Interesting book about five young people trying to get into major colleges. All have their own ways and different backgrounds. You will find yourself hoping for the best result for all five. A must read for high school seniors, but I think anyone would enjoy this book.

This book leaves me amazed by both the focused young ones out there and the rigorous climb to get into the right college. I started college in 1998 and even then, the desperation was evident. But today the process seems that much more saturated in complexity. Jager-Hyman has introduced a new era with her book-- she is a fresh voice of reason. Out with the books of plain old "How to" and in with this excellent documentary style "How to." Jager-Hyman gives us the real scoop. Any parents or would-be college students should be grateful!
A must read for parents and their college-bound kids

At the most esteemed collegiate institutions applications far exceed the amount of available slots. The reality is an increasing number of exceedingly qualified candidates are denied admission to the university of their choice. Joie Jager-Hyman offers engaging and informative insight into five-students' quest for Ivy League acceptance. And perhaps, most importantly, leaves the reader questioning a system that equates a person's self-worth with the name on their degree.
Awesome read about the journey of ivy league applications

Fantastic book! This book is so well written and engaging. I felt like I really felt like I knew the students whose college application journeys were portrayed. I even cried when one of them had (his or her - don't want to give it away) dream come true. It was also beautiful to read how their views of what will make them happy in the end changed over their senior year. I hope to share this book with other parents whose children are applying to colleges. Although my own children are presently at (and also looking at)state colleges, it's such an honest and personal portayal of the pressures of senior year. I hope the author will write a follow-up to describe the pleasures and challenges of college.

I began using Morning Meeting [ASIN:1892989093 The Morning Meeting Book (Strategies for Teachers, 1)] as a part of my teacher education program last year and found it to be a great benefit for encouraging positive social interactions between my elementary students. This year, I began following and implementing The First Six Weeks of School's suggestions and my students LOVE it! They enjoy greeting each other, sharing and doing the activities. I have likewise seen a decrease in the amount of behavioral issues within my classroom. The program will work with your own ideas of discipline, rules and expectations and I have found it to be invaluable as I begin my teaching career. I would recommend The First Six Weeks of School to any teacher (new or experienced) who wants to encourage a positive, socially interactive classroom experience for their students.

His motivation is wonderful and really simplfies the process for delivering the lessons. He has a keen insight into the secondary student's mind and how to create an interest in extraordinary artwork.

This book is mainly about Maddie's dad getting married with Stephanie, in Texas! Madison doesn't want to leave Phinnie, her friends, and her mom. And then, Maddie finds out that she has to do a reading in front of a hundred people! Meanwhile, back home, something very bad happens to Fiona's father, and Maddie wishes she could be back home. Maddie doesn't want to meet Stephanie's huge Texas family.....especially a Posion Ivy like cousin. Will Maddie get through this wedding? What about everybody back home?

Dr. Anderson's book is an excellent tool if you'd like to teach yourself aerodynamics and have the background in math to handle it (multivariable and vector calculus...get "Div, Grad, Curl, and All That" if you need a refresher). His derivations are very clear and his chapter maps provide a nice road guide to give you an idea of where you're going. This book is also very good at maintaining rigor in describing the limitations of the derivations, a necessary quality since a lot of us tend to forget that the results we see are only valid in certain circumstances (incompressible flow, irrotational flow, inviscid flow, etc.).
Very few downsides: a few typos and no answers to end-of-the-chapter problems.

Over 5 years as an aerospace engineer at Boeing and Lockheed Martin, I have used this book far more than any other for aeronautics. This is not only a good textbook, but an excellent reference, and one of the few technical books I have found worth reading cover-to-cover. Many engineers simply say "look at Anderson" to find whatever answers you need.

5 Stars.
Fundamentals of Aerodynamics, by John D. Anderson, provides an excellent foundation in aerodynamics for engineers. Presented at the graduate or senior undergraduate level, this book covers all of the fundamentals in a student-friendly manner that also works well as a professional reference.
Dr. Anderson has quite a gift for placing information in appropriate contexts - both technically and historically. The book is well organized and promotes learning by laying a solid foundation and then building on that foundation. The sample problems presented through the chapters are clear and effective at illustrating important points.
Major topics include: Incompressible non-viscous flow, Compressible flow, and Viscous flow (including an introduction to boundary layers). Significant time is spent on potential flow theory and it's application to the prediction of lift and induced drag.
Also recommended for students of aeronautics are Dr. Anderson's other titles, including:
- Introduction to Flight
- Modern Compressible Flow with a Historical Perspective
- Introduction to Computational Fluid Dynamics

This WHOLE series of books is a BIG hit with kid's between 9 and 13 years of age. It has EVERYTHING a child of that age loves to talk about. The stories are entertaining and very topical for kid's in that age group.
I was able to meet Henry Winkler at a book signing and he is a wonderful individual. He suffers from Dislexia and incorporates his difficulties with Dislexia during his childhood in a way that makes children understand that even though someone may be different, they still are important. But don't think these books are all about dislexia, they're not. They deal with issues that kids of the 9-13 age bracket face every day.
So far, I like the book about the Enchilada and my second favorite is the newer one about family trips. I can relate, my Sister ALWAYS threw up in the car.
Anyone who has a child with Dislexia should be buying these books. If your child does not suffer from Dislexia, these books are still very awesome, your kid's will LOVE them!

The Hank Zipzer series is amazing. It is so funny and yet moving. My son has become very empathetic of others and how they view themselves. Without prompting, he said, "I don't know why Hank thinks he is stupid, he is so clever and creative. Not everyone is smart in the same way." And this when he was in second grade. We have followed Hank from the beginning and try to get as many others to read this series. Hope you do too.

Don't let anyone tell you quantum mechanics is easy because it isn't. It is the hardest subject anyone can even attempt to learn. In my experience most books are written by people who are too brilliant and use maths which is too advanced for the average non-brilliant person to understand. This book is one of the best simple introductions to quantum mechanics I have read. Yes there is a lot of hard maths but let me assure you it is one book you should have on your bookshelf when you get totally lost and need to start again.

As an alum holding both undergrad and graduate degrees in a related field, I figured I would pick this title up for some pretty heavy reading. I was right. Even thought the title says "an introduction", there are several pre-requisites to understanding Quantum Mechanics, and the style of Linus Pauling's writing in general. The book reads very much like a textbook, and I would suggest at least a pretty good understanding of physics, mathematics, and technical writing before diving in. It's a great book, and a classic text. It's just not a casual Sunday read.
It's worth a read.

I read it once and don't use it too often. It's still an excellent book, but I think there are newer texts that are based on this one that may "look better" even though they cover the same topics. I enjoyed it very much. Pauling knew how to take a complicated subject and simplify (but not too much) it for ease of teaching.
Great, great book.
Great, great book.

This book goes beyond the surface to the mind of successful entrepreneurs, which is refreshing. The ballooning analogy to strategic decision making is very interesting and amusing. The real life stories of many successful entrepreneurs and particularly their reflecting back to the past successes is fascinating on the one hand and confusing on the other. One would like to ask what guide this book provides to persons without successful story in the past. Despite some unanswered questions, overall, the book is very readable, interesting, and rewarding.Learning to Think Strategically (New Frontiers in Learning)

The author denies this is a "How-To" book, but if read with the same care that went into writing this learned volume, it is just that. She combines historical overviews with theory and practical advice. I would think this is required reading for anyone in business (and, one hopes, by government policy planners).

Julia Sloan models the very concepts she espouses in her brilliantly written and just-in-time book. What sets her work apart is that she not only reminds us of the imperative for critical thinking particularly within the competitive global business environment, but she offers the strategies needed to develop these new skills in today's complex world. Sloan does this by demonstrating the practical application of classical adult learning theory. Sloan's insight and wonderfully engaging style makes this work a pleasure to read. This is a valuable addition to my own library, and a book I will certainly recommend to others.

Julia Sloan has produced a powerful, insightful and clearly written book that will become a benchmark in reframing our understanding of strategic thinking and decision making. In this timely work, Sloan effectively moves the reader from linear and traditional notions of planning and decision
making to the kind of critical thinking needed to gain competitive advantage in todayĆ's world. Sloan demonstrates how thinking strategically can be learned in a systematic way and she does this brilliantly by applying sound theory to real practice. Her work is at the same time innovative and down-to-earth as she guides the reader to the key attributes required in learning how to think strategically.

This is an exceptional book! Essential reading for every global business person. The author is clear, succinct and right on the mark with the differentiation between strategic thinking and strategic planning. The first half of the book is informative and the second half is insightful and challenging. Sloan raises questions that should be at the forefront of every strategic discussion: what and how are we investing in developing strategic thinkers? This book is candid, thorough and original. The author makes a convincing and sobering case for plain, hard work when it comes to learning to think strategically -- a welcome and honest assessment of what is necessary to compete on a global scale -- no simple short cuts. This is an outstanding leadership book and should be read by every serious executive. Bravo!

As a first grade teacher I used this book as an intervention tool with my ELL students last year. It helped with voacbulary as well as phonics. The activities are hands on and we were able to create several games using the lessons as well. I recommend this book to anyone in the primary grades. It is great as an intervention tool, large group activity or as a center.

This concept keeps kids interested. They want to figure out the little words and the big words created by the letters, so it's an excellent one for phonics. If you already use Open Court, it would be a good supplement. There is some prep time involved in writing and cutting the letters, unless you're smarter than me and use die-cut letters from a bulletin board!!

A very comprehensive book for those who are interested in using literature circles to boost their students' interest in reading and speaking skills. It can surely help you to gain a very good understanding of what literature circles are and the "tips" provided after the description of every lesson are quite helpful. However, the lessons described in the book are for first language learners and you will need make adaptations if you want to use the ideas with your EFL students.

This book is a useful tool if you plan to introduce literature circles into your classroom. It is an easy read, something that one can use as a reference as well as a lesson-planning tool. The way the book is written and organized allows me to use the individual lesson plans with my own literature, whether using novels, short stories or poetry. Having never used literature circles before and being a little skeptical, I am very pleased with this book's ability to explain the benefit and realistic purpose of using them in a high school classroom. The authors have definitely done their research and answer all the questions teachers have regarding the reality of using these circles. I am convinced and am looking forward to implementing them in my own classroom.

The premise behind this book is great. I was hoping to have some instant lessons to use with my fourth grade students. While some of the lessons are adaptable to that age, the activities are really designed for high school classes.

The author provided little additional insight into the application process than other books. Furthermore, when a student's paperwork was due "on April 31" I wondered how much fact-checking went into writing this book.
