their works like Ray Bradbury, Issac Isimov, Voltaire and Beckford. Dracula, Edgar Allan Poe, Kafka and Mexico-Tenochitlan are all fair game within the letter Z and what began as an exploration of the zebra. He ties all the subjects together by weaving a brilliant narrative that leaves you spellbound. I would highly recommend this book along with many of his other books that is written by the best writer Mexico has produced. As Mr.Fuentes states, " We think we know the world. Now, we must imagine it."
