I have read other books in this series with my three year old daughter, but this one really takes the monkey counting thing to the next level. Some monkeys go away, other monkeys join the group, and before you know it your little one is learning to add and subtract without a formal lesson! I always had to preface the book by telling my daughter that of course kids should never go where a grownup cannot see them in the store.

My son is 2 years old and LOVES this book! We borrowed it from the library and the first time I read it he was cracking up. This is actually unusual because normally he has to read something a few times before getting interested in it. We've been reading it every day, sometimes several times. I have fun reading and singing and he has fun listening. I'll definitely be buying this book to add to our permanent collection. I have a feeling it's going to be a favorite for years. A lot of fun!!

This is a wonder book to read to your kids and let them insert the special words at the end of the verses. My two year old grandson loves to "read along".

Found this book years ago. It has become a family favorite - showing our sons the consequences of being stubbon for stubbon's sake. "I can if I want to." is a family byword now.

My sons (ages 7 and 5) absolutely love this book. Esmerelda is a wolf in sheep's clothing who tries to convince the gullible pigs to build ever-flimsier homes ("Build a cardboard house! It's so much easier"). Detective Phineas T. Doggedly finally tracks down the BBW (Big Bad Wolf) with the help of the elderly cows who live nearby. It's a great book with captivating illustrations and characters. So far as we're concerned, it ranks right up there with Steven Kellogg's "Three Little Pigs" and "The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig". Definitely a classic -- I'm really surprised that no one has reviewed it before.

my little girl will ask me, long story or short story? depending on what time it is and how tired I am is how we decide. When it's late, we always go for a short story, and she always picks this one. My girl and my son gather on the bed and read our favorite book. We've read it so often, they'll recite the words as we read. Always puts us in a good mood and gets us ready for bed. What a joy!.

Not only is this book really boring, but my kids start jumping on the bed and go nuts every time I read it. It makes them hyper when I'm trying to get them to settle down for the evening. I'll never read it to them again.

My three year old son absolutely loves this book. And, now, thanks to having the CD, he can listen to the story on his own when I get tired of reading it over and over again. The book is simply a brightly illustated, bound version of the popular children's rhyme, but somehow it's a big hit. The CD/book combo is a great value, especially for amount of use we are getting out of it!

What is with this trend of good kid's books being followed up by seemingly rapidly produced, poorly thought out sequels? As bad as sequel's are in American cinema, I think sequels in children's books are even worse.
We loved Five Little Monkeys Jumping on a Bed. Cute pictures, the fun bouncy lines of the old kid's song, plus an opportunity to practice counting. And there is a lesson there. Kids: Don't jump on the bed. The book legitimizes the temptation, especially at the end when we see the mother taking her turn to jump on the bed. But the monkeys fall off one by one, Momma calls the doctors, and we see the monkeys lines up with there ice bags on their heads in their post-concussive stupors.
But we recently got "Five Little Monkeys Sitting in a Tree." The helpful everyday lesson for kids in this book is don't taunt a crocodile. Okay, perhaps one could generalize this and interpret it as a useful aphorism for navigating hierarchies, but doesn't quite live up to the standard of the nice, concrete "no more monkeys jumping on the bed." But beyond the pointlessness of this book, it's terrifying. Although, in the end it is revealed that the monkeys do not get eaten by the crocodile (and on subsequent readings one spots them hiding in the tree, which is slightly clever), we spend 16 of the 28 pages thinking that some or all of the mischievous monkeys have been eaten by Mr. Crocodile. We see nice colorful illustrations of distressed relatives including the frantic mother sobbing inconsolably.
I know, I've been told I take these books too seriously. Maybe your children won't be as traumatized as I was, I don't know. Maybe it's a good way to teach math. And, I suppose, also an opportunity to teach about the cruel, pitiless realities of the animal kingdom. And to teach that the inherent nature of life is suffering. Ultimately these are important lessons for the toddlers. Just a bit heartless and harrowing for my taste.

My opinion about Don't Wake Up Mama is that i think it is a very good childrens book. It is a good book for young children to start reading, it has easy words, that young kids can understand. For English, I have to read three childrens books, and write a review on each one. I think that this book is a really good, well written book. My favorite part of this book is how they are treating their mother with a happy birthday. I also thought using monkey's in place of children was a great idea. It gave the book a more interesting twist. The pictures were also great. They all went right along with the story. I highly suggest this book to other children.

A GREAT book. My 21/2 year old loves this book. He loves the pictures, and the repetition of the phrase "shhh, don't wake up mama" is fun for him to say as we read. My 6 year old loves the book, because the monkeys are so sneaky as they try to bake a surprise cake for their mother's birthday. All of the Five Little Monkey books are wonderful.
