"I ask you to judge me by the enemies I have made."

I quite often read an "Edit Book".By that I mean a book that is not written by a author, but a book which is a collection of stuff that someone gathers together, edits it,then gets it published. At times the editor puts a lot into it,but more often acts as an assembler only.In fact they often seem like they have been assembled by a bunch of staff "researchers" and without any object except to produce a certain number of pages. The first book I wrote an Amazon review was such a book by the same editor.I wrote the review on August 11,2003,gave it only 1 Star, and remain the one and only reviewer. When I started to read this book,I noted that there had been no reviews to date, even though it was published in 2002.Halfway through,I realized it was by the same editor.
Surprisingly,I really liked this book.In a similar way, there could have been any number of quotes chosen;but the Presidents were all included and in order. In that way it is quite a historical endeavor.
A couple of things come out in this book.
First, and for obvious reasons,a book like this shows that the guiding principles of the Presidents have never wavered, despite their personalities or the issues and things they faced.I can't imagine that would be popssible with any other country.
Secondly, the US was a country formed by the people and for the people,a Republic with 3 branches of government. This results in the President being the President of all the people;instead of the leader of a political party. This contrasts with every other country, including mine,Canada. The US gains immensely from this.
Thirdly,as you read the quotes from each president, you will see the same principles emerge;Liberty,Freedom,Equality,Desire for Peace,Willingness to help others,Desire to improve,No desire to dominate others,Government role is to serve the people rather than for the people to serve the government.
I think it is too bad that there were not comments included on the dust jacket by others.Instead, the easy way out was taken and lines from the Presidents were used.

A business book that is (finally) sensible!

In today's' business world, guides come in all shapes and sizes. There are dry, long tomes, short catchy ones with funny titles and flashy artwork and thousands in between. Most tell you the same things: What you should be doing, how to get to where you want to be and how to deal with all types of people. The exact same thing.

You don't really need all of those books! "Cancel the Meetings, Keep the Doughnuts" is all you need. Richard A. Morgan has interviewed workerbees at all levels, mid level managers and CEOs and has come up with some true gems.

The book is a collection of 369 one or two line gems from modern business thinking. If you follow them, or align yourself with a company that does, you'll most likely succeed. They cover everything from etiquette to dress, social behavior, and professionalism - anything that may be tied to your career.

Here are three good ones to get you started:

190: Never take credit for an idea that is not your own. (My personal favorite)
73: Take too many photos of your children.
10: Fear is not a good motivator. It only works in the short term.

Most of the others are right on but some are downright silly. Everyone needs a bit of silly, once in a while. I recommend this book and it should be required readings for all mangers and CEOs.

This volume in the series of Commonwealth Editions is wonderful for its rich photography. For those interested in photography, there are lessons here to be learned from a great photographer. There are fond memories here to be revived for those who have experienced the Cape. In the text one learns a bit of the history of the creation of the Cape Cod National Seashore and the quotations selected by Amy Whorf McGuiggan are elegant companions with the photographs.

Carmine the Kitty is simply spectacular. Not only is Carmine the most adorable kitty in print, his story about napping entertains my 2 toddlers and even encourages them to take an afternoon nap. We have made reading "Carmine Takes a Nap" part of our daily routine. I only hope there are more Carmine books to follow.

What an adorable story. I found this book to be very easy to read to a small child. The illustrations certainly conveyed the story and I am more than likely going to purchase other Carmine books. Ms. Brown lets the reader know how much she loves cats by her sweet prose and right-on descriptions of feline behavior.

This volume contains the essence of human wit and knowledge

Jonathon Greene presented in 1994 the ultimate summary of common sense and the most enchanting book I ever read in my life, titled : DICTIONARY OF CYNICAL QUOTATIONS". Since its contents are collected in the alphabetical order of all human troubles and problems, it is easy to find every day the most witty and cynical comments of ones daily problems. But after a while, having savoured the wit and concentrated philosophy on every single aspect of human life, sufferings and joys, the reader starts to admire more end more the unbelievable knowledge and experience of the author, who - in collecting the aphorisms, thoughts and spirits of all famous individuals and personalities of almost all nations, ages and professions - created a volume, which is absolutely unique. Since I am in the posession of this book, I spend every day some time with "Cynical quotations" reading or citing, and I feel genuinly enriched everytime I close the book after having consumated one or two of the quotations which contain the distillation of all human spirit.
