Oxford's official contribution to our demise

Enright should be given some sort of award by that lot over the Atlantic lake whom we broke ties with a little over 200 years ago. For his book on death is simply...beautiful. How he managed to cull so many varied and poignant accounts of and perspectives on death from literary (and non-literary) sources is nothing short of astounding. Of course, Enright has already won the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry. Is there also a gold medal for Death over there? If so, he is thoroughly entitled to it. It's rare that a literary work is such a page-turner as this one is. Everyone will have their favorite passages. My two are Bede's comparing life to the quick flight of the sparrow in through one end of the lord's hall and out the other in the twinking of an eye, with ignorance as to its plight both before and after; and the Ashanti saying, "Every time an earth mother smiles over the birth of a child, a spirit mother weeps over the loss of a child."-But, as I say, these are but two drops in an ocean of fine thoughts and sentiments and imaginings.-Recommended reading for all mortals!

This was the first book I bought of H. Jackson Brown. The presentation and size of the book caught my attention and after reading the introduction I was totally into it. Is very easy to read and can be completely read in about an hour. Do not ignore this book for that, this book can uplift your spirit at any time any where. I read it every once in a while to receive the peace and tranquility the book imparts beside the motherly wisdom. I an not a "romantic" but this book apply to everybody's sensible side, no matter how hidden it is.

Blessed Padre Pio, humble peasant and world-famous stigmatist, spoke simple words of Christian encouragement and inspiration to all who approached him seeking counsel. This biographical sketch and collection of memorable sayings is a compact and accessible introduction to the life and mesage of one of the great religious figures of the 20th century. Born Francesco Forgione on May 25, 1887, at Pietrelcina in southern Italy, Padre Pio joined the Capuchin Order in 1903 and was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in 1910. On September 20, 1918, he received the sacred wounds of Christ, which medical science could not explain and which he bore until just before his death. Although he did not leave his monastery and was for much of his life under obedience not to write or preach, this humble monk was renowned for his piety, his wise counsel, and his miracles. Padre Pio died in 1968 and was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1999.

If you're looking for this book (which M. Scott Peck called "one of those extraordinarily rare books -- that is to say, if you want a gift to leave your children, give this one"), you'll be happy to know that it has been published anew as MAKE EACH DAY YOUR MASTERPIECE, along with content from one of Lynberg's other books, THE GIFT OF GIVING. Lynberg has also added a lot of new material in his latest book.

It is a crying shame that this beautiful book is out of print. Lynberg is a wonderful writer, who has distilled wisdom from spiritual, creative, and philosophical writers and activists and directed that energy into defining how we can evolve into successful, generous people. I advise you to search out copies of this book, read it, absorb it, act on it, and pass it along. In moments when we question the very essence of what we have become as Americans, as citizens, as souls, Lynberg reminds us to look inside, identify our gifts and to share them with the world.

MORE NECESSARY TODAY THAN WHEN FIRST COLLECTED AND PUBLISHED

Review Date: 2007-04-09
I only find the excellent photo on the cover, seen here, and no others. I do find a comprehensive collection worldwide of religious and political statements in support of peace, following the definition of war.

We find here the bloody General Sherman"s complete statement of war as hell, Mark Twain"s posthumously published ironic War Prayer, though not in its entirety, Ben Franklin declaring there has never been a bad peace nor a good war, Dwight Eisenhower"s statements, although I could not find Washington"s similar Farewell Address warning against the machinations of the arms manufactories and urging peace with all nations and peoples.

We also find nearly every Catholic saint and scholar, beginning with all relevant quotes of Jesus, particularly from The Gospel of Luke. We read the very ancient former soldier Saint Martin of Tours declaring that as he is a Christian soldier he cannot fight. Of course we read the prayer ascribed to Saint Francis of Assissi but also interesting statements by several other saints, including Saint Catherine of Sienna and Saint Teresa of Avila. We also read from other world religions, including of course the Buddhist admired by Father Thomas Merton, but also compelling quotes from the Koran.

In short, this book which, although the photo appears to be of coffee table book size, actually fits into any adequate jacket pocket, provides a rich buffet feeding contemplation of the need and necessity of peace. The several quotes alone from Mother Theresa and Archbishop Oscar Romero provide ample nourishment for any prayer meeting for peace, as our Lord commands. Blessed are the Peacemakers. Peace on Earth. I would have sought more words from Pope John XXIII, etc. but let us be grateful for the comprehensive text of peace which we here find so inexpensively, yet of such great value.

Read it and carry it with you always. Share it with those you most love and inoffensively with those who offend you as an act of pardoning in line with the Lord"s Prayer and the quote from the Koran bidding peace to those who insult us. Normally such quotes removed from context are questionable, but here they are well selected and arranged and often quite lengthy, prepared by the Harper editorial staff in shocked response to the beginning Iraqi war over fifteen years ago and which still grinds on.

We cannot afford not to read this book, as a species, as a nation, as families, as individuals in need of peace and of salvation. Most touching here are the powerful words of the late great Etty Hillesum, who said on the way to Auschwitz that even this forced removal to certain cruel death cannot reach within her and disturb her solid centering in peace and in life.

Bite Sized Bits of Practical Wisdom

Review Date: 2001-03-01
Rick Ott admits to making his share of mistakes while working on as a student disk jockey at Michigan State University. But the experience lead him to a treasure that he shares in his latest book, "Practical Wisdom".

"Having no prior on-air experience," he writes,"I made my share of mistakes. I eventually noticed that when I dwelled upon a mistake I had just made... I subsequently made even more mistakes during the remainder of my airshift that day."

Rick developed the ability to erase the negative effects of a mistake from his memory and found that it supercharged his ability to grow and improve, remaining "free of the poisonous effects of dwelling on misfortune."

This is one over 90 nuggets the Rick shares in his latest book. He begins each segment with an inspiring quotation followed by his comments on how to integrate a new skill or idea into your every day life.

Pracital Wisdom provides bite sized bits of motivational guidance ala Byrd Baggett, Zig Ziglar and Todd Duncan, that can be catalysts for life changing action. His breezy approach is accessable to everyone, making Pracital Wisdom a great gift idea.

Translating good ideas into practice for individuals and corporations has been Rick Ott's mission for nearly two decades. After a career in broadcasting, he started a consulting practice where he serves Fortune 500 companies and others as a speaker and high performance coach. Rick is also the author of the best selling book "Creating Demand" and created the popular Nightengale-Conant audio tape series, "Unleashing Your Productivity".

A most interesting read. In addition to the obvious (good insight via vignettes of wisdom from leaders and philosophers, etc., followed by an application from Ott), I found myself going through the book with my 23 year old son and with each page we discussed whether we agreed with both the quote and Ott's insight on it. At times we would find ourselves at odds with the "wisdom" ... at times with Ott ... and at times with one another. But in a good way. "Practical Wisdom" created interesting conversation. For this category of book, it is excellent.

Reading Taki is like a good tennis game with an attractive partner, a warm summer afternoon in beautiful surroundings, and a perfect cocktail answer to the slur of Eurotrash. Taki is glamour without the glitz, wealth combined with anonymity, privilege and comfort without meterosexual softness, and manliness without burlesque or misogyny.

Taki's tales are a world most mortals never see, so it is a joy to read. What is amazing is the reality of the circles he moves in, rather than the fantasies spun by the likes of Judith Krantz, Town & Country, or the Robb Report.

An unapologetic elitist gentleman, ever giving communists and the spineless a fair punch in their clownish noses. Pure delight.

Taki Rules!

Three Stories
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-02
Selma Lagerlöf's stories of Scandinavian royalty in Queens at Kungahälla retain some of the Viking flavor of Icelandic bard Snorri Sturlason's Heimskringla (1230), which provided the historical basis for them. In "Astrid" and "Sigrid Storräde," a princess and a queen from the still-pagan land of Sweden join with kings from a Christianized Norway at Kungahälla-a site on the coast of western Sweden where the countries negotiated peace, often through marriage. The women are strong-willed, but the men are strong of faith; the drama Lagerlöf imagines between them reveals her romantic fascination with this conflict. "The Silver Mine" is a later work, and centers on the extravagant 18th-century King Gustav III. On a visit to a small town, this king learns how the parish has come to value peace of mind over material wealth.

In 1909, Lagerlöf became the first woman-and the first Swede-to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature, and several years later became the first woman inducted into the Swedish Academy. She is an exemplar of humanism, a champion of the world's unfortunates, as well as a captivating storyteller. Unfortunately, with her works out of print for over half a century, her eloquent writing has gone unnoticed by recent generations. Penfield Press is releasing four reprints of her work, including Invisible Links (short stories), Memories of Mårbacka, Scandinavian Kings and Queens, and Girl from the Marsh Croft and other stories.

Wisdom worth more than gold
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-20
Illustrated with engravings of Viking artifacts.

Silent and thoughtful should a warrior be, and bold on the battlefield; cheerful and content should every man be, until he meets his death.

This verse, and the others in this book, come from the Hávámál, a compilation of Old Norse poems that offers the reader a variety of practical advice, rules of conduct, and words of wisdom. Said to be given by Odin, Father of the Norse Gods, they represent a clear picture of the heroic ethics, home life and warrior code of the Viking Period (c790 AD-c1070 AD).

Seek swiftness from a ship, protection from a shield, cuts from a sword kisses from a maiden.

Although the words Hávámál are attributed to Odin, there is no mention of life after death, of religious belief, or of faith in gods. The advice is very practical and applies to the everyday life of the "average" Viking.

With half a loaf and a cup of ale, I have found many a friend.

Friendship is another important aspect of the Hávámál. A man often placed his life in the hands of his comrades, and he needed to be certain of their loyalty. Therefore, gold was not given to the son to inherit, but spent freely by friends. The penalty for betrayal was death, and vengeance was the noble course of action. Wisdom is worth more than gold or an unknown path.

Ultimately, these proverbs paint a picture of the ideal Viking: he must be open, friendly and generous; he must be wise - but not too wise - he must keep his wits about him and be ready for a fight; he must hold honor high and be loyal to his friends and kin. In short, he must be the perfect hero.

It's a "Quote-a-day" book so it should be filled with quotes I guess. Many ring true for cat lovers, and probably cat dislikers as well, since they decribe cats we've known and loved, behaviour people have engaged in, or things we've thought about our kitties.

It's a great source of changing sig files, like "Most of us rather like our cats to have a streak of wickedness. I should not feel quite easy in the company of any cat that walked about the house with a saintly expression." ~Beverly Nichols, "If cats could talk, they wouldn't." ~ Nan Porter

A nice little book to have around to lighten the day.

As the title of this book indicates, this small little book contains 532 quick quips and sayings. Some of them are serious and some of them are quirky and most of them are pretty funny. Well worth quoting! The quoters range from Carrie Fisher to Pennsylvania Dutch Sayings to anonymous quoters. Oh and a few are from bumper stickers! And quite a few from the author himself. And I wish I had said them, too. The problem with having a book like this is that it makes me realize how unwitty I am...

But then, I can always quote somebody else. :)
