A neat little book to set on your nightstand, coffee table, or reference shelf 444 Surprising Quotes About Jesus is alive with interesting and devotional material. Divided into nine sections, the quotes look at many facets of our Lord. Between Phillips Brooks "Jesus Christ, the condescension of divinity, and the exaltation of humanity." (9) to A. W. Tozer's "Promoting self under the guise of promoting Christ is currently so common as to excite little notice." (177) you'll bathe your mind in 208 pages of confronting excerpts. To make this book easier to use, the compiler has closed with a Guide to Themes, an Index of Sources, and a bibliography.

Just to whet your interest, here are a few more quotes. Mother Teresa, "Many people mistake our work for our vocation. Our vocation is the love of Jesus." (56) Antony of Padua, "Christ is the dazzling bright sun who covered himself with a cloud in order to be seen." (125) St. Augustine, "Christ is the best husband." (128) Harvey Cox,"There has never been a better raconteur than Jesus of Nazareth." (137) Joni Eareckson Tada, "No other religion or philosophy promises glorified bodies, hearts and minds. Only in the Gospel of Jesus Christ do hurting people find such incredible hope." (165) There are a myriad sources, including: George MacDonald, Eleanor Roosevelt, Luis Palau, Ulrich Zwingli, Calvin Miller, Christina Rossetti, and Paul Bunyon.

The compiler, Dr. Isabella Bunn, is an interesting person - international lawyer, theologian, Christian social ethics specialist, a college associate director. Bunn's vast library has provided many of the citations in 444 Surprising Quotes About Jesus. - Donna Eggett, Christian Book Previews.com

Over many years, Dr. Isabella D. Bunn has compiled a fascinating and memorable collection of quotes about Jesus from philosophers, artists, statesman and writers.

The themes include:

Jesus as God and Man
The Life and Teachings of Jesus
The Love of Jesus
Life in Christ
Jesus as Savior
The Power of the Cross
Images of Jesus
Jesus and History
His Spiritual Legacy

This small book is just the size to toss into your bag and carry it with you to read whenever you have a few spare moments. It is filled with big quotes that will give you a new understanding of Jesus.

There are many quotes that were memorable for me. Some of my favorites:

They should have known that he was God. His patience should have proved that to them. Tertullian (c. 160-225) Church father from Carthage.

A man who was completely innocent offered himself as a sacrifice for the good of others, including his enemies, and became the ransom of the world. It was a perfect act. Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) Indian Statesman and Pacifist

My favorite is: To be like Christ is to be a Christian. William Penn (1644-1718) English Quaker and founder of Pennsylvania.

Armchair Interviews says: This book is rich with wonderful thoughts. Those thoughts will give you food for thought and feed you at the same time.

Another great Heartwarming Expressions book. I have neglected my housework much to the dismay of my family because of these wonderful books.
They are ideal if you are stuck for ideas for a craft project. As soon as I pick these books up, I instantly start thinking of all the things I can make ... and magically I forget about my housework. :0)

A great series of books and I am so happy that I finally have them all, I wouldn't trade them for anything or to anyone.

It's always nice to be able to add a little personality to your crafts and this book will help you to do that. It's easy to adapt to your skill-level: you can trace, enlarge/copy, or freehand draw any of the designs presented to use on just about any type of craft that you can think of. Of course, the primary thought would be for scrapbooking, but inside the front cover, the author lists 99 places that you could potentially use these sayings and clipart. In fact, included are a few projects for flower pots and a cross-stitching guide for five alphabets. If you're motivated enough, you can enlarge some of the art and use them for paper-piecing in your scrapbooks. Some topics: babies, country, school, Christmas, pets, and fishing/golf...and there are many more!

It keeps getting better with each page. If you're like me, and you're not all that familiar with the real Shakespeare, you'll find this a truly illuminating read. It's accessible, it's fun, and it sure is a better beach read then anything else you're likely to find this summer. What a terrific surprise!

Great reading in any type of weather. Witty, intellingently presented. Great choice of words. Makes William Shakespeare really a "Bill" who did write ABOUT the masses FOR the masses. Sharp focus on many of the plays that used to give me problems in analyses. Explanation flows effortlessly and make a great deal of sense, when presented with actual monologues! So few bucks for such insights. When Mr. MacKechnie urges his readers "onward" I was ready! JGRAINGER, PHD.

What a find! I bought this book on the recommendation of Joan Plowright's foreward and am so pleased I did. Mackechnie's book not only gathers an amazing amount of Shakespearean monologues, but he dissects them with considerable insight and wit. He guides you through each speech with so much info: why, where, who, that it all makes perfect sense. Any acting student would benefit not only from the technical wisdom but from the anecdotal wisdom as well. Apparently Mackechnie has worked with Laurence Olivier, Anthony Hopkins, Plowright, Ian Mckellen, among others. Highly recommended.

Going To Talk Back ?
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-06-08
This book is not a chronology of Fred Allen's life, but rather a selection of his greatest commentaries from throughout his long career. Included in the text is his priceless observation: "To a newspaperman, a human being is an item with the skin wrapped around it." As if that weren't awesome enough, the buyer of this book also gets: "California is okay if you're an orange."

Mr. Allen could make biting observations about journalists and politicians without offending devout Christian people like my older relatives. (They have regaled me with stories about his material.) Fred made biting comments while millions listened to him live, and parents didn't have to send their kids away from the Philco radio or the Zenith TV set. Fred never advocated negative behaviors for juveniles such as the premarital sex and drug use that Lennie Bruce recommended in the late 1950s.

I would like to see somebody read this book and then claim that anyone other than Fred Allen was the first thinking man's comedian in the United States. Can you do that ? Many latter day comedians (e.g. Father Guido Sarducci) agree with me that Fred Allen was the first such American artist. If you haven't read this book and you don't recognize his name, will you consider agreeing with us ? Or are you "going to talk back ?" (as Fred's sidekick John Doe used to say).

Another Allen sidekick was Senator Claghorn. He is in the book, too. What more can I say ?

The Joy of Rediscovering America's Forgotten Humorist

Fred Allen, the only satirical comedian of radio's golden age, is revealed as a true American humorist, in the pantheon with Thurber, lardner and Twain. This book contains a wide selection of his writings, clear-eyed, wsitty, biting, compassionate. Excerpts from his two meoirs have the quality of what Frank McCourt wrote 50 years later in Angela's Ashes. Allen, we see, was the father of contemporary comedy and his influence prevails today. Letterman, Carson, Bob & Ray, Keillor, Your Show of Shows, Sat. Night Live - all are arguably legatees of his original sparkling style. This is perhaps the most deeply funny book I've read in years and will bring joy to readers of all ages. And it's a perfect gift for young people to give to parents and in-laws who, if they remember, say, tyhe Dionne Quintupl;ets, will be thrilled to get to oknow the great wit Fred Allen again. If there were 10 stars, I would award them to this book.

A Perfect Advertisement for Augmenting and Republishing His Original Books

Review Date: 2006-01-28
In ways that many (if not most) of his disciples down the generations still have yet to fathom completely, Fred Allen was his generation's most permanent and pungently elemental humourist, a first-class writer who never tired of refining and elevating his craft. Without vulgarity, he lanced America's fooleries and amplified her misappreciated fineries, often in the same slash. Most of what subsequent comic generations and their fans considered the cutting edge of those generations would have been impossible without him, though he himself might not always enjoy what his disciples wreaked on behalf of the art. And, as the selected letters even here should show, Mr. Allen had a quality that even his stickiest barbs could not long obscure: he was a genuinely warm, humane man, whose affection and friendship was probably coveted even more than his impeccable wit.

Ideally, the unpublished material included in this book would be augmented to republished editions of Mr. Allen's two memoirs (1954's "Treadmill to Oblivion," addressing the radio years that graduated him to his stature as the medium's most mordant satirist; 1956's "Much Ado About Me," an affectionately objective recollection of both his bittersweet New England childhood and his arduous vaudeville career, not to mention a splendid examination of vaudeville itself) and posthumous selection of letters (1965's "Fred Allen's Letters," whose original jacket art bequeathed the Hirschfeld caricature that announces this book). But until such justice is done, "All the Sincerity in Hollywood" re-introduces a man whose wit was too deep, too enduring, to leave him frozen in time as a mere ancient radio star.

I received this book as a gift from my friend who knows how much I like Sandra Kuck. This book is so sweet, it takes you back to the simpler things in life and puts us back in touch with our feelings. Every print in this book is wonderfully detailed and so realistic. The pictures make you want to reach in and pinch that chubby little baby cheek. I keep it on my coffee table and everyone who visits can't help but pick it up. Everyone says the same thing, the details of the children are incredible. I have also received Treasured Friends along with Angel Kisses as a gift and this book is such a great companion to Angel Kisses.

A wonderful baby shower gift

Review Date: 2002-04-03
My five-year old daughter found this adorable little book recently and we bought it for her to give to an aunt at an upcoming baby shower. It is chock-full of quotations from folks both famous and not so famous, and the reactions any parent will have will range from outright laughter to puddling up. I don't know how author Janet Lanese rounded up all this good stuff, but she did a super job. A sampling:

"The family you come from isn't as important as the family you're going to have."

- RING LARDNER

"To my embarrassment, I was born in bed with a lady."
- WILSON MIZNER

"When I was born, I was so surprised I couldn't talk for a year and a half."
- GRACIE ALLEN

"One trouble in raising a boy is that father always expects son to do exactly as much work as he never did."
- ANONYMOUS

"When we look at actual children, no matter how they are raised, we notice immediately that little girls are in fact smaller versions of real human beings, whereas little boys are Pod People from the Planet Destructo."
- DAVE BARRY

"I just can't get over how much babies cry. I really had no idea what I was getting into. To tell you the truth, I thought it would be more like getting a cat."
- ANNE LAMOTT

You get the idea. Not only is the text eminently readable, but the design is attractive and enhances the quotations. Old-fashioned line drawings and silhouettes abound. All in all, this is a wonderful, wonderful book and just perfect for a niece to give her aunt for the aunt's baby shower--or for anyone to give to anyone who has children either old or young.

This lady knows how to capture the essence of how a baby affects the lives of all those they touch, whether they be blood-related or by choice. She has the knack to not only interview the world of babies, but how to relate all the gamut of feelings that babies bring to our lives. It brought back memories to me of when I was a new mother at age 19 and how prescious was by baby to me, and what did he think about the world he came tumbling into, and this young lady who thought she knew how to handle it all! Good lessons and insight, reviewed and remembered, all which can still be revisited with every new baby I hold and cuddle, even my own! AND, how much love and knowledge, patience and endurance our babies pass on to us!
