I use this book everyday...it is so easy to find that exact scripture you are looking for. The intro of the book says for teens, but THIS BOOK is for everyone! I HIGHLY recommend this book to everyone.

Must have book for teens, youth leaders and parents.

This book is set up in categories that teens deal with and then for each category it lists verses that correspond with that category. Unlike a lot of scripture by subject book that list adult topics, this one has topics like peer pressure, drug use, abortion, alcohol, appearance, astrology, beauty, cults, dating, depression, fear, gossip, homosexuality, love, lust, porn and many others...topics that teens really do seek answers to. The really great thing about this book is that Ive found that there have been times when my concordance didnt produce results about a particular subject but this little book did. Another great thing about this book is that it makes a great reference for those times when we actually have to have a sit down face to face talk with a youth about somehting thats big in their life and this gives us fast facts without scaring our youth with a big fat bible. Ive found that youth will pick up this little reference book and find what they need but the task of finding quick answers int he bible is often to tough so they give up. Sometimes all they need is one scripture to cling to but if it means reading chapter after chapter to find it, they wont bother. Naturally, it has a lot of other great topics too, but I just listed a few of the obvious ones---but seriously, it is a must have.

Excellent for all ages

I discovered this book from my Sunday School teacher several years ago, and I have loved it ever since! I literally cannot keep myself a copy because I enjoy giving it away to everyone. It is an excellent tool for finding appropriate verses about nearly every topic from abortion to dancing. I couldn't imagine planning for a lesson without this book! I truly feel that everyone would be more than pleased with this selection. God bless!

A "must read" for birdwatchers, fanciers, and ecologists.

This survey of the literature surrounding birdwatching gathers together some of the most intriguing writings under one cover, exploring the literary side of the observations of Muir, Audubon, and others. These take the form of paragraphs of information which explore sightings and bird ecology.

Literary and inspirational

Review Date: 1999-11-04
At last we see the aesthetic side of birdwatching presented with a sensitivity so often lacking in nature writing. Whereas many birding volumes revert to more and more pedantic description, this is a work which, as its title suggests, invites us to experience a little of the ecstacy of flight itself. We study birds because we are inspired by them, but too many birding books concentrate on the study and not the inspiration. In this work the writings of a wide variety of knowledgeable writers--both well-known and obscure--present in often touching prose their first-hand observations of and experiences with a passtime they love. The careful organization makes this a useful reference work, akin to Bartlett's, for those in search of just the right inspirational quote. These are transcendent moments which otherwise might be lost in mouldering libraries, and I have been personally touched by many of the seemingly inconsequential but thoroughly delightful scenes recorded here. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to lift themselves or their friends above what can often be the drudgery of daily life, who would like to remember that birds fly, they are beautiful, and there is something magnificent in that.

Romantic?

The "romantic" birder will enjoy the many written excerpts that Hill includes in her book. The "analytical" birder may prefer something more prosaic. Not sure if you are a romantic birder or an analytical birder?...Read ths book and find out.

This book offers a wonderful look at the historical roots of bird watching. How refreshing to read truly emotional responses to the experience of learning about birds through observation. The wonderful blend of writings underscores the universality and agelessness of the sport.

This book is perfect for short reads -- great to pick up for a moment, either to refresh oneself or to share with a friend. It is a perfect gift for any bird lover -- I have purchased 6 copies to date!

I found a story, quote, or fact to inspire me for every occasion in this wonderfully empowering book, which would be the perfect gift for any female at any age. I found it helpful for setting goals and kicking the occasional case of the blues. For a while, I read a snippet every morning upon awakening--it certainly gave me a "can do" attitude! Hmm . . .I should go back to that habit.

I absolutely, whole-heartedly recommend this book--one of my very favorites!

. . .A queen is not afraid to fail. Failure is another stepping- stone to greatness," says Oprah Winfrey. That quote alone has me hooked to this book; and it's only one of the many phenomenal others in this great page turner. Page after page of the book is filled with inspiration and great words to live by and selections from the coolest females around.

I would recommend this book for any age. From the first to the last page, the lessons shared are a great addition to helping girls figure out how to strive for greatness no matter who they are or how they see themselves. If you decide to read this great book, you might want to also try one of the other four in the collection for fun. The other titles are: The Girls' Book of Wisdom, The Girls' Book of Love, The Girls' Book of Friendship, and The Girls' Guide to Life. So get over to your local bookstore, library, or online to get your copy!

I have had a number of people I've cared for over the last few years refer to this book as helpful. I finally decided to buy one and saw for myself why this is true. The book gently covers topics unique to the female experience of cancer care. Often friends and family members will ask how to connect and support the cancer patient. Thankfully, this book offers excellent ideas for conversation starters and perspective by using humor, inspiration and sincerity. In writing this book the author has provided a valuable gift for other female cancer patients walking her shoes.

One of the best books I have ever read. I'm a 34 year old female who just finished treatment for lymphoma. Ms. Hyde captured my feelings and thoughts perfectly. I highly recommend this to anyone going through a battle with cancer or to any caregivers also. I wish I had found this book when I was actually having my chemo and radiation. Some of her pointers would have helped me a lot (ie. always carry a blanket with you to chemo and to hospitals).

A wonderful book! It is an inspirational power punch. To keep highly motivated, I try to remember what it advises and I review it often. The motivational system it presents has given me a much better understanding of what I must do to become a high achiever. Energizes You and Makes You More Dynamic--Most Inspiring

Review Date: 2004-07-11
Any professional who is concerned with having more energy and dynamism (and who isn't?) should read this book. "Power Quotes to Energize Your Life" does what the author says it would-motivates you to become more dynamic, and it accomplishes this very quickly. The author discusses his brilliant motivational system in the introduction to the book, and the quotes were obviously very carefully selected and organized in a way to work on the reader's mind, making the reader become more motivated and dynamic. The author has obviously done something very remarkable because, as soon as I begin to read this book, I feel better; and I can open it at any page and get inspiration. I have never encountered a book that has given me more inspiration. When I have to deal with a specific situation, I go to the relevant chapter, and, in a very short time, I get the dynamic thoughts I need for managing. I urge all to read this most wonderful book.

A great book of quotes, beautifully written and organized in such a manner that it's simple to read and very easy to follow. The way the author arranged each chapter, section and the quotes chosen for each topic is unique and seems effortlessly weaved together. This book is immensely readable, it seems like it makes what the author has learned come alive for you. It's a stylish, elegant and generously humane work by the author. It mesmerizes and convinces one of what it takes to live a life of hope and joy in an age of uncertainty and cynicism. It will rekindle your love of life and your desire to make the world a better place for yourself and others. This corollary aspiration generated some of the greatest reading pleasures I've experienced so much so that I wanted to share it everyone I know. I've given copies of this wonderful book of quotes to my Vice-President, the President of the company I work for, several Managers and Directors, colleagues and friends. I also gave a copy to my son who is never without it. I hear him quoting from the book to his friends. I strongly believe that the motivational system the author spoke of in Chapter 1 with the 6 primary qualities have greatly helped my son become more focused in his goals for the future. Think about it - here are quotes from some of the greatest minds in our history at your finger tips to help inspire, motivate and energize you towards a better life.

The appetizer before the feast

This is a wonderful anthology of Lewis' writings. Taken from many of his well known and lesser known works, this is a great reference tool for anyone who is familiar with his works and especially those of us who only know him from his Narnia Chronicles. After much soul searching, Lewis became converted to Christianity. He moved from atheist to Christian theist. With much thought and talks with Henry Dyson and J.R.R. Tolkien, he became convinced about Christianity. From this conversion, a great Christian apologist was born or perhaps reborn as his life and thoughts expanded and shifted. Within this work are the thoughts of the pre and post converted Lewis. His train of logic can be followed and examined in a more readily available format. This hopefully will not eliminate the need to read his works but serve as a taste that leads to further readings. Lewis had an interesting perspective and viewed things from both sides of the coin and sometimes the edge as well.

Reading through these thoughts causes me many times to stop and reflect. Lewis was the type of author that really makes one think. Whether browsing by specific subject or source, this is a reference tool that is well worth adding to the shelf.

Better than a box of chocolates!

As other reviewers have noted, everything Lewis wrote is amazing. The profundity of his thought and the simplicity of his presentation are two of the characteristics which mark him as a literary master. This book then gathers gems from Lewis' corpus, they are grouped topically, and indexed. Thankfully there are also references made to the source from which any given quote was taken, so that future reading is made easier to find. This is certainly a good reference book to have for reflection, inspiration or instruction.

As many of the previous reviewers said this book has many quotes from the original series, to The Next Generation, to Deep Space Nine, to Voyager, and all the movies. It is a light book that you can pick up and put down or as another reviewer said read it lazily under a tree.
Also as other reviewers stated it has great cross-referencing in the back by speaker or theme. The quotes are all placed into different chapters by general subject but several of the quotes are repeated in several places since they may cover more than one area.
The book also lets you see how the overall Star trek series has evolved over time by the types of quotes that were used and in what specific series. It is interesting to see how some quotes are re-used with slightly different wording from series to series to hammer home a point about the essence of star trek.
(Note: This book does not include anything from the animated series or Star trek Phase II. That is fine since the bulk of Star Trek is included)

Basically this is a wonderful idea for a book. The world does need more kindness. And Kindness , being kind to others not only makes us better people it also enriches our lives and gives them meaning. To give is often the greatest form of helping oneself possible.
Nonetheless I could have wished some of the stories here were more 'tough and complicated ' stories. I also could have wished that there was more deep thought about kindness. For kindness too has its qualification in the Jewish wisdom, " He who is kind to the cruel will end up being cruel to the kind"
Kindness is important. We should all be kind as we can. But there is a time and place for everything.

Small but powerful book packed with practical ideas!

Review Date: 2007-08-03
"Imagine what would happen if there were an outbreak of
kindness in the world," notes Daphne Rose Kingma in the foreword
to RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS by the editors of Conari
Press . . . you'd bring "delight and goodness
to yourself and others."

Methinks that could well be possible; i.e., if everybody took
the time to read this short but oh-so-powerful book . . . it is
packed with practical ideas that can be applied to work
situations, such as the following:

I had a client who owed me a good deal of money.
Eventually she stopped seeing me, but each month
I would send her a bill and receive no response.
Finally I wrote to her and said, "I don't know what
difficulty has befallen you that you are unable to pay
me, but whenever it is, I'm writing to tell you your debt
is forgiven in full. My only request is that at some point
in your life, when your circumstances have changed, you
will pass this favor on to someone else."

By the same token, there were perhaps an equal number
of things that could be utilized if you wanted to make
your home life more enjoyable, including this one:

There was a time in my life when everything was working
so smoothly, I found myself sitting at home one Saturday
with all my work done, all my household chores completed:
dishes washed, laundry folded and put away, house dusted,
grocery shopping completed, and that delicious feeling of
having nothing to do. Then I thought about a friend from
work who was a single mother of two small children and
never seemed to have the time for anything. I jumped into
my car, drove over to her house, walked in and said, "Put
me to work." At first she didn't really believe it, but we ended
up having a great time, cleaning like mad, taking time out to
feed and play with the kids, and then diving back into the
chores.

I also liked the quotes sprinkled throughout the book . . . what
caught my attention was the fact that many had not been
seen by me previously, including:

* Do every act of your life as if it were your last.--Marcus Aurelius;

* I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the community,
and as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it whatever
I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the
harder I work, the more I live. Life is no "brief candle" to me.
It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for a
moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible
before handing it on to future generations.--George Bernard Shaw; and

The question is not whether we will die, but how we will live.--Joan
Borysenko.

Lastly, I appreciated the thought-provoking suggestions presented
throughout RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS . . . among the ones
that caught my attention were these:

* As you go about your day, why not pick up the trash you find on
your sidewalk?

* Buy a big box of donuts or chocolates for the office next to yours
Or the kids who hang out on the street corner. Or the UPS person
or the mail carrier.

* If you have an infirmed person living near you, offer to do the grocery
shopping for him or her.

This book does not need a long review. It is simply about the very best of what human beings are capable of doing. Random Acts of Kindness is simply the most important book I have ever read. -- Sam Yulish, author of WHERE HAVE ALL THE HIPPIES GONE? and THE HESITANT PSYCHIC.

The Book That Spread The Idea That Is Battling For the World's Soul

In 1982, California peace activist Ann Herbert wrote on a placemat at a restuarant "Practice random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty." A fellow diner was impressed by these words, and wrote them down. Gradually they spread and inspired conversation and thought. This international bestseller greatly accelerated the process. Today there is a World Kindness Movement and many organizations spreading the concept of kindness throughout our country.

Bestselling author Dapne Rose Kingma writes the forward, and there is an introduction by Dr. Dawna Markova. But about 63 others participated in stories and ideas for this book. It is a group project than transcends anyone author.

The concept of random of kindness is an antidote to the concept of random acts of violence. Random of kindess are far more common than random acts of violence, and the more they are encouraged, the more they should dominate.

Random acts of kindness can be both as simple as talking to strangers, as inconspicuous as allowing people in a hurry to get ahead of you in line, as generous as doing unsolicited chores for people in need, as philanthropic as paying for a stranger's dinner or sending books to a sick child.

Random acts of kindness can be as fulfilling as climbing a tree after a runaway child, and then leading the child down, or as planting a tree that others will enjoy decades letter. They can be forbearance in the case of a minor traffic accident or of a personal debt. They can be meaningful advice given, compassion and empathy shared. They can be tips given in appreciation of the server instead of the value of the service. They can be the willingness to let others act on misunderstandings despite some element of personal sacrifice by the actor.

The endless examples of the ways people can treat others with random kindness are well sampled in this book. So are inspirational quotes.

Pennsylvania founder William Penn says "If there is any kindness I can show, or any good thing I can do, let me do it now, and not dter or neglect it, as I shall not pass this way again." Martin Luther King describes the concept of agape as "understanding, create redemptive goodwill toward all men...and overflowing love which seeks nothing in return. When you rise to love on this level, you love all men not because you like them, not because their ways appeal to you, but you love them because God loves them."

The Dalai Lama says "My religion is very simple. My religion is kindness." Jesus says "If you bring forth what is inside of you, what you bring forth will save you. If you don't bring forth what is inside of you, what you don't bring forth will destroy you."

Herman Melville says "We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow men; and among these fibers, as sympathetic threads, our actions run as causes, and they come back to us as effects." William James says "I am done with great things and big plans, great institutions and big success. I am for those tiny, invisible loving human forces that work from individual to individual, creeping through the crannies of the world like so many rootlets, or like the capillary oozing of water, which, if given time, will rend the hardest moments of pride."

M.C. Richards says "Compassion is an alternate perception." Albert Einstein says "A human being is part of the whole that we call the universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest--a kind of optical illusion of conscioiusness. The illusion is a prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for only the few people nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living beings and all of nature."

So having demonstrated the relevance and the vitality of the random acts of kindness philosophy to both everyday situations and to the thoughts of the world's greatest humanitarians, the authors praise part of the beauty of the concept of random acts of kindness as "the turnaround from the ugliest and most frightening of all phrases: random acts of violence....It's so easy to fear. It's so easy to create an almost palpable reality out of our imagined teerror. Random acts of kindness ring pure and true to that fear, as life-confirming revolutionary acts."

"Kindness," the authors say, "is soft and bubtle. It permeates everything it comes in contact with, remains as a permanent reminder of what could and should be."

At some level, this is a book of great idealism. At another level, it is a book of great pragmatism. A world of kind people is a world that values all people and gives all people the great gift of a friendly and supportive environment.

This reviewer can think of no one who would not beneift from reading this book. At a practical, everyday level it is an invaluable guide to building up communities of hope, trust, friendship, and love. It seeks not a Utopia on Earth, but communities around the globe worthy of the best aspirations of our most profound and visionary insprirational leaders and the day to day lives of our nicest and kindest people.

We started out signing with our first child as a baby, then wanted to continue learning American Sign Language together as a family, as a second language and as part of our homeschooling. I searched for a dictionary that would meet our family's needs as being easy to use, small enough to carry in the diaper bag, and good for those new to learning ASL. I reviewed other ASL dictionaries and this one best met our needs. What I like most is that it lists the greatest number of words. Because there are fewer words in the ASL vocabulary (for example, the same sign can mean beautiful AND pretty) sometimes we look up one of the words that does not have a direct ASL equivalent. This book refers the user to the correct word. In some other dictionaries, there is simply no entry so the user is left trying to figure out other words to look up. I also like the price and that the author is respected in her field.

A handy guide to have around

I am fairly new to ASL, and I find this fairly easy to use. While no means comprehensive, it does have a number of signs you will probably need in your daily life. While it does use drawings, it also tells the user what handshapes to use and how to move them. At the back is the alphabet and numerals.

I don't think this should be someone's only guide to ASL, but it is a good supplement to carry with you to practice.

We have an employee that was born deaf. He has been to the best schools for the deaf available in this area since he was a child. I would consider him an expert at the different sign languages and also lip reading. When he looked at this book he let me know that it was very good with up to date signs and easy to understand examples. I ordered three copies for use at work and one for him. This book has at least 4500 signs. He explained that he knew over 3000 signs but couldn't possibly know or remember them all. This is a great reference for all of us. A real communication bonus.
