My parents have been JT fans for over 30 years and own over 100 different titles by JT. I have read every one (many over and over), and while I love Waco and the Ysabel Kid my favorite character is Danny Fog despite the fact that he appears only in two stories (The `Bad Bunch' and `Running Irons'/'Cow Thieves') before being brutally murdered in `A Town Called Yellowdog'. `Running Irons' was previously published only in England and my dad spent years tracking down a copy for me. It is very fragile so I was thrilled to find a newer copy of my favorite JT story. If you liked this story I especially recommend `Waco's Debt' (not yet re-published) or `Waco's Badge'.
A note for JT Collectors, the titles often change when the stories are republished (`Cow Thieves' to `Running Irons') so if you have older books check newer books for their original titles before buying. Recently re-released `The Road to Ratchet Creek' was previously `Calamity Spells Trouble' and `Texas Killers' is the first(?) part of a two book mini-series originally titled `Benguinage' and `Benguinage is Dead' then re-published as `The Texas Assassin' and `The Lone Star Killers'.

I love this book. Not only does it cover the early life of one of my favourite fictional western characters,it also gives the reader a factual glimspe into life among the Comanche Indians. The book is well researched and an easy read. Do you like your heros, dangerous wisecracking, "diamond's in the rough",If so,Loncy will steal your heart. Enjoyed Comanche? Try The Ysabel Kid,Sidewinder, and the other 45 books in "The Floating Outfit series.

You might also enjoy "The Sacketts" series by Louis L'Amour.

Many of the titles are in large print or on audio

Not your usual westerns

I grew up reading westerns and have read an extremely diverse collection of writers. But The Floating Outfit stories are my favorites. In most of the westerns, you get a lot of bang bang shoot'em up, but not much more. The Floating Outfit offers you all the elements of life. Even the horses have personalities in these stories. Of course, you still get plenty of the bang bang shoot'em ups, and knife throwing, and roping, and fisticuffs, and ....

If you have any inclination to read a western, get one of these books. Chances are good that the first will hook you and you will be forced to read all of them. You get so involved with these characters that you honestly feel like you know them personally. And you definitely care what happens to them. This series will leave you on pins and needles to get started with the next book in the series....

A good read for a hot afternoon!

As with almost any J. T. Edson book, this one is well worth seeking out on the used market. Although Edson's books used to be for sale all over the United States, for some reason they seem to have vanished. This is a major book about Dusty Fog who has been one of my favorate Edson characters since we've both been about the same age. Edson spent many long, hot Texas afternoons collecting the details for this book, driving miles of Texas' backroads & talking to a lot of cowboys in 'watering holes'. (Including some that hadn't changed in over 100 years. If you can get your hands on a copy of 'JT's Ladies' you really have something.

go Calamity!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-18
This is one of my favoutite JT girl hero books. Calamity is doing what she loves in the untamed west with some great hunky heros to help her and another fiesty lady out. JT writes a neat script of an untamed no laws world of the mid west and keeps most of the nasties at bay. I like to read characters who love life and have fun doing it, although i do tend to skim over the descriptions of rifles, ammunition and pistols! However the descriptions of the people and the places are quite easy for me to visualise! a holiday re-read always!
