When most people hear the name of author Lois Duncan, they think of her 48 best-selling novels or her most famous one, "I Know What You Did Last Summer," not a beautiful book of poetry. "Seasons of the Heart" came about when this award-winning novelist was approached over and over again about writing her autobiography. She realized that she had a collection of poems that she started writing at the age of 10 that chronicled her life and this book is that collection of poems.
"Seasons of the Heart" is broken down into seasons of Lois Duncan's life. Springtime is the beginning of her life through the school years. Her collection of poems began at the age of 10 and I was amazed at the quality of her writing at such a young age. She must have been an English teacher's dream. The poems expressed the joy of discovery and frustrations of being a teenager.
Summer was about Duncan's early adulthood. This included her marriage at 19, the joy of being a mom, and the heartbreak of divorce when she was 27. She became a single mom to three young children when her husband fell in love with someone else. She left Florida and struck out on her own in New Mexico. After several successful years supporting her kids, she got remarried and had two more children. Her second marriage has been a very happy one. My favorite poem from this group was "the Requiem for a 40th birthday."
Autumn was a good time for Duncan. Her career took off, she graduated from college at 43 and she enjoyed watching her family grow up. The poems from this time period poked fun at the aging process - "Ode to my teeth."
Winter was a heartbreaking for Duncan because her youngest child was murdered shortly after high school graduation in 1989. Frustrated by the police dropping the investigation, she published her best seller "Who Killed My Daughter." After receiving several death threats, she relocated to Florida to her roots. She and her husband Don created a Real Crimes website in 2002 to help families keep police cases alive. She keeps hoping that her daughter's crime will be solved. Her poems - "the glasses" and "the first Christmas without her," will bring tears to your eyes.
The book ends with poems from a second spring. The poems from this era reflect her enjoyment at being a grandmother. The poems are written for her grandchildren and often include lessons about bad habits.
Overall, I found "Seasons of the Heart" to be a beautifully-written book with a wonderful approach to an autobiography. All audiences would enjoy it, from teenagers to poetry fans, and especially Lois Duncan fans (that would include almost everybody!).

This is one of my favorites by Duncan. I am amazed how she drags up good ol' Souther hoodoo in all its fluffy/horrific goodness to put in with another very understandable teenager to make a great story. Ah, this is but the magic of Lois Duncan! Here she has an incredible, descriptive Southern setting, and the fun, marvelous characters well love. Honestly, I could not guess what was about to happen in this story, and I was delighted when I realized where she was taking everything. The plot is intricate and fascinating, and Duncan knows how to keep up the pace and the character development to keep this a great roller coaster.

This was an awesome story. In it, a girl named Nore is the main character and she has trouble adjusting to life on Shadow Grove, which is the place she is to move. Her father has just gotten remarried to a remarkably beautiful woman named Lisette (not leslie, people!) and she also has two kids of her own, a girl - of 13, and a boy - of 17. The boy, Gabe turns out to be quite an attractive young man in the eyes of also 17, Nore. Josie (13 years) is an awkward child, probably because of her certain age - 13. She is dealing with several problems, and has an "empty hopelessness" about her age. Nore and Gabe soon become very close, an example is..."Lets just forget about this "stepbrother" thing. If you have a hometown boyfriend, I do not want to know." As they get closer, Nore likes him even more. This all changes when she finds out, he is not all nice.
He asks her to run away with him (for protection) but then when she declines to the offer, he drowns her, saying "I am terribly sorry." Of course she does think about it, "after they graduate" but this does not work out. This is very unfortunate because I was hoping they would kiss, and their love would bloom, but nay, it is not possible. Nore soon realizes the reasons for Gabe and Josie"s strange behavior and action. Lisette has a terrible secret, that of course, lands Nore and her "love-crazy" father into a whirlwind of trouble. This book also has a lot of beautiful detail, and it is really worth reading. There is also a minor character named Dave, who I think is too perfect to be real, and does not really fit in with the story.
I hate Dave. There, I said it. I love Gabe. Seriously! I just wanted to let you guys know that Gabe does REALLY CARE ABOUT NORE. He was not just pretending, and there is a lot of evidence to this statement. It is not clear that he loves her so much that he would do anything, but it is clear that he did love her. I do not know how, but love branches out in many directions. I hate Dave...
What I hated about the ending was that when Nore confronts Gabe, you could still sense love, but she was completely denying it. If I could alter the end, then I would put the last line of the book as this,
"I loved him Dave, I did. I will never forget Gabe, but that does not mean I will not love again...We have to move on with life."
Children could also like it. I know I would, but nay, I am not the writer, just a humble amateur brainstormer. *SIGH*

Locked in Time by Lois Duncan is mix of mystery, suspense and fantasy. I would only recommend to a very patient reader. The book starts out a little boring and puzzling, but once you get into it, you're hooked with suspense.
The main character is a girl named Nore, whose mother dies in the very beginning of the book. After her mother's death, Nore's father sends her off to boarding school and while she was there, her father meets Lissenett and they decide to get married. In all the excitement, they "forgot" to tell Nore (which is what Lissenett wanted). After about three weeks, her father remembers Nore and sends for her to come and live with him and Lissenett. Nore doesn't know what's going to happen. She gets a strange feeling whenever she sees her new family. They're nice, but when she sees them DEATH flashes through her mind.
The story is told in first person by Nore, which makes you feel like you are really there. As the book reaches the end, you feel Nore's tension and uneasiness until the final conclusion, which is ... (you'll have to read it to find out!).

Nore immediately thinks there is something creepy going on when she returns to a new home from boarding school and meets her recently widowed father's new wife. This woman, Lisette, is beautiful and young and has two perfect teenage children of her own. They are living with Nore's father in a beautiful old mansion in New Orleans, and he seems happy. But Nore still thinks something is wrong.
Lisette is very protective of her children. She sees her son, Gabriel, falling for Nore and immediately tries to keep them apart. She often hushes her daughter, Josie, stopping her from speaking. Nore keeps feeling like she should be noticing something strange, but at first she doesn't catch on. Then she listens carefully to the things her stepfamily is saying. Josie refers to being present at a disaster that took place forty years ago. She and Gabe both talk about time passing them by, and being stuck where they are. Soon Nore begins to suspect that her stepfamily is not aging at all, that they may have found some way to remain youthful forever. Now that she knows, Nore fears that her own life may be in danger. But how will she convince her lovestruck father that something terrifying is going on with his new family?
The characters in this story are really vivid and nicely described. I liked the ending and felt like it fit well with the rest of the story. I found it rather unbelievable, though, that if such a method for staying young existed, more people wouldn't have figured it out and used it.

this book is terrible. i was forced to read it for my freshman english class. it has a slow plotline, poor character development, and just terribly written overall. the ending is stupid and pointless and completely unrealistic. do not put yourself through the aaonizing experience of reading this book. i had never not finished a book, but i was really close to just saying "screw this" and throwing the book in the trash. just go read harry potter instead, or if you want a book with suspence or mystery, read anything by dean koontz like The Taking. just not this.

To me the overall book when I look back on it was pretty good while when I was reading it at first I HATED it! I mean I had to read it and it wasn't HORRIBLE or anything I just didn't enjoy it but the ending was so thrilling and not one ounce predictable (okay maybe a little) and I was so excited my heart was pounding and I was really into the book. So it was worth reading because now I know what a real good book can do to you.

Don't Look Behind You by Lois Duncan is a very good book. It is about a teenage girl and her family struggling in life because someone wants to kill her father, so she has to go into hiding with her family. The main characters in this story would be April Corrigan and her family. This story takes place on any other day in Norwood, Virginia. This book was a very good example of a scary story. It really will send shivers up your spine! If you like scary books then you should definitely read Don't Look Behind You by Lois Duncan.

The first time I read this book I was not only tense; I was angry and a little disappointed. I wanted to shake people like George Corrigan, April's weak father and Max, his childhood friend, the FBI agent who talks George into working for him. His comment "I can usually talk George into anything" and George's explanation to April for his actions illustrate the control that a stronger person has over a weaker one. I understand George's actions after his character is revealed, but I still couldn't help saying to myself "What a stupid man!" It is obvious where April gets her naive streak from! As for Max, you would think he'd treat his childhood friend better. I wondered if his attitude is typical of FBI agents.
This book provokes many emotions besides tension and anger, however. There is excitement when a hitman tries to get at them in their hotel room and then later at the house in Florida. And there is sorrow when April reflects on her past life in Norwood with Steve, longing to go back, hence the book's title. The entire family, except for Bram, suffers from what I call Lot's Wife Syndrome. They are constantly "looking behind them" at what they had and becoming pillars of salt. It is only when this stops that they move forward to a somewhat satisfactory conclusion. A great effort by Lois Duncan, it made me sympathize with people who are in this situation.

I did not get this book at all. I found it rather self-indulgent of wannabe writers; maybe I am just too old and cynical to appreciate youthful passion. To be fair, it was an interesting concept, setting the characters in a hospice, and I'm sure Mr. Pike could have done a fine job expressing more feelings of sorrow at the brevity of life instead of lingering on the exciting-but-forgetful stories.

Thought it was a pretty good book but I thought the ending wasnt very well written. It seems like she had some trouble but after that she acted as if it didnt happen. I dont really like how she isnt with jeff, like how it always happen in Duncan's books. when I was almost done with it, I thought how can she go back to her body? I was thinking was this going to be a good ending? or not? I also thought why would she write a story about it? so she has it off her chest? I didnt think it was one of her best books.

Duncan was one of the authors that always managed to terrify me when I was a teenager. This is a deliciously scary story about a place that should freak out anyone--school. Almost "Suspira" in its way, we get an all-too proper setting that is all the more terrifying for it. Great concept, great plot, and genuinally scary.

When I bought Down a Dark Hall I knew it was going to be interesting. Louis Duncan is one of my favorite authors. Durring Down a Dark Hall a 14 year-old girl named Kit is chosen to go to the private school Blackwood School for Girls. Durring her time at Blackwood some unusual things happen to her and the few other girls that are there. Kit runs into some problems while being at this school, some of which she doesn't know what to do about. Ever since Kit has been at the school she has had a weird feeling about it. She's not sure what it is but she does know that it isn't good. The biggest problem at the school is when she is sleeping. Soon she becomes too scared to sleep but she has no choice but to fall asleep. The other girls that are at the schools are having similar problems but none of them want to face Madame Duret the school boards leader. This is a intereting book that combines mystery with common real life problems.

Fourteen-year-old Kit Gordy is sent to an all girls' boarding school while her newly re-married mother and stepfather are on their honeymoon. From the start, she feels uneasy, but her surroundings are gorgeous, the staff seem decent, and the three other girls who are studying there are friendly. However, disturbing things soon begin to happen. She sees figures out of the corner of her eye - are they real or just hallucinations. A picture she was given by one of the girls disappears, even though Kit locks her door. And each of the girls begins to manifest impressive abilities: in poetry writing, painting, piano playing and advanced mathematics respectively. Plus, her letters to her friend and family don't seem to be reaching them. What could be going on?
As the physical and mental health of the girls begins to deteriorate and the school's atmosphere turns more foreboding, Kit becomes determined to unravel the mystery. But the cost is higher than she realizes, and the odds of escaping begin to look impossible.
This was a suspenseful read, although I wish a few things had been cleared up at the end. We aren't told what happens to Kit's companions or the young man who is the son of the headmistress. While they aren't drawn as vividly as Kit herself, the reader will probably be left wondering, too.

This is one of my absolute favorites by Duncan. I read it in high school and was hooked to every word. Goodness, but why can't horror writers for teens write like this anymore?! It is an absolutey fascinating story that is the perfect guilty pleasure or companion for a stormy night. It was everything a good story needs: a bit of Salem Witch Trial history, romance, teen angst, and Duncan's brilliant way of bringing out everyone's psychological moves without dragging down the story. The sheer supernatural flavor of the dreams was a brilliant touch, and Duncan once again combines nervous, self-conscious teenagers with brooding horror.

This is probably the most supsensful book I have ever read, I was always "interested" in what happened with the Salem Witch Trials but never really got around to reading anything about it. This book got me started!! I finished it within two days and decided that for my history project (it was 5 months away) I was going to do it on The Salem Witch Trials. Those five months I researched all about them till I almost knew it by heart. I will soon be reading other books involving the Salem Witch Trials : A Break with Charity by Ann Rinaldi and The Sacrifice by Kathleen Benner Duble. I cannot wait to start reading Lois Duncan's other suspense novels!! Please read this!! Trust me it WON't waist your time.

The book was ok. It wasn't the best though. It was kind of boring.
Sarah and her mother have moved to Pine Crest. Her mother's boyfriend has a daughter who Sarah doesn't really like. Sarah is a fortuneteller in the Halloween Festival and actually sees something in the glass paperweight. Then what she sees really happens! She gets totally creped out. Eric thinks it would be cool to open a fortunetelling booth to make a little money. Soon people start to think that she's a witch. First she finds a picture of a gallows. Then she finds a dead crow! In her locker! Is she really a witch? What will happen to her?
The type of person who would like this book is someone who is interested in witch hunting. That is mainly all they talk about nearer to the end of the book.

This story starts with an unusual paperweight that an old woman bought at a shop. She looked into it and when she died she had all of her affairs in order. Now it falls into the hands of her granddaughter, Sarah. Sarah saw a reflection of a yellow dress in her mothers mirror before she bought it. She saw Charlie fall down the stairs before it happend. Is Sarah a witch? Or is she just losing her mind? A great read, and 110% recommened!

This is one of my favorites of Duncan's. I have each and every one, and I have to say 'The Third Eye', 'Down a Dark Hall', 'Don't Look Behind You', and 'Locked in Time' are my favorite of her's. 'Who Killed my Daughter' is well writen and a true story, but I'm glad Duncan doesn't write such serious books regularly. 'The Third Eye' is one that I keep coming back to, over and over. For some reason, Duncan's writing keeps me fasinated. I have memorised the book entierly, it's so well writen.

When she fnds the other missing kid she is put to the case trying to find ten babies that where kidnapped from the daycare center where she worked.
This story ends happy and I recommed it to anyone who likes books with adventure, thrill, suspense, and a little love twist. I give this book five stars becuse I thought it was the best book in the world. So go out your local library or bookstore and check this book out!!

Say what you want about teen books. Say what you want about psychics... Put them together, add a lot of mystery, a spoonful of kids, and a dash of romance and you get this book. I read this book when I was in the 5th grade, and still 7 years later, love this book.

Let me tell you about a fantastic writer you're probably not reading. If you're a librarian or a high school teacher, then I know you're familiar with her. She's been nominated for hundreds of awards for Young Adult fiction, including the Margaret A. Edwards Award for a Distinguished Body of Work for Young Adults, from the American Library Association and the School Library Journal. Unfortunately, those accolades are not something most of us hear about. The books that get the big press are often those adapted for TV or film. As many parents, grandparents, teachers and teens themselves will tell you, Young Adult fiction has lately become an exciting and bewildering mix of Manga, dragons, young wizards, unfortunate orphans and catchy series.
All the while, Lois Duncan keeps publishing great stories. They're not as flashy as Eragon or Harry Potter, but they often incorporate the supernatural. Duncan's writing has a lot more substance than the Goosebumps or Animorphs series, but her books will more than meet the quota for chills or thrills. Many kids who like to read end up with a reading level that is several school-grade levels above their age experience or emotional development, and are left with few books that will really satisfy them. My dad frowned as I began taking Mom's Stephen King books off the shelf in third grade. Then, the summer I turned eleven, I was lucky to discover an entire shelf of Lois Duncan books at the Green Free Library. I'm sure my parents were relieved.
Since the 1970's, Lois Duncan has been turning out thrillers that fit the bill for younger readers craving suspense, a little spookiness, and sympathetic characters. Every few years, the publishers change the covers, giving them something more stylish to wear so they can catch the eye of the latest generation of teens. But I'd recommend Duncan to any mystery fan, no matter how many years-young. Her books accomplish what so many other books of the same genre only promise. Look on the covers of any contemporary thriller or mystery and you'll find critics raving about "taut prose" with "engaging, plausible characters" and a "fast-paced, page-turning plot". Duncan delivers all this and more. There's no need to figure out which one to read first, and there's not much difficulty figuring out if you've already read it, which happens to most of us with our favorite mystery authors. Duncan's books are not part of a series, nor are they formulaic.
If you need a place to start, my personal favorites are "Down a Dark Hall" and "The Third Eye". Both of these stories have a high school girl as their central character, and both of these girls have a psychic ability that neither realized she had. In "The Third Eye", Karen decides to help local police find kidnapped children and finds herself quickly ensnared in dangerous case involving "serial" kidnappers who strike nursery schools. The chapters reveal one surprise after another about Karen's family, her current boyfriend and her future. "Down A Dark Hall", on the other hand, does not appear to have anything supernatural about it - at first. Kit has been selected to be one of only four students at a private boarding school whose atmosphere is creepier than she'd like, but otherwise seems fairly normal. The reason she and the other girls are selected, though, is anything but educational. This story, too, eventually reveals things to Kit, not just about the school and the few other people there, but also about memories she couldn't quite figure out.
Picking up one of these books the other day, I thought I'd glance over it and ended up re-reading the whole thing. People who love to read often joke that once they start a book, the rest of the world goes away - or they wish it would. With Duncan's stories, that's not an idle joke or wish: it's a guarantee.

Do you believe in witches? Well, Lois Duncan's story may just make you a believer if you're not. This little saga has one of the creepiest female villains in teen literature by the name of Julia, but is Julia REALLY a witch? I don't want to give too much of this spooktacular funfest away, but I will tell you that I felt for Rachel and her dog Trickle because nobody else believed them except us readers. Watch Rachel lose everything and get most of it back in this great teen thriller that's sure to give you the creeps and also cheer on one brave and determined young girl who will stop at nothing to uncover the truth. One of my favorite teen books thus far, and a responsibly good one for young readers who like their stories just a bit on the dark side.

I thought this book was a good read but not up to full potentiol.
the take on witches was absolutly stunning or maybe a better word would just be amazing. I thought it was just so interesting what she made the witch do and how the people in the book handled it because it seemed like that's how people would handle things in real life. How it turns out is alright and I thought it was an overall good book with a good plot and setting.
My only complaint (and it seems to act as a big one) is that I never really could get into the charactors. this book is based around the charactors problems and minds and yadda yadda... you kind of need to tell how they act and how they think to get it and i didn't really end up learning much about the charactors.
If i would have known things about ,say, Rachels best friend and almost boyfriend then i would have known how he normally acts leading to a better story. That's just one example.
It is a great book though and i think many people would enjoy it if they are in the ages of 12-16 but, maybe it would be a little boring for anyone older.

I enjoyed this book. It has a little of everything: thrilling parts, emotional parts, supernatural stuff, and romance.
A girl, Rachel, has to live through a summer where her couisn, Julia, has to stay with Rachel and her family. Julia's parents died in a car wreck. But Julia's weird. She takes over Rachel's best friend, her boyfriend, and her clothes. She goes to the dance that Rachel was supposed to go to but couldn't because she had hives. Julia goes to the dance in the dress that Rachel made herself for herself. Rachel's dog bit Julia once, and Julia she yelled at the dog. Next thing that happened is Rachel's dog is sick. Rachel eventually thinks that Julia is a witch.
I thought this book was good. It's very creepy and gives you chills.

After reading Gallows Hill by Lois Duncan I decided to buy all of her supsense novels just because it was so good. Well...I hadn't read any of them but for some reason I was like I'll buy Who Killed My Daughter? and I just have to say WOW!!...I'm a Christian so some of the things in this book really made me think; and I really feel like contacting this author because she also explained her faith a tad bit in the book also. This book is heart-breaking but also very inspirational. I also looked forward to reading this because my sister's friend died in a car accident three years ago and her mother has also written a novel, filled with interviews of her daughter's friends (my sister is in the book). However, I do not know what the title of this book, the last name of the author, or when this book is due to release but it is in the publication process. Overall, read this book.

After reading the book and as a retired P.I. of 30 years I've come to my own conclusions pertaining to this murder. Based on ONLY the evidences and personal experiences in this matter, following are the possibilities:
1. She was pregnant with the child of her Vietnamese boyfriend or gang-raped by the Vietnamese gang. Lois Duncan or her husband's own prejudice simply cannot allow the child to be born. So either one or both of them planned the demise of their daughter.
2. She had an affair with a police officer(possibily during one of the frat parties). How many parents know everything of their son or daugher's personal life? How many of you told your parents everything in your personal life? That officer wanted her to leave her boyfriend, but she refused. Officer was mostly likely a white male between age of 23 and 35. The fact that she ultimately chose a Vietnamese over him is too much to handle.
3. She was prostituting herself on the highway, and it was simply a business transaction gone wrong.
Above are my personal opinions reguarding cases like this. Since I did not personally interview any of the parties involved, I can only reach these general conclusions.

I feel bad for the mother and the story itself is very interesting, but its dependence on ham-handed psychic readings was a pretty big turn off. I admire the mother's chutzpah but her investigative techniques are far cry from those displayed in Graysmith's far superior Zodiac.

This is one of the best non fiction books I have ever read. It is a real tear jerker. I would definately recommend it if you love a good mystery book. Also,I definately disagree with the well written but meaningless review comment. It is not meaningless and the facts are real. I am 13 and I would definately allow my child to read it if I were older. It is a good book.

Who Killed My Daughter? is one of the best books I have ever read. The title itself just caught my eye one day and I immediatley knew that I had to read this book. It is so powerful. I can't imagine the horror and frustration Lois Duncan went through while searching for her daughter's killer. It was even harder for her when the police refused to follow up on important information. She then received help from psychics and a journalist. It was an incredible journey for her filled with sadness, anger, tears, suspense, and shock. I recommend this book to all young adults and adults. Everyone must read this. Knowing that this is actually a true story adds to the horror and suspense. It gives us an insight on the life of Lois Duncan, her daughter, and the rest of her family, as well as important information. This is a must-read book.
