ANOTHER GOOD ONE FOR FLEMING

At first I was goin to give this book three stars then four and now after the last couple chapters I give it a five! The book is entertaining and gets stronger as you turn the pages. Fleming does a good job describing things as usual and I'm mad that they didnt add another chapter so that Bond and Tiffany could bond together some more. It felt like you really got to know her. But anyway, this is a good read and the book becomes a thriller in the later chapters!

This is Ian Fleming's homage to the mystique of the American gangster. Fleming's vision of the American gangster is one of a twisted, often emotionally and physically, violent character teeming with idiosyncrasies. They are a peculiar bunch to say the least. James Bond appears to be more the knight in shining armor in this novel than in most written by Fleming. Much of this can be attributed to the tough but sympathetic character of Tiffany Case whom Bond becomes emotionally attached and must rescue. It is interesting how in the film series the two primary directors, Terrence Young and Guy Hamilton, were influenced by the literary Bond created by Fleming. Hamilton seems to have been greatly influenced by this novel more than any of Fleming's others. We see Fleming's 1950's version of American hoodlums show up in Hamilton's "Goldfinger," "Diamonds Are Forever" and even at the beginning of "The Man With The Golden Gun." Terrence Young on the other hand seems to be more influenced by Ian Fleming's worldly hero on a more personal level and Fleming's picturesque travelogue pacing. This novel does not have the narrative flow of some of Fleming's best, but it does contain interesting scenes between James Bond and "M" and the overall description of the diamond smuggling pipeline is pure Fleming. Recommended reading.

One of Ian Fleming's Best.... But Not The Greatest

"Diamonds Are Forever" is one of Ian Fleming's best James Bond books that I have read. It contains a great storyline, yet the plot is not too deep as in its preceader, Moonraker. Yet, still, it deserves the 4 star mark, missing the 5. This book is good, but it contains some character inconsistencies with James Bond. For example, in the first book in the series, "Casino Royale" James Bond says that he always puts the job first. In fact, this is stressed greatly when he is chatting with girl. Later, in "Diamonds Are Forever," James Bond puts the girl before the job, which quite odd being the character that he is in the books. But other than that, this is a great book that should be read. If you have seen the movie, DO NOT BE FOOLED. The book is almost entirely different. There are no gay men and there is no satellite and oil well involved. The closest thing in the book is the boat ride at the end, and even there it is almost entirely different. Still, though, this book is excellent and should be read.
