Daily Light on the Daily Path has served for centuries as a wonderful, uplifting morning and evening devotional. In the 1800s, Samuel Bagster would lead his family in morning and evening devotions (something all too lacking in most contemporary households) by compiling scripture references along central themes. His son Jonathan, remembering the power of his father's devotions, published the compiled verses years later as Daily Light on the Daily Path. Originally in the King James Version, Crossway has now published an edition using the English Standard Version, whose accuracy and literary beauty do justice to the original, and whose readability brings the 19th century classic into the 21st century.

I was initially highly skeptical about using this work as a means of daily devotion. I have never been one in favor of taking verses out of their immediate context. However, Bagster's work is a marvel. It is an inspirational work that carefully compiles the selections so that they are harmonized, yet their original intent is not lost. He made sure, as a good father should, to not twist the scriptures to his own meaning, but represent them to his family as they were meant to be read all along.

In some ways, it is not unlike using your bible's cross-reference system as a means of daily reading. The carefully selected verses around central themes are an enrichment, letting Scripture speak to Scripture. I have found this book to be just the start I need in the morning to begin my day in a mode of worship, as well as an equally positive reflection after a day of joy or toil. Now incorporating the ESV (my personal favorite for devotion, study, teaching, and preaching), Daily Light continues to serve the Christian in the beginning and end of his or her day in the Lord. This ranks alongside Charles H. Spurgeon's Morning and Evening and John Piper's Taste and See in my favorite devotional books, but Daily Light will always have a particularly special place for being exclusively and beautifully rendered in Scripture itself.

Excellent in every way

A morning and evening collection of verses around a central theme. I like it because it is well thought out. And I can be quickly edified while I'm waiting for the morning coffee to kick in so I can have my regular quiet time. :-)

Great for busy moms! Just enough to start your day with.

I needed a quick way to read the Bible in the mornings before my day started. I have more time for deeper, lengthier Bible studies during afternoon naptimes and after the kids are asleep at night...but in the mornings, my time is limited. The way the Scripture is broken into themes/topics is wonderful. The translation is beautiful and true to the original (from what I've researched and read about it), and the book is just the right size to sit onto a side table or nightstand.

Cannot recommend this enough!

"Most dogs don't think they are human;they know they are."

What a delightfully reflectiVe little tome aBout the interaction between people and their dogs.
This is a tiny book, and not a lot more than the price of a Greeting Card. It would make a great little gift for someone who has just added a dog to their family, have recently lost a much loved dog or in the position of enjoying their dog.
The description of this book sort of overlooks the numerous wonderful
pictures that accompany the quotations. Though there is nothing wrong with photographs, the pictures in the book are all paintings. And what beautiful, thoughtful and personal paintings they are!!I don't think that there is a single picture in the book ,that I have ever seen before.
As an example, there is the priceless painting of a little boy about 8 years old,who is kneeling in the dark, with a tear falling from his eye,his flashlight on the ground beside him;and he has his arms around his dog who has been found;after having broken away from his tether, which still hangs from his neck. The painting has no title, nor does it need one. What is so clear is the affection being felt between the boy and his lost, but found dog.
The quotations are all excellent and by many well known Writers,;all of whom obviously must have been dog owners and lovers.Here are some of them;
Alexander Pope
Rudyard Kipling
Lord Byron
Elizabeth Barrett Browning
Ogden Nash
Ambrose Bierce
Erma Bombeck
Stephen Crane
James Thurber
Konrad Lorenz
Jerome K. Jerome
George Eliot
Doris Day
And many,many ,more;including
Robert Service,who gives us this;

"The man was stretched on the pavement brutishly drunk and deadly to the world. The dog, lying by his side, seemed to look at me with sad, imploring eyes.Though all the world despised that man,I thought, this poor brute loves him and will be faithful to death."

I haven't had the chance to fully read it myself but one of my friends has been raving about it since she purchased it about a month ago. With just a breif glance at the book, I found it to be quite insiteful and a plethera of information for the wandering person inside all of us. I highly suggest this title to you the reader.

Rich Moran has done it again. He has managed to compile thoughts of business people and list them in neat, little book that fits in anyone's briefcase. Not a "how-to," necessarily, but a compendium of "tips" which can help improve interactions between business people. It's not often one can find a book that is amusing and helpful at the same time.

Colin S. Gray's "Fighting Talk" is one of those rare books that must be read by anyone who wants to be an informed citizen, voter -- or human being. Approve of War or disapprove, we still have to understand this violent phenomenon that has dominated human history. In 40 concise, punchy essays Dr. Gray, the dean of contemporary strategic historians, explains strategy, military power and warfare, security and insecurity, and, finally, the history and future of War. When you are finished you will understand the nature and phenomenon of War better than 98 percent of Americans, including especially, regretfully, the resident of that large, white dwelling on Pennsylvania Avenue. It's all here, in a series of maxims, which Gray admits is a format abjured by the master, Clausewitz.
Instead of the silly and ahistorical pronunciamentos of some, you get a fantastic sweep of
history, policy, strategy, and on and on. I wish that I could round up our ridiculous political class
and force them to read this. Inspiring!~

A first-rate book. If our national leaders had read this book it would have educated them on strategic matters and maybe kept this great nation out of the troubles it now faces. Unlike most books of maxims or principles, this one is extremely useful. Although the forty maxims in the book can be read in any order, it is best to start with the introduction and go maxim by maxim. I hope our next president has this book on his (or her) desk for reference every day he (or she) is in office.

Why strategy still matters

Review Date: 2007-09-07
Colin Gray's "Fighting Talk" is far more than a collection of maxims. It's a collection of 40 short, original essays each devoted to a specific aspect of strategy. Gray combines his masterful command of classic strategic theory (such as Thucydides, Sun Tzu and particularly Clausewitz)with clear writing to produce a book that is full of insights for both practicing strategists as well as students of international relations and security studies. Gray is at his best when discussing how strategy serves as the bridge between government policy and military action, making a convincing argument that a sound strategy can overcome weak tactics but the best tactics cannot correct an unsound strategy. Another of the book's strong points is Gray's explanations of Clausewitz's more well known theories such as the trinitarian model and friction. Gray makes these concepts understandable to readers who may have never heard of "On War", as well as providing insights for those who have studied the Prussian for years. The book's one weakness (which does not affect its five star rating), is Gray's neglect of the work of naval strategists, such as Julian Corbett. Gray does compensate for this by overtly stating that students of strategy who truly concentrate on the works of Thucydides, Sun Tzu and Clausewitz will receive a thorough education in their field. There is not much one can say to contradict this statement, beyond the fact that a specific study of the impact of sea power on strategy can only complement that which is learned through studying the masters recommended by Gray. I recommend this book without reservation to students; practicing strategists in government, business and the armed forces; and to those members of the citizenry wanting to make sense of what they view on CNN.

The thing that really stands out on this desktop calendar is that the artwork and calligraphy is excellent - beautiful to look at. The poetry for each month adds a nice touch. Practically speaking, I appreciate that on the flip side of each artistic rendition is a more basic calendar of the same month, with even enough room to jot a small note. Also, it's great to have a 14 month calendar for those of us who need a couple of extra months to get that new desktop calendar ! Anyone would love this calendar, but I see it as being an especially nice gift for the ladies in the office. Buy a bunch !

JD Kroft has been collecting and using these maxims for most of his adult life. Organized by subject, it's easy for the reader to find just the right saying for the occasion, whether for a speach, for an article, or even better, to tell your child or grandchild.

The sources of the quotes and sayings are wide and varied, including the Bible, famous people, and anonymous. More than a reference guide, this book is easy and entertaining to read. You can dive into a partcular subject or open it randomly; either way, once you start, it's hard to put down. On the same page, you'll be amused, inspired and provoked to thought.

What are my qualifications as a reviewer of this book? First, I'm JD Kroft's 49 year old son, Mike, and I greatly respect and admire the author, and value the time he's spent on behalf of his children and grandchildren (and the rest of you) to assemble the concise wisdom of the ages. Secondly, I've read the book. At times I've looked for a quote about a particular topic. Once I've found it, I just keep reading. Other times I've just gone into the book randomly, as I sometimes do with a magazine, and read quotes from one topic to the next.

This book is unique and would be an excellent addition to your library, or better yet be a great gift to your child, grandchild or other relative. Yes, I'm biased, yet beyond that the book is truly superb.

Great Advice from the Life of A Great Leader

Al Kaltman has done us a great favor by writing, "The Genius of Robert E. Lee." His subtitle grabbed my attention immediately, "Leadership Lessons for the Outgunned, Outnumbered, and Underfinanced." Kaltman divides his work on leadership based on the chronology of Lee's life giving the reader 260 brief vignettes delving into the personal and professional life of this great American. The 260 entries gives the busy reader a kind-of "daily devotional" Monday through Friday for all 52 weeks of a single year. Also helpful is Kaltman's use of putting Lee's actual words in italics in each entry. The index at the conclusion of the work is also a helpful feature for quick and easy subject referencing. Kaltman brings a wealth of information together smoothly, from the idiosyncrasies of the man, and the historial events of the time, to the present day realities of leadership and management in the workplace. Students of Lee, Civil War enthusiasts, and the corporate leaders of today's business environment can all benefit from delving into Kaltman's treasure chest of thoughts, ideas, and principles gleaned from the fasinating life of this great man in history. For anyone who's ever felt like they were outgunned in life, or outnumbered in the cut-throat competition of the 21st century business world, Kaltman's work will introduce you to the genius of a man who was overwhelmed militarily, but who was never conquered in life or in the lasting legacy of leadership that he left to us all.

Great insight and thoughts on management and leadership!

Review Date: 2002-07-24
Al Kaltman has assembled an interesting and refreshing book about issues General Lee faced during his entire life. More of the documented letters featuring opinions and Lee offered others during his military adventures through Mexico and the Civil War are intriguing. Kaltman takes Lee's approach to subjects on managing people or conflicts and offers advice on how to handle similar circumstances in business and personal life situations. This book is rather a quick read as topics such as preparing one's self, taking command, continuous improvement and the winning image are just a few of many that are featured.

This book is one you can jump from chapter to chapter on and not read from start to finish if you wanted as it deals with leadership approaches for various subjects. This book I recommend to anyone involved in business be it a salesperson or manager looking to better themselves with great thought. Also it can be a book one could keep with them at work as a helpful guide to reflect back on for insight on how to deal with situations that arise. Lee's style of handling issues is usually the correct and friendly non-confrontational approach which many could benefit from reading. On another side of this great book, Lee's failures or mistakes are also covered and Lee offers his thoughts on how he should have handled things differently.

A textbook rather than a history book.

I never read a book in this style before. It is not a history of Lee, but a list of lessons illustrated by events in his career.

The lessons are laid out chronologically in Lee's career. They highlight as much about his strengths as his weaknesses. More importantly for me, they give an insight into the Civil War that is uniquely from the perspective of General Lee.

This is a book that can appeal to Civil War readers, or it can appeal to those interested in Management.

It is an easy read, I like the style, and it is a book that you can stop and start as you like. No need to plough through it all in one go.

Practical as Well as Principled Then and Still Relevant Now
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2002-03-29
Obviously, Kaltman found in Lee's management strategies and tactics relevance to the contemporary business world. The book's subtitle reveals Kaltman's primary theme: "Leadership lessons for the outgunned, outnumbered, and underfinanced." That is probably true of almost all of the companies now struggling to survive. The material is carefully organized within 11 chapters which correspond in chronological sequence with the various stages of Lee's career. Kaltman has identified 260 specific "Lessons" each of which he summarizes within an appropriate context and is accompanied by a Lee quotation, followed by a brief "Advice" mini-commentary. Unlike so many other books which purport to draw such correlations between the battlefield and the marketplace (e.g. The Military Genius of Daffy Duck), this one is sensible. Granted, many of the "Lessons" are rather obvious and much of the "Advice" is somewhat simplistic. However, the content is quite substantial. I think this would be an excellent gift for someone about to begin or who has only recently begun a business career. Here are Kaltman's concluding comments: "Robert E. Lee led armies in battle, helped reconcile a people to their defeat, and built a great educational institution. Lee never worried about his legacy; he focused on the job at hand. He believed that our legacy is the work we do to improve the human condition and bring about better times: "We may not see them but our children will, and we will live over again in them." You may also wish to check out Kaltman's Cigars, Whiskey & Winning: Leadership Lessons from Ulysses S. Grant, Crocker's Robert E. Lee on Leadership, and Hilton's Leadership Lessons from Robert E. Lee: Tips, Tactics, and Strategies for Leaders and Managers.

Great Inspirational reading- also a great source for lesson planning. Each Chapter covers a different virtue-

A great source of encouragement under any circumstance- On page 34 begins LOVE IS SRONGER THAN DEATH- This really helped me know what to say to a friend whose husband died unexpectedly...

Much more than you will expect to find in a single source.

A help in walking with our God

"God's Treasury of Virtues" picks up where Dr. William Bennett's "Book of Virtues" left off. Wonderfully organized by utilizing God's listing of the fruit of the Spirit found in Galatians 5 as chapter headings. One can simply find a area of interest and peruse the inspirational collection of stories, quotes, hymns, poems and scriptures found in that area. I enthusiastically recommend "God's Treasury of Virtues" as a practical support in our daily endeavor to walk the Godly walk that we have been called to.
