From Ancient Wisdom to 21st Century Thinking

In his book, "Love is by God," David James provides a sensitive, intuitive analysis of what gnaws at society today, violence, greed, consumerism, the constant need for entertainment, pre-occupation with self. It is this way because "we made it that way." He enshrouds his creative thinking with quotes of truisms, sayings and proverbs from gurus over the ages. What ails the individual ails society as a whole. James found peace after an agonizing search over the years. He finds peace must actively be practiced and shared: "You be the one to bring a little peace into someone's life." The many quotes within the book allude to the fact that humankind through the ages has and is searching for words (belief systems) to live by. James discovers that "the kingdom of god is within" (self actualization) and we are to spread joy, peace, hope, and love. If we each practice these things, collectively society improves. James examines traditional thinking of religion and awakens our senses to examine different ways: "the way of always seeing humanity in separate parts, each one needing to be attacked therefore taken under control, or the way of not excluding anybody from love, the way of total peace, the way devoid of fear." The book is more than a "New Age twist of ancient wisdom." It is a drawing from ancient wisdom to help us realize the truth of the present. To me, "Love is by God" is an inspirational guide leading us into 21st Century thinking.

Hard Core Spirituality

Wow. This is a tornado of spirituality that will just not let up. He writes with conviction, passion, and an obvious deep love for bringing people together RIGHT NOW rather than later. I was very skeptical at first, because of the title. But after reading it (and re-reading it) it sinks in and stays with you. I find myself quoting from it and talking about it with my friends at church. It makes for very interesting discussions -- all of which eventually go back to the author's main question: Would you rather be right, or be at peace? I think that is just an awesome way to look at world religions. Get with it folks!

I had this book when I was a little girl and loved it!! (It was published a year after I was born so it's been in my heart for a while). A friend of mine asked if I could pick up some books for her at the library and it was in her pile of many. I recognized it right away and started reading it while I was waiting to be checked out. I could not resist finishing it so I did - in the parking lot! I got that warm, tingly feeling all over. As soon as I walked in the door, I knew that I had to find it online! I feel like I've found the golden ticket. It is truly timeless. I'm getting it for a few friends and for my children - okay it's for me but they'll love it too!

This book can make anyone feel all tingly inside.

I would read this book when I was depressed from the time I was a little girl until now. At age 17, I still read this book when I am upset and it has yet to lose it's ability to make me feel better. Every page brings a smile to my face.

"Love, Love, Love," by Andy Warhol, reproduces several different works, done in various media, by graphic artist Andy Warhol. Some of the selections are black-and-white, and some are in full color. These drawings and paintings are complemented by many quotes from Andy Warhol on the title subject.

This is a delightful book, full of witty and whimsical images. Hearts, flowers, angels, lips, and other motifs are frequently used. This is a great book both for both Warhol devotees and for general readers.

Great lines, great pictures...

A great idea, in an unuaually busy world a nice way to show some one that you care. This book has little tear a way sections that you can share with others. Read the book yourself and then share the tear aways with whom ever. Leave one on the mirror so the it is the first thing that the intended see's when they wake. I put a couple of these in my childs lunch bag and at first he gave me that silly grin, like I embarrassed him, but when a big concert was coming up and I forgot to include one he noticed. I am not usually the kind of person to speak my thoughts and this made it easier to cheer my family on in their day to day adventures.

Feel good book gets you talking
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-16
I bought this book because I want to keep my finger on the pulse of my kid's goals, feelings, and social well being. This book is similar to 'adult' affirmation books, but it truly is written for teens - and very well written;

Every day covers certain themes such as manners, feelings, attitudes, goals, time management, & problem solving. Each day begins with a quote from a variety of folks (Eleanor Roosevelt, Chris Rock, David Robinson, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Jesse Jackson, Sting, Mark Twain, etc.) A short paragraph gets you thinking & talking about the topic. The day ends with a topical affirmation (what the book calls "I-Statements") - suggestions about how to use the day's ideas in your daily life.

We have enjoyed this book. It's approx. 4'x6' and close to 400 pages. I keep it on the kitchen cupboard and plan to continue using it over breakfast throughout the school year.

GREAT!

Johnson's Mama Must be Proud of her Son
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-01
Once you've read "Mama Used to Say" you'll understand how this young man was inspired to march bravely into the world and achieve success in life. This isn't a large book, not in size or number of pages, but it is a major accomplishment in depicting the collective wisdom passed from generation to generation with a beguiling blend of wit, wisdom, and insight. As the title suggests, it was Johnson's "Mama" and other family members who influenced him to reach for the stars.

This fascinating book is the perfect Mother's Day gift.

Among the 20 heartwarming and inspirational tales in "Mama Used to Say," Johnson gives a testimony to the instinctive capacity of all mothers to love and to nurture their children not just through deeds, but through the spirited words that touch their souls. In the stories on "Life and Living," "Success and Failure," "Family and Relationships," and my favorite, "Love," the author reaches out to each of us in a personal way that has the capacity to give hope to the hopeless and guidance to the lost.

Touching & Inspirational

I've come to relate to this little book and its 'sayings'. It shrinks the basic ideas we all think about down to size in a few choice words.

A Man's Life provides clues to living an authentic life.

This book is a gem. Martin's epigrams are true and authenticfor him -- and when I read it, I see the similarities not only for myown lifetime, but the subtle victories and sometimes crushing defeat and pain that invariably comes when any of us attempt to live a unique life without guarantees of the outcome. One of my favorite Martin epigrams: "Not one of us is less delicate than the other; we simply shatter in different places."

Scott Peck has been a voice of peace and determination for the past 20 years. In this wonderful combination of two of his most famous and successful books, "The Different Drum" and "The Road Less Traveled" simple, insightful and useful tips are given for each day of the year.

They are a combination of spiritual growth and personal struggle to an eventually goal that are as true today as when Peck wrote both books.
