Originally published in England in 1985, Jon Wynne-Tyson took six years to compile this wonderful, thought-provoking book.
The quotes are listed alphabetically by author, and in the introduction to this anthology, Wynne-Tyson points out the connection between how we treat non-humans and each other:
"Clear minds down the centuries have seen that violence man shows to man is inextricably linked to the violence we have inflicted upon other species and our shared environment", and recent studies on serial killers indicates that this is a fact.

There are many quotes on humanity and compassion towards all living things, and our environment as a whole, as well as specific topics like vivisection and vegetarianism, and they come from great minds like Leonardo Da Vinci, Leo Tolstoy, and Albert Einstein, to name a few. There are four pages of excerpts from the writings of Dr. Catherine Roberts that are remarkable in their insight, and it's a section that should not be missed.

Animal rights is the subject closest and dearest to my heart, as I believe in the equality of all creatures, and appreciate the collected wisdom of this book.

Sometimes, coming up with a clever turn of phrase is harder than picking up a greased watermelon in a swimming pool. That's why I got a copy of this highly entertaining and inspiring book. It's full of interesting, funny and sometimes bizarre similes that always get my brain going like a lawnmower on a downhill slope.

Family promises is a must have

I have had this book for a little while now and it is soo great!! I confess these scriptures over me and my husband everyday. It has made a huge difference in our life. This book gives you promises that you can stand on concerning your family and marriage. If you are worried about your children or your husband cheating on you, you definitely need this book. You can trust that Gods word is true and it will never return to him void but will accomplish what it is sent to do. I used to worry about my husband cheating on me, now I just say the scriptures in this book over my husband and believe that what God says in his word is true!!!!

this is quite an interesting book, as i am fascinated with death. perhaps knowing how one leaves the world makes death more familiar, especially in the case of suicide. read it, books like this are quaint and dainty, as the brits say.

Leaving this earth is not easy, but Oscar Wilde sums it up.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1998-07-04
Although not all the last words are by Oscar Wilde. This book takes you around the world and repeats the sometimes comedic, other times tragic comments made by people as they are in the final stages of life. It is almost surreal to feel the presence of real life hero's, heroines and common folk, as they begin their journey into the unknown. The quotes were made as they were dying. They come short and fast. Sometimes mocking the world, shunning and cursing the executioner, others bitterly regretting the life they have led. Other famous last words are hilarious, sarcastic, cunning, and shameful. All in all you will not have this book far from your side. When you have a couple of minutes to kill you will pick it up and start to read it. When your family and friends discover the book, you will find it is one of the most popular and talked about book favorites, after they have read it. Soon you will start to hear quotes in conversations from people who have read the book. When this happens you realize it was probably one of the best bargains you ever bought.
