If you like cuddling up and reading a comfortabele book. This is the one. U will never not be amazed by the famous Sherlock Holmes. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is the series of short stories that made the fortunes of the Strand Magazine, in which they were first publixhed, and won immense popularity for Holmes and Watson.Includes, "The Red-Headed League", "The Blue Carbncle" and my favorite,"The Speckled Band.

Holmes being Holmes

The short story format was just what I needed. I don't have time to churn through page after page, hoping to find a good stopping point. The large print was a pleasure to read. I was able to use my regular reading glasses and not the coke bottle eyeware. Most of the stories were fascinating and nearly impossible to figure out, but I must admit that I nearly outwhitted Holmes a couple of times as situations become predictable. That is my reason for the score of four. But Holmes ability to observe the slightest nuance never failed to fascinate me, and I highly recommend the book.

This collection of Sherlock Holmes stories is great. I use it as my defacto copy of the canon. It has the original Strand Magazine drawings and even has great cover artwork.

My only complaint is that the font is a bit too small.

Victorian social mores under the Great Detective's glass
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-13
This book is an examination of the social mores of Victorian England as revealed through the Sherlock Holmes stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and in particular the twelve stories collected together as The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.

It places the Holmes phenomenon within the context of the development of detective fiction, recognising that they were written fairly early in the period where the hero identification changed from the villains (criminals) to their opponents (police and detectives) which resulted from the entrenchment of the middle classes in the fabric of society due to the relatively fairer sharing of society's resources.

Jann identifies the repression of the lower (working) classes inherent in the stories, where the middle and upper class characters have control over their lives but the lower classes seem almost programmed to follow their base urges and can be easily manipulated by Holmes into betraying their criminal activities. As also noted, women in general, regardless of their class, are similarly unable to move outside easily perceived behaviour. Those who can, like Irene Adler, are given masculine traits and then married off to ciphers.

A number of Victorian scandals and their influence on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's writing are identified.

For those students of Victorian history, or those interested in the Holmesian canon, this book provides insight and views from odd angles. I found it an easy read due to Jann's writing style, which detailed her arguments without bogging me down in verly technical language.

An Amusing Anecdote

Review Date: 2008-06-05
This little story was too short for the price paid; but amusing. A man taking his large family on an outing finds he must sit up on the box with the cabman. The cabman tells him some queer, tall tales about another fare he had taken about London. It's rather more Dickensian than Sherlockian - like a scene from Pickwick Papers, not a real story with a beginning, middle and end. If you collect Doyle, it's a nice addition. If not, you are not missing much.

Pearson's biography of Sir Authur Conan Doyle is a wonderful work that captured the inter working of a man that created one of the best known characters in history. The book follows Doyle from his beginings as a poor doctor to his rise as an author. The book written in 1943 is stright to the point and does not dwell on the leagend that has come from Doyle's work. Pearson shows that by the end Doyle hated Holmes, and felt that he took focus away from his better works. Well Written and short a must read for Holmes fans of all ages.

Six good stories from Sherlock Holmes Author

Review Date: 2004-05-20
