This is an excellent book to read. Many of us take family matters to seriously, like me. When I read Dr. Anderson book, I began to laugh as she addresses the family life with lots of humor in her book. I thought it was our family that acts that way, but it was good to no other family acts the same way. I strongly recommend every one to read this book. Thank you Dr. Anderson for writing this book. It is true when they say laughter is good for the soul, and I promise you will be laughing up a storm.

This is such a refreshingly funny, thought provoking and interesting way to enjoy life through the pages of a book. I loved it, you can close your eyes and point to a chapter and laugh on through to the next ten before you know it. Monica has such a unique style that is all 'Moe' Keep up the good work, looking forward to the novel.

I have really enjoyed this book. As a wife and mother, I can relate to many of the amusing stories. They come to mind when I least expect it. Once you read this book you may find yourself remembering the stories and laughing to your self. If your friends wonder what you are laughing about, maybe they should read the book!

If I didn't know differently, I would be convinced that Monica Anderson grew up in my house. Some of her columns, especially My Sister's Parents, almost convinced me that she was a part of my family. While reading this book there were times I laughed out loud - in public - causing others around me to stare, but I didn't mind. I told them to buy the book so they'd understand. There were a few times while reading some of the columns, I actually picked up the phone to call a girlfriend (long distance)to share excerpts such as "My only sad Thanksgiving was in 1989. I'll never forget that one. That was the year that my inner thighs first met each other. Before that, there was no communication between them unless I crossed my legs..." Very funny, indeed. Monica Anderson has a sharp wit and a great sense of humor. She has captured the charm and the essence of relationships, parenthood and life on the pages of this wonderful book.

The book "Mom Are We There Yet" is all about real life. It tells stories about events, people and places that everyone can relate to from their own lives. The stories are ones that make you think about what things are really the most important in your life. They are told with a wonderful sense of humor that makes the seriousness of their subject sneak up on you. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants an insight into thier own family life.

Number me among the many who read this book in grade school back in the late 60's or 70's and the name stuck with me through the years.

Later as an adult, I returned to this book to read it anew and experience the magic again.

Yes, this is book designed for the younger reader. But as is the case with most well written books, all ages will find something to take away. Treasure Island, Kidnapped etc. are all of the same genre, but what makes Moonfleet unique is the tight identification of the young protagonist John Trenchard and the first person telling which brings the reader into seeing and experiencing it though his eyes.

For a book published in 1898 and set in 1757 and following, that youth in the 60's would find it so fascinating and real is a testament to the talent of Falkner.

Timeless. Engaging. Intriguing. Fantastic!

Did I mention that I like it and recommend it heartily?

Moonfleet is a story that you just want to read over and over again. The beginning is kinda slow but by Chapter Four you will be reading till the wolves come home. This book as you can tell by my review is very addictive to read, I would recommend to anyone who is bored with Harry Potter or who despretly needs a good read. P.S Don't get hooked on Elziver..... if you buy this book you will know why. :P

On par with "Treasure Island" or "Count of Monte Cristo"

It's 1757. Fifteen-year old John Trenchard is bored living with his Aunt Jane in the shoreline village of Moonfleet in England - unitl his discovery of a secret thrusts him into a fugitive existence. The relatively dullish opening sets you up for a rivetting adventure, complete with "ghosts," an underground tunnel, smugglers, and the quest for a pirate's jewel treasure. Very atmospheric. Very intriguing.

A great adventure

I read this in high school and saw it for 50 cents in a used book store. Best money i have ever spent. This story is about a young boy that "finds" a large diamond and consequently spends 10 years in prison with his elder friend and companion. He has a "Y" branded on his face and struggles to return home where his love is keeping a candle in the window for him to guide his return.(This is where Credence Clearwater Revival got the idea for the song "Long as I Can see the Light") There are some really awesome twists regarding the ownership of the diamond as it changes hands time and again...True, this is a "kids book" but the story and writing are fantastic... The ending is pure brilliance!

I suggest you grab a copy of this book next time you are at the book store - It contains a lot more treasure than just the diamond.

This book has clays and doughs made from every imaginable ingredient (dryer lint!!). It is not only thorough but the directions are clear and easy to follow. The book is arranged in a way that makes it easy to find the perfect recipe to meet your needs; cooked vs. non-cooked for example. I use it often for my preschool classroom.

This book is far better organized than some activity books by other authors. Every activity has a symbol in the corner of the page indicating the age range for each project. Additional symbols for cooking, no cooking, air dry, bake dry, edible, caution, and "adult supervision always necessary" are used when applicable. These symbols make it very easy to flip through the book to find a good project for your child(ren). It is especially useful when trying to find projects for children of mixed ages. The layout of the directions is excellent with one project per page, materials clearly listed, mixture process easily explained, and then many optional variations and ideas to further change or expand on the basic project.

Lots of dough's, modeling compounds, homemade beads, plaster and papier mache projects. A section with edible items such as dog biscuits, pie crust, gingerbread and pretzels. At 150 pages you can imagine there is a lot here to keep you busy for a long time. Many of the projects can be made with ingredients most people have on hand at home. Some projects are fast and easy and others are more complex.

I would highly recommend this for every parent, teachers of young children, and even babysitters. This would make a great birthday gift as an alternative to toys, for 2 year-olds and up. I have found this very helpful on days when my children seem bored with our usual daily routine and on rainy days. As a homeschooling mother I have a lot of projects to do with my children, many of which I know are usually done in preschool or kindergarten.

WONDERFUL!

I guess this book has been around since the late 80's, but it's new to me! My kids and I are on #12 of the 30 playdough possibilities. Cinnamon Dough has been my daughter's favorite, while Shampoo Dough is my son's. I like plain old salt/flour playdough with color added. This book has all the recipies you will ever need for doughs, and other squishy modeling compounds. We haven't tried any plaster of Paris projects yet, but we will! I think we will try the one that you do at the beach -- making some kind of sand casting.

So wonderful it's coming out in Spanish too!

Now I heard that Bright Ring Publishing is putting this book out in a Bilingual Spanish Edition! I can't wait to use it in the classroom! What a wonderful resource and bold move! Bravo! And thank you from all of my Spanish-speaking students! They will love to see projects in their own language!

This set of books by Mager is well put together. These books offer a common sense approach to training and development. Included are how to design a program, realistic objectives, implimenting the program and then tracking the benefits of the training program. These books do not offer super-fancy techniques of teaching, what they do offer you are a set of basic approaches that will work in many different situations.
These books teach through humor and anecdotes as well as real-life stories that can help you place the possibly daunting task of training into a task that you can complete.

First Intimations of Filipino Lives

Review Date: 2001-04-30
Of Love and Virtue brings back memories of people and events that Carmen Davino portrays with intimate knowledge and empathy. Her strongest characters--Cristina's mother and grandmother--are especially memorable largely because they remind us of other women we have known. The mother's meteoric rise from near poverty to a place in "high society" is credible because, more than likely, the readers are acquainted with a few women who have achieved similar success despite familiar obstacles. More than a novel of romance, this first work of fiction by an educator also is intended as a glimpse at Filipino culture and society, and for non-Filipino readers, this may very well be their first intimations of authentic Filipino lives.

I loved reading the book!!! I greatly appreciated the women's strong characters which determined the struggle to find oneself in this confusing era of the 20th century. And mostly the main character, Cristina, whose naive ingenuity and talents reminded me of my own childhood, growing up as a minority in a world where success is hard to attain is the archetype of an old mentality.

These two authors have opened up their hearts and shared their lives and their wisdom with us. How heartbreaking and bittersweet are the stories that supplement the practical guidance. You will laugh out loud, you will cry with heartbreak, you will wonder at these two mothers' strengths and you will say "I wish I had thought of that". The personal stories are riveting and intense but the abundant practical advice is invaluable and extremely helpful. The authors have earned my gratitude for sharing generously their unexpected lessons.

This outstanding book (and its authors!) have just been recognized by the Autism Society of America for making a "significant contribution to autism awareness, education, and advocacy in the last 5 years." The authors are two very experienced mothers whose sons (now adults) are on the opposite ends of the autism spectrum, and through this remarkable book they offer guidance, hope, and valuable personal insight to all parents of children with ASD. This is a poignant, intelligent, and honest work that has quickly become a classic in the autism literature. The personal experiences and knowledge that the authors share will benefit parents and professionals alike, and the book is highly recommended for anyone who lives or works with individuals on the autism spectrum.

This is a wonderful book for anyone who wants to know more about autism. An added treat is that it is well written and well thought out. The authors Maureen F. Morrell and Ann Palmer are moms who raised autistic boys at opposite ends of the severity scale, offering sometimes painfully honest accounts of daily life, disappointments and triumphs. I believe this book could be enormously comforting to parents grandparents, friends and teachers of autistic children--the advice and insights are based on experiences spanning babyhood and diagnosis to adulthood and leaving home. What's it like to be told your child has autism? How can you survive day to day? Will you love an autistic child the same way you love their siblings? What happens when autistic kids grow up? For each mom, the answers were slightly different, and yet the same. I found much of what I wanted to know, including one shocking statistic about the march of this affliction--one in 5,000 children in the 1980s to just one in 166 in 2005! The one thing I wish the book had included was a paragraph or two of opinion and analysis. I wanted to know what two moms in the trenches believe is happening to our kids. How scared should we be? Is there promising news on the horizon? Perhaps they felt that analysis is irrelevant in the reality of day-to-day living with autism. However, they do review a couple of dozen additional publications. I recommend this informitive, sad, funny book to anyone, whether they've been personally touched by autism or not.

Amazing!!

This is a fabulous book that shares with the reader two different ends of the Autism Spectrum. Ann Palmer and Maureen Morrell have managed to share an incredible range of emotions seamlessly. As a parent of a child with ASD I truly felt I was not alone and that there is survival in raising a child with such a baffling disorder. This is a must read for any parent who is going down the ASD road and needs the honest and raw support these two writers offer. I hope all professionals and support people in the ASD area will recommend this book to those they work with. Thanks Ann and Maureen for opening your hearts and sharing your lives with us all.

Great Book!!! The book is written interestingly and in a very well wording way. The standpoint of the writer integrating naturally into the real life of the reader needs accompanied with a blaze of practical examples which the writer has taken from the real life of his experience. Personally I have done a fascinating use the book to redesign software related process, and I can certainly say that from background in engineering, one can do a tremendously use of this book in any related technical \ business areas and probably more. I must admit that I felt a bit uneasy when I found out that this book, which was recommended to me by a friend, had been written by someone with a PhD. In my experience, books written by PhDs are often very academic, difficult to read, and end up telling me what I already know in a very convoluted way.

This book, however, dares to enter "dangerous academic territory" by, for example, defining "knowledge" and measuring it in different instances of business communication. Even in doing so, its ideas make sense and are logically consistent. It also wraps everything up nicely by proposing a methodology (MetaProi) to put the ideas in the book into practice and showing the results of the use of that methodology.

I think this book might get a "thumbs down" from academic ivory tower dwellers. From me (what do I know?), it gets two thumbs up!

Ned's book is great! I used his nine-step system (MetaProi) to facilitate four Business Process Improvement Teams in a local audio visual supply company. All four teams modeled, redesigned, and developed an implementation plan for at least one business process. Three of the four teams went on to successful implementation of their plans. One dynamo team solved several problems. Other than the kickoff, there were no face-to-face meetings. The widely distributed teams used collaborative technologies for nearly all interactions, resulting in minimal impact to daily operations. Participants were excited about growing with new methodologies and technologies.

This book will be essential reading for those wishing to develop insight into process improvement methodologies, which span popular business process reengineering and total quality improvement movements, and the use of computer mediated communication (groupware) to support these process improvement efforts. In particular, the marriage of the Metaproi methodology and groupware techniques, presented and illustrated with field experience, will be invaluable for those researching or undertaking process improvement projects.

I highly recommend this wonderful book to anyone who wants to learn how to take control of their financial future. The financial truths in this book apply to Generation X and Boomers alike. Mr. Teitelbaum makes the complex seem simple and takes the mystery out of investing. He has written this book for people who are not financial experts, so you can feel confident that his book can and will help you learn how to handle your finances. Mr. Teitelbaum explains the world of personal investing in a smooth, easy-reading style. So, whether you are a beginning investor or somewhat experienced, this book can serve as an invaluable resource. Mr. Teitelbaum champions the get quick slowly approach to investing based in common sense and long-term planning. If you are interested in building wealth but are prone to a get-rich-quick approach, then this book is the tonic you need. Mr. Teitelbaum addresses all of the building blocks to wealth creation including: sensible budeting, ridding yourself of expensive debt, developing a savings plan and developing a solid long-term investment plan. Also, he provides valuable insight into the usual suspects (stocks, bonds, mutual funds, life insurance and annuites) and explains how they fit within a broader investment philosophy. Mr. Teitelbaum gives broad coverage to so many areas of personal finance that his book will also serve as a great reference guide. He also, shows you where to find out more information about a particular financial topic. I consider this book a great achievement, and it will undoubtedly help many people. I highly recommend this book. I give it 5 stars!!!

Though this book is aimed at baby boomers, I, who have been collecting Social Security for several years, found the book illuminating and educational. Like most Americans, I grew up disinterested in what I perceived to be too difficult in learning more about savings and investing - both how to do it and why they are both so important. I'd certainly be more comfortable in retirement now had I had this knowledge years ago! In addition, numbers have always baffled me. David Teitelbaum's book provided an easy gateway to learning about financing retirement, getting out of debt, how to start investing, and how the markets work. His writing is warm, friendly, and easy to follow, and you certainly feel that he cares about you as well as what he is writing about. I particularly found the chapter on Family, with its discussions on life insurance, long-term care planning, and wealth transfer, both useful and helpful. Because of what I have learned from his book, I am encouraging my adult children and grandchildren to read it and be more prepared than I was.

The author makes a very good point in this book--that most of us are not taught in school this basic life skill of budgeting and investing our money. He makes another good point that the quality of each person's life in retirement will depend to a great extent to how well he/she has planned and invested, because no longer do most of us work for paternal companies that take care of us. Even the federal government's retirement plans are not what they once were. We're expected to make more and more choices for ourselves, and most of us are oblivious about what we'll have in retirement. We also don't want to think about long-term care, but we can see how important it is as we look around and see our parents needing care and are suddenly surprised to see that Medicare/Medicaid doesn't go far. I, for one, never was exposed to any of the basics, and I admit have no head for it. My eyes glaze over at the mention of dollars and cents. But this book is so easy to follow and so logical that I feel like the author is personally holding me by the hand and starting me out with Step One. There are background chapters about, for example, how Social Security got started; how it used to work; how it works now; and what we can and can't expect it to do for us in retirement. There is an excellent index that enables the reader to search for specific topics. There are easy-to-follow headings on things like What Drives Up the Market, Paying for Long-Term Care, and Buying Mutual Funds At Banks. The author even includes website information, which makes the book all the more useful. In short, this is a basic handbook--not just for baby boomers, but for younger people starting out. I've given two copies to recent college graduates entering the workforce because I don't want them to be as oblivious as I was for so many years. I want to thank the author for opening my eyes before it was too late!

Stuart Clark produced a great adventure which captures you in the first chapter. It has a new take on aliens. The main character goes to different worlds and collects different alien "species" for the zoo on earth. A hidden plot takes them to a planet which they have to go thru alot of action and adventure and survival to make their way back. I would recommend this book. Can't wait till the sequal is out.

An old-school thrill-ride!

Stuart Clark is a rising star in science fiction, judging by the reaction to his splendid first novel, "Project U.L.F." A swift-moving adventure, it cleverly transfers "The Lost World" to, literally, a lost world; an unnamed planet 2.7 light years beyond Centauri Red 603. The easy prose and unwavering pace invite you to sit down, strap in, and enjoy the ride.

The shameful past that Wyatt Dorren hides only fuels his drive as head of Project U.L.F., a division of the Interplanetary Zoo tasked with collecting unseen creatures from across the galaxy. He's become good at his job. Too good. And that means someone wants him out of the way. Wyatt and his team of misfits find themselves stranded on an uncharted and very dangerous planet, fending off Clark's imaginative repertoire of critters and beasties as they look for a way home.

It comes as no complaint that "Project U.L.F."'s plot is relatively straightforward; that is the novel's strength. There are a number of twists, turns and betrayals, to be sure, but the joy is in riding along with Wyatt as he works overtime getting out of jams while travelling from Point A to Point Beta Epsilon. A movie thrillride if ever there was one, "Project U.L.F." packs in the set pieces while never feeling manufactured for show.

The ensemble crew have their own trials along the way, and all (well, most all) come across as endearing despite their flaws. I particularly liked Chris, the naive medic who is much more than he seems, and Gon-Thok, the... what the heck is Gon-Thok, anyway? If anything, I thought Furball was underutilized -- while more was hinted at with his empathy, it didn't seem to come to fruition.

If you're yearning for a good, solid adventure of the kind 'they don't seem to make anymore', you're in for a treat with "Project U.L.F.". Me? I'm just waiting for the next installment -- same Clark time, same Clark channel.

Books like this simply validate my love of science fiction. Not only are Clark's characters realistic and interesting, but the storyline is extremely engaging. From the time I first sat down to read, straight through to the end, I was captivated.

Wyatt Dorren heads Project U.L.F. (Unidentified Life Form) for the Interplanetary Zoological Park. In the past, he has been a trapper, visiting various planets and collecting different species of extraterrestrial life to bring back to the zoo. So, when he is offered to lead another mission of the same, which he thinks will be good for promoting the zoo, he agrees. But, unbeknownst to Wyatt, the Douglas Mannheim has other plans for this "routine" mission. The disreputable Mannheim is the manager of the zoo, and feels threatened by Wyatt. So, he assembles a special team for Wyatt and sends them on a one-way trip to a planet from which no one has returned.

Mannheim isn't the only one with an ulterior motive. And the planet is much more dangerous than anyone imagines. With deadly creatures around every corner, not everyone will survive this nightmare.

Comparable to tense, science fiction movies such as Alien and Pitch Black, Project U.L.F. is a guaranteed non-stop, heart-pounding thriller. At the end of each chapter, I felt like I could finally exhale in relief. Cleverly written from different points of view (and sometimes of the aliens themselves), only added to the suspense. Clark's vivid depiction of the deadly planet and imaginative creatures brought the book to life. I'll be looking forward to more works from this new author.

Anyone care for adventure, suspense, and intrigue?

What a surprisingly good book!!! I kept expecting aliens to come charging out at the main characters like in Alien or Aliens (I loved those movies by way). But the author refreshingly throws many different kinds of aliens and obstacles at the characters--everything from alien vegetation to corrupt corporate executives and a whole lot of creatures in between. Even the environment has it in for the heroes. Speaking of the heroes, they are a group of trappers working for the Interplanetary Zoological Park based in Chicago. They travel to new worlds in other star systems collecting new and unusual specimens for the zoo to let the masses to ooh and ah over. Sounds like fun, right.

The story is set several hundred years into humanity's future, and it is a plausible one at that. Clark's writing style is smooth and easy to follow. The characters are believable and likeable--a must for a good novel like this one. The only thing I can possibly find slightly off with Project U.L.F. (Unidentified Life Forms) is that there are times when the narrative goes on with explanation or background. Do not get me wrong, I loved this book and there is plenty of dialogue--I am just not a big fan of narrative information. This was only minor issue, hence the five-star rating. I look forward to seeing more novels from Clark. He is definitely a science fiction fan.

Great entertainment!

This book was recommended to me by a friend, and I loved it! I occasionally read science fiction and fantasy literature, and sometimes I run into problems when the terminology gets too difficult to understand without reading an entire series, or when the storylines are too far-fetched. This book was great - it had enough elements of science fiction to keep it entertaining for the genre, but it did not get bogged down in scientific jargon or boring explanations and descriptions.

The book started off in full swing, taking you right into some of the main character's experiences fighting his own demons. It was abrupt, but not in a confusing way - there was just enough uncertainty to really draw you in and make you want to find out more. The story progresses smoothly and the characters are well developed and interesting. There are a few twists and surprises, and lots of action. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants a light yet stimulating, exciting and fun read.
