In the 25 years since I graduated I never learned as much about the university as I did in reading this book. Burns tells the story of the university in the way of a grandfather. I was enthralled through the entire story. That is unusual for me but I found his story compelling and the scolarship was outstanding. There were sources that were special. His handling of the Erskine affair was delicate at best. I recommend this book to anyone that is interested in the Notre Dame that extends past the football field.

This is the story of Notre Dame. It is the best rendition of the university's history ever published, and is a must for any member of the Notre Dame family.

This book, like the others in this series, is a collection of reviews and essays, here focusing on Robert Burns and his work. From unsolicited reviews of the Kilmarnock edition while Burns was still alive, to brief mentions by great poets, to scholarly essays, it's all here in one volume. Essential material on Burns.

Save yourself the money and buy this book in paperback. This excellent series is well-known, so I needn't mention that they did a great job on Burns.

THE ESSENTIAL BURNS, VOL. 11 OF ECCO PRESS POETRY SERIES

Review Date: 2004-03-17
Perhaps because Shakespeare, Swinburne and Homer are three of my all-time favorite poets, Robert Burns blows me away. His words (filled with an intriguing old Scottish dialect) are like lyrics, verses of songs--tumultuous one moment and subtle and serene the next, but always apparent that swarthy Scottish accent.

In this little, GIFT-SIZED book, THE ESSENTIAL BURNS, the most appealing poems for me are: "A DREAM," "A RED, RED ROSE," and, believe it or not, a short poem called "THE LOUSE" (strangely, probably his best known piece.) I was disappointed by the absence of his poems on the sea, what I consider to be his most compelling, inspirational work. But there is plenty here to dig in to.

Because of his thick, olde-Scottish dialect, many readers and students of literature finds him difficult to read and, sometimes, impossible to understand. But stay with it, I tell them, and when they do they usually end the term feeling much more amiable toward Burns and much more confident of their own poetry-reading abilities.

I feel puzzled nobody so far has reviewd this excellent text by Novikov (and Fomenko). The view-point is somewhat different from Bredon or May or Spanier, but together with Part 2, they form a good introduction to "geometric" topology.

One of the best treatises on geometry/topology available these days!

I first got acquainted with Dubrovin/Novikov/Fomenko collection when I was still a second year (sophomore in the US system) student in Math-Phys
trying to learn the basics on plane/space differential curves as a
complement for my Calculus courses. And since then I've made countless references to this book and its siblings.

The pace is fast compared to
other well known introductions on differential geometry/topology
but the text has many insightful and non-trivial examples
examples. Challenging problems are present everywhere in the text!
Though there are a few problems per chapter, the problems sometimes really
require some mastery of the material being far from immediate
applications of the theory developed(for the joy or despair of the
reader). Intentionally the authors try, whenever possible, to replace calculations and
difficult deductions with conceptual proofs. Frequent links with
physical theories (e.g. mechanics, electromagnetism, general
relativity, field theory etc.) compound a good deal of the text
which makes its reading still more delightful. As a con, I would
say the text is quite hard for a beginner but stubborness pays-off in this case.
The second volume of this series covers differential topology w/ emphasis on many aspects of modern physics, like GR, solitons and Yang-Mills theory. There's also a nice account on complex manifolds, mainly Riemman surfaces and it's relation to Abel's thm. Among other topics: classification of compact surfaces , hyperbolic geometry etc.
The third volume covers Homology theory and included a readable account of Spectral sequences for those who may need to learn the machinery for qualifications exams and or applications of complex geometry to contemporary physics (e.g. twistor theory). Viktor Prasolov has recently published a treatise on Homology with more problems and more rigorous proofs. A nice complement to Novikov's exposition.
Eclectic, but at the same time superb.

This is a nice collection of Robert Burns poems and songs. It is well done and very complete. There is an interesting chronology and a glossary of old Scottish words. Very well done and a reasonable price. I just received my copy and I am thrilled with it. It's amazing how much Burns wrote in his short lifetime. The rustic beauty of the poems and the sublime rhyme schemes are simply amazing and very moving. I recommend this book for someone who wants an inexpensive collection of Robert Burns.

One of the best and most trusted editions of the complete poems and songs of Robert Burns (1759-1796). Try to get one, if you can. (N.B.: The James Barke edition is also excellent.)

I found this book years ago in a second hand bookshop. If you are a fan of Robert Burns then you will love this book. It contains a collection of his ruder poems and songs (ie nine inches will please a lady), some of which I have not seen recorded anywhere else.

My husband & I have spent hours reading this together. It's very funny & titilating. Great for a bawdy giggle. It includes a small glossary of terms. With so many Scots in both sides of the family, you'd think that we wouldn't need it but the book is ever so much more enjoyable when all the inuendos are understood.

This is a painfully, powerful book. Written in the post WW-II years, by a very articulate Tuskegee Airman, Alien Land is a brilliant examination of America's racial/social divide before civil rights laws integrated American life. It should be mandatory reading for incoming freshmen university students, because it has timeless lessons for the human race and every ethnicity.
The author's daughter, Dr. Lauret Savoy, is a geology professor at Mt. Holyoke College in Massachusetts. I understand that Willard Savoy, authored other manuscripts, but his publisher, E.P. Duton and Company, found them too extreme to follow Alien Land. I would love to read more of Willard Savoy; he is so good at his art, wordsmithing.

A Jesuit Scholar Anticipates the Jesus Seminar
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-04-13
Decades before John Dominic Crossan's "The Historical Jesus" hit the New York Times best-seller list, Avery Dulles -- now Avery Cardinal Dulles -- developed a humble, cogent, and reasonable defense of the Jesus that Christians have come to know and love by way of the New Testament.

Don't look to this book if you want a scholarly treatment of the historical atmosphere of the first-century, Roman-occupied, Aramaic-speaking world (for that, I would recommend Raymond Brown's lifetime of outstanding work); look to this book as morning coffee to your own search for the historical Jesus. Dulles is ultimately fair to the goals of the secular Jesus historians, but this work, in a nutshell, reminds us in a very sensible way not to sell our Gospels short as what they are: even if we wipe away the whole question of divine inspiration, they remain an honest biography of the life of Jesus as written by four of his earliest and most loyal followers.
