With regard to the references to autism in this book, Portia Iversen's son Dov, the boy featured in "Strange Son" and Tito Mukhopadhyay are included in this book. Dov was the young man who was actively listening although he was nonverbal during his early years and Tito Mukhopadhyay was the gifted poet/author who has severe autism.
I want to add that the claim made in this book that people with autism "go inside of themselves" and "don't respond to the outside world" simply isn't true. Dov himself said he was listening at all times and Tito Mukhopadhyay was acutely aware of his environment.
Autism is a sensori-neurobiological condition that affects sensory processing and communication. For individuals with severe autism as these two young men have, communication is severely impacted. People with autism are generally acutely aware of their environments; however, the sensory processing issues can create false impressions. For people on the autism spectrum (and it IS a continuum), sensory input can be confusing and hard to separate into discrete units. When a person is on overload, it is not uncommon for them to appear non/unresponsive. That is when the person is "coming even," trying to tone out the overload and the feeling of being overwhelmed.
Communication is an inherent part of all individuals; it is listening to people on the spectrum that hopefully will create a more tolerant world and put false claims about autism permanently to rest.

There are a very few books which give a spiritual insight in such simple terms.
This is definetely one among the best of such books. It is as interesting as
a good fiction, with a very simple and effective message in each chapter.
The author makes each of the message reach straight into the heart of the
reader by the style he has used for writing.

ONE OF DR CHOPRA'S BEST CD'S EVER! IT WORKS FOR ME!Review Date: 2007-06-21
1) It is like Dr. Chopra is standing next to you and comforting you.
2) He speaks of ways that the body within will heal you and how to concetrate on healing and then the healing will come to you (or you will begin to feel better).
3) Dr. Chopra speaks so soothingly that I really enjoy this.
4) This is a SUPERB CD to listen to when you are ill or stressed out. I personally listen to it when I have a bad cold, flu, or a headache, etc.
I started with the cassette version of this in 2003. So impressed with the cassette version, that I ordered this in the CD version. (Prefer the CD's to cassettes). In my opinion, ALL of Deepak Chopra's CD's are wonderful. I own over 12 of the CD's and all of the cassettes that Dr. Chopra has ever written. Since 1995, I have listened to Dr. Chopra's audio books and have read 6 of his books as well. All of them I still own and refer to.

Awakening To Higher and Healing TruthsReview Date: 2004-10-11
While I will be the first to admit that I don't take everything Deepak Chopra says at face value. Often I feel he is an excellent "compiler" of ideas but not necessarily very spiritually evolved himself (which he has implied himself on programs I have). He is not only excellent at compiling but he is very adept at bridging the ancient with the modern, the sages with the Quantum physicists in a way that anyone can understand. For this alone I think he deserves deep praise.
I've used this program to help me reconnect with my true self and go within, to remind myself of deeper aspects of myself and those around me.
It's a nice transition to use for meditation as well, especially if you're stressed and need to be eased in gently. Of course I'd recommend doing Yoga for that purpose as well or even playing this tape while doing gentle poses to help create an atmosphere of centeredness while reminding one of these truths.
Highly recommended!

Several books in oneReview Date: 2004-01-01
All the interviewees are answering the same questions, which gets a bit monotonous after a while, but fortunately, we get more than the interviews themselves. We get to know something of the interviewer, of the interviewees, and of the process of tracking them down. The book is part spiritual autobiography, part travel memoir, and partly the story of the author's attempts, successful and unsuccessful, to get his interviews and write his book. It's a bit of a jumble, but it works, and turns out to be quite readable. Elliott is an appealing guy, sincere, open-minded yet opinionated, unpretentious; and it's a pleasure to spend time in his company as he tries to learn more about Jesus and about how different people view Jesus.
Mostly successful examination...Review Date: 2003-07-15
The book is not without its problems, though. For one, the interviews have a ring of similarity to them, since all the interviewees are answering from a boilerplate. For another, the folksy musings between the interviews create a tone that at times is hard to pin down. I suspect the author is sincere, but some of these scenes -- like the one where images on a Last Supper painting are speaking to him -- seem unintentionally comic. It's as if he has temporarily detoured into Hunter S. Thompson's Las Vegas.
Overall, I enjoyed the book and would recommend it for spiritual seekers. It has some insights, and an ultimately peaceful message, that will inspire and stimulate.

The writing captures each turn in Elliott's journey, allowing each of us to find Jesus through these people--including through Elliott himself.

Love's Spiritual EcstasyReview Date: 2006-10-01
Deepak Chopra presents classic poems from Rumi, Hafiz, Kabir, Mirabai and Rabindranath Tagore to explore immortal love in devotional poetry. These poems are filled with love and longing for the divine. I was especially happy to find poems by the Indian princess Mirabai and always love reading Rumi's thoughts.
"Sunlight spreads over a face in the shadows
Like the flower of truth beginning to unfold." ~Rumi
This book is born of Deepak Chopra's own love for God and his translations embody the joy and lyrical heart of each original poem. His understanding of deep spiritual mysteries in no doubt encourages a deeper understanding and that translates into a much more beautiful reading experience.
He captures the depths of Mirabai's longings in "Where Love Is First," where she almost seems to long for the next life with such intensity, we feel as if her soul will fly from her body to be with God.
"Take me to that place where no one can go
Where death is afraid
And swans alight to play
On the overflowing lake of love."
A brief introduction to each poet is included to give an added historical perspective. What is especially beautiful is that I can hear Deepak Chopra's voice reading me the poems as I sink into contemplation. Through reading this book of poems you can discover why a love for God is a much more lasting ecstasy.
I especially love his translation of "Distant Words" by Rabindranath Tagore where the moon sends us the love letters of God. It feels as close to the original translation as I can personally remember. Thoughts from poets of the past mingle with the love in Deepak's own soul and this creates a memorable collection of spiritual beauty.
"The Soul in Love" would make a perfect gift for someone you love who has an interest in spirituality and a desire to know how poets of the past have explored the light radiating from their hearts. This is truly a spiritual treasure!
