Wonderful motivator for young cooks

This is one of the best cookbooks written for kids that I have ever seen. The recipies are more than your typical grilled cheese and PBJ: kids are shown how to make such items as yogurt cheese, caramel sauce, and other unique snack items. In addition, the book is filled with basic cooking information presented with humor and many illustrations. This was the first cookbook I ever read, and I still believe it to be a superior childrens' cookbook.

Enjoyable for all generations

An evening stroll engenders an unexpected friendship between an elderly woman, and a young girl. The elderly lady (Miz Berlin) recounts her childhood through beautifully creative stories which capture the imagination of the young girl and further ignites her curiosity about her elderly friend. The book's soft and poignant illustrations reveal the innocent spirit of the young girl's imaginings and gently draws the reader into the fantasy.

I think adults and children - young girls especially - will enjoy reading Miz Berlin Walks. It is a tender, touching story that should be shared amongst all generations.

Poetry that matters

Celia Bland is a voice that writes poems that aim for the brain and the gut. Her work is
highly ambitious without ever seeming so. She has the natural ear for the comic and the tragic,
the sublime moments of transcendence lurking in the realm of the every day.
Her language is an incessant delight of invention, working in the service of
presenting an often raw and raucous world with confidence and truth. This was that
kind of stunning collection of poems that makes the reader gasp, and wonder, and
wand to read it again.

The textbook was in very good condition, just as described by the seller. It arrived very quickly and saved me money by not having to purchase new.

Boring and overpriced

Sometimes text books can be so fascinating that you can't wait to read the next paragraph and learn something new. This is not one of those text books. It is filled with lots of junk that only makes the book thicker and heavier but contributes nothing to your understanding. So you must actively read and take notes on the important stuff or you will fall asleep a lot. This book contains some very nice images and helpful diagrams so know them and use them as a guide when you take notes. This is just a general introductory text, so it's a shame that it's so large. Future editions should be released in cheaper smaller volumes that deal only with certain topics, or they could just cut out all of the junk. You might consider buying an earlier edition or a cheaper international paperback edition because they aren't much different from this edition. I haven't seen the latest edition, but I'm sure the only changes were the pointless interviews and some new and more expensive pictures.

I bought this book for my Introduction to Biology class. It's quite affordable and I've no intention of selling it back once my course is done. The book is quite heavy, it's got very heavy and durable covers protecting the mammoth of a book. So hauling it to class with me is not really a delight.

The CD that comes with it is alright but I rarely really look at it. Most of the content is online. You can pretty much read the whole book online, if you have the access code, which comes with this book.

The material itself is excellent. The illustrations, all are very well done. I doubt that many people are haplessly looking for a book on Biology, if you're looking at this it is probably because you need one for your class. Either way, this book is definitely worth the low price it is selling for.

Nice Little Book That Makes for a Pleasant Read - a review of "Frog"

The plot has been outlined above and below so I won't reiterate; but will add that the part that I appreciate and emphasize to my children is that fact that Joe saves the frog (almost befriends him in children's minds) not by splashing about or by trying to capture him in a net, but by being quiet and slow and gentle. Frog, you see, is "very tired, and very, very scared" and Little Joe saves him by "[V]ery carefully" moving "his hand up under Frog's feet until Frog was sitting on his palm, and he lifted Frog very gently out of the water."

I like the compassion the family shows for the creature, as well as the fact that gentleness is demonstrated to be more effective than force. [I don't know if all children are this way, but we seem to spend a lot of time warning our children to be gentle with the cat, frog, dog... etc.] Nice to have this teaching 'seconded' by the author.

Four Stars. [B+] Excellent artwork. Good Read-aloud. Could be used as a book for an advanced first or second grader except for the fact that this is one of "those books" that uses the occasional 'funny-peculiar' shaped font. [My 6 yo had problems with those words, at least.]

An uplifting and beautifully illustrated tale

"Frog" combines an easy-to-read text by Susan Cooper with wonderful illustrations by Jane Browne. The book tells the story of Joe, a little boy who can't swim, even though other members of his family are skillful swimmers. This makes Joe sad. However, Joe's situation takes an unexpected turn when a small frog from a nearby pond becomes trapped in Joe's swimming pool.

This is a moving story that's told with charm and compassion. Both Joe and "Frog" are wonderful characters with whom I could really identify. The full-color illustrations really complement their story well; Browne does a particularly nice job of capturing the play of light in water. And together with Cooper she creates a very satisfying conclusion to the mildly suspenseful story. A sweet and uplifting book, "Frog" is a winner.

Not Just for Kids!!
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2002-12-07
I got this book at the library for my children, but I think I enjoyed it as much as they did! (I plan to buy a copy of my own!) Instead of a cool, impersonal presentation of artists and their work, this book provides a refreshingly personal view. The artists talk about their childhoods, how they spend their days (the answers are fun & honest!), their families, and best of all, they give us peeks inside their studios. I don't know about you, but I love seeing inside of an artist's private workspace! It's like a glimpse inside his/her mind.
The styles of the artists are very diverse and they use many different techniques that kids and adults alike would like to try out. I highly recommend this book!

This book is great!

Talking With Artists volume.3

This book is pretty interesting. It is about artists who share what they like to draw and about their lives. They are asked questions such as, "Do you have any kids or pets?" The illustrators show some of pictures that they drew when they were children. They also show how the children illustrators got their inspiration to draw.

I liked this book because it was neat to see how good some of the kids are at drawing and then to see them draw as they are older. Also that was cool it showed how to draw pictures in the back of the book. I recommend this book to people who are just stating to draw and people that want to read an interesting book.

Charming

Review Date: 2000-12-17
A collection of fourteen Jilly Cooper short stories. They are so much fun, written and published in the 60's and 70's they might sound a bit dated as far as romances go - the women don't usually have careers except the occassional secretary or assistant - but these are written with such charm and sparkling dialogue that they are enormously enjoyable.

The 'Red Angora Dress' is one of my very favourites - about a girl whose boyfriend Andrew is going off her but takes her to a party where she makes the mistake of wearing a red angora dress. A Pressing Engagement takes a refreshingly fun look at a false engagement Cooper writes in her introduction that 'Square Peg' is one of her favourites, and it does rate as one of the funniest - its about a slightly ditsy secretary who can never quite get things right.

Lots of fun.

This book is good bedtime or beach reading. It's a collection of feel-good short stories about the beginnings of romances. Cooper's language is humorous and ironic, the characters quite charming. The only thing that bothered me a bit was the fact that there were too many secretaries falling in love with successful men. In the modern world it would be nice if the women could be successful as well.

Don't expect deep emotional insights or earth-moving intellectual revelations but in the entertainment genre it's very enjoyable. Reminds me of O.Henry or L.M. Montgomery short stories.

Some great examples to follow
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2004-03-31
The preface is written by a former tutor of Alf Cooper's, Martin Goldsmith who is quite correct in saying that this book is a good laugh and is easy to read. Nevertheless, it doesn't lack good spiritual lessons. Personally I found Cooper's consistent habit of early morning prayer a fine example to follow.

Cooper takes us through his experiences and beliefs which led him from existensialist-humanist-Marxist to Pentecostal Anglican vicar. Throughout the book I found it difficult to know whether to side with him or not, especially, for example, on page 60 where modern-day prophecies are being made.

This book can be read at a fast pace and is quite enjoyable, especially where he writes about church planting and evangelism activities in Montserrat and Chile.

Apologies: I have not mentioned Jane Collins, the co-author, as this review refers to the MARC Publishers version of this book.

A good introductory to malt production and some producers
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.

This little book contains a very good summary for the layman of malt whisky production and details on some 24 producers. It is especially good for anyone who will be in Scotland and has the chance to visit a distillery. The book is truly "little", it is 6" x 4" and 60 pages long; it fits in a pocket perfectly for travelling and makes a good companion while in Scotland.
