Wendy is a HOOT...we just laughed through the whole interview and we and our listeners felt like we'd related and knew the author and the book by the time (an hour later) that we were finished.
This is the sort of book you pass around to friends and give to pals who are having their 60th birthday. One of the great things about women getting older is that they really care about their friends and this book is a perfect illustration of that.
Hurry up and write the 70th birthday book, Wendy...I'm approaching it FAST.

Wisdom of fathersReview Date: 2008-03-02
This has led to the demise of the tradition of learning from your father where a child would learn from his father as they both worked on the family business.
On a personal side, when my own father was visiting me, he found this book on my bookshelf and liked it a lot. Now he is about to pass away and I am reading this book to get a handle on this situation.

Handling Persecution by FaithReview Date: 2006-07-09
Hal had discussed how tha faith of POW's had enabled them to withstand brainwashing by their captors. Except that this is America we're talking about and not North Korea!
Hal also witnessed about how God had striken dead a college professor who had tried to block him from speaking on his campus. I had looked back at my life and I also could see that God has dispatched several of my enemies to the grave-including some big name politicains or their relatives. I began looking in the Bible and could see a precidence for this in Scripture. God is no respector of persons, the Bible says.
Also the thing about Moses having lived in obscurity as a shepherd for 40 years after having killed an Egyptian government official and having fled Egypt as being a time of testing and character formation, also impressed me. Somwhow, I don't believe that God is through with my life. Maybe I will live to fight better another day?!

Instruction on Spiritual WarfareReview Date: 2004-06-29
His discussion on the faith and works issue is helpful. Along similar lines he talks about resting from works and not being subject to the law.
On the Providence of God: "God never allows anything to happen in a beliver's life by accident." While on that subject he mentions that God's power is released when we realize we are helpless on our own to bring about God's will. As most experienced Christians realize, "Sometimes God's leading for our life doesn't make sense at all from the human viewpoint." As one reads the Bible, one sees this has historically been the case, but God's ways are higher than our ways and he knows what is best.
This book promotes God dependency, not man self-sufficency. It achieves the goal of the author, i.e., it teaches you how to use the gift of faith God has given you.

Do you need down to earth inspiration?Review Date: 2002-12-16
Are you overwhemled or caught up in day to day events? Mr. Templeton's collections of various authors and his own works will explain sometimes difficult situations into easy to understand english. For example, lesson "No one knows the weight of another's burden" on page 20 is about the young man in a male therapy group.
The men were in a group session and the person in the story is a new participant. The mediator explained that each person would have a few minutes to explain his problem and what they plan to do about it. Natually, the new person thought with his marital break down, near bankruptcy and poor health, his would be one of the saddest cases.
Before it was his turn to speak, a handsome young man in his 20's revealed that he was terminally ill and had 6 months to live. Rather than dwell on it, he decided to take up flying lessons and live! Naturally, everybody else was taken off guard and rediscovered the gifts they have.
Templeton's 200 lessons in this book address almost every situation around. You don't have to be struggling with life to enjoy this. Everybody needs a bit of down to earth insiration and you'll have it with this!

In between these two principles there are numerous other words of advice.
On individual growth, Edison is quoted saying "If you are doing anything the way you did twenty years ago, there is a better way" (p. 273).
We're reminded of the fact that "success feeds on itself and creates move success" (p. 259).
Writing on the quality of life being manifested by one's thoughts, Templeton observes quotes Arnold Patent (p. 251) who noted "What we focus on expands."
A discussion on work being a revelation of one's gift is worth attention. He cites the Latin origin of the word "vocation" as being "to call" and goes on to say that one's work is a person's calling. He encourages readers to find their individual calling.
Perception is discussed along with opportunity as he asks readers to ask themselves a question. "As yourself from time to time what you are doing to prepare yourself for success" (p. 175). He adds "Have you trained yourself to recognize opportunity when it knocks?" (p. 175).
On page 163 there's an insightful quote from Calvin Coolidge, "no person was ever honored for what he received, but for what he gave."
The books' weakness is that he ties Christianity into all the other religions of the world, ignoring its distinguishing difference. It is the only religion whose leader made the claims He made and whose body has never been discovered by critics who denied the Resurrection.

"Old School America" The Way Life Should Be !Review Date: 2004-11-26
Peter Slovenski is an outstanding coach and a true gentleman.
His co-authors are typical of the top-notch student/athletes
that Peter works with at Bowdoin College.
Reading "Old School America" brought back so many wonderful memories. It also reminded me of how much I have had to adjust and change as a parent, teacher and coach these past 35
years. The picture and caption on page 78 really hit home. I taught World Geography for 33 years and then it was taken out of our curriculum.
There are so many terrific quotes from our former leaders. It certainly makes those of us from the "Old School " think about what the future might bring.
This book is a refreshing look at where we came from.
Peter, Patrick and Rich have provided a very interesting look
into the past for our future generations to enjoy and reflect upon.

Knowing an unknown PresidentReview Date: 2008-03-20
When he died in 1933 it wasn't long that New Dealers and historians supportive to FDR and his programs relegated Coolidge to the ash heap of "historical life" a failure. However, Coolidge was far from it.
In many ways Coolidge espoused the Conversative views that caused many of us to admire Ronald Reagan. If you don't believe it then this is what Coolidge had to say about Freedom when nominated for President in 1924:
"I want the people of America to be able to work less for the Government and more for themselves. I want them to have the rewards of their own industry. This is the chief meaning of freedom."
You will not hear anything like this coming from any of the current candidates running for President in 2008.
The beauty of this compilation by Hannaford is that it relates so well to the political and social world of today. IMHO, Coolidge saw then the problems that face our nation today. Oh, yes, another beauty of this work, is that it is a very quick and entertaining read.
A must have for anyone interested in Calvin CoolidgeReview Date: 2008-05-10
Very good selectionReview Date: 2005-01-28
Hannaford begins with a short discussion of the renewed interest in President Coolidge. He then moves onto a very abbreviated biography and a timeline of his life. After these 34 pages, the rest of the book is dedicated to quotes listed by subject. Each quote has its source and context (when appropriate) of the quip.
Through this book, you begin to get a little deeper understanding of Coolidge.
