I love this handy compilation. Whatever the occasion, there's a quotation that will fit. It makes a thought provoking read on it's own, encouraging one to think creatively and so inspirational. Rilke, Disrali, proverbs, and even Joni Mitchel. Truly a wide array of outstanding individuals and thier thoughts on the one thing we all have in common. Love.

Ever need to make a toast? Enjoy the occassional glass? This may be the book for you. The Magic of Wine is a pocket sized volume which contains some of the best (and most unusual) wine quotes I've ever come across. The price is right, and the tone is perfect.

This tucks nicely into a wine-basket you're creating for a friend. While it's small and relatively short, it's chock-full of interesting quotes and timely quotes. It covers everything from Alcaeus ("The best medicine is wine") to Leonard Bernstein ("Wine snobbery, of course, is part showmanship, part sophistication, part knowledge and part bluff.")

In fact, be sure to grab yourself a copy too. It's great to read by a fire, with a glass of wine in your hand!

A Treasure

Here are some useful living tips, advice and observations from that quintessential American literary figure Mark Twain, real name Samuel L. Clemens. This compilation contains a delightful mix of humorous writings on the mundane and sometimes very unusual occurrences that reflected his many gifts as a writer/humorist. Many of these snippets are from some of his more famous works, while others are from personal sketches and writings not as well known. The tarantulas escape, a borrowed overcoat, a lecture to a youth group, the use of foul language, a note to a burglar, and so many other little anecdotes, observations, and etc will elicit periods of laughter from the reader, as it did for me. A wonderful little treasure.

Mark Twain in his writing very often surprises us and makes us laugh. His greatest gift is his humor. And the wisdom he provides on various aspects of daily living however sarcastic and cynical it may seem at times is grounded in a sane realistic view of humanity.

Twain at his best.

This book hits home if you're a quote fanatic as I am. As you scroll through the pages of this book you will see each quote is carefully chosen and eloquently written. What grabbed me about this book more than others is the fact that Deborah, Bruce and Tammy not only chose wonderful quotes coined by the masters of our time but also thoughts from regular day to day people and I think that makes it easy for people like myself to be able to identify with what is being written. Spirituality and idea's on positive thinking are spread throughout the pages of this book and I would advise all to pick it up and watch it change your life and brighten your day as it did mine. Thank You to the authors who wrote this book, you inspired me to bring more positive thoughts into my life; and I do so by reading a page of this book everyday.

Just finished reading this book. There are very helpful quotes and sayings from everyone from Cicero to Einstein packaged in a very helpful format. It is a good resource tool and brings inspiration to the reader. Every now and then you realize a really "great" thinker thought something you have been thinking about for a long time! And you get to enjoy the wisdom of the ages. The messages set forth do bring forth the magic of the Law of Attraction and a realization that it is a concept that has been around for awhile. The book was a very enjoyable and helpful read.

If you like StoneWall Jackson, You'll love this book. There are so many famous quotes here. Many the Civil War buffs know, many they may not be aware of. From his most quoted lines to some very obscure ones.

You can't go wrong with this book

So much has been written about Thomas J. 'Stonewall' Jackson that at times it become hard to separate the reality from the myths. This isn't a criticism but rather just a fact - history is interpreted in so many ways and this applies to Stonewall as it can to any other historical figure.

This little book of quotes, both by Jackson and by those who knew him give us a better understanding of Jackson - the man and the soldier. There are quotes by Lee and McClellan, Garnett and Ewell, but it is the words of Jackson himself, which come across with power and passion. Indeed, at times you can almost feel the piercing blueness of his gaze as he moved into battle.

This is a good little book, it gives a depth of insight into Jackson without having to read longer biographies. I recommend it to you.

Really shows who Stonewall Jackson really is

I love learning about the Stonewall Jackson. By reading this book you found out that everytime Jackson won a battle he did not take credit for the victory he would give it to God. Stonewall Jackson would do anything for his contury and God. When reading this you found out how religous he is. My favorite quote would be, "Our God was my shield. His protecting care is an additional cause for gratitude." This book really shows the true Stonewall Jackson. I learend a lot about how even his enemys love him. This is a great book for anyone to read that loves the Civil War or Stonewall Jackson.

Wisdom is a product of a long years of experience. Quotation is wisdom in print. So what you are now doing is sharing this wisdom to your readers/customers who want to acquire the knowledge but probably are not yet ready to experience it. Quotations are intellectual property -- perhaps, they can be shared with others but not sold.

Informative Compilation of Primary Sources

Dr. Lewis has written yet another informative compilation about the Middle East. I only wish that he could have included more about Sultan Bayezid II and his acceptance of the Spanish Jews expelled by Ferdinand and Isabel; the Afghan Jewish community in Herat; or the travels of Joseph Wolf, 1795-1862.

Fascinating!

I love this book. You read main primary sources from the last 2000 years, reflecting on West Europe-Islamic Asia/Africa relations and perceptions. The book can be read eclectically. It shed lights on how things were, and how they led us to where we are today!

A Delightful Anthology

Review Date: 2003-06-16
I would like to start out by saying that I am a huge fan of Bernard Lewis. All of his books I have gotten my hands on thus far have been superb and this is no exception. In this case, Lewis opted to collect various writings and excerpts showing the interplay between the Middle East and the "west". After starting out with misconceptions and prejudices (on both sides), he goes on to show differing views on travel, government, society, arts, science and even food and drink. Interestingly enough, relatively little focused on the early period, despite the immense glory of Egypt, Persia, Mesopotamia and other Middle Eastern nations. There is a great deal of historical material though, including the early Islamic era, the Byzantine Empire and even the Roman Empire. Much of the material focused on the last few centuries though, which I suppose is natural given the increased contact between Europe and the Middle East. The sources come from a truely vast array. There are excerpts from the Qu'ran and the Bible, as well as sayings attributed to the Prophet Mohammad. These stand beside the works of Shakespeare, commentary by T.E. Lawerence ("Lawerence of Arabia") and Sir Richard Francis Burton, and messages delivered by Imam Khomeini. However, not all historical figures would be so well known to western ears. Excerpts from the great traveller ibn Battuta and the historian/philosopher ibn Khaldun also appear here. The vast amount of events and places is astounding. It records the Ottoman Empire at its height (indeed, many of the excerpts do deal with the Ottoman Turks), Napolean's entering north Africa, the Crimean War and the Crusades. Indeed, theres a small selection of passages dealing with the Assassin sect, of which Lewis has written an entire book. In addition, theres even a few pages which give some examples of words of Arabic, Turkish and Persian origin which have made their way into the English language.
The sheer volume of material contained within this book is simply amazing. Although they don't give as much information as one might like, the passages, excerpts and quotes included in this book provide windows into Middle Eastern life and history. Ultimately, I must strongly recommend that any student of Middle Eastern or Islamic history at least give this book a look. You won't regret it.
