Murray S. Davis is a genius. Like Nietzsche, he says in ten sentences what is usually said, or not said, in ten books. He makes you think, gives you much to think about, which is worth so much more than the price of this book. See also his "Smut: Erotic Reality/Obscene Ideology", the most profound book on sex I have ever seen. I reviewed that one here also a few years ago (no longer using that e-mail address).

Mary Engelbreit is a favorite of mine: her artistry, her calendars with timely and appropriate quotes from many sources, and most recently her children's picture books and Mother Goose. Having this little book just with her illustrations and quotes is an often-pick-up-book!

Quotes about how to play baseball and how concentration and thought are key
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-23
This book of quotations is not in the genre of Yogi'isms or Stengelese, sayings that have a sense of factual silliness about them. These quotes are about the game, how to play it and what it takes to be able to play it at the highest level. Most of the quotes are from players who were stars, yet some were from players that never accomplished a great deal. Some examples are:

Luck is the residue of design - Branch Rickey
Show me a guy who's afraid to look bad, and I'll show you a guy you can beat every time - Lou Brock
Make your practices like game. Make your games like practices - John Herbold

Of all the major sports, baseball is the most cerebral; it is a game of inches and anticipation, where preparation and molding a situation to your advantage is the difference between pennants and last place. In this book, you can see how success is made, practice, practice and practice. Even the stars talk about thousands of practice swings, thousands of times they practiced moving the ball from their glove to their throwing hand. There is also anticipation and knowledge of the situation, so that when a play begins, you know exactly what you will do whatever happens. It is also about studying the opposition, pitchers remember the exact pitch that a certain player hit well years earlier. What a great game it is!

Unique resource for cultural awareness
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-20
This bilingual book (wonder where Volume I may be found?) by a now-departed eminent and accomplished linguist is a unique resource for cultural awareness. This is a gem, and with more insights than most of the larger (and largely-superficial) similar annotated collections of Arabic proverbs and epithets.

I had the honor many years ago to see Isa Khalil Sabbagh "in action" while he advised and interpreted during a high-level US-Saudi Arabia bilateral conference in Washington, DC.

Well worth the price, and more.

Simone sure knows what she is talking about!!! I have read both of her astrology books, and it is really amazing how helpful they are when it comes to dealing with my dog and cat. At first i was skeptical, but now I'm a believer. My dog is truly a virgo, and my cat is nothing short of a cancer!!!! Simone, is a wonderful writer who just exudes knowledge and confidence. I look forward to reading more by this talented woman in the future.

Some of the greatest actors speak out
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-23
Reviewed by William E. Cooper for Reader Views (2/07)

Do you often reflect about some the greatest actors of theatre and film, and what they brought in terms of real entertainment? Do you remember the pride they took in their work, and that you could easily watch and listen to them, and have the family do the same? Were you part of an audience, someone who wished he or she could remember some of those really good lines or quotes? Well, now you have a source for them. Now you have a book that brings these wonderful actors into your home, business, or library.

This is a book designed to read straight through, or in any part any time. The book content is arranged alphabetically and provides literally hundreds of great quotes from a myriad of actors, both current and historic. I found myself reading the book through, almost without stopping. There are so many great quotes, it is a fascinating read. The content has obviously been thoroughly researched, and considerable thought given to what should or should not go in to the book. What is there is a compilation of quotes about the business and people involved with it. The reader can not only enjoy the book for what it is, but can take so many of the statements and translate them into everyday life.

As the author of the book "Leading Beyond Tradition," I know what it takes to prepare and develop a book. The work involved is significant, but the outcomes are normally well worth the effort. This book was worth it. I am completing a book on some of the greatest leadership quotations of all time, so have a good appreciation for such works. Mr. Phillips intended to deliver a good book, and clearly has done so. "The Audience Book of Theatre Quotations" is well worth your time and resources and should be part of your library. I need to offer a sincere well done to Mr. Phillips.
