This is a wonderful source for quotations, and a fun read. I find myself totally absorbed in these quotations everytime I open this book. I like the way the quotations are arranged, and I like the assortment of sources.
I have not yet had an opportunity to use the CD that comes with it, but I think that is a great idea.

Nulman is a master anthologizer with a deep feel and knowledge for the Jewish Tradition. Here he provides profound sayings from Tannach, from Mishneh, from Gemara, and from subsequent Jewish religious literature.
This book like his book on 'Jewish Prayer' is a kind of encyclopedia-work made especially for 'looking up' and 'looking into.'

A collection of three dozen wise sayings from Native Americans

"Enduring Wisdom: Saying from Native Americans" is a collection of sayings by Sioux author Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve and Cherokee-and-African-American artist Synthia Saint James. As Sneve points out in her Author's Note, there are thousands of "wise" saying attributed to Native Americans, but much of what you will find here was passed down through oral traditions, because Native Americans did not have any written languages until long after white people came to the Americas. Those that were written down, often my missionaries, historians and anthropologists, have been translated and interpreted by those outside of the cultures. The book's End Notes detail the original selections for all of these quotes, so you can see where they came from, although the authors of the quotes and their dates are identified in the book as you go along. The passages come from Native Americans who were among the earliest to make contact with Europeans up to those from contemporary tribal people who value their heritage.
The wise words contained in this book are organized into five categories: Mother Earth, The People, War and Peace, Spirit Life, and Enduring Wisdom. There are almost three dozen quotations, as well as poetic introductions to each section by Sneve. For the most part you will find a balance on these pages between ancient sayings and more contemporary words of wisdom. For example, the 1997 words of Kiowa author N. Scott Momaday on the need to walk the sacred earth are put next to the words of the Maker of heaven and earth repeated by the Ottawa chief Pontiac in 1760. The words of famous Native American leaders including Chief Joseph, Cochise, Red Jacket, and Black Hawk are found here, but they are in the minority compared to the others who are quoted here, from Strung Arm, a Nachez mother in 1729, to Tatewin Means, a Dakota high school student in 1996. So there is an excellent mix of sources here, with the renowned political and spiritual leaders with those of ordinary tribal members.
The artwork by Saint James consists of shapes of color, the sort that young students should be able to imitate, even if they resort to cutting out shapes from construction paper to do it (I thought that was what the art was until I noticed on the cover it says "paintings"). Then again, teachers might want to try something along these lines because the pages of this book would definitely be an inspiration for a classroom bulletin board or poster display. The art work is simply and large enough that a teacher can read from the book and show the paintings to the entire class as well, so there are a lot of ways of using this book for a variety of classroom units.

In fact this may be the first and greatest and most ethical of the small cottage industry of "cute" sound bites of Mr. Wilde taken far out of context and of sometimes dubious source. Mr. Wilde's son provides and excellent preface describing the limitations and dangers of this exercise and a wonderful insight to his amazing father. The editor then sums up his strategy in meeting the challenges to this enterprise, specifically the need to check the veracity of people claiming Mr. Wilde said such and such in conversation (many of these similar books have tepid sayings claimed to have been heard in conversation. Joyce suffered similarly with Frank Budgeon, and of course Mark Twain had EVERYTHING ascribed to him including the weather). They also address the difficulty of taking lines from Mr. Wilde's plays and novel, in which a CHARACTER while IN CHARACTER says a certain thing which some later call a saying of Mr. WIlde. Mr. Wilde in his own voice may have said it differently, but let the character with all their defects faults and characteristics speak such eccentric foolishness as a character development device. THe editor and Mr. Wilde's son wonderfully explore all the pitfalls of this project and then deliver the most perfect and comprehensive collection possible, ever, possibly the motherlode for all the later fashionable and dubious and cutely illustrated and superficial later throwaways.
An excellent collection, substantial and worth keeping for re-reading and reflection. THe most complete of its miserable kind. Please nevertheless read the originals within their intended contexts rather than these naked soundbites, including Mr. Wilde's very insightful body of artistic criticisms.

A truly "essential" writer of our time

The "communication society" in which we live submerges us with raw information in terms of numbers, dates, facts and figures. The net result is that our mind becomes cloged.
More than ever, it is necessary to harmonize information with real knowledge.
Only few writers of our epoch have the gift of combining pure information and pure wisdom. Ananda Coomaraswamy is one of them.
The writings collected by his son, the noted Christian traditional theologian Rama Coomaraswamy, constitute an outstanding instance of how to apply an immense erudition to the service of truth.
This stimulating book demonstrates that Ananda Coomaraswamy is one of the few truly "essential" writers of our time.

If you are a fan of route 66 and of life then this book is a must read. Chuck and Ann Williams have done a beautiful job of tying information about Route 66 - "The Mother Road" and the 66 books of the Bible - "The Father Road" together. The book describes a 22 day trip across Route 66 with all of the stops that Chuck and Ann made. Along the way they add various passages from the Bible - at least one from every book of the Bible(all 66)and tie them in with their trip in a wonderful way. I really enjoyed this book both as a travel log and as a source of inspiration. As I read I felt that I was along for the ride with Chuck and Ann and my faith was strengthed in Jesus, my Lord and Savior as well. It doesn't get much better than that.
