The slow train

This is one of the many books that seeks to cash in on the popularity of Sherlock Homes by another author weaving a tale using one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyles' ancillary characters. It is a tries very hard to be period but is at times rather a plodding tale - the problems of booking a train ticket and whether the timetables are well organised is not scintillating reading. However there are murders, some suspense, and plenty of period detail for the enthusiast of this genre. This story uses the character of Sherlock Homes' genius brother, Mycroft Holmes, as the agent of investigation as told by his amanuensis. The story is of a plot to assassinate a Swedish nobleman and much of the action takes place on a train (a scenario rather better exploited by Agatha Christie and Graham Greene)- the train being the eponymous Flying Scotsman; there is not much genius demonstrated by Mycroft - in fact he seems at the mercy of events. The story does use some characters and organisations from a previous book of Fawcett's but it is possible to read this novel quite well without the knowledge from previous books. There is some romantic interest towards the end of the novel and this does make the story a little more amusing in the latter half. It is not as good as a Conan Doyle tale and, for a Sherlock Holmes spin-off, I preferred the Professor Moraity books of Michael Kurland.

It's okay, but liberties were taken with the Sherlock Holmes tale

I bought this mainly for the Sherlock Holmes story. It's a comic book version of "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle". But you'll find some glaring changes from the original story written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. They changed the title to "The Mystery of the Blue Diamond". I guess they figured kids reading this wouldn't know what a carbuncle is. Or that kids wouldn't want to stop and look up the word in a dictionary. And they changed the name of Dr. John Watson to Dr. CHARLES Watson. What's up with that? Is it too much to ask to keep the characters' original names? And in the original story Holmes doesn't use one of his many disguises while solving this mystery. But in this comic book they have him disguised as a woman.

The artwork is okay, and it is colorful. I'd rate it three stars out of five.

Great story, bizarre reading

Checking out audio versions of Sherlock Holmes stories from the library is as close as you can get to a sure thing, since Arthur Conan Doyle's writing is generally superb even in the lesser tales, and the interplay between Watson and Holmes tends to be more entertaining in audio format. I therefore pounced on this unabridged recording of Hound of the Baskervilles read by David Case when I saw it at the local library.

Readers familiar with the Holmes canon are probably familiar with the story, as Holmes is hired to investigate the recent death of his client's uncle at Baskerville Hall, a gloomy old manor on the edge of the moor allegedly haunted by a vicious beast. The very first chapter sets a wonderful tone for the rest of the lengthy story, as Holmes and Watson use logic and a handful of clues to guess the age and employment of a visitor solely by examining the visitor's walking cane, left by accident at Holmes' flat on Baker Street while our hero was away.

The mystery at Baskerville Hall is an effective one, putting Holmes and Watson in the path of sneaky butlers, dangerous fugitives and con artists, while being watched and pursued themselves.

Although the story is very well-written, I was somewhat taken aback by the strange reading by David Case. His British accents for the characters seemed almost intentionally overblown, as if this whole reading was a Monty Python sketch about haughty British windbags. To his credit he does make each character's voice sound different. For some of the characters, Case resorts to a voice so bizarre it sounded as if he was speaking while inhaling. There is certainly some comic relief to this presentation, and after awhile you forget about the narrative foibles and get wrapped up in the story. I give the recording a lukewarm three stars.

Researching the Locations of those Stories

Review Date: 2004-02-13
This book describes London as it existed during the late 19th century, when the Sherlock Holmes stories were written. Since fiction is based on facts, Harrison sought to find the real locations described in the stories. He also compared the stories to some of the scandals and crimes of that era. The names of places were usually changed into fictional places. The old towns of England are often separated by 7 to 9 miles (an hour by horse), the villages by 2.5 to 3 miles (an hour's walk). Harrison explains the reasoning for picking particular sites. "When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth."

Why was London dependent on horse-drawn vehicles? The railway investors limited automobiles (steam-driven) to prevent ruinous competition (p.48). 1879 saw electric light bulbs in use. London consumed a large amount of porter, which had double the alcohol and a higher infusion of hops - a narcotic (p.50). The insufficient drainage created mud from horse-droppings whenever it rained. Fresh air was mostly found in the country.

Baker Street was originally developed as high-class residential; it had changed to upper middle-class residential and commercial by 1881 when inhabited by Holmes & Watson. It was close to rail and bus routes (pp.82-83). Many of London's suburbs had their origins in villages built by wells (p.121). Their houses were built along existing transportation routes, avoiding the hilly parts before electrified trolleys. The "Bobby" patrolled upper-class neighborhoods, leaving the middle-class to deal with the "roughs" (p.131). A "decent" person wasn't safe outside their own territory. A person's dress proclaimed their social rank. Walking sticks, weighted with lead, were often used as weapons to fend off attacks. A lady could hire a porter to carry a bag and be assured of protection in the street.

Sherlock Holmes' restlessness, working without sleep or rest, changes of mode, and collapsing into somnolence are all signs of cocaine use (p.155). This and other chemicals could be as easily purchased as aspirin today. Harrison identifies the location of "Stoke Moran" (p.159). He does not offer a diagnosis for the "mad violence" of Roylott's temper (p.163). Could it be a brain disease?

As a background to "The Naval Treaty" Harrison discusses the 1878 Congress of Berlin, which avoided a general European war by agreeing to "the spheres of influence" which divided up the world that was not already colonized. Page 206 discusses the alliances of that time which were a forerunner to the Great War. Writing in the 1950s, Harrison describes the places that were little changed from the 1890s. Page 7 shows the older fashion for writing the digit '8' (like a capital 'S').
