The Mathew Arnold's conception is wiser and more comprehensive

The conception of the 'classic' which stands at the center of this work is Vergilian.Kermode writes, "Vergil as the classic of empire and the type of all classics" He then goes on to read this Vergilian idea as it goes through transformations in Western culture. Centering on the question of 'permanence and change' he comes to a definitiion of the modern classic which introduces concepts of plurality , secularization, and change.
I found this work extremely difficult to read. I also found it did not really deal in a way I would have liked to have seen with literary matters and texts, though its concluding example is an analysis of 'Wuthering Heights'.
I much prefer Arnold's way of thinking about ' the best that has been thought and said'. And his relating it to ' classic works' which surely precede those of Vergil, what Arnold calls the Hellenic and Hebraic.
As for the question of what makes a work one which all subsequent generations wish to read and reread, I believe this touches upon a question Kermode does not raise, i.e. What constitutes true literary greatness?'

The Confederate fighting man is the subject of these 11
very touching short stories written by the likes of F.Scott Fitzgerald and Thomas Wolfe. You don't have to be a
Civil War fanatic or a Southerner to appreciate this book.
You only have to love a well crafted story

Excellant companion book for practice development

This book is written in an accessible and practical format. It assumes nothing but at the same time treats the reader as an intelligent participant on the journey to understanding evidence based practice.
It is up to date and I was especially impressed with the web address it gives to ensure the reader is kept abreast of any changes since publication.
It systematically explains the need and use of 'evidence', how to find it (the search advice is comprehensive and includes details such as search terms and the best search engines aswell as web addresses) how to evaluate it and also how to act on it.
All in all this book was great, and I would reccomend it to anyone involved in evidence based healthcare practice as it will guide you through the thorniest problems.

Cross-Cultural Communication: A Trainer's Manual by Frank R. Oomkes and Richard H. Thomas provides not only a large collection of exercises and activities, but also training outlines and planning tips to assist the cross-cultural trainer to conduct and evaluate cross-cultural training events. It is reminiscent of the Pfeiffer and Jones Annuals published by University Associates in that permission to reproduce the contents is given with the purchase of the book. The handouts are clearly marked and laid out for photocopying on 8 1/2" x 11" paper. The creative trainer can use the richly annotated index to mine the volume to customize her or his own interventions
While a good part of the manual is focused directly on Cross-cultural Communication as the title suggests, there are sections on handling conflict, culture shock and culture learning, values and beliefs. In short, Oomkes and Thomas provide a general course in cultural competence, Wile there is little culture specific information, many of the exercises are structured in such a way as to bring out such details about other individuals and groups in an anecdotal fashion.
Both those in global businesses and management, as well as consultants and academics will find much that is useful in these pages. The approach is distinctly European and has to do more with working across national boundaries and being effective away from home than it does with the acculturation of a culturally diverse workforce or the issues of racism, sexism and the other "isms" which are more familiar approaches to North Americans. Managing diversity is itself diverse as this European resource reminds us.

Space soap opera

One of Marvel's greatest creations is the alien Kree race, and with ESSENTIAL CAPT. MARVEL we get to see some of the inner workings of that interstellar empire. However, most of the action takes place right on Earth, specifically near the "Cape" in Florida, presumably Cape Canaveral. Capt. Mar-Vell is sent to examine humanity, but ends up becoming infatuated with its people and culture. The soap opera-ish tit-for-tat between Mar-Vell, Colonel Yon-Rogg and Medic Una gets a bit weary at times, but it's all good fun. Gene Colan's spectacular pencils grace the early reprints; it's a shame he didn't remain. However, the equally impressive Gil Kane has art chores on the waning issues so all is not lost.
It's fairly easy to see how readers may have lost interest back-when in what was a very promising start for the title. The writers seem to have gotten bored approx. mid-way through the book's collection, and end up squandering great opportunities. The fates of Yon-Rogg and Una were incredibly anti-climactic, and the transformation of the Capt. into his commonly known garb was muddled. Still, this book is one of the better Silver Age collections of a second-tier character, and mediocre scripting gets a positive bump from above-average art.

"The Fight For The White House" provides a month by month account of the roads taken by the three presidents who competed for the White House in the pivotal year of 1912. Its journalistic style reflects author Frank K. Kelly's background as a news reporter. Each month has its own chapter which includes sections devoted to William Howard Taft, Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson and a short section headlining notable non-campaign events of the month.
The story begins in January 1912 with William Howard Taft ensconced in the White House, Theodore Roosevelt planning to undue his mistake in putting Taft there and Woodrow Wilson thinking that he might be the man to take advantage of a split in the opposition to take the White House for himself.
As the year goes on, Taft and Roosevelt fight it out for the Republican nomination with TR winning the primaries, Taft holding the professional politicians and a very nasty culmination brewing for the convention in Chicago. Ultimately it was Taft's control of the organization which permitted the defeat of the Roosevelt challenge to contested delegations which lead to Taft's nomination and the bolting of the Progressive wing of the party. TR was later nominated in a hastily summoned Progressive Party convention in Baltimore. Wilson spent the early part of the year in tough and, at times, a seemingly hopeless struggle against House Speaker Champ Clark. It took forty-six ballots but Wilson ultimately prevailed and relished the chance to take on a divided opposition. Throughout this all, Sen. Robert M. La Follette of Wisconsin, self-designated progressive leader, stewed and sputtered until he finally threw his support to Wilson.
With the unique slate of nominees chosen (the only time three presidents, past, present and future competed), it was off to the races, at least for TR and Wilson. While they crisscrossed the country trashing each other and Taft, Taft largely remained in the White House and waited for the country to tire of the carnival shows and reward his unruffled dignity. Throughout the summer and fall this three ring circus entertained the country until October when Roosevelt was shot by a third term opponent in Milwaukee. What is less known is that during the same month Wilson's Pullman car was damaged by a run away freight car, leaving Wilson unhurt. How history could have changed that month!
Although poling was unknown, the drift of a Wilson victory became more and more apparent as Election Day approached. Wilson's expected victory materialized and each was left to choose his path for the future. Wilson tried one last legislative initiative as governor of New Jersey before turning his attention to national issues, TR moved the Progressive Party back to the center in an attempt to maintain its vitality while Taft considered his options before accepting an offer to be a law professor at Yale.
In this book, Frank K. Kelly does a great job in telling the story of a most interesting year in our history. Although many of us may know the outlines of the story, this book contains interesting facts which many, certainly including myself, would not have known. Without saying so, he shows how the outcome was not inevitable, how things could have turned out differently and leaves us to ponder the effects any changes would have had on the later history of our country. If TR had won, would our domestic institutions have undergone a more radical change? How would a Roosevelt Administration have affected World War I? How would the survival of the Progressive Party have altered our body politic, for better or worse? If TR and Wilson had both been killed in October, would Taft, as the last survivor, have won and what effect would that have had on our country? Any book which can provoke such questions is one worth reading.

In this album review, 83 architectural projects (mostly houses) are illustrated by excellent signature photos in color and without text descriptions or technical drawings. The only text is an introductory analysis of technical aspects of the Wright's designs on 7 pages with illustrating b&w photos on 5 pages. The book has glossy, white paper and high quality printing and binding, but it is slightly inferior to "Frank Lloyd Wright American Architect For The Twentieth Century". ISBN: 1854901052 (HC), ISBN: 1854901109 (PB), ISBN: 0312072430 (HC) or ISBN: 0312071493 (PB) only.
