THE definitive work on Wright's Furniutre!
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-13
Frank Lloyd Wright began designing furniture over 100 years ago and yet this is the only comprehensive book on his 75 years of work. The book offers contemporary and historical views of many Wright interiors featuring the furniture in the original context for the most part. Much of this furniture has now been removed from the houses. Several of these pieces are on view in museums but much of it went into private collections. The range of views of the furniture is unique to the kind of book that Heinz has become well-known for. He finds views that can show features and arrangements of parts that other photographers seem to be blind to. When Heinz includes more than one example of a chair, either by using two chairs of the same design but faced front and side, or by including several designs [as in the Dana House] or with the designs of others [with Mackintosh, Stickley and the Greene brothers] they tell more than any text or caption could. The large page format is also helpful in showing the detail of each example. The types of wood and grain directions as well as finishes and textures assists in the analysis of the work. Heinz even goes outside the title definition of the book and includes associated examples of Wright's work as the chapter on rugs and textiles shows well. This may be the only concentration of Wright's textile designs. This is refreshing, to see the originals. in light of the "interpretations" that are now in the marketplace confusing the issue and the real genius of Wright's work. Interiors and Furniutre is a great companion book to Heinz's Glass Art which was issued at the same time and by the same publisher as this volume. This will be the definitive work for many years to come.

Good companion to the text and audio
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-16
Used in combination with the audio materials, this course promises so much more than the usual (colors, numbers, basic greetings, etc.), and places a strong emphasis on pronunciation and idioms. You finish with a useful knowledge of French--the kind people actually speak. Comprehension is difficult at first because the speakers talk at a normal pace without overemphasizing the words, but it is this technique that leaves one able to know what people are saying without having them slow down.

As for the method of delivery--it's fun! The textbook follows a narrative structure, specifically a story about Robert, an American student in France, and Mireille, a young and witty student at the famed Sorbonne in Paris. There is love, mystery, and lots of important cultural information on the way, as well as an underlying humor that made our class laugh quite often. I recommend it highly for use in a class, and if you are willing to dish out the cash, for independent study as well. It has everything you need to gain a firm grounding in French language, culture, and idioms.

While the workbook is not crucial to the program, it helps practice written skills that might otherwise get neglected. It also goes well with certain audio activities and reinforces the material.

Sander's New One: More Great Science Fiction
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-20
The name Thomas J. Sanders must be included in any list of the best Science Fiction writers of our day.

His newest offering is God's Fire, following closely on the heels of The God Chip Conspiracy, his brilliant debut novel of last year. God's Fire's cast of zany but brilliant characters are actually the ancestors of the heroes of The God Chip Conspiracy, and this story is set in the same universe, but 120 years earlier. No matter though, since time in a Sanders novel sometimes turns around and meets itself coming, and both books can be read as complete stories, and in the order you choose.

In God's Fire, we learn more about the development of the God Chip and its first recipients: Joy, a high-tech love doll and CHESTER, the Complete Human Environment Simulation for Tacticel Emergency Response. Our hero, Galileo Newton Goddard, destined from the moment his name was typed on a birth certificate to become the world's greatest scientist, is the creator of the God Chip. Caught in a squeeze play between the forces or irrationality and love, he confronts the ultimate technological dilemna: Can a man find true love and happiness with a machine?

Sander's penchant for mixing complex scientific thought, philosophical allusions and illusions, with a folksy way of storytelling and an almost bizarre but impressive imagination, make every page of God's Fire a work of science fiction art. You'll be guessing all the way through where it will go next.

If you could merge, or clone perhaps, Asimov and Vonnegut, and sprinkle in some cellular matter from Heinlein, you could aptly name the offspring of that mix Thomas J. Sanders.

I enthusiastically recommend God's Fire to all readers, and especially to science fiction lovers.

Handbook Of Clinical Health Psychology: Models And Perspectives In Health Psychology is the collaborative editorial effort of Robert G. Frank (Professor of Clinical and Health Psychology, College of Public Health & Health Professions, University of Florida) , Andrew Baum (Deputy Director for Cancer Control and Pupulation Sciences, University of Pittsburgh Caner Institute), and Jan L Wallander (Principle Research Scientist, Sociometrics Corporation, Lost Altos, Californa and Research Professor of Psychology, University of Albama - Birmingham), and the final volume of an impressive and ground-breaking three-part series from the American Psychological Association. An extensive examination and study of the theories that psychologists use to create heuristic paradigms for health psychology, volume three is an anthology of essays by learned authors discussing such topics as personality theory, pratical considerations involved in payment for clinical services, behavioral epidemiology, measuring health outcomes in psychology, and much more. A well-rounded, professional compendium especially recommended for practitioners in the field.

Valuable contribution to the field
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-30
This handbook of more than 400 pages contains contributions from established experts. The book opens with a Foundations section which introduces readers to the solution-focused approach. Assumptions, history and epistemology are described in this section. Section two describes Applications like couples therapy, depression, domestic violence offenders and applications in school settings. The rest of the book describes solution-focused training (section three) and some concluding chapters (section four). I think this book is a valuable contribution to the literature on the solution-focused approach because it describes the state of the art. It is not only interesting to people who are new to the field but also to experienced 'solutionists'. This book is -of course- aimed at an audience of therapists and not primarily intended for solution-focused practioners who apply it in a business context, like myself. But if you really want to know everything about SF, you can't miss this book, no matter in what context you use the approach. I especially liked chapters by Yvonne Dolan (tribute to Insoo Kim Berg), by Frank Thomas (about limitations and misuses) and most of all by Brian Cade (about the history of the solution-focused approach). This book shows how much alive the solution-focused approach still is.

Justice Restored Review!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-10-24
Justice Restored depicts the life of two men who meet one morning in 1981, one young man is a nationally ranked amateur athlete working the graveyard shift, the other young man is a high school dropout on parole, he and his 5 friends wanted to commit a simple robbery which escalated into something much bigger. Years later the two men would meet again and that meeting would garner worldwide attention. It is a story of victimization and what victims of crime and life go through, something we don't much hear about, the nightmares, the PTSD, the anger, the unresolved questions as to why me. It is also a story of why the recidivism rate among offenders is so high, the book takes twists and turns, too unbeliveable at times to be true, it's shocking and dramatic and gives society another way to look at our retributive criminal justice system, I recommend this book to anyone who has been or knows a victim or anyone interested in crime.

Whether beginning a Liturgy Committee or reforming an existing one, this book covers the guidelines as to how to accomplish everyone's goal of great liturgy. It re-focuses the energy of the committee from the extreme details to the overall enviroment.

The explanation of what the committee should focus on, how to focus on the selected part of the liturgy, and evaulate how the effect of the focus of the committee, is invaluable to accomplishing the the committee's goals.

The book also addresses what 'everyone' thought a Liturgy Committee was all about and how to overcome those preconceived ideas and communicate the real meaning to the commuity.

Anyone who wants to have a great impact on the liturgy of their parish should purchase this book for each member of the committee.

Great read about an interesting time in American Christianity
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-11-04
A truly interesting read about one individual's experience with seminary life in mid-20th Century America. Each brief story captures another facet of modern Christianity that crystalizes with the authors decision to become an "Ex-Minister." On a deeper level, it is an excellent exploration into Christian relationships and actions on a personal, rather than a denominational level. "Tony Pal's" story of personal discovery speaks to the dilemma Christianity has had through the centuries, how to make an organized religion of one that essentially started as one of individual enlightenment.
An excellent read.
