David Eddings Books

David Eddings' Belgariad series is one of the masterpieces of modern fantasy literature. I fell in love with his books many years ago, and re-read them to this day. His characters are lifelike and amusing, and written in a very human manner. Every time I read, I feel like I am visiting with old friends. Although Eddings writes conflicts into his story, he writes with an assurance that success will come which parallels the great epics of history. His novels, though not thrilling, are relaxing and enthralling in a more stoic fashion-- you will care about the characters and want to see them succeed.

I would recommend this book to the starting fantasy reader, or the reader of modern fiction who hasn't yet delved into the genre. Eddings' personal style and lovable characters have turned me into a dedicated fantasy reader, and I have not yet found his equal among the other authors I've read.

Eddings' series The Belgariad is one of my all-time favorite reads. It's the classic fantasy good-vs.-evil, coming-of-age, lost-kings-returning, quest-with-companions epic. These are common themes in fantasy, but Eddings' writing is so witty, and his characters so intriguing, that it never gets old. He seems very aware he is using some well established cliches, but puts new twists on them and even makes fun of them as the story goes on. I especially love Eddings' twist on the concept of prophesy: In this story, the prophesy is actually sentient, and does not hesitate to tell our hero, Garion, when he is being an idiot.
This series is funny, entertaining, engrossing, and complex. It was my introduction to the sword and sorcery genre of fantasy, and I absolutely love it.

I recomend all of david eddings books to any reader of any age.
David eddings is my idle in a short way of putting it... he has brought a new light to me and my writing since i was a child... His books have a certian amount of amusement in them. Yet the characters are all lovable. This is a book that i promise all will remember and read again... I love all of his books. his philosiphy is simple to understand, yet the writing syle is one that i still have not seen in any other books. He allows a certian amount of ammusement into them, yet keeping them serious. His books are like a good movie that you dont want to end. After reading one of them you want more and more. until you have devoured the very sould of his writing.

To put it short i dont know why i like them there just fun loving and honest to god books.

I have never came across a set of books that is so moving,very few authors have made me as emitional as this athor has with this set.I hope their will be a follow up,it would be nice to see how everything whent after all was said and done,peace doesn't last for ever. Highly recomened,own the full set,have read them so much I can almost tell the story myself.

This is, I believe, Eddings' first real foray into the realm of true Fantasy, and it doesn't disappoint. Eddings does well to develop characters over time and doesn't sacrifice depth for brevity. I've always enjoyed the sense of humor he brings to his works and the repartee that develops between the characters.

If you are looking for a great starter series in the fantasy genre or a more developed work, look no further. Those looking for the complexity and seriousness of high-fantasy should stick with Tolkien and Donaldson.

This was one of my favorite starting fantasy series, and continues to entertain after all these years.

I have been a reader of Fantasy Fiction for most of my life but David Eddings is the best. You have to marvel at the level of detail in these novels. The Belgariad was very entertaining as was the Mallorean (You had to love 'Zakath and Hettar) but Eddings grew up in the Elenium and the Tamuli. The characters were more mature and so was the storyline. I was particularly entertained by the church politics. Eddings draws you in to his stories and you literally can't put them down until you've read the last word of the last novel. We await the story of Danae and Talen.

After 3 weeks with no sleep, food or social life I have finished The Elenium, The Tamuli, The Belgariad, The Mallorean, Belgarath and Polgara, The Rivan Codex and High Hunt! Just The losers to go! It was one amazing ride! You get completely taken up with the characters. I've fallen in love with Berit, hated Asharak, cried about Toth and been completely envious of a man who can write such an amazingly detailed set of works! How does he do it? These novels might not change your life but they'll make you laugh, cry, hate and love. I can't wait to do the experience again! There have got to be some more Elenium novels! If you want to read simply to get to the finish line---Eddings is not for you.

My brother (who loves reading books) suggested I give this to a friend's teenage daughter who's into Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, etc. I bought her Vol 1-2, and the sequel after that. And she loved it!

Eddings writes mindless drivel, but it is ENTERTAINING mindless drivel - great for telling the world to go soak its head and just sitting back and having a good time.

Along with The Belgariad, the Malloreaon is probably my most beloved series of fantasy. I read all the books in the series over 10 years ago & to this day when I just need to escape, I find myself in this world. What David Eddings has crafted is every bit as beautiful as the Tolkien world, as magical as Harry Potter, and as rich as Anne Rice's history in the Vampire Chronicles. The characters are faceted & complex, the story line flows easily & I feel that I am a lucky reader to have found such a magical world!

I've read alot of fantasy books from all kinds of authors. High fantasy and Epics and light fantasy. Usually in a series, the first 3 books are the best and if there are any after that they decline. I started out reading the Belgaraid knowing that this series was "light fantasy" and I didn't expect anything more than that. Then I get to the Mallorean and not only did it surprised me but it was actually better than the Belgaraid. Even the 3rd book in the Mallorean was better than the first. It seems that the author got better as he wrote and had a story to tell instead of stretching out a shorter story just to sell more books.

I read it 20 years ago and I think I enjoyed it more this time.

While Eddings Books are not Shakespeare, Hemmingway, Faulkner or Tolkien they are enjoyable reading and a lot of fun. You will find yourself engrossed in his world. There is a lot of humor and from time to time you will find yourself chuckling out loud.

This is a wonderful book to read. You should read the first 8 books in this series to completely understand it. Once you starting reading these books you just can't stop.

Ce premier volet de cette grande saga présente les principaux personnages : Garion, Polgara la sorcière, Durnik, Barak, Silk, Belgarath le sorcier et j'en passe. On y trouve relatée l'enfance de Garion et l'auteur y jette les bases d'une histoire de sorcellerie, de Dieux et de constante lutte entre le bien et le mal. David Eddings nous familiarise avec ses nombreux personnages et avec l'univers fantastique qu'il a créé avec l'aide de sa femme, Leigh. Il réussi à nous ammener en douceur à comprendre la tâche immense qui incombe à nos héros, soit retrouver l'Orbe d'Aldur. Bien que les personnages soient quelque peu stéréotypés (surtout les personnages féminins), ils sont si attachant et bien présentés qu'on leur pardonne facilement leurs défauts et on prend part sans même s'en appercevoir à leur fabuleuse aventure.

When Garion's sun is kidnapped by the child of dark, he must journey around the world searching for him. Garion and his companions travel to the palace of Rak Urga. Unknowingly they are in the midst of a sacrifice for Torak, the dark god. Errand realizes this begins to put an end to it all. If this seems interesting to you read the rest of "The Malloreon" series. I would highly recommend this book to teens that love sci-fi/ fantasy books.

The first reason I would recommend this book is because of its interesting names. For example, the king of Riva, the Windy Isle, is Garion, wielder of Aldur's Orb. Another example is that the Murgo's kingdom is called Rak Urga. One last example are the names of the children of light and dark, Errand is Light and Zandramas is Dark.

The second reason I would recommend this book is because of it's not only based on humans and gods. Such as, there are different races like the Murgos and Nyissans, or snake tribe. Another example is that one race can only live in the dark because the sun hurts their eyes. The last example is that each race has its advantages, like the Nyissans can smell thoughts and sense treachery even though they are blind.

The third reason I would recommend this novel is due to the fact that it has all the same characters from the other series by David Eddings. Like Belgarath from "The Belgariad" And Polgara is from "The Tamuli." Not all characters have been seen before, like Errand and Usa are new characters that are introduced.

I believe that all teenagers that enjoy reading this book for its on the edge storyline. King of the Murgos is a wonderful book that will keep you awake at 3:00 A.M. with its battles, chases, and more. If you liked this book then make sure to read more books by David Eddings.

Backstory the elder.


In a similar fashion to the Polgara the Sorceress volume, here we get the backstory of ubersorcerer Belgarath, and learn why he is so.

It all has to do with good gods and bad goods and the disciples of such, along with whacky sorcerer-name prefixes.

Old is certainly the word for this bloke, and it gives you more of an overview of what is going on. Again, basically better than the main series.

I love it when the series is all done, and I can burn through it without having to wait for the next book to be written. This was a very good book.

I loved this book. I've read all of the Belgariad and the Mallorean books and never get tired of re-reading any of them.

I love this book. This is my second copy. I have re-bought all of the Eddings series as they have worn out over the years.

I am really surprised at how well rated this book is on Amazon. I read it and think it may well be my last Eddings book. I did like the Belgariad and Silk may be one of my favorite literary characters. BUT, I did get tired of the humor and over all tone of the books. The humor isn't very original (jokes about wives that you've heard a million times) and is repeated again and again. Seriously, how many times can some talk about turning someone in to a turnip? Having said that, I would recommend the Belgariad series as a good read but would stop there. This book feels like a rehash of the Belgariad series and I just don't think it is dark enough. Don't get me wrong, I don't want a horror story, but it seems more like a TV show where there are lots of explosions and people are thrown in the air, but they then land on bushes or bails of hay. There just needs to be some grit in the stories and after the first series, I just can't take the "cuteness" anymore. I would read something else........

I was lucky enough to read Eddings after only a few Dragonlance productions in the 80s. Reading Eddings is like watching The Godfather -- there are books that entertain, just like there are movies, but some are just at a different level. I enjoyed watching Armageddon (I admit it), but it will never be A Beautiful Mind. I was entertained with Brooks and other Forgotten Realms fare (not saying Brooks is at that level -- but I really did like Drizzt Do'Urden the black elf character by Salvatore), but there is something immediately different with Eddings. His story is fresh and moves nicely. The characters are imperfect and lovable. I recommend this series to fans of fantasy and who appreciate a higher level of writing than most fantasy offerings.

I am totally boggled by the number of comparisons people are making of this series to the Lord of the Rings. To me that's tantamount to comparing a child's Tinker Toy construction to the Brooklyn Bridge. This series is not bad per se, other than the cliches that are rampant. Eddings takes a word (for example, "blandly") or a conversation style ("I liked that" "I thought you might") and uses them repeatedly. The story itself has an interesting premise. The delivery is too fluffy and predictable. I wouldn't recommend this series to anyone over 12.

One to read over and over, make sure you also read the Belgariad Part 2 and the Mallorean series to see what happens to Garion on his journey.

It is strange because what is compelling about The Belgariad is also what weakens it. It can't help but remind the fantasy reader of Tolkien & Lord of the Rings. However in doing so one is reminded of the superior writing and storytelling of those novels. David Eddings has good ideas, and a solid central story here. The problem is in the inconsistent delivery. Some of the chapters flow wonderfully, and then yet others are so mindbogglingly juvenile.
That is a major problem with this novel. It can't decide whether it is for the adult reader or for a pre-teen reader. THere are parts of this novel that are near brilliant, and then others such as the entire The Rivan Queen segment that are near horrible. Sometimes he crafts things wonderfully, and still there are other times when he sums up plot points impatiently (even dialogue). In the Rivan Queen Segment he summed up a rather important piece of dialogue after two sentences. He simply closed the quotations and basically said And then she spoke some more and it was an awe inspiring speech. I can't believe that his editor let him get away with that. It was laughable. Now with that said there was enough good momentum to keep the reader interested all the way to the end. It's not as gripping as LOTR, or ASOIAF but it's definitely a pretty good fantasy read.

While it's true the Eddings' characters and story lacks the depth and complexity of truly epic fantasy like Martin or early Jordan, his stories are truly fun to read. I'd espescially reccomend this series to slightly younger readers who are relatively new to the fantasy genre. If you are looking for a deep, complex, psychologically and mentally challenging series, look elsewhere (maybe try the Chronicals of Thomas Covenant), but if you just want to sit back, relax, and read a fun fantasy series, this is the one.

Magic boy takes control.


With grumpy old wizard Belgarath and daughter out of action due to overindulgence in magic keeping everyone in one piece, it is up to Gation to be head mojo maker.

Not only that, but this farm boy seems to have grown up to be a sorcerer and a king (don't injure your eyes rolling them, here).

The whole king thing is maybe not so cool when you find out you have to fight a god, even with a princess with the hots for you and the army she has put together.

I purchased these tapes for my son who can not read very quickly. The other four of my teenager/young adult kids had read the books and really liked them.

As much as I hate to do it, I have to compare this book to Eragon's sequel Eldest by Christopher Paolini. However, Castle of Wizardry to me is what young CP should have aspired to do with his title character (Eragon). Eddings is masterful at creating challenges that advance as the lead character matures. In my opinion this is the finest of the series thus far.

I also recommend Jason Rider's Tucker O'Doyle series.

Eddings gets better and better as we follow the journey of young Garion toward his battle with Torak. In "Castle or Wizardry" our young hero reaches the end of the quest for the Orb of Aldur only to discover his greatest challenge lies ahead. He will be put in a position so far beyond his humble beginnings that his mind will reel. In the meantime the company of heroes we've followed through the first three books face very different challenges in the days leading to war with the powers of the East. The most daunting task is set for Ce'Nedra in a twist you may not see coming. Mysteries are revealed and new adventures begun. This is a great addition to an epic that will remain a favorite for a long time to come.
