A couple of Isak Dinesen's best stories are here. Babette's Feast ,which is also a wonderful film, centers around a shared meal that brings grace and joy. An artist/cook gives all she has for a feast, two sisters, and her art. Sorrow-Acre resembles a folktale and shows the depths of a mothers love. Colleen Dewhurst does a superb reading.

The Master Storyteller: Isak Dinesen/Karen Blixen

Recently back in print! Here is a collection of eleven Dinesen tales which cannot generally be found elsewhere, but which are discussed in most of the prominent biographies of this author.

This collection was first published in 1977 after Karen Blixen's death in 1962. Blixen's literary executors exercised great care in selecting a beautiful ensemble of archived stories to fully delight and entrance the modern reader.

Bask in the intricate dreamworld Dinesen created in her early tales (juvenilia) of "Uncle Theodore" and "Carnival" plus "The DeCats Family" which is my personal favorite! Or treat yourself to a grownup's bedtime story called "The Ghost Horses" with a lasting bittersweet aroma that will spark even more curious wonders within your own dreamscape.

The final tale in this volume called "The Second Meeting" will also inspire you to create your own tale of what it might be like to have one last unforgettable moment with Isak Dinesen herself!

Yes, everyone... this modest paperback will feel (figuratively anyhow) like some wonderful old gilt-edged storybook bound in fine Moroccan leather. How I wish it were!

The last book of the baroness show that her literary skills were in pristine condition until her last days. In this book, the author will ponder if it is possible to percibe in the glimpse of a second the timelessness of eternal beauty, as well as how can we become a part of something-someone that is not us? Is that the reason why love is a fools game? This questions and several more are placed before the reader while in the surface the tale is just narrating how Herr Cazotte, will try to seduce Ehrengard. Not by having sex with her - that would be to crude and common for an artist like him - rather he will try to show her by means of a portrait, that her inner self was captured by his art in a painting while she was bathing naked in a secluded lake.

Letters sent after Karen Blixen returned from Africa

This amazing, huge volume contains a large number of letters sent from Karen Blixen to friends and family, as well as letters sent from friends and family to her after her return to Denmark from Africa to a life that she tried to make the best of. It touches on many subjects, i.e. her situation during the II World War; her platonic, yet disturbing relationship with a young married Danish author, her grave illness, her trip to the US, her nominations for Nobel, her family and staff, and much more.

The book gives us a fantastic view into her life and a better understanding of who she was and how she came to write some of the best literature ever seen. I highly recommend it to anyone who loved the first set of letters written while she lived in Africa as well as people who have taken an interest in her works.

Only the great Julie Harris could have played Isak Dinesen in a one woman show on Broadway. I have to admit that this play is no easy reading or easy to put on stage unless you have somebody who can play Isak so well. Reading it gives me a better understanding of the play itself and how one person can do it for so long.

Beautiful, lyrical writing. So descriptive that you feel as if you were there. Astonishing in afterthought to realize that Dr. Donelson didn't have one actual line of dialogue - no "he said" "she said," yet it reads as if conversations took place. This is the type of book that will please any reader who likes well developed characters and swiftly moving plot.

As I was browsing through the biography section of a used bookstore, an old wrinkled face with two wise, lively eyes captivated me. In them was something powerfully beautiful and touching - "full of juices of the golden autumn of life" - that, unlike the vacuity of a generic cover photograph, instantly engaged. I have recently finished Isak Dinesen's "Out of Africa" which I truly loved, so I couldn't resist the promise of that gaze.

"Titania" introduces a whole new concept of a biography! It's not a gossipy, tell-it-all collection of juicy episodes carefully tailored to satisfy the reader's basic voyeuristic urge, but a loyal rendering of the gentle texture of Dinesen's life. The identity of Tanne's youthful crush is only revealed at the very end, there are no steamy bits about Denys (in fact, Parmenia Migel, Dinesen's friend, uses Tanne's very technique of powerful understatement). Her illness is but indirectly alluded to, and we only find out the nature of her father's mysterious death halfway into the book. "Titania" not only sheds light on Dinesen's private moments and thoughts, it preserves the spirit of the author and her environment and is populated with many characters who possess true aristocracy of the spirit. You will fall in love with Tania!

This is long overdue, albeit, brief view of a long and lustrous career of a man who never received the accolades in this country that he should have. Many musical luminaries in the world have paid tribute to him, including his friend Miles Davis. This book covers about a 10 year period in his career, mostly in Europe. It details elements of his career and the friends he made while there. There is a section of the book with photographs of many of these frriends and some of his family.. Other members of my family have read the book and found it to be informative and an interesting story of this renowned classical musician who never really attained the kind of fame many of his comtempories received. I recommend it highly if you are looking for an autobiography of a remarkable man and just a small part of his career.
