Deepak Chopra is an excellent teacher.

This is another example of enlightenment.

I was hoping that Chopra might turn over a new leaf, but he's churned out another meaningless book. It would appear he is paid for every time he uses the words 'quantum', 'energy', 'vibration', 'intelligence', and gets a bonus check for using them in vague contexts. Here's an example:
"Underlying our material being there exists what might be called a "quantum mechanical body," which is pure process, energy, and intelligence. Since the quantum mechanical body determines what the quantum body will be like, it is in the quantum mechanical body that we'll find the origins of chronic fatigue."

Trying to distill anything concrete, meaningful, or useful out of this book has only given me boundless quanta of new source of fatigue.

Not a cure, but a great help

Don't listen to this tape for a cure for cronic fatigue, rather as a way to get more energy without medications. If only one of the many tips he suggests gives you more energy, it's worth the money. It has certainly made me more aware of my eating and sleeping habits.

A good book for those wanting help with a minor problem

This book is a good, short book with practical advice that is easy to follow if you have a relatively minor problem with fatigue. It is not intended as a work for those with CFIDS and it is not a replacement for seeing a doctor if you have a serious problem. Also, all claims in books such as this should be taken with a grain of salt. This book does not set out to prove the usefulness of the techniques described, but gives anecdotal evidence to suggest how they might help. Give it a try. Or don't. I found it helpful, but that's me. We're all individuals.

Always a wonderful writer

As with all Dr. Chopra's books, I found this one to be extremely easy to read and exceptionally well written. Using the primary idea that "Attention has power", Dr. Chopra asks us to begin using our power by bringing our attention to key issues in our lives - both physical and mental - in order to tap into our natural boundless energy. Although the author touches on the issue of chronic fatigue syndrome, this book is not for individuals suffering from that illness (although many of the principles would certainly benefit them) but rather is for the person without a specific diagnosed condition who remembers fondly a time when they had enough energy to tackle their day and not have to nap on the couch before dinner!

The reader begins with an overview of issues surrounding fatigue in our modern world and then takes a dosha quiz to determine their "type" according to Ayurvedic medicine. Having read several books on the subject of the Ayurvedic philosophy, I have to say that this was the best quiz to determine dosha I have seen thus far. Subsequent chapters have various recommendations for specific doshas when applicable. Dr. Chopra centers his text on several "Primary Energy Principles" which are statements emphasizing the connection of the body/mind and the fact that we derive our energy from the abundant energy resources of nature; lack of energy indicates an imbalance or block in this flow.

As with any Ayurvedic resource, the recommendations for overcoming fatigue are incredibly holistic. Beginning with key principles surrounding diet (by dosha) and good digestion, Dr. Chopra also encompasses issues of stress reduction (using breathing meditation, yoga postures, alternate nostril breathing exercises, and self-massage), tapping into the natural rhythms of the day (principles of good sleep, limiting high-focus or stimulating activities after dinner and before bed, getting fresh air and sunshine, getting exercise with recommendations by dosha), and paying attention not only to the health of the physical environment surrounding you but also of your mental and spiritual well-being. I found this last chapter to be particularly profound as I know many people who take to heart a "fitness plan" and never stop to examine why they do not experience passion or joy in their personal pursuits; they have stopped growing as people and the stagnation affects their bodies in profound ways despite their surface "care" of it.

If fatigue is an issue for you (is it not an issue for anyone?), this book is a recommended purchase as you will refer to it again and again as you seek to regain health and vitality in your everyday life.

The Child of the Dawn is a book worth reading and then re reading. It is a story about a young boy in search of adulthood and the power that comes with being an adult. After an extensive search through out the countryside, the young boy discovers that what he is searching for can only be found from within. He must turn to himself to complete his search. Although not required, reading "The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success" by the author's father, will help you to better understand this book.

I liked this book. I found it suitable for any religion. At first, I thought it was going to be too "New Age" for me, then I decided I was being too closed minded and relaxed, just took it in. Soon I was gaining in a positive way. I will reread this for a pick me up. Also, I copied several phrases from the book to use as reminders of daily encoragement. I wanted to give it a 5, however couldn't because I am not sure I would feel totally comfortable sharing or gifting this book to just anyone. It does require some basic free thinking and application of one's own faith journey to be successful, I would be afraid some wouldn't get past some of the open ended concepts of the journey...maybe not, maybe I am still too closed minded, read it and find out for yourself, let us know!

If you think that other books on this subject are too heavy and long - this is the book for you. Being around 130 pages, with big text - that's a first! This book is so much more then the exploring of a young boy, much more then morality and surviving in the sense of food and sleep. Set out in the poor persons every day life this book makes it simplistic and easy to grasp the real point with it. You get your own roots shaken a bit, your values re-set. At the end of this you have a sense of what real power is, what it truly means to be rich. Rich in the soul, not measured by money.

Being an admirer of his father's work, I bought the younger Chopra's book with high expectations. Alas, Guatama Chopra did not inherit his father's gift of prose or profound wisdom. His story was void of originality and failed to capture the reader's interest, since this concept has seen many incarnations. Unfortunately, this is a case of a decendent riding on the mighty coattails of his successful father. Hopefully, with age, maturity, and wisdom, Mr. Chopra would grow into his identity and improve his written and oral communication skills. Having seen his work as an anchor for Channel One News, I have to say that Mr. Chopra has a long journey ahead of him.

Sacred Verses is very abstract. It is a recording of selected ancient Veda literature translated into English. The verses are very simple. I could have just read the Vedas in book form. I do not receive any benefit from listening to the Vedas on CD form other than becoming familiar with the content of the Vedas. I would not have purchased this CD had I had a chance to preview it first. It is useless knowledge unless you have the intent to study the Vedas. I had initially purchased the CD set to learn about the Vedas, but all I have learned is that the Vedas are simplistic prayers (my prayers are more meaningful). There is nothing to really benefit from listening to this CD set.

Chopra, however, presents a clear voice and diction.

I was disappointed to discover Dr. Chopra's commentary throughout all three CD's. From the write up, I had expected educational commentary in the first parts followed by a more relaxing meditative series. It was not relaxing or meditative because one must listen intently to understand him and the three CD's are almost entirely background music for his educational commentary. Wish I could get my money back.

Meditation Intro

Review Date: 2007-05-13
If you're practicing Transcendental Meditation and have gone to a few lectures on TM, maybe even a residence course or two, you've probably been introduced to the Bhagavad Gita. Deepak tells the story of Arjuna and the conflict facing him as he goes to the battle field, the role of Krishna and ties this all together in a profound revelation of what the transcendent field is. It is an excellent refresher of some of the lectures given by Maharishi. Of course, Maharishi conveys the story from a different level of consciousness, the God level. Deepak tells the story more from the "awake" field of consciousness which is effective for non-meditators. He conveys the deeper meaning behind the stroy to great effect nevertheless. The means soooo much more, however, if you learn the practice of TM. This reading is also good for sidhas too as Deepak also brings out some pointers for this practice as well. This is also an excellent CD even if you'r not a practicing TMer. Deepak teaches meditation to the listener by using the breath as a mantra. The only drawback is the background sitar music. It's ok just for the first few times, but Deepak should say that in actual practice, the only condition for meditation is practicing it in silence.

I bought this title after I had read the thoroughly enjoyed Volume #1 of the series. This collection was, in a word, disappointment. The weakest link in the book is the writing. The stories are NOWHERE "Authentic" (Parashurama stopping his carnage after coming abreast a child?? Looks like a 'politically-correct' mashup for the non-Indian audience) as claimed, but at least the first volume had a brilliant and imaginative script. Here, the writers seems to have lost steam after being overtly creative for the first round.

My second peeve is with the artwork. The artwork just does not measure up to the first volume. Period. Nothing more to say.

I would recommend that readers first look through the issue in the libraries and then decide if they want to buy.

Even though i thought the first issue was so much better, i still enjoyed reading about Pashuram and Garuda. Its a great issue to read for fun and even great for kids, so theyre not stuck in front of the tv rotting away their brains. If you bought the first and was so blown away, like I was.. just letting you know you might now find this one as amazing but finish reading it because its a bit lengthier in story material but i think its worth the purchase and to be added to your comic/book collection, this is an awesome choice to go with.

Liked this one... but prefered the first :)

More mythological stories of Indian Gods. I like the idea of being able to learn from the indian mythology in this format, and the stories chosen are nice. Anyway, I much prefered the first one INDIAN AUTHENTIC, because the pace and feeling of the comic book was more beautiful and more beautifully written. In this comic book I enjoyed the story of Parashuram, because I loved how it was told (very much like the pace and feeling of the first INDIAN AUTHENTIC), and the definition of what a monster is and how it is made.

This is the 2nd "kit" I've purchased whereby everything but the book and CD are superflous. The information placed on the flash cards could've been included in the book. I'm assuming this is a maketing trick to lower cognitive dissonance when purchasing shlock like this. The oil...no where does the kit tell you what's in the bottle. And forget about the "dream diary"...wasted pages with not enough room for notes, and the same "inspirations" on every page of the journal.

It is insulting to produce material that is clearly...CLEARLY...designed to create barriers for consumers to return goods. You see, once you remove the packaging...there's an open CD...oil...you're stuck with the kit regardless of the contents. You've been warned.

This book begins with a narrative written by Dr. Chopra. His words were humble as he noted that he dared to tamper with the wisdom of Tagore. When I passed through his words and started reading the poetry of Tagore, I was mesmerized. The poetry is not really about death, but the immortality of life which begins each day when the eyes are opened and ends each day with the onset of sleep. It is a book which addresses how we, as humans, can look at what is going on around us and then decide what choice(s)to make. What is so incredible is that, each day, we are given the chance to make new choices for the same old problems. (Just like in the movie GroundHog Day starring Bill Murrey.) The trick is to selectively forget how yesterday's choices were unsuccessful and painful as we accept, within our bones, not our minds, our new choices. Conversely there are those of us who refuse to allow the beauty of a successful choice to preceed us as we broadcast our success(es) in bright primary colors. In our glee, we stamp out the memory of that natural process which allowed us to step into the universe and be filled with the knowledge which is aready there; knowledge which is just patiently waiting to be used.

Good but don't give up Tagore's Gitanjali

Most of the poems in this book were translated by Tagore himself with the help of Yeats. On the Shores of Eternity complements rather than replaces Gitanjali. Especially interesting are the fragments from Tagore's notebooks which are not in Gitanjali. E.g. "Words cling to the dead like dust / Silence washes their souls." Tagore's poetry still shows him to be a worthy recipient of the Nobel Prize for literature.

On the other hand, I was not impressed by the introduction by Chopra ... whether it is helpful to you will depend upon your background in mysticism and literature. He makes too much of Tagore's friendly relationship with death - St. Francis wrote of "our Sister Bodily Death". Tagore's mysticism is in the long tradition of the collective world - east or west - his uniqueness is the superb poetry in which he shares his experience; this is not the emphasis of the introduction. But who cares - the poems are well worth pausing over.

Having heard Deepak speak a number of times I found this in some ways a surprising book. I had not realised that the Rishi he speaks of is the Maharishi Maresh Yogi - 'the Beatles Maharishi'.I found the book a slow starter, found however that my efforts were rewarded. The Net has a number of sites which offer somewhat critical comment on those refered to as 'gurus'. I feel that Deepak's motive for this book can only be to sincerely chart his path for us. Not an easy book - not an immediate book - intellectual and of its best use to those perhaps like me who had knowledge of Yoga and Ayurveda before coming across this author. Like all good communicators, Deepak's best purpose is served in being a codifier, populariser and proponent of these philosphies. He is honest - some of the thoughts are his - but most come from ancient sources. His service is to provide them to us in an interesting and digestible way

Please read this book so you can expirience a real fraud and the snake oil seller this man really is.The books starts out interestingly enough and certainly captured my attention -I had already read his first book and Quantum Healing and thought of them as the real thing until I read this one. Its starts out as an interesting autobiography, goes into his "spiritual awakening" and once he has your attention he begins talking about the supernatural abilities the yogis have. He talks about how yogis can levitate, actually he says they have "levitating contests" -I'm not kidding- like a form of Olympics of levitation. What evidence does he show -non what so ever-. After this I realized what a quack this man is. He has a billion books, a "healing center" in San Diego -and it's not free or cheap- and a lot of people that buy his "self-help" advice that make him rich.
I have to admit I believe in yoga and its unique health benefits but this man is using and abusing people to make himself rich. His autlandish claims of levitation contests through meditation and other things like that are just a pack of lies. Please don't waste your good money on a fraud like Deepak Chopra.

Complex concepts made simple

For someone who loves reading books on metaphysical and spiritual topics, I have hardly read any of Deepak Chopra's work - apart from one of his fiction books, SynchroDestiny is the first of his books that I've delved into! Luckily, it was a good introduction to Deepak and his style of writing, so I'll definitely be investing in some more of his books soon :).

This particular book focuses on the phenomenon of synchronicities - those apparent coincidences that illustrate the larger forces at work in our lives. As the book's blurb states, "...there is no such thing as a meaningless coincidence."

The first part of SynchroDestiny focuses on the science that lies behind synchronicities and the Law Of Attraction. If you're looking for a simple, clear explanation of some of the principles of quantum physics and nonlocal intelligence (the field), this is it. Deepak is definitely very skilled in explaining complex concepts in a very user-friendly manner! This section of the book also goes deeply into the concepts of coincidence and intention.

The second part of the book is devoted to the practical exploration of the concepts. These exercises are centred around the process of meditation, using mantras to focus the mind. I found these exercises interesting and useful, although I altered the process of meditation described to fit with my own style of meditating. Deepak's methods may work for him and for others, but I found them to disruptive to my own rhythm, and I therefore had much more success when I integrated his techniques with my own. Don't be afraid to experiment a bit to find what works for you - there is no "one size fits all" size of meditating!

Throughout the book, Deepak makes reference to the ancient Eastern wisdom of Vedanta, which describes much of what quantum physics is only now discovering regarding how the universe functions. In this respect, it is also incredibly interesting to read SynchroDestiny's Appendix A, in which Deepak outlines the principles of the Hermetic tradition, which has its origins in ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt, to illustrate how these principles match those of the Vedanta. Reading these ancient teachings demonstrates clearly that the Law Of Attraction is not new!

Overuse of the EPR Paradox

Review Date: 2005-03-20
The Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen experiment is often touted as an example of the bizarre nature of quantum mechanics: two elementary particles with complementary properties (spins of +1/2 and -1/2) are separated by an infinite distance (well, not really infinite, but infinite for all practical purposes). We do not know (in fact, neither do the particles themselves) which particle has which property, but only that if one particle is measured to have a spin of +1/2, the other one will be found to have the opposite spin (-1/2).

After this separation, we measure the spins of both the particles simultaneously and find that the spins are as expected. The only catch is, since the particles themselves don't 'know' what spin thy have, how did they coordinate between themselves (at a rate faster than the speed of light) and decide which of the properties each will exhibit? This sort of communication is termed a 'nonlocal' connection.

Deepak Chopra really goes to town with this nonlocal connection in his book Synchrodestiny, employing it to 'explain' such phenomena as how the human body performs the various metabolic activities so that one can enjoy a jog at the beach, how cognition is effected by the "'phase and frequency locking in' of the firing patterns of individual neurons in different parts of the brain," and so on.

I stopped reading Synchrodestiny after about a hundred pages or so. The problem with these books which attempt to draw legitimacy from science [a plague on your house, Capra, for starting the whole thing ;-)] is that you already have to be a believer to get anything positive from them. If you read them with an open mind, you end up shaking your head in skepticism at sentences like these, which have to be taken on faith, since there is no way to prove or disprove them:We are both local and nonlocal, an individual pattern emerging from nonlocal intelligence, which is also part of everyone and everything else ...The personal, local part of the soul exists at the quantum level.

This is a masterpiece from a master. Of all of Deepaks books, I found this to be the most practical. If you are new to these paradigms or an ardent practioner you will find the way that Deepak unpacks the somewhat mysticism of this subject so refreshing. Yes there are other books on the topic, yet this one is the one that inspired me to take take action through daily rituals. Becoming even more aware of synchronicity and harnessing this power is the greatest gift you may receive. Thanks Deepak, I continue to follow my bliss and inspire youth to their full potential. Until we meeet again my firend, all that is divine in me honours all that is divine in you.

This was a very hard book for me to read. I read mostly non fiction, and have admired and learned from Dr. Chopra's knowledge of the mind-body-spirit connections. I'm not clear as to how much of the material in Lords of Light is factually correct, since there are glaring mistakes, as some have mentioned. And lots of typos in a book published for world wide consumption. The authors do take a courageous leap into the realms of evil; I found myself feeling like I had fallen into a mudhole. The pace of the book is similar to suspense novels; even though it was making me very uncomfortable, I couldn't put it down, hoping that things would begin to make sense. Bottom line, the authors must have been drinking more coffee than the protaganist, and writing in some free association form. There is too much going on that is not explained, too many leaps of faith that the reader is asked to endure. The good/bad thing is, the book has sent my beliefs into a downward spiral. I am not clear if Dr. Chopra really believes some of the things Solomon and Rakhel(who have the role of teachers/elders) say. Especially te part saying that life is for being human, it isn't good to be too good...he seems to be saying it's fine to steal and lie a little, hey , it's "just the human condition"....For a man who is known world wide for his wisdom and teachings, this feels like the shadow side of Depak having its 2 minutes in the spotlight.

Finally, a book by Chopra I liked...

Apart from his self help series of books, I find this earlier work of "Spiritual Fiction" to be unique and easy to read. I can only hope that the genre can keep getting better from here.

Not bad

This new genre of "spiritual fiction" has many more misses than hits. I would call this one a near hit. Near because it starts out great and had me right with it until the last few chapters, then I sorta lost interest. The story takes some odd turns and although it does make some important points, it seemed to miss others. If you are interested in a good spiritual novel, check out "The Destiny of Miro" by Julie Rae Rickard. It is a great combination of spiritual ideas in a fictional format. A great read.

This is a good book to read. I bought my copy when it first came out a few years ago and found it hard to put down. I am neither a outspoken critic or a "follower" of Deepak and I found this novel worthy of merit on its own , without making general reference to the authors past work in non-fiction and in fiction.

It sort of cleverly grabs you from the first few pages and beckons you with bare hints that an unfolding mystery is sure to follow should you continue reading. I found myself easily identifying with the religious and idealogical morass the protagonist experiences, and it seems revelant to the day and age in which we live.

Thick, compact and easily readable (to be fair, I did find some parts overly-breezy) without being overly simplistic or pollyannish, it provides an engaging reading experience. The author takes care to not produce something overly dense, causing the reader to become bored and lose interest; choosing not to bog and mire the reader down with sidebar note fuzzy pseudo religio-philisophical concepts.

This book could be just what the Dr. ordered to ease the mind and achieve a serene calm from the ripple effects of an increasingly troubled and chaotic world as we search to seek out and re-adjust our position in it.

Let it take you on a journey of the fantastic! I do not typically enjoy reading, but I found Lords of Light to be a very intriguing and very enticing book that includes fantasy and wonder! It also includes historical facts that have been blended into the writing, but you don't realize that you are learning while you are following the fantastic story of good and evil, dark and light...determining what is good and what is evil is the true creative twist Deepak Chopra creates in this fantiastic novel. Try it, you'll love it!
