It is that simple, and that obvious. Even if you already know that, reading Dr. Leboyer's short but poetic title, will help you tune into the natural rhythm and pulses of life. I highly recommend it.

If you want to continue a non-violent and caring way for your child after birth, I wrote a book about early infant and toddler care, based upon indigenous wisdom across the globe Healing Our Children: Because Your New Baby Matters! Quite an approach, and I sent this book to friends expecting this summer. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.B0006WPMS25112008-03-26Birth Without ViolenceAlthough I first read this book 30 years ago, its message is still as vital today. From A. de Salverte not by JoyThis is the best book I have read on all the 20 or more pregnancy books I have read recently ! It is a masterpiece! This French man brought to the world an amazing, most touching, revolutionary way to honor the sacredness of childbirth. This book has brought to me reverence for the baby's needs, and has hlep me understand the importance to create a sacred space for the baby and the mother.

Thank you Frederick LeBoyer for your incredible contribution to this world!

The classic guide to gentle birth that revolutionized the way we welcome our children into the world.
* The first book to express what mothers have always known: babies are born complete human beings with the ability to experience a full range of emotions.
* Shows how gentle lighting, a quiet atmosphere, and a warm bath allow a newborn to ease the transition from womb to world without trauma or fear.
* New translation overseen by the author himself; also includes a new author preface.
Birth without Violence revolutionized the way we perceive the process of birth, urging us to consider birth from the infant's point of view. Why must a child emerge from the quiet darkness of the womb into a blaze of blinding light and loud voices? Why must an infant take its first breath in terror, hanging upside down as its vulnerable spine is jerked straight? Why must the infant be separated from its mother after spending nine months inside her nourishing body?
Examining alternatives to technocentric approaches to childbirth, this classic text shows us how we can create an environment of tranquillity in which to welcome our children: a relaxed mother, gentle lighting, soothing atmosphere, and a warm bath that mirrors the child's prenatal surroundings. Dr. Leboyer's simple techniques show us how a birth without violence has far-reaching implications for improving the quality of human life physically, emotionally, and spiritually.1557043140Loving Hands: The Traditional Art of Baby Massage0553381156Ina May's Guide to Childbirth0965987302Birthing from Within: An Extra-Ordinary Guide to Childbirth Preparation1570671044Spiritual Midwifery0440505658The Secret Life of the Unborn Child: How You Can Prepare Your Baby for a Happy, Healthy Life1000Subjects1Arts & Photography2Biographies & Memoirs3Business & Investing4Children's Books4366Comics & Graphic Novels5Computers & Internet6Cooking, Food & Wine86Entertainment301889Gay & Lesbian10Health, Mind & Body9History48Home & Garden10777Law17Literature & Fiction13996Medicine18Mystery & Thrillers53Nonfiction290060Outdoors & Nature20Parenting & Families173507Professional & Technical21Reference22Religion & Spirituality23Romance75Science25Science Fiction & Fantasy26Sports28Teens27Travel283155Books0966322304http://www.amazon.com/Catholic-Reason-Scripture-Mystery-Family/dp/0966322304%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D096632230428260http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51H6TNT7W5L._SL75_.jpg7548http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51H6TNT7W5L._SL160_.jpg160102http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51H6TNT7W5L.jpg475302PaperbackScott HahnLeon J. The depth of the book is fantastic and should be read over and over for it to sink in. I am buying 5 more copies to give to my closes friends...and I have never done that before. Need I say more. 0966322304411122006-08-31Quite Reasonable Scott Hahn is without question the most popular and important Catholic apologist in today's world. Not only is he an incredibly gifted author but he is also a very dynamic speaker as well. His efforts have not only helped many of the Catholic faithful to better understand our faith but he has also been instrumental in the conversion process for many new Catholics. He himself was a Protestant minister until he began to examine scripture more closely and found a home in the Catholic Church.

Most of Dr. Hahn's books are the exclusive work of his brilliant mind and I have yet to read one that didn't teach me many things and help me understand better the things that I thought that I knew. In somewhat of a departure however the good doctor only writes one chapter and serves as co-editor of the rest of the essays that make up this book. Surprisingly, Dr. Hahn's chapter is not the best one to be found within this collection but among such other fine works that is nothing to be ashamed of. Among the best chapters are those by Curtis Martin, Kris Gray, Timothy Gray and Kimberly Hahn all of whom shine in a sky full of stars.

The basic theme for this collection of essays is the Church as the family of God (familia Dei) and each and every chapter deals with some aspect of this reality. From chapters on Our Lady's role as our mother, Divine sonship, the Church as the bride of Christ and the reality of Purgatory to the use of the term Father when addressing a Priest this book covers many interesting facets of our Catholic family. Best of all everything is explained in an easy to read and understand method with the authors not assuming that we are all as well educated in the Faith as they are.

There are a few negative aspects of this book however that deserve some attention. In any collection of essays some will be better than others and that is certainly the case here. None of the essays are bad, or even average for that matter but some of them are just a bit dry in places. Another problem is that some of the authors tend to use way too many quotes, one of which is so long that it takes up an entire page. Some quotations are reasonable and necessary but some of these authors push the limits a little too far. One other point that registers as both a negative and a positive is the somewhat repetitive nature of some essays. It is excellent that the main them is discussed time and again and that the subject is never far from the surface but too often I found myself thinking that I must have lost my place because I had read the same exact thing just minutes ago. I don't know how this could have been avoided but it was sometimes disconcerting.

There is much to know about the Catholic Faith and despite some minor flaws Dr. Hahn and company have done a marvelous job of explaining some of the very basics of Church teaching. They are not mean spirited or pompous as they explain to us less educated Catholics some things that we really should have known already. This book can justifiably be touted as another winner in the Hahn collection.Catholic for a Reason III explains the Sacrifice of the Mass in light of Scripture and Church teaching—a timely topic, since October 2004 begins a special Year of the Eucharist, declared by Pope John Paul II. Popular Catholic authors, including Scott and Kimberly Hahn, Jeff Cavins, and Tim Gray lend unique insight into topics like the "The Mass and the Synoptic Gospels, "The Eucharist in the Apostolic Church," and "The Mass and Evangelization."0385509359Reasons to Believe: How to Understand, Explain, and Defend the Catholic Faith0898704782Rome Sweet Home: Our Journey to Catholicism1931018235Catholic for a Reason II: Scripture and the Mystery of the Mother of God, Second Edition (Catholic for a Reason)0385496591The Lamb's Supper: The Mass as Heaven on Earth0892838299A Father Who Keeps His Promises: God's Covenant Love in Scripture12302Roman Catholicism12292Catholicism12290Christianity22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books12295General12292Catholicism12290Christianity22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books713628011General AAS12292Catholicism12290Christianity22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books172811Apologetics12449Theology12290Christianity22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books12455Catholic12449Theology12290Christianity22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books12458General12449Theology12290Christianity22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books713643011General AAS12449Theology12290Christianity22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books713626011General AAS12290Christianity22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books16009871General16009861Theology12779Religious Studies22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books713658011General AAS16009861Theology12779Religious Studies22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books12504General22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books713609011General AAS22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books400272011Paperback394184011Mass Market401237011Trade394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155BooksRCN5NGYKJ6WJVPaladins: Living Fidelity to Christ & His ChurchRSVGEZR0JHHFJRead These Books & Embolden Your Catholic Faith!R2PAFCYUYD4KKGScott's Catholic CornerR11M557A6AF70DMy Favorite Books on Catholic Spirituality and FaithR2LTAO99YTMM08Dr Scott Hahn Scripture StudyR2OK4VHVDZPJ2JMary & the Communion of SaintsR2A2S28J2X0ACYEucharist, Liturgy, & Sacraments for Protestant inquirersR14R0CBUGWSDN1Protestant intro to Catholicism2BDVF4GC6YOXOScott Hahn Books (in chronological order)12O00R08TANGCCatholic apologetic0961598484http://www.amazon.com/Classical-Loop-Chains-Jewelry-Crafts/dp/0961598484%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D096159848462918http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/5132CZTD6FL._SL75_.jpg7554http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/5132CZTD6FL._SL160_.jpg160115http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/5132CZTD6FL.jpg500359Jean StarkSpiral-bound9780961598488800961598484English11203495USD$34.95Brynmorgen Press1190Book1999-12-15Brynmorgen PressBrynmorgen PressClassical Loop-in-Loop Chains (Jewelry Crafts)1958803200USD$32.003400USD$34.004200USD$42.00511011ATVPDKIKX0DERhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/help/seller/home.html?seller=ATVPDKIKX0DERNewnewJ1ApYjB6QTQgpr9fDWGai%2FhNbpMBwkf9H%2BCOSOr4vjazpdkAZp8fCXlQT6NNMKrX0nVAm8dsfwLMeC174cc02A%3D%3D3495USD$34.95Usually ships in 24 hours5.021509615984844002008-11-16Great sourcebookIf you want to make chains this book teaches you all you need to know. Step by step instructions are clear and easy to follow. The binding is really tight so it is hard to turn pages without the fear of tearing a page.09615984845002008-10-18Tantalizing introductionChainmaking is one of the most basic and most advanced techniques in jewelry fabrication: basic in its modest demands for tools, materials, and technique; advanced in its demand for utter mastery of technique. That's not a contradiction. Each step is simple enough, within the range of someone who know which end of the torch to hold. Doing that step a hundred times in a row, identically each time, that's where mastery comes in. In paticular, there's that fusing (welding) step that starts every project. I learned to hard-solder a fair joint, way back when, but never mastered fusing, even when dissimilar metals wanted desperately to form a eutectic.

I'll try again. Results, when they work, are just too seductive. This book gives clear and specific directions - maybe too specific some times. Perhaps I really do need 108 links for some project. Not 110 or 106. But perhaps my materials didn't meet the under-1% precision requirement. Well, if you already know the techniques that the authors assume, you'll read past the over-fussy bits.

I'm just carping, though. This book really stands out. Directions are utterly clear, and nicely illustrated. Admittedly, a bare beginner might struggle, but this book never meant to address that reader. Given hard covers, the spiral binding lies flat easily, or stands open where you opened it. Illustrations really illustrate the techniques - even without pliers in hand, you might feel yourself following along. Projects range across a wide span of skill levels, but this gives no indication which are which. That's OK. These authors address a readership that understands what the words mean and that can rank themselves honestly against the demand each project places on the reader.

I can't wait to get started.

-- wiredweird09615984845002008-07-05The best book for handmade chainsThis lady has spent years researching ancient techniques and it is to her credit that granulation and woven chain has finally come to America.

These chains are not soldered; they are fused and woven. I recommend you have at least a semester of college level jewelry or several years of soldering under your belt before jumping in with this one. But it worthwhile if you want to make chains that are worthy of royalty, or have a chain for a piece of art jewelry that will do it justice.

This is a workbook, progressing from the simplest and easiest to progressively more complex chains. After the first couple hundred fused links you become pretty adept. After fusing the links, you will learn to weave links into patterns. These are not your ordinary chains. They are strong, beautiful and flexible.

Jean is obsessively precise in her work, so this book is very precise. She goes over what gauges work for which patterns, as well as all the little tips that make a chain look superb. It's a lovely book, very well-written and one to be included in a goldsmith's library.

To get a better idea of the creativity and precision of this lady's work, go to Randy Smith's website: http://www.rocksmyth.com/ and look for Jean Stark's work. Prepare to be amazed at all the lovelies and realize that pictures do not do her work justice, as good as the pictures are. Many of the chains are made with 30 ga. wire, which is not much thicker than sewing thread. Her chains feel like silk.

If you're serious about making fine quality chains, then you need this book. Jean Stark is the guru. 09615984845002008-06-20Great BookThis was just what I was looking for. Clear instructions with photos. Not for the lazy or faint of heart.Great ancient traditions brought back to life.
Since its publication in 1997, "Classical Chains" has become a classic in it's own right. Clear step-by-step instructions will lead you through a total of 38 chain styles, all derived from the elegant loop-in-loop process.
With 350 drawings and 45 photographs, this is clearly the definitive work on this topic. B0007BVAZQ5112008-10-04Good Collection of KnowledgeWe say Spirituality is not something we want to fall into. But in real terms we dont know what in actual Spirituality is !!!
This books explains the human life and the way to live it fully with the understanding of oneself...(SELF-Realization)

Keep Reading.B0007BVAZQ5222008-05-15Excellent read that walks the line between intellect and spirit.I am only part way through the first volume, but it is far enough into the works to gather an understanding of the maginitude of Swami Vivekananda's understanding and straight forward elucidation of Vedanta. His writings are intellectual in nature with a strong undercurrent of spiritual truth. He has the ability to stir within the mind something unspeakable through his words. This is a testament to his depth and understanding. So far, in this first volume, there is an ongoing feeling of freedom from creed and blind belief, and a very structured, scientific approach to living through Yoga. This will certainly appeal to those who are disheartened by orthodox faith, but still are religious minded and are a seeking for greater truth. Excellent!B0007BVAZQ5222008-04-12Life's change agentIn the moments of desperate help, this book has thought me how to hold my self together. It has made me a better person overall. I recommended this book to all of my friends and teachers. It is by far one of the most AMAZING book I have ever seen. B0007BVAZQ30112008-01-26a pointer towards highest truth.the thing that i most loved about this collection is his photograph that came with the books like a little book mark, but also much of what he says is truly inspired. i was most impressed by his knowledge of bhakti yoga - the yoga of love, which to my mind is the greatest gift of hinduism to the rest of the world. love is the word of all true mystics which points us toward ultimate reality/unity. i do not agree however with his analysis that all yogas are equally valid. i see that a quite sizable chunk of jnana yoga is mislead in its analysis and understanding of the nature of things.

vedanta is significant in that it is the science of religious truth. it seeks to uncover those truths that are universal to all religious or spiritual journeys... whether by believer or non believer... certain verifyable and repeatable truths and practices and results of these practices. vedanta is more than a religion it is the truth that is out there waiting to be found again and again, in being after being, life after life.

i see 'advaita' vedanta as primarily seeking union with God, or the super- self/paramatman. i would however warn that the mundane 'i' must undergo radical transformation, or complete extinction with renewal and re-birth if union/yoga with God is to be attained. (i speculate!!!)

as mentioned above, the ultimate is true love, personified in hinduism as bhakti. true love has been known to be in definition, to be 'loving kindness' by the worlds greatest proponents of truth. take for example the jews (proponents of one true god) and their use of the word 'chesed' and then the diametrical opposition of buddhism (proponents of the budda ideal) which uses the word 'metta'. these two great religions have recognised the meanining of 'loving kindness' over vast stretches of time. but it is clear too that Jesus, a jew also had a profound experience of and egagement with 'chesed'. Vivekananda also was a very loving human being it would seem from his writings. however i think he was wrong in that he did not consider that 'loving kindness' is more than merely an attribute, but it is infact the very being and persona of ultimate reality. of which there is only one persona. (manifesting in three persons, though one would not expect him to know that without a profound experience of Jesus).

vivekanandas books give a brilliant over-view of the various aspects of hindu faith... but am i right in thinking that he was an impersonalist, despite what he wrote on bhakti. i dont know. hard to pin down.

there is a slight shadow over the first book in the compendium, but is this because of a 'blessing' on the book, or simply that he is in areas misguided. as i see it his greatest error is to embrace non-dualism in relation to good and evil.

yes, it is true to say that evil may be good and good may be evil, as well as to say that good may be good and evil evil, but simply because the two extremes may cancel one another out one should not assum that all reality is always an illusory construct. non-dualism is valid, but not very helpful, a lower truth.

if one is careful, one will see that with an understanding of the mundanities of good and evil, that one may aspire to and better understand the nature of good, that is 'true' good, the third and apexal point on the triangle. 1,2,3 and or 1,1,2 (there is a progression in the first set, and a correspondence in the second set - if one applies these numerals to a basic triangle).

taking love for example, one does not have to be clever to realize that love may lead to hate, and in some cases love is a form of hate. if a country goes to war or an individual is angry at someone, it can usually be understood as an offence against love. and loving ones country so much that one goes to war for her is a sad example of mundane love. however this love is love without kindness and therefore is not 'true' love. true love is loving kindness, since true love must be kind, it must love its enemies (so what enemies has it). thus asserting, socratese was expected to drink poison, for 'corrupting' the youth of athens.

interestingly vivekananda follows the argument that india maintained her identity and beliefs in the face of invasion, simply because she did not resist the occupiers (islamic and christian). she bent like a reed in the wind.

vivekananda would have benefitted from a better understanding of the mystic sides of christianity and islam, both of which he seems to misunderstand on certain important points, or simply not to know about.

all in all an intersting read. not as developed as ramana marharshis vedanta, and though he may have been an impersonalist of sorts he does not go into the details of the process of impersonalist union with/becoming god. yoga is described but not actual process of union with God, though he does mention this as a possiblity that was sometimes avoided by the bhakta who wished to worship God as the object of their love. they found this more fullfilling than becoming a god.

he covers a wide area and its hard without deeper study to understand his personal position on things. all in all, what impresses me most about him is that he was clearly a very decent human being. a shame though about his philosophical indifference toward the dualism of good and evil. (but he cant be blamed. a reading of the baghavad ghita can either assert this dualism or deny it. you will find people in both camps who have studied the ghita).

anyway, these books need to be read with discernment, as i have said, there is a slight shadow over the first book. dont let this scare you away from reading them, but approach with prayer.

with very much love, from, snow-flake. xxx

A huge collection of the books, lectures, letters, poetry of Swami Vivekananda in 8 volumes.Formerly sold for $55.00.

Special subsidized price. This was my first and is still my favorite. Tons of beautiful pictures of our planet. All sorts of exotic locales I didn't know existed. Especially nice to have if you're an artist of any kind looking for inspiration.075663332X5002008-04-09Excellent reference book, love it.I saw a smaller version from a local bookstore, bought the large version from Amazon, the fonts are much more comfortable to read. I am using the book as a reference, feel very satisfied. The book is also good for random browsing, the paper and printing are both of very high quality.075663332X5012008-02-13AWESOMETHIS IS GREAT BOOK WITH A LOT OF INFO. MY TEENAGER LOVES IT AND SO DOES MY HUSBAND075663332X4222007-12-29Coffee Table ReferenceThis book was a Christmas request from my 6th grader who is very curious about earth sciences. He was genuinely excited to see it when he opened it. In some ways it is more like a coffee table picture book than a reference book. It is lavishly illustrated with detail-captioned photos and charts. This is not the kind of book you're going to sit down and read cover to cover, but instead are going to use like a good encyclopedia of earth science. My older child, who is interested in astronomy, received the companion book "Universe" and the two make a beautiful pair of additions to the reference library.075663332X5002007-11-04Best all rounderA great book with a nice balance of pictures (including some full page) and informative text about, well...about nature! In the best-selling tradition of Smithsonian Animal, this extraordinary survey of our planet provides unrivaled insight into the forces and processes that formed our environment and which continue to influence its evolution. It is true that Orwell hated imperialism, fascism and capitalism, and that he spent the majority of his career stumping and scrapping for democratic socialism, but no political ideology ever swallowed more abuse from one of its own. For every positive word Orwell scribbled or spoke about socialism he threw in at least a paragraph of denunciation, insult and mockery; indeed, in THE ROAD TO WIGAN PIER he so ridiculed the pimply, sniggering, ivory-tower intellectuals who were the public face of the movement that the Left Book Club, which had commissioned the book, added an introduction that basically disowned it. Orwell was quite simply something that doesn't exist nowadays: a man who didn't let his political opinions interfere with his observations. He spoke the truth, or what he saw as the truth, without any respect for the party line, and if he brassed off his own side in so doing, that was just too damn bad.

ESSAYS is not like the other Orwell books on the market, which featured pieces selected by an editor - THE ORWELL READER, A COLLECTION OF ESSAYS, etc. It is a massive, hardbacked, dumbell-heavy compendium of every single essay he penned in his entire career, spanning the period 1928 - 1949: letters to newspapers (some of them unpublished), BBC broadcasts, the innumerable "As I Please" columns, famous works like "Such, Such Were The Joys" and "The Lion and the Unicorn", innumerable book reviews...in other words, 1,360-plus pages of acid observation, scourging honesty and gallows humor, delivered by a master at the top of his form.

Obviously, you have to be a pretty hardcore fan of G.O. to lug this miniature telephone book out of the store, but it's a bargain at any price. Orwell's special genius was that he could tackle something completely ordinary - a ponderous scholarly work on political trends, a second-rate gangster novel, American comic books, magazines devoted to young boys, a government White Paper, even ordinary British postcards - and unmask the hidden, inner motivations which lurked behind them. His ability to see through dishonest arguments, expose hypocrisy, trace twisted motives to their roots, and draw timeless conclusions from seemingly trivial political and pop-culture events is rivaled only by his willingness to say the unsayable. Who but Orwell could get away with a such a brutally frank discussion of the motivations behind everything from anti-Semitism to pro-Communism, the allowance for the possibility that British Imperialism was worse than Nazism, or the statement that the root of Hitler's appeal was that Fascism was psychologically more sound than its alternatives, because it played into the fact that humans want struggle and sacrifice as much as pleasure and saftey? The answer is nobody; nobody else would have dared. Or would dare, now, when nearly every sentence written by politcos Left, Right and Center is either intellectually dishonest, partisan hackwork, or so filled with political, racial, and sexual correctness, with platitudes, with clichés and buzzwords, with stupidity and cowardice, that they essentially have no meaning?

In "1984", Orwell coined the term "duckspeak" to describe those who chatter unconsciously, unaware of the meaning of their own words but certain of their conformity to the party line. Well, you can love Orwell, you can hate him, or you can disagree with him to the middle of your bones, but one thing is absolutely certain: nowhere in the wrist-straining tome that is ESSAYS will you hear a single quack.
01411830635002008-03-12Political writing as art; all art is propagandaIn these by times highly emotional essays written in the 1930s and 1940s George Orwell gives us with in depth analyses his personal viewpoint on the literary, political and socio-economic scene.

In literature, he sees the novel as `a Protestant form of art, a product of the free mind, of the autonomous individual.' Orwell's aim was to `push the world in a certain direction: a battle against totalitarianism and for democratic Socialism.'
In his criticism he searches for the essential (hidden) message of the author.
Dickens's rather naïve creed is: `If man would behave decently, the world would be decent.' His ideal is `a hundred thousand pounds, a quaint old house, a sweetly womanly wife, a horde of children and no work.'
Henry Miller's books are `a passive acceptance of decay and evil.'
H.G. Wells dreams of a utopian World State.
R. Kipling is a jingo imperialist, but he didn't understand that `an empire is primarily a money-making concern'.
W.B. Yeats is in essence a defender of feudalism, `a great hater of democracy and of human equality, of the modern world, science, technology and the concept of progress.'
A. Koestler's main theme is `the decadence of revolutions owing to corrupting effects of power.'
P.G. Wodehouse's real sin is to present the English upper classes as much nicer than they are.
In `Gulliver's Travels', J. Swift delivers a frontal attack on totalitarianism and shows that he is a disbeliever in the possibility of happiness.

Orwell's view on world matters is rightly `no Law, only Power'.
Nationalism is inseparable from the desire for power.
The concentration of the media in the hands of a few rich men puts the freedom of the press and intellectual liberty under attack. The `very concept of objective truth' is lost.
The Spanish war showed him the essential horror of army life.
He is extremely severe for the British establishment: `The British ruling class thought that Fascism was on their side.' For them, `it is better to inherit, than to work.' `In an England ruled by stupidity, to be `clever' was to be suspect.'

But his solution is also naïve: `common ownership of the means of production. The State, representing the whole nation, owns everything, and everyone is a State employee.' In other words, he pleads for a massive bureaucracy.
But he contradicts himself when he complains that `everything in our age conspires to turn the writer into a minor official!'

These essays contain also vivid memories of his public school life (`irrational terror') and of his Indian life ('Shooting an elephant'). He comments on sports (`war without shooting), detective stories (J.H. Chase), poetry (`the most hated art form'), mildly pornographic comic postcards (`a harmless rebellion against virtue') and ends with a superb portrait of Ghandi.

These remarkable essays, written by a fearless superb free mind, a fighter for justice and a true `révolté' (A. Camus), are a must read.
01411830635002007-11-17A real treatI believe the other reviews of this book to be quite accurate; rightfully noting its annoyingly bad layout(lacking index, missing page headings of what you're reading, etc). Disregarding these shortfalls, Orwell's writing itself easily makes up for--and surpasses--were the publishers have blundered. I read these essays with child-like Christmas morning joy; finding pleasure in them as if peeling away the wrapping paper from the presents, leaving me engulfed with intrigue over Orwell's subjects, prose and opinions. This book is a real treasure trove for all those who enjoyed Orwell's most famous, if not cliche, works of 1984 and Animal Farm. 01411830634112007-03-22Beyond 1984George Orwell: 1984 and beyond

The futurist novels 1984 and Animal Farm are George Orwell's primary literary legacy. He contributed the phrase "Big Brother" to the language, and is remembered... if at all...as a novelist and social commentator.

But Orwell was much more than that - during the Second World War he worked for the BBC as a commentator, essayist and writer. He was a consummate professional, a brilliant satirist, and an indefatigable correspondent. He volunteered in the Spanish Civil War and wrote "Homage to Catalonia" from his experiences.

What is more surprising is that Orwell ...who died at 46... left voluminous essays, letters and reportage which have been compiled in four thick volumes by Sonia Orwell and Ian Angus. * (George Orwell: Collected Essays, Journalism and Letters; Volumes 1-IV, Nonpareil Books, 2000), and in his Collected Essays.

. He lived as a tramp for a while, got arrested for being drunk, worked low-level jobs and wrote "Down and out in London and Paris" from his experience. Orwell struggled personally and financially; his first marriage ended with h is wife's death, his second was short, and he was usually broke. That changed with the publication of l984 and Animal Farm...the latter a satire on the Russian Revolution. Ray Bradbury's classic "Fahrenheit 451" owes a debt to Orwell. His BBC broadcasts during the War were classics.

In his short life, Orwell produced a huge body of work: his Collected Writings run to 20 volumes, and his essays fill four books. He is one of the major figures of 20th Century English writing.
Major Works

Down and Out in Paris and London
The Road to Wigan Pier
Nineteen Eighty-Four
The Orwell Reader: Fiction, Essays, and Reportage
Homage to Catalonia
Burmese Days

01411830635222007-03-21A great teacher of writing and critical thinkingAs a lit major very interested in politics, I find this collection to be fascinating and instructive. Mr. Orwell's views on what corporations would do to the news media and the stifling effects of politically correct speech are vital today, and should be required in civics and political science classes.

Mr. Orwell managed to anger and inform both liberals and conservatives by exposing hypocrisy and dull-minded dogma. His writing style is sharp and free of tiresome twists and turns. In fact, "Politics and the English Language" (954) targets academic writing that is puffed up for no reason other than to hide the fact that the writer has little to say. (And this article should be required reading in graduate literature classes!)

The power of his insights and imagery can be seen in "How the Poor Die," a sad, upsetting essay that made me want a shower and a drink when I finished reading it. (Again, this is current today with the horribly neglected and virtually unregulated "assited living facilities"--and even the Walter Reed outpatient scandal.)

So few writers have had such vision that it is worth repeating the cliche: George Orwell was a social prophet--a genuine one.

Because of Mr. Orwell's deep understanding of political systems and human nature, his excellent style, and the breadth of his subject matter, I think it would not be over-praising him to say that this volume ranks with Montaigne's collected essays.

This volume is lovely, both in binding and text size; however, as other reviewers have pointed out, the publisher should have taken the trouble to include an index at the end of 1363 pages of essays! (Write to Knopf/Random House to complain!)

I'm going to contact my county library to arrange donating a copy of this; it is a shame this book isn't on the shelves!
These essays, reviews and articles illuminate the life and work of one of the most individual writers of this century - a man who created a unique literary manner from the process of thinking aloud and who elevated political writing to an art.1400040213The Complete Works (Everyman's Library)015626224XDown and Out in Paris and London0156421178Homage to Catalonia0151010269Animal Farm and 198404515249341984 (Signet Classics)504358Formats265040Accessories347567011Alternative Formats368395011Audiobooks13622191Boxed Sets67240Calendars551440eDocs348167011Historical Reproductions300950Large Print301731Libros en español1622Sheet Music & Scores251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books284632General70511Orwell, George70036( O )70021Authors, A-Z17Literature & Fiction1000Subjects283155Books285688Paperback70511Orwell, George70036( O )70021Authors, A-Z17Literature & Fiction1000Subjects283155Books713379011General AAS70511Orwell, George70036( O )70021Authors, A-Z17Literature & Fiction1000Subjects283155Books1002120th Century10016British10311World Literature17Literature & Fiction1000Subjects283155Books713392011General AAS10125General17Literature & Fiction1000Subjects283155Books713365011General AAS17Literature & Fiction1000Subjects283155Books400272011Paperback394184011Mass Market401237011Trade394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books0071487794http://www.amazon.com/Fearless-Negotiating-Method-Reaching-Solutions/dp/0071487794%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D0071487794217556http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41r5hKg-ZYL._SL75_.jpg7547http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41r5hKg-ZYL._SL160_.jpg160100http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41r5hKg-ZYL.jpg500312Michael DonaldsonHardcover658.405297800714877951000071487794EnglishEnglishEnglish8101695USD$16.95McGraw-Hill1160Book2007-03-22McGraw-HillMcGraw-HillFearless Negotiating: The Wish, Want, Walk Method to Reaching Solutions That Work: The Wish, Want, Walk Method to Reaching Solutions That Work75500644USD$6.44102USD$1.0240250011ATVPDKIKX0DERhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/help/seller/home.html?seller=ATVPDKIKX0DERNewnewLMF4h5wyFiwjXHs7X0cGFXFRqI4Eux4RQN3yHbembB6CKsc1OtWdgmJ%2FCh3v7L9GtHD3fS4kWhbX1EyR836vwA%3D%3D1153USD$11.53Usually ships in 24 hours5.021500714877943332007-11-27This Book Makes One Good PointFearless Negotiating by Michael Donaldson is a fairly one-dimensional book on the topic of negotiating and may have very little practical benefits to those in the business world that buy and sell for a living. As a seasoned negotiator, I recognize the "Wish-Want-Walk" method as nothing more than a negotaitor's Opening Position, Goal, and Bottom Line -- what is commonly know as the negotiation bracket. While I agree that defining one's wish-want-walk is critical to the success of any negotiation, this single aspect is over dramatized at the expense of many other crticial strategies and tactics that are critical to achieving success when negotiating.00714877945002007-07-31An indispensible guide! Michael Donaldson provides a clear, concise, and understandable pathway through the complex labyrinth known as "negotiating." He calls his method "wish, want, walk" and throughout the book he brings his points back to that simple three-word concept. Interspersed among the chapters are pithy statements that go beyond traditional business advice, and elevate this to a book about how to improve negotiations in all aspects of your life. Definitely worth reading - several times! 00714877945002007-07-03cultivating chutzpahWell written. A quick and understandable read. Most valuable to me was the "walk point" information. Not simplistic, but very do-able. I would recommend it for the reader who wants to take the angst out of the exchange.00714877945002007-06-08Fearless ForeverDonaldson makes it easy to negotiate in al kinds of situations from family to business. After his book there is no reason to hesitate your next negotiation. It will be so much fun to win without making the other side feel like they have lost that you'll keep looking for new ways to use this info.00714877945002007-06-05just showing up, just won't doFearless Negotiating forevermore disproves Woody Allen's observation that "90% of life is just showing up." I particularly appreciated the chapter on closing the deal where Michael Donaldson discusses a negotiation where the two sides absolutely wouldn't budge on a final point. The Donaldson method for organizing priorities is a sound and sure way to prepare for any sort of negotiation and to avoid losing it in the last fifteen minutes.
Never fear another negotiation!
.
Powerhouse entertainment lawyer and negotiating guru Michael Donaldson has distilled a lifetime of negotiating success into a simple, straightforward plan to get you what you want, when you want it-without the angst.
.
If you've ever been uncertain before a negotiation, felt beaten up after, or thought you could have and should have negotiated better, Fearless Negotiating shows you, step by step, how to erase your fears and preconceptions and tap into the master negotiator that lives within you. This short and compelling guide is an essential companion to achieving more rewarding, meaningful, and mutually satisfying business and personal relationships and outcomes.
.
Donaldson introduces his remarkably effective Wish-Want-Walk Method, which has been successfully presented in seminars around the world:
.
.
WISH-set a goal for the negotiation.
WANT-know where the market is most likely to push the results.
WALK-draw the line that you will not cross.
.
Wish, Want, Walk will be your guide, telling you when to start the bidding, when to quit while you're ahead, and when to cut your losses. Establishing these three points beforehand will make you more comfortable at the negotiating table, reduce your stress, and even help you predict the likely outcome.
. .
Donaldson also shows you how to make the most of your time between creating your Wish-Want-Walk plan and when you go into the negotiating session. He helps you get in touch with your inner, natural-born negotiator, making it easier to make opening offers, bargain with confidence, and seal the deal you want.
. . .0553384260The Power of a Positive No: Save The Deal Save The Relationship and Still Say No1564144984Secrets of Power Negotiating0470045221Negotiating For Dummies0470099305The Peebles Principles: Tales and Tactics from an Entrepreneur's Life of Winning Deals, Succeeding in Business, and Creating a Fortune from Scratch0767915240The Only Negotiating Guide You'll Ever Need: 101 Ways to Win Every Time in Any Situation293523011All Amazon Upgrade293522011Amazon Upgrade251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books293526011Business & Investing293522011Amazon Upgrade251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books293542011Reference293522011Amazon Upgrade251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books684248011Management468220Business & Finance465600New & Used Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books712983011General AAS468220Business & Finance465600New & Used Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books712982011General AAS465600New & Used Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books713014011General AAS319654011Qualifying Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books2683Management2675Management & Leadership3Business & Investing1000Subjects283155Books2612General3Business & Investing1000Subjects283155Books713049011General AAS3Business & Investing1000Subjects283155Books11464Secretarial Aids & Training11461Business Skills21Reference1000Subjects283155Books394181011Hardcover394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books089997354Xhttp://www.amazon.com/Fixing-Your-Feet-Prevention-Treatments/dp/089997354X%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D089997354X707948http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51C31WDNENL._SL75_.jpg7550http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51C31WDNENL._SL160_.jpg160107http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51C31WDNENL.jpg500333John VonhofPaperback6109780899973548100089997354XEnglishEnglishEnglish8801795USD$17.95Wilderness Press1341Book2004-06-15Wilderness PressWilderness PressFixing Your Feet: Prevention and Treatments for Athletes7196099735461206001610USD$16.1001000005.0215089997354X5002007-08-073Day walkerI'm training for the Breast Cancer 3Day walk -- 60 miles in three days -- and stumbled across this book during an internet search for blister prevention and cures.
