This edition contains `The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' short stories and the novel `The Hound of the Baskervilles'. I actually stole this book from my High School library but I didn't want to read it until I had read the stories which preceded. Since I've already commented on `Adventures' in another review I'll stick to discussing `Hound'.

Written after Conan-Doyle's `Final Problem' short story about Holmes' `death' this book takes place before his confrontation with Moriarty at the Reichenbach Falls. Doctor Mortimer from Dartmoor comes to visit Holmes with the story of a beastly hound which has killed Charles Baskerville and will more than likely come after his heir Sir Henry.

Holmes promptly sends Watson off to Dartmoor to guard Sir Henry and report back with all developments. This is the point where Holmes disappears for almost half of the book. But he returns near the end to explain the mystery to all involved.

While it is better than Conan-Doyle's short stories in terms of a stronger narrative and a larger mystery `Hound of the Baskervilles' still suffers from long, ludicrous and unrealistic monologues and superficial contrivances. As always the story is told from the point of view of Watson. But it simply isn't a unique enough point of view to make the first person narrative worth it. I can honestly say that if the story was told in the 3rd person perspective it would make hardly any difference.

I cannot for the life of me work out how this book is sometimes regarded as a horror. Nothing in it scared me at all. The hound doesn't even show up until the end. And even then Conan-Doyle's description doesn't paint a very vivid picture in your head.

There just isn't enough intrigue or reason to keep turning the pages. The human and reality-based side of the story comes thru too strongly to allow any sort of fantastical creativity. As a classic it's a disappointment but compared to the short stories it's definitely better than the norm.

What this collection of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's best science fiction reveals is that he was a heck of a mystery writer... science fiction writer? Not so much. Frankly very few of these stories truly meet even the looser 19th Century standard of what is SF. George E. Slusser admits as much in the first sentence of his introduction... then spends 13 pages trying to walk this admission back.

Only the surprise ending of "The American's Tale" (1879) brings any "science" into its fiction and that of the ludicrous man-eating plant variety.

"The Los Amigos Fiasco" (1892) is a comic tale about the arrogance of science that is about as "scientific" as the original "Frankenstein".

"The Great Keinplatz Experiment" (1894) is an early tale of body switching, but calling it SF makes about as much sense as calling the alleged method, mesmerism, "science".

"The Adventure of the Devil's Foot" (1897) and "The Adventure of the Creeping Man" (1903) are a couple of Sherlock Holmes mysteries with some pseudoscientific overtones.

"The Terror of Blue John Gap" (1910) is really a horror tale about an ancient monster accidentally unleashed.

"Through the Veil" (1911) is a tale about reincarnation and remembering past lives.

"The Last Galley" (1911) is a historical tale with perhaps some intended warnings for Britain but only "FUTURE war" tales can properly be considered SF.

"The Great Brown-Pericord Motor" (1911) uses the title invention simply to provide a motive for the crime and a clever way to dispose of the body.

Now with "The Horror of the Heights" (1913) the editors are on firmer ground. Though basically a gothic horror tale, there is enough science in the concept of his "air-jungles" to justify the SF classification.

With "Danger!" (1914) there is no question. This classic of "future war" SF that correctly predicted the danger of submarine warfare but utterly missed the military counters to it unquestionably belongs.

But with "The Lift" (1922) we are back to material chosen to fill space. This tale about a maniac sabotaging an elevator is not SF under any possible definition.

The presence of the two Professor Challenger stories that round out the book: "The Disintegration Machine" and "When the World Screamed" are also not in question.

The trouble is that while Sir Arthur obviously wrote a number of things that can legitimately be labeled SF, outside of the Professor Challenger novels and stories they consist entirely of "The Horror of the Heights" and "Danger!" The rest vary from very good to only so-so, but SF they are NOT.

Which Sherlock Holmes stories are "the best?"

According to the Western Publishing Company, they are the following: The Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual; The Man With the Twisted Lip; A Scandal in Bohemia; The Adventure of Silver Blaze; The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter, and; The Adventure of The Final Problem.

It's an interesting selection. Most editors who chose the last story, "The Final Problem," would have also included the very first story, but this editor didn't. It's hard to argue with "A Scandal in Bohemia;" I think any Holmesophile would include that, but other selections are not the ones you would expect.

As a whole, this book is a great read for the casual Holmes reader. A complete collected works book is intimidating, and all of the stories start to run together. Six seems like a good number to me, and all of the tales are definitely from Doyle's better works. Also, there are a handful of illustrations in brown ink, which lend a certain atmosphere to the text that I appreciated.

I recommend this to anyone who has a casual interest in Holmes; it's a great way to experience the greatest fictional detective who ever lived without over-experiencing him.

This is one of the many books that seeks to cash in on the popularity of Sherlock Homes by another author weaving a tale using one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyles' ancillary characters. It is a tries very hard to be period but is at times rather a plodding tale - the problems of booking a train ticket and whether the timetables are well organised is not scintillating reading. However there are murders, some suspense, and plenty of period detail for the enthusiast of this genre. This story uses the character of Sherlock Homes' genius brother, Mycroft Holmes, as the agent of investigation as told by his amanuensis. The story is of a plot to assassinate a Swedish nobleman and much of the action takes place on a train (a scenario rather better exploited by Agatha Christie and Graham Greene)- the train being the eponymous Flying Scotsman; there is not much genius demonstrated by Mycroft - in fact he seems at the mercy of events. The story does use some characters and organisations from a previous book of Fawcett's but it is possible to read this novel quite well without the knowledge from previous books. There is some romantic interest towards the end of the novel and this does make the story a little more amusing in the latter half. It is not as good as a Conan Doyle tale and, for a Sherlock Holmes spin-off, I preferred the Professor Moraity books of Michael Kurland.

I bought this mainly for the Sherlock Holmes story. It's a comic book version of "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle". But you'll find some glaring changes from the original story written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. They changed the title to "The Mystery of the Blue Diamond". I guess they figured kids reading this wouldn't know what a carbuncle is. Or that kids wouldn't want to stop and look up the word in a dictionary. And they changed the name of Dr. John Watson to Dr. CHARLES Watson. What's up with that? Is it too much to ask to keep the characters' original names? And in the original story Holmes doesn't use one of his many disguises while solving this mystery. But in this comic book they have him disguised as a woman.

The artwork is okay, and it is colorful. I'd rate it three stars out of five.
