A skeptic's search for the truth

Sherry Suib Cohen was given an assignment by her boss to research psychic phenomena, and the result was this book. From the start, she was highly skeptical of the supernatural world, but did the assignment with an open mind.

The book chronicles Sherry's research though different aspects of the genre. She visits channelers, psychics, mediums, tarot readers, tea leaf readers, astrologers, oracles, and parapsychologists. She often finds herself checking her skepticism througout the book, and reminds herself to keep an open mind. Preceding each section, she gives an in depth explanation of each phenomena, which I found enlightening. She also fills the book with her sarcastic humor, and is unabashedly skeptical, until incidents TOO SPECIFIC are brought up about her.

This book was quite fun to read because of Sherry's humorous personality, and refreshing because it was an earnest attempt by a true skeptic to delve into the world of the paranormal.

A super bonus of this book is that Sherry gives the names, phone numbers, and addresses of the psychics, astrologers, etc., so you can try them out for yourself.

It is simply fabulous

Where has this book been in my life? I cannot recommend it more highly--it's funny, charming, witty and above all--eye-opening. I'm a serious skeptic but now, like Ms. Cohen, not arrogant any more. I want to pursue her research and the telephone numbers of the practyitioners in the back of the book will let me do just that. I have rarely read a more absorbing, first person account of a person's honest exploration of somthing she laughed at previously--and now, is not laughing quite so hard any more. I ordered 10 copies of this book to give everyuone I know. What conversations it opens!

I was enjoying this book until I got to page 31, in which the author writes about someone she knew who had schizophrenia. She says, "Most important difference between a schizophrenic and a psychic? Most psychics are not disturbed people. They look like you, they look like me, they go to the opera, they go to the movies, they make meat loaf and ski at Aspen." I suffer from schizo-affective disorder (which is kind of a mix of bipolar disorder with some schizophrenia). I look like you, I go to the movies, I could ski at Aspen. This book is supposed to open people's minds! There are AMAZING anti-psychotic medications that completely change the lives of many people like me. Even someone who is suffering from schizophrenia, without medicine, is not some kind of scary creature that should be hidden from the world. We mentally ill people are people just like you. Shame on Sherry Suib Cohen. I hope this review has been enlightening.

I'm a skeptic and although I'll always question what can't be proved, this book knocked me out. The author was so fair, so fascinating, so funny! I loved it, I'm giving it to everyone I know--and I think there's other "stuff" out there--although I'm not sure what. What a good read.

This was a very entertaining book, written from a skeptic's point of view, which kept the reader in anticipation and in laughter! The author, searching for contact with her late mother, investigates numerous venues, such as astrology, channeling, tarot cards, psychics, and past life regression to name a few. After several different people whom she has contacted validate one another, the author slowly begins to embrace that "there is something else out there."

Does the author directly contact her deceased mother? No, but indirectly she does, which also brings her to a new awareness as well as opening her previously very skeptic mind. I admire her frankness and sarcasm throughout the book, which at times is very humorous indeed! The chapter on synchronicity was very insightful, as we all seem to be experiencing many synchronistic moments these days.

The author helps the reader see that there is more "out there" on the other side and if we but open our minds to other possibilities, we just may receive the answers that we have been searching for.

Very good book and I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to learn more who is also a skeptic! This book will definitely change your mind!

This book makes me look at pregnancy in a whole new beautiful way. It's very empowering and could bring out the best in anyone trying to follow some of its wisdom and guidance during this period. It makes me think differently about labor and child birth especially too; rather than fearing the pain, I look forward to the miracle that the process will bring to life.

I'm looking forward to using this book over the next 3 and final months of my pregnancy!

Deepak Chopra has an outlook on pregnancy and childbirth that assures you of the natural process and joy of bringing a new life into the world. Many books are so medical that they leave out the emotional components of this process. I found this book informative as well as very soothing.

This book takes you on a journey to the spiritual side of pregnancy and childbirth. For my second pregnancy the last thing I needed was another book telling me what stage of development my fetus was at. This book takes a look at all the deeper emotional things that are going on.

I recommend this book for everyone, especially second time moms that had a bad experience the first time. It's been pretty helpful for me, facing my fears and helping to make my own informed decisions about my pregnancy and the birth of my baby.

This book is exactly what I have been looking for.
It has empowered and inspired me in so many ways.
There are wonderful visualizations and exercises throughout the book which have helped me to connect deeply with my unborn baby and body.
Because of this book I have become much more aware of how my daily stresses affect my unborn baby and have used the suggested exercises to create a more peaceful space inside me. Nothing could make me happier.
I recommend this book to every pregnant woman. The information throughout will help you become more integrated in your mind and body and much more in-tune with your unborn baby.

Imagine the best ideas from your favorite authors read to you at a perfect pace allowing you to assimilate each before the next arrives. This audio is perfect for short meditations as no continuity is needed. It is also great as a refresher if you've listened to the original speeches. Nearly all quotes are self contained and powerful. A few lacked focus and meaning. Sometimes I couldn't figure out who was saying the quote and would have liked to research it. It is great for exposing friends to New Age, metaphysical, spiritual, and Buddhist ideas as long attention spans are not needed.

If I have listened to this production once, I've listened to it 50 times. It's incredibly thoughtful, provocative and widereaching. Not only do I hear the words of so many of the interviewees resonate in my head long after I've completed the CD, I get new understanding and nuggets to mull over with a fresh listening. I've since sought out and purchased works from many of the writers and I'm going to purchase the DVD set of the original production from which this audiobook is culled: "A Quest for Life." A goldmine 100 times over. I'm only amazed it was allowed to go out of print.

I've read a gazillion or so self-help and motivational books and articles and have listened to a few dozen more. This jewel of ageless wisdom, from the leading "success" and motivational writers and speakers today, is at the top-o-my-pile, a sure Top 5er.

In fact, this compilation led me to several thinkers whom I'd not heard of before, so went out and got more of their materials too.

If I were you, I'd buy a couple of extras to hand out to your best friends.

One of the best tapes I've listened to on spirituality and life lessons. Like a good book that you can repeat and get new things out it.

The format having a blend of comments, stories, lessons from multiple speakers may not be for everyone, but I found it something that I looked forward to listening to on my commute and missed it when I was done.

This is a must buy for anyone who enjoys reading books with a slant towards "getting what you want", "law of attraction" types and "new age" or spiritual type self help books.

This book deals specifically with "coincidence", describing how many people don't realize there are reasons behind these synchronistic experiences. This book informs you how these events are not JUST coincidence, and how there are ways to fulfill your desires and create the life you want by paying attention and acting on them.

The writing is an easy comfortable read, is very much in-depth and there are suggested exercises for those who like to put action to what they read.

---*** THE BOTTOM LINE ***---
This is a must buy. I have read only four of this author's many books, but this is my favorite by far. I have re-read it many times.
This book is very in-depth and is just as applicable for a "newbie" to this genre or someone who has "read them all".

You will not be disappointed in any way if you get this book.

This is one of my most dog-earred books. Long before the so-called-secret came around, Dr. DeePak Chopra was writing about the science of vibrational levels, about the frequency of objects, about the power of thought and meditation. For many decades Dr. Chopra has lived the life, walked the talk and written the volumes from the most acceptable viewpoint of a scientist. He seems to be ahead of his times with a large portion of the planet certainly coming to the same focus. This book truly is an act of courage and an act of love. The reader will ponder life from a wonderfully fresh perspective, and will soon realize there is no such thing as coincidence. Coincidence is but a mirror we draw to us through our individual frequencies of the law of attraction. This book deserves far more stars than 5!

In my continuing quest to unearth the best authors who impact the mind, body and spirit, Deepak Chopra has become a favorite. I received the CD set of The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire some time ago and zipped through all five CDs. I remember telling a friend that the CDs seem like Deepak is speaking Farsi (the national language of India, his home country). A few weeks ago I continued listening to the CDs and all of a sudden, ILLUMINATION! I can actually understand the powerful messages from the author, WOW!
As you focus, Chopra's message to the listener is consistent: Pay attention to the signals in your life to manifest your true destiny. The author provides basic guided meditations, unique prayers and stories interwoven into his narrative to inspire the listener to look within for all answers, for this is where GOD dwells.
This five-CD set requires acute attention, interaction, intention and action to reap the most benefits. Much work is required and the benefits gained will be immeasurable. So take the journey to "change the way you look at things - and the things you look at will change."

Really enjoyed listening to this LIVE CD! When I listened, I felt like I was in the audience. This is very inspiring as well as very entertaining. This is a less formal CD by Dr. Chopra than the non live CD's, a joy to listen to and I will continue to listen to this CD over and over! In my opinion, ALL of Deepak Chopra's CD's are wonderful. I own over 12 of the CD's and all of the cassettes that Dr. Chopra has ever written. Since 1995, I have listened to Dr. Chopra's audio books and have read 6 of his books as well. All of them I still own and refer to.

This is the first CD I purchased that helped me to understand what was going on in my own mind. It has a little humor, a little bit of science and the other side reality. A little hard to hear at times because it is an open discussion but well worth listening to if you have ever experienced a coincidence of any sort. I now expect coincidences everyday with a deeper understanding of staying connected to source all the time.

Deepak Chopra is delightful to listen to. His anecdotes are warm and humorous like his voice, and he pops in laugh-out-loud one liners even though his presentation is anything but dry. Here he digresses at the very beginning of his talk to wax lyrical about how we manifest according to the tenets of Vedanta, and I think, uh-oh, I've had as much of The Secret as I can take. But it's not like that at all; the wisdom of the ancients and the zero point field and a healthy dose of quantum physics and contemporary medical technology all make for a new perspective on a bit of a tired topic.
He stresses the importance of science proving spirituality to get the myths out of the way and the truth demonstrable to all. Pearls of wisdom pop out all over the place, like where is memory stored? - in the brain or in the quantum field (Akashic record)? What is the nature of past, present and future, and does it all exist simultaneously? Is God a dead white guy? How do we really manifest our reality, and where is it stored before we pluck it out of the ether? What is the nature of our past lives and karma, and lots of other little gems that I've forgotten but I'll pick up again because this is one of my favourite car CD's for driving.
Enjoy. It's a good price too.

I was aware that I wanted some guidance to focus on the spiritual aspects of my child's development. This book offers such a guide. It is not meant to be the concise book on parenting. Parenting, like everything in life, is a continuing journey of discovery, and different books and resources provide for different areas of that development. This book has heaps of ideas for incorporating simple activities in your life to introduce spiritual principles to your family. The information was incredible for developing my own awareness so I'm very excited about sharing it with my child, partner, and extended family - and learning even more myself in the process!

I'm generally not one for self help books because I think the majority of them are money making endeavors that offer little real help. I've heard about Chopra for years, perhaps the most known doctor in America besides Dr. Spock. I've picked up his books many times to be greeted by the perfect family shot of him, his wife and handsome son. For some reason I never could bring myself to read him. So finally, I bit the bullet and read The Seven Laws for Parents.

I feel guilty criticizing a book with such noble intentions. I mean, who can criticize a book that espouses spending thoughtful time with your children and family, encourages being thoughtful and considerate, and asks us all to foster our spiritual being and self? For this message, I certainly do not fault Chopra. No one would. But do I think that he has anything unique to say or that by summarizing our lives into seven laws all our parenting woes are gone? Certainly not. These books have a popular appeal because they are simply written, teach good values, and provide some concrete advice for parents. But somewhere along the line, I feel betrayed by the "industry" of Chopra, his institutes, seminars and programs. This book contains many fairly obvious points - I guess I'd call it "parenting 101 light." Nothing bad about it, but nothing special either. Perhaps the word "oversimplification" sums it up best. It's a 20 minute read at best and could just as easily be found in Cosmo Magazine as in book form. It's the reader's digest version or the classic comics of real literature, but at least its message is worthwhile. Don't get me wrong -- parents can benefit from following the practices in this book. The success of this book and his other 7 habit book shows that many are just looking for a quick 7 step solution to solving their problems. This the book will not do.

I really wanted to love this book. It's beautifully designed with gorgeous photographs, inspiring poses, and lofty prose. My wife and I pored over it's pages with anticipation, but when we attempted the positions, we were frustrated by scanty instructions, repetition, and fluff. Both of us are experienced in yoga, though not advanced, and most of the poses were either too tame or too difficult.

The book looks nice on the coffee table, but we're still looking for a good book on partner yoga.

I am a longtime fan of Deepak Chopra's career, and despite the editorial review listed above, I found Daughters of Joy to contain great inspiration. It is definitely an inspirational novel with lots of lessons contained in the story--the book ends with fifty pages of direct question and answers about the issue of love and personal growth. So if you expect straight romance, this isn't the novel for you. However, I don't think that was the author's purpose. This is a direct, attempt to confront society's need for love as a saving grace, and the hero does ssomething not a lot of men whoud dare to do: he accepts a woman as his teacher and guide. For that alone, I think Duahgters of Joy is worthwhile. I wound up admiring the book and was glad I read it. Thank you, Dr. Chopra for continuing to get the message out.

Apparently, there was once a PBS-special program
called QUEST: DISCOVERING YOUR HUMAN POTENTIL . . . I
unfortunately never caught it when it was on the air, but was
lucky enough to be able to track down a cassette with
the same title.

Edited by Deepak Chopra, it featured Steven Covey, Thomas
Moore, Bernie Siegel, David Whyte, and Marianne Williamson,
along with Chopra . . . they all spoke about the mind-body
connection and shared their ideas on how to harness your
inner power.

With speakers this fine, I came away with many useful
ideas . . . my only disappointment was that the program
did not label the speakers either before or after they had
something to say.

Yet I believe I was able to identify many of the speakers . . . in
addition, I gleaned these tidbits:

[Siegel] If you're stuck, then change your attitude toward life. If
you want to be happy, choose happiness.

[Siegel] Most people say, "My day will come." When they realize
they have a limited number of days, that's when they get into action.

[Williamson] Life isn't about so much about making ourselves
better, as it is about relinquishing all the illusions and the blocks
to greatness that are bred into us in the world.

[Williamson] Buckminster Fuller said, "Geniuses are just people
who had good mothers."

[Siegel] When you do allow love into your life, you have a longer,
healthier life. You are rewarded by the fact. For example, when
you save a bird, you don't expect a "thank you" in return.

[Siegel, quoting advice he got from Ashley Montagu] To be more
loving, act as if you're more loving.

Taken from a PBS series this is the first of three tapes to come from that effort. It is simple the best compilation of thought provking and stimulating ideas on tape that I have found. I am a counselor who works with adolescents and I am always looking for some way to inspire, motivate, or encourage young adults to begin the process of self knowledge and self awarness and to see beyond themselves into the world they are about to enter as adults. So many tapes are too simplistic or too complicated but this series seem to intrigue these individuals as no other tape I have used has been able to do. It is a series that anyone from early adolescents to geriatrics will find extremely valuable and thought provoking. No schmoltzy solutions, no formulaic set answers to life--just wonderful stimulating ways to encouarage the listener to examine who they are, what they feel and where they want to go. You will listen to this series over and over and will hear something new each and every time.

The Quest audio cassettes are a fine compliment to books by the guest speakers. In some cases the cassettes provide nuances, insights, and clarification not possible in the printed text form. Stephen Covey for example has a deep raspy almost mischievous laugh when he discusses inauthenticity weakening relationships of trust. His sense of humor isn't readily apparent in The Seven Steps... bestseller, but here it is on this compilation. And Thomas Moore's few comments on narcisism are wonderfully refined and to the point, so much so that he does a better job conveying this somewhat difficult concept in speaking than in printed form i.e. "Care of the Soul" where there isn't the same impact. A few of the speakers are too New Agey and fluffy for my tastes but Moore and Covey give the nearly one hundred minutes of listening time great depth and texture.

This piece is so heavy and so thought provoking that you have to absorb it slowly... just great. It takes you on a spiritual journey into fundamental questions about life and spirituality. But what really makes this compilation of ideas so good is that it offers you real answers, real solutions to your problems and human weaknesses that you can use. Listening to this tape is spiritual therapy. A classic, like nothing you've experienced before.

Deepak has, in my opinion, written a transparent and empowering book on the reality that is just beyond our physical ability to see. The knowledge contained within this book is not new, rather it is hidden wisdom built up by the ancients over millennia, that Dr Deepak has sought to communicate to a wider audience through this book. The belief that we are all energy and interconnected on a level higher than our physical form, has been conveyed by many in the past, with limited success. Dr Deepak's approach differs greatly from others in that he is not encapsulating his words of truth in religious dogma or informing the kind of fragmention that often occurs when one seeks to own something that was created and visioned by many. As one who came to the book fully converted to the 'oneness' concept, many of the points made by Dr Cheepak were easily digestable to me. I feel that the a-religious style adopted by him, coupled with the absense of gargon and easily transferable ideas presented in the book makes it an easy and extremely empoering book to read.

Biology in Western science has no capacity for the concept of soul because it is so embedded in a materialistic model Chopra shows us how close quantum physics is getting to understanding the soul, more expansively spirit, and how that can be applied in the biological model. It is only until we can grasp the praciticality of spirituality and bridge the gap between the realms of religion and science that we will understand the true meaning of health As usual Chopra does a great job laying out the science on the lattice work of Vedanta

Expressing the Conscious Universe is how we are...it's what we do. Everyone is an expression of doing whatever we are doing at a given point in time, and at the moment I am typing this review sharing my experience of where my consciousness lives.

If the ocean is an expression of the vastness of our consciousness and each wave that ebbs and flows in an out of existence represents our life, then when our life ends it goes back into the all of our existence to form a new wave of consciousness again, and each time it blends with the all of everything there is and has been forever, then the next time we are able to bring ourselves up to another level of understanding that enriches each of us and is a benefit to the whole of creation.

Just a note...when Deepak shares at the end of this lesson that when we are looking at anything from our view in our consciousness such as a flower, or a tree or a beautiful sunset or our Beloved...that it is God seeing Himself or Herself through His eyes and that is all.I was so moved by these words that I listened over and over again so I could experience that moment of realization...beautiful and thought provoking.
