A great resource for any aspiring classical actor
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 1998-05-23
I thought that this book was excellent resource for a number of different reasons. First, Mr. Dunmore, a director himself, provides a list of monologues which are far too frequently used (I found this list invaluable). It not only has some of the monologues you would expect to see on a list of this type (Hamlet, Hal/Henry V, Iago etc.), but also some other characters you wouldn't think would be used that frequently: Clarence, Aaron, Launcelot Gobbo and others. Also, I think that Dunmore provides a nice introduction for actors who are new to Shakespeare with a resource guide in the beginning of the book discussing some of the inricacies of speaking Shakespeare. Lastly, I thought all of the monologues (which I thought might have been edited a little more precisely; I didn't like some of the punctuation) were well laid out and gave a nice (but brief) insight into the characters and some of them give suggested age ranges (though I would have loved to have seen this throughout the book). A terrific resource, nonetheless, for any aspiring classical actor who doesn't want to be the hundredth actor to do Puck at an audition.

Both funny and heart-wrenching at times, this book is a perfect insight into the dark and humorous minds of teenagers for those of us who are parents, those of us who plan to be parents AND even those who just know teenagers. It is an eye-opening and enlightening. You MUST get this!!!

A PURE SCREAM!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-12
I know that a lot of people are looking forward to Bush leaving office but not everyone. For the world's comedians and humorists, it will be a dark day because so much of their fodder will be going away. If nothing else, George Bush has proven to be one of the greatest sources of political humor since Gerald Ford was in office. Look, I don't agree with many Bush bashers who consider him unintelligent. I think Bush is a pretty smart guy but I just don't think he expresses himself very well. He is a good ol' boy at heart and unfortunately for him, that often comes through when he speaks. To Bush's credit, he certainly knows his limitations. In fact one of the quotes in this book find Bush admitting that he's not exactly a great linguist.

You can tell by just seeing the cover with those rolling plastic eyes that this is going to be a screamer and it doesn't disappoint. "Am-Bushed" is humorist Leland Gregory's collections of Bush's language oddities garnered throughout his Presidential terms. Sometimes you have to read the quotes two or three times to even understand them and then you're stunned that any person, much less our president could stumble so much in the realm of public speaking. Such is his charm.

Some of my favorite quotes: "Most people in Arkansas know where Texas is and all the people in Texas know where Arkansas is." Speaking in front of a group of Arkansas school children and basically insulting the state of Arkansas.

Here's a classic, "Nobody can threaten this country. Oh, they may be able to bomb a building..." Wow!

And then there is this one: "August was a month of accomplishment here in Washington." Said on August 2, 2002!

Besides the quotes there's also a Bush dictionary containing dozens of misused or completely made up words. Pure genius! Great little book!

The Best Bible Program

I have tried numerous Bible software. I will not try another, as I have found the ultimate program. It has all the attributes I was looking for in other programs. The search for verses is awesome, the built-in original Webster dictionary is a wealth of definitions using God's Word, and the American Quotations is a rich field of our American Christian heritage.

Highlights

Crase, highly touted for his poetry book "The Revisionist", has given us what amounts to highlighted and underlined passages from authors "who have claimed" him. These include Emerson, Stevens, Gertrude Stein, Rachel Carson, W.E.B DuBois, William James, Thoreau, Whitman, Langston Hughes, Aldo Leopold, John Ashbery, etc. Most are poets. He has said that placing the passages side by side, arranging them, involves "choice and commitment" which he finds more interesting than reading one man's opinions.

He has arranged these selections under headings which are commentaries in themselves: Under the heading "Doing Your Thing" you find Emerson, Stein, and Ashbery, but then as a footnote, quotations from politicians, Bush and Reagan (and their wives), that set the prior, more profound reflections into greater relief.

Under "Majority Rule" Emily Dickinson: "Dear friends--we cannot believe for each other."

Under "Immortality" Emerson: "I think we may be sure that, whatever may come after death, no one will be disappointed."

Wallace Stevens under "Home": "Life is an affair of people not of places. But for me life is an affair of places and that is the trouble."

A particular favorite entry under "Comparative Literature": Gertrude Stein, b. 1874 Rainer Maria Rilke, b. 1875

There is so much here to return to again and again--and much of it is unknown as Crase chose to select passages from these authors' lesser known works--much to encourage a return to these American originals. Much to encourage rumination.
