A nice daily dose of yogic teachings in a small packageReview Date: 2008-07-06
You don't sit down and read this like a novel - what you get are tiny, thoughtful blurbs, one for each date of they year, about bringing yoga into all areas of your life.
Sometimes the book is a bit too simple with nuggets like: You need a red pair of shoes! Drive the speed limit! Or, chocolate is sacred and you deserve to eat some!
And there are a lot of family-oriented homilies such as reminders to model behavior for your grandchildren. This is a wasted day if you don't have children, much less grandkids! But in the days where something does not apply to me I try to mentally replace the words, as in, "model behavior for your nieces," or just flip around to find a blurb that speaks to me instead of the one slotted for that particular date.
The VAST majority of the daily aphorisms (teachings) are quite thoughtful, providing good spiritual reminders towards bringing your yoga practice into your daily existence. Sometimes I resist these little "daily dose" type books as simplistic and honey, but this one is worthwhile.
For example, September 23 reminds us the nature of the mind is to be agitated. The author gently reminds us in an aphorism about meditation that this is to be expected, and that's it's better to *be* with your mental agitation than to try to control or eliminate it. June 29th just recently reminded me to love people in spite of themselves, in spite of myself (a very useful daily mantra when seeking peace in all kinds of frustrating interactions).
One can use this book also as an adjunct to writing in a personal yoga journal. If I wasn't lazy about journaling, I think I'd find that pretty useful. :)
More uses: this would be a very nice gift book for anyone exploring yoga. It would make a good by the bedside kind of book, for people to meditate on these ideas upon arising or before sleep. Or take the book along on any mass transit commutes, to read and think when traveling.
As for myself, I keep it in the bathroom, so I may mull over my relationship with the teachings as I sit on the throne. :)

The Little Zen Companion that isReview Date: 2006-02-24
I gave a copy to a friend who asked what Zen is. This is not a Zen textbook and yet it is. Zen is not linear or analytic. It is intuitive, poetic. And that's the way this book feels.
I recommend you buy it, read a few pages per day until there is no one reading and nothing to read.
Just a real handy check-upReview Date: 2004-09-12
I hand it to first-year law clerks who ask "why" too often, as much as recommend it to people who try to answer Les McCann's question "real compared to what?"
This is not a zen book as such. It is a wonderful quote-by-quote reminder that simplicity of thought and action is closer to truth than noise and clutter. It's zen lite maybe, while it is also accessible and thought provoking. A traipse through it's pages will always raise a smile and some recognition of having seen something clearly. Pick it up. If you don't like it, you know someone who will.

The Big Little Book of EnlightenmentReview Date: 2006-01-14
This really is a nice little Zen primer in the way that it touches on the essence of everything from basic Zen vocabulary (bodhisattva to zendo), historical figures (the Buddha, Bodhidharma, Layman P'ang, the Sixth Patriarch, Crazy Cloud, Basho, Suzuki, Ryokan, Dogen), to practice (koans, zazan, martial arts, haiku, tea ceremony, painting and calligraphy.) It is the wide range quotations though that really makes the book, from classical koans to the thoughts of beats, bullfighters, and scientists. It all blends together to really point to the path to enlightenment. And it is small enough that you can carry it around in your pocket to pull out at any odd moment for inspiration. You could do worse than to make this your first introduction to the subject.
There is both a bibliography in the back for more in-depth study, as well as, a listing of the sources for all the quotes.

Wit and wisom, abbreviatedReview Date: 2004-07-16
Some of it is wise, some of it is deep, some of it is funny, some just clever. Sorry - it's not the can-opener to enlightenment. Some people get upset when they don't get that instant gratification. This isn't a step-by-step instructuon manual.
Just read it and enjoy it without preconception. Meditate on it if you find something particularly worthwhile. Or don't. But just don't make it into something bigger than what it intends to be; take it as it is: a small collection of interesting and often pertinent pieces, with a little humour thrown in.
Read it one page at a time, and it'll last a long time. I find a different view of the flower each time I read - or re-read - a page.

Great Lessons From a GREAT President!Review Date: 2005-03-17
NICE PLATITUDES....Review Date: 2002-06-28
And it's in this sense this book became a disappointment. It so... shallow, I think it's the word best suited for it. The author is a Washington insider but not in the higher ranks. He didn't interview (not for the real thing, at least) the president, and he doesn't have a real academic background in topics like the title of the book promised: leadership and comunication. What did he wrote? Well, he knows some things about the life of Reagan, but of course he knows the best the period of the presidency. So he took a set of events, applied to them his method and ideas of leadership and then concludes "That's why Reagan was such a great leader". Come on... the air controller' strike, the Tripoli bombing, the debate with Bush Sr. about "voodoo econonics", everything was reduced to a man with a mesianic message, total control over his values and the values of the cabinet and total rapport with the familiar values of the american people. In this book, Reagan didn't have a single problem, even the smaller one; he didn't hesitate for once; he was the cheerished of the gods and EVERY scandal in his administration (just for the record: going to Nicaragua challenging the express will of the congress; the s&L scandal, which american people still are paying and will do for the next generations; the raise of the junk bonds of Wall Street; the bargaining with terrorists...) is minimized or dismissed explaining how it was impossible for Reagan to have known about those ugly things.
And I closed the book saying to myself: "One of three; one, Reagan was the son of Apollo or Zeus, Captain Marvel himself and being that is not an example for anybody; or two, maybe Reagan INDEED hesitated and wasn't sure all the time about every single decision but the guy who wrote the book couldn't know that because not everybody speak to a president, so he did what he could: he took the newspapers of the time and wonder what should've HE do had he been the president; or three, maybe it's just the real biography and thoughts of Reagan haven't been written yet...
If you want to learn about some lessons of leadership form some greatest men of America, "Lincoln on leadership" or "The founding fathers on leadership" are better options. Not masterpieces, but at least theyhave the advantage of some SERIOUS historic perpective.
Finally, How Reagan LeadReview Date: 1999-02-24
The Power of Vision-Based LeadershipReview Date: 2003-07-22
The book is a four part study of Reagan's leadership effectiveness: the critical elements of his vision-based leadership approach, his mutually supporting leadership and management styles, the skills that made him the "Great Communicator," and the personal character that transformed his beliefs and vision into powerful realities. At the end of each chapter is a list of summarizing leadership lessons and principles. Strock's thorough research and insightful analysis made each list pregnant with meaning and importance.
Strock made a very strong case that Reagan's brilliance as a leader was his gift of a compelling, five-part vision (family, work, neighborhood, freedom, and peace) and the integrity of his consistent and disciplined actions relative to his vision. Strock also discussed some Reagan leadership flaws and failures-not many, but enough to appear honest and balanced.
Strock's Reagan was an authentic man of vision, purpose, and character. Read this book and you will understand how Reagan was willing and able to communicate great thoughts with authority as the leader of the free world, and why his vision for America was believed in by so many people here at home and around the world:
"Ours is the land of the free because it is the home of the brave. America's future will always be great because our nation will always be strong. And our nation will be strong because our people will be free. And our people will be free because we will be united, one people under God, with liberty and justice for all."

A.A. Cantor captures the brutal heart of corporate America in every page. Occasionally amusing, always astute, each page deftly reveals the ruthlessness of business and the keys to survival. Moreover, LIGHTS, CUBICLE, ACTION! offers far more than the cheesy optimism of teamwork and chasing the cheese characteristic of most books within this genre. A must read for all cube dwellers, LIGHTS, CUBICLE, ACTION! comes very highly recommended.

If you know people who fly, this book resonatesReview Date: 2001-04-25
I can just sit with this book for half an hour any time. It is a wonderful combination of humour - "Airplane travel is nature's way of making you look like your passport photo." (Al Gore) - might be my favourite. But there is also the deeply profound and quite moving.
It'll be a well thumbed and much quoted book for years to come.
Required Reading for Pilots....Review Date: 2004-04-12
This is a must read for pilots or ANYONE interested in flying or connected with the aviation industry. It is NOT a " sparse, flowery book of aviation poetry," - it is a very thorough book of aviation history in the form of various quotes. I would estimate that there are approximately 1000 quotes contained in this easy to read format.
This book makes a WONDERFUL gift for pilots and those who have always been fascinated with flying. However, unlike most books that contain a few poetic lines on each page - this book centers more around historic and literary quotes. Although it is more than a "coffee table" book, it is certainly a book that would easily interest most guests.
"Slipping the Surly Bonds" is divided into 14 areas and has an index for easy referencing. Areas of interests include: First Flights, Magic and Wonder of Flight, Air Power, Combat, Predictions, Piloting, Safety, Space, and Women Fly and more.
As a female Vice President of two small Aviation Companies, I have often searched for gifts for pilots, etc. who have been difficult to buy for. I have never gone wrong when purchasing this book as a gift.

Lovely book. Review Date: 2008-02-05
I'm in agreement with some of the other reviewers that it would be good to drag out your Bible and read the verses in context. Merely picking out a verse or two from the Bible and basing your entire belief system on those really isn't going to cut it.

We can, after reading this wonderful volume, be ready to gather our own gems throughout the day. Tom Campbell (US Congressman - R/CA) put it well: "A must read for all American youth and adults. This book informs and illuminates the way through inspirational Muslim literature."
