This book is a MUST READ for anyone who is interested in the topics of divine guidance, ancient oracle traditions, the power of synchronicity and the immortal nature of consciousness. i found it to be engaging and written in an easy conversational style, using autobiographical stories as teaching tools as well as including stories from many of her clients. i think Colette Baron-Reid has managed to breathe new life into some dusty old new age topics. What makes this book particularly interesting is the questions it invites rather than the author imposing answers or her imposing her opinions. In reading through to the end I was left pondering the deep relationship we all have with Nature and all living things and all that implies. The historic research was very interesting and adequately reminds us that history has been written by the victors during times of turmoil and transition and rarely shows the total truth of cultural evolution. The book tackles religious superstition with a sense of humor without being offensive and gives the reader some insight into the complex relationship between humanity and its collective need to explain spiritual experience. It left me with hope and a lot to think about. The exercises included were fun and meaningful although some required a little more thought than I expected. The symbol guide in the book will make this a useful reference guide for years to come. i wish she could have flushed out some of the sections .. the numerology was too short but i guess that would mean a whole other book. I was definitely interested in what the next book would be about!
I highly recommend this book. It is an excellent follow up from her book Remembering The Future, as a matter of fact I liked this one even better. I've read many books on this subject but this one really spoke to me. It's obvious she's authentic. I saw her speak at a Hay House event and was impressed by her incredible accuracy and compassion in dealing with the people asking her questions. There's a good buzz about her for a reason.

Psychic, Singer, Songwriter and Author! Colette is most definitely a talented individual in so many ways. I completely agree with the other reviewers...the cover grabs you and draws you right in. The colors are ethereal and the wings with the dove evocative of so many levels of spiritually and more.

Since cave-people first glanced at clouds and grunted to each other that certain clouds meant rain, mankind has looked to nature for symbols of glimpses into the future. Colette deftly guides through the maze myth and folklore into what is a more divinely guided way of opening to symbols. Having a gifted intuitives "take' on what symbols can mean just helps kick start the rest of us on our own means of divination.

Colette covers a wealth of lesser known divination methods Cledons, Aleuromancy, 27 Universal Unfoldments and no, I am not telling you what they are! Get the Book - teehee!

Written in a conversational style, as if you were sitting and chatting, Colette sprinkles her own personal stories and those of friends throughout the book. Just ebnough to be interesting, not so much as to be TOO much.

Yes, I am keeping this book on my bookshelf and will be referring to it over and over again...and I do not have to be psychic to know THAT!

Enjoy!

With her typical wit, incisive candor and generosity of spirit, Colette explores oracles, omens and signs in a whole new way. She shares her experiences, and those of her clients, to help us open the door to our own divine guidance.

And this time she includes a whole section on animals as healers and messengers!

This book is certain to become a reference, to be read and re-read. If you only buy one book like it this year, buy this one. You won't be disappointed.

Love It!

So many 'psychic' books that I have read seem to be written from the ego. The authors want to impress me, but they always turn me off instead. I love this book. It is so easy to read and so helpful. It answers questions that I have in a very down to earth manner. (pun intended). I have since ordered the other book by Colette and I am hoping it is as easy a read! If you are interested in spirit guides and messages then I definitely recommend Messages From Spirit.

This first book from Colette Brooks is the carefully constructed product of a lifetime of reflection. This genre-stretching work should appeal to any city-dweller who's ever spent a half hour on the subway looking around at his or her fellow passengers and wondering what it all means.

In The City is a fantastic read. I never wanted to put it down and the few times when I did, the book immediately beckoned me back. Brooks' visions and ponderings are haunting and thought-provoking. With a language and structure that is incredibly unique and exquisitely poetic, she pulls the reader into the heart and soul of the city- a world so familiar and yet like no other. Any reader will quickly see that this is one of those ever so rare times when a writer will bring a brand new perspective to the world, and let us all look at the same old city for the very first time.

A classic!

Colette Brooks has joined the ranks of writers like E.B. White and Jane Jacobs with her beautiful new book, IN THE CITY. Brooks' subtly poetic prose, gentle humor, and eye for the telling detail open the city to the reader, revealing its soul. Anyone who has ever lived in, or dreamed of living in, a city will find this book resonating with echoes of their own feelings and dreams. It is impossible to put it down and impossible to leave it behind. One returns to the book again and again relishing special moments, phrases and insights. Ms. Brooks writes beautifully, sparely and with a unique voice.

This changes everything.

Colette Brooks blew my mind with this book. Everyone these days is so caught up in classifying literature, of putting people in their little boxes, of being able to say "It's like Gatsby meets Eggers on a road trip with Kerouac!" and then along comes Colette and proves that it IS possible to completely reinvent the form... or to invent A form. IN THE CITY is part short story collection, part prose poem, part historical novel, part autobiography. The text itself evades specifics-- every time you think you've got her pinned, know exactly what news item or neighborhood she's talking about, she spirits it away again and takes you someplace new. People talk about reading until they get to "a good stopping point". IN THE CITY has no good stopping point. You jump into the river of Brooks's prose and you're carried to the end, released back into the ocean of your life-- no matter where you live-- looking at it a little differently, a little more closely, and with a lot more affection for the lives around you.

I read this book cover to cover the night my mother handed it to me. At times I laughed; more often I cried. Colette's story is inspiring; her sense of humor is amazing. After a particularly aggressive treatment she was feeling poorly and yet told her husband, "hat treatment was so strong the hair's falling out of my WIG!"I am grateful she has shared the lessons she learned: listen to your body, research and be actively involved in your own treatment, maintain as much normalcy as possible, seek the support of friends, treasure each day that you do have with your family, and most of all, draw on your faith to be open to the blessings God brings, even in cancer. This book is a testament to a remarkable woman and an exemplary faith.

An informational, diary type book.

This book is exceptional in the fact that it was written by the person experiencing cancer itself. No one can explain what someone goes through better than the one with cancer. It shows to trust your instincts, and check out all suspicious ailments. I would suggest that anyone trying to understand what someone with cancer is going through to read this book.

She fought the fight & the battle was won.

This book is a must for all who are effected by cancer, whether you are a victim of the disease or a family member of one. If you have ever thought of giving up or know of someone who has, this book will show that faith and perserverence can stretch a one year to live "death sentence" into four more years. This story enables you to get to know and love an ol' farm girl who loved life and taught her family to do the same, while remaining focused on the ultimate victory in our Lord Jesus Christ. May she impact your life just as she has mine, her youngest daughter.

I don't usually understand 'feminist' readings, but this book is a real exception. It is so poetically written, and it is really more about autobiography than it is about the author in the title. But it made me want to read Colette, and convinced me that she should be taken seriously, as more than the author of "Gigi". Flieger real knows her stuff. This is a keeper, for both theory mavens and literature buffs. Check it out!

This is a very critically insightful and readable book, a must for students of autobiography. It is as much about Freudian theory as about Colette. It shows how even when autobiographers 'tell the truth' it is never 'nothing but the truth' or 'the whole truth'. Also very poetic

An excellent psychoanalytic treatment of autobiography

This is an excellent psychoanalytic treatment of autobiography as an effect of the "mourning-work", with a highly original reading of Colette's own "fictionalization" of the events of her life. Highly recommended for students of psychoanalysis and women's studies.

In my opinion, this is a fabulous book for anyone who is starting to teach a pre-schooler the alphabet. The book clearly shows each letter of the alphabet, in both upper case, and lower. Each page has an illustration of playful cats depicting the example word of each letter. These illustrations are fun, beautiful and colorful, which aids in keeping your child's interest from page to page. The desciptive words are not your everyday child's vocabulary, rather they are words which your child will question the meaning of, thereby expanding their vocabulary (e.g.) Orange Opera Singer). I highly recommend this book. And I would just like to add that you do not have to be a cat lover to enjoy this delightful learning tool.

A great book on podcasting that covers an overview, fundamentals, production, and distribution. Amust read for serious marketers
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-06

I liked this book a lot. It is very well outlined. And it is very well written. I found it to be an easy read. But not a particularly quick read since it is pretty thick in page count and page size. The book is broken into four parts and 16 chapters:

I. Podcasting overview: Understanding the medium and its impact on business (Chapters 1-3)
II. Podcasting fundamentals: Planning and development (Chapters 4-6)
III. Producing the podcast: Production, delivery and legal issues (Chapters 7-10)
IV. Podcast distribution: Marketing, measuring and monetizing (Chapters 11-16)

Social media and Web 2.0 is comprised of a few tools that people and businesses can use to be a part of that community. The main one is blogging. And podcasting is a natural extension of blogging. What is said and has been written about blogging can also be said and written about podcasting. And this book does just that. Some people read books to get their information. Others listen to the radio or watch TV. I suspect many more listen to the radio and watch TV than read books.

Currently many more people taking part in Social Media and Web 2.0 are blogging than podcasting. But that statistic very well may change. And by reading this book one will probably understand and realize why. And even better, one will learn how to get involved in podcasting.

This book is specifically written for a business audience. It focuses on how businesses can incorporate podcasting into their marketing mix. It covers planning, content creation, legal considerations, branding, marketing, advertising, monetization, and much more.

I liked the chapter summaries at the end of each chapter called "Lessons Learned." They made it easy to get an overview of the book before I read it page to page. My favorite chapter was the seventh. It went into "Podcast Production." It got into sufficient detail and specifics that I pretty much saw what was involved in creating audio and/or video files. Emphasis was more on audio files.

The bottom line is that businesses should understand the power of podcasting and how to use it in their marketing mix. Podcasting can significantly improve a company's communications efforts with its customers, prospects, and the media. 5 stars!

As a podcasting and new media consultant, I've read just about every podcasting book out there (and authored one myself). This book is now at the top of the short list of books that every business podcaster (or podcaster with business aspirations) needs to read. The authors know there stuff and have done their research. I'll be referring again and again to the case studies and ideas shared in this book.

Must have for business podcasters

This book stands head and shoulders above all other podcasting books for teaching you how to make podcasting a go within the enterprise. I haven't read another book that addresses so many of the concerns that businesses have when they want to start podcasting. The other two that I have read focus on the independent podcaster and the issues that they encounter with a small focus on business interests.

What makes this book stand out so much for me is that it is written at a technical level that anyone can understand regardless of their role within a business. Every idiosyncratic element of taking a podcast from the planning stages production, copyright, distribution with rss, ROI and podcasting's role in integrated marketing is addressed in full.

Businesses and "internal champions", as they are called in the book, tasked with creating a new or social media presence through podcasting should pick up a copy. Podcast consultants, you too could learn a thing or two from this book. I did.

Many thanks to the authors!

I really enjoyed reading this book - even though I will probably never try the recipes. I read the whole book through in one sitting (although, to be truthful, it's a small book.) Besides being an interesting memoir of the author's childhood in Egypt during WWII, in a wealthy Jewish family, it's also an honest account of her alienation from her mother, which really spoke to me. The author is a good writer, which makes the book easy and rewarding to read.

Sometimes when images from newspapers or TV are taken out of context they can fall flat out of meaning or context. Not so for the revolutionary work of Emory Douglas. Douglas who was the Minister of Culture for the Black Panther Party from 1968-1980 and it's weekly newspaper artist amassed more works for the paper in a short period than most artists in a lifetime. But quantity is not the focus here but quality, growth and diversity. Emory Douglas is a prolific artist; his one page pieces included in the Black Panther newspaper were captivating and profoundly moved individuals all over the world no matter what language they spoke. His work has influenced every generation of artists/writers/activists who found their way into his work. It is interesting to note that while Emory's finished work was incredibly elaborate looking his tools of choice were simple pen, marker, tape and paper. His palette always represented and reflected the working class.
Black Panther: The Revolutionary Art of Emory Douglas focuses on many of Emory's best works and includes forward and texts from former Panther Chairman Bobby Seale, Kathleen Cleaver, Amiri Baraka (still NJ Poet-Lauriat in my book)and Danny Glover among a few.

A definite must for anyone and everyone!!!!!!!
