Rarely do you crack the spine of a book put out by a religious publisher and find yourself giggling out loud, but this was my recent experience while enjoying A BARREL OF FUN (Kregel, April 2004, paperback, 224 pages), the latest from British co-authors J. John and Mark Stibbe.
Written in an A to Z format, the collection features humorous vignettes, definitions, quotes & quips, and even a few great cartoon drawings. Far from just a joke book, however, the book also includes numerous, thought provoking stories, prayers and letters.
The perfect resource for anyone who finds himself speaking before a group or writing about matters religious, A BARREL OF FUN includes a note to church magazine editors from the authors granting conditional reprinting privileges. Readers are encouraged to enjoy and share the material included in the book. Much good and many smiles will doubtless be produced by those who read and share the pearls of wit and wisdom found in A BARREL OF FUN.

Extremely important book about Ives

J. Peter Burkholder's book "All Made of Tunes" is one of the most important books about Ives's music. Burkholder's book exhaustively surveys Ives's music, identifying many ways in which Ives borrowed existing tunes (hymns, popular tunes, patriotic tunes, etc). There are many musical examples that support Burkholder's arguments, and the book also has one of the best bibliographies on Ives out there. For anyone with some musical training who's interested in how Ives borrowed tunes, this book is essential.

I recently lost my mother, so I was delighted to come across this inspirational (and instructional) jewel. The quotes by Catholic thinkers and the lovely essays by Cavolina and Bunson make this book a comforting addition to my night table. "All Shall Be Well" is also excellent gift material.

This book was written by Michael Reagan, son of former President Ronald Reagan, and radio talk show host. Bob Phillips is a humorist and author. The book has over 2000 quotes covering hundreds of topics by Americans and about Americans. It also has lots of bible quotes and quotes by other non-Americans such as Alexander Pope and Cervantes for example. Quotes: Where do you go to get anorexia? ~Shelley Winters. Of two evils, choose neither. ~ Charles Spurgeon. Once I was a tapole when I began to begin. Then I was a frog with my tail tucked in. Next I was a monkey on a coconut tree. Now I am a doctor with a Ph.D. ~Anon. If you don't get everything you want, think of the things you don't get that you dont want. ~ Oscar Wilde.

I enjoyed this book immensely. Not only did it have an excellent representation of the book of Revelations [and other books], but the quality of the artwork in this book was great. The book's artistry was not just some amateur's artwork, most of it was the work of many classical artists, one of which is Michaelangelo. This book was put together by the J. Paul Getty Museum [Los Angeles], and I think that speaks for itself. I hope you love this book as much as I do.
