A Books

I came across this book thanks to two things. One being that it was recommended by another Iraq war author (David Bellavia). The second being that it was on my Kindle recommended reading list. I must admit that at something like 400 pages I expected it to drag on and become convaluted at times. This is not the case at all here. Mr. West does an amazing job of pacing out the book and describing the hellish combat that the Marines faced. He also analyses the political climate and assigns the blame for the unnecessary violence where it appropriately belongs. Kudos Mr. West on a tour de force, we need more authors of your caliber in this genre.

People might be sick and tired of Iraq, but this is an excellent recounting of the battle of Fallujah in 2004 and a detailed analysis of the decisions that led to so many problems in that region.

West zooms in on the street-by-street fighting between the Marines and the insurgents, and these scenes have visceral intensity. You are there with the soldiers as bullets ricochet, RPG rounds careen through alleyways and bodies crumple with mortal wounds. Then West zooms back out to recount the meetings between the politicians, generals and religious leaders whose decisions determine the course of the Fallujuh fighting even more than the actions of the soliders on the ground.

In many ways, Fallujah is a microcosm of the war in Iraq. Misunderstood by the press and public alike, this book studies how countless acts of Marine bravery and heroism were offset by political infighting and dithering within the Bush administration and in the upper echelons of military command. It is at once tragic, exciting, frustrating and mind-boggling.

"After the mutilation of the four contractors in Fallujah in April 2004, the White House and high officials reacted emotionally by ordering a full attack on the city." The same could be said about our government's decision to go to war after 9/11 and Osama bin Laden's escape. One major questionable decision put everyone involved in an impossible situation thereafter. Especially with too many cooks in the kitchen.

Whether you are for, against or just plain frustrated by the war in Iraq, this is a compelling read. I was up until 2:00am each night until I finished it. You will not be disappointed. You will also gain further appreciation for the pressure the principal decisions makers faced, for the soldiers who fought in those streets and for Bing West's reportage.

This is a must read for anyone that wants to really know what it is like and what happened in Fallujah. The next time you see a Marine after reading this, you will thank them for signing up.

I must admit I was not looking for this book when I got it, I stumbled upon it and man am I glad I did. The book is not only a great story of the incredible bravery that our armed forces show every day, but also a great lesson (at least for me) on how military decisions are affected by politics and news coverage. The book is very even handed and leave outs all of the usual "our military and our president never make a mistake and it is the liberal media who is to blame for every thing" crap that dogs other military books. Not that after finishing this book you will not be left wondering how in the world the American press does not find a way to report the heroism that is displayed by these troops every day. I know for me I better understand why when the news harps on "Abu Graib" events (which needed to be told to prevent it from happening again) the troops on the ground feel shafted because they just spent the day risking their lives to save their buddies or patching up an insurgent who was just 1 minute ago trying to kill them. I do now understand their frustration in being lumped in with a few idiots who do something wrong when they are doing such heroic things everyday.

You will also get from this book an understanding how dangerous a news organization which only panders to its audience to push a premeditated message with out reporting the full truth, like Al Jazerra repeatedly does. Which leaves you better understanding the danger that Fox News really is to our own country. When a news organization trusted by so many people repeatedly distorts the truth or only report things that push it's agenda it is dangerous for us all.

This book brings a full 360 degree view of the Fallujah battles, the break down in communications, the mistakes of non-military making military decisions, and the mistakes of the military making diplomatic and political decisions. In this respect this book is truly unique and a great read.

This book is a very good book about the battle. I served with the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force during this battle during Operation Phantom Fury. After returning home and seeing this book I immediately bought it. When you are on the ground even with a high level of information there are still things you don't understand and this book explained some of the things I still didn't understand even after being in the middle of the battle. Now I know where the incoming was coming in when 9th Communications Battalion took the 17 casualties in one mortar attack. Great job Bing and Semper Fi.

This entire set is awesome. I drove over 1,000 miles on the Big Island just exploring the destinations revealed in "The Big Island Revealed". My only caution: the book makes it sound like some remote spots on the islands are ok to visit, when in reality the are private land. I really appreciate the beauty and pristine nature of the islands, and if the public starts visiting some of these areas the land will surely be damaged. Tread lightly, but take this book with you when you go!

I highly recommend this series of guidebooks. This guy really knows what he's talking about. We used the book for Oahu and for Kauai. Never got lost, found everything he talked about. Great books.

I bought this book before my trip to Oahu last year, and it is invaluable for anyone planning a trip. I used to live in Oahu, but this book told me things I had no idea about. The organization is superb -- by area, by activity. There are reviews and commentary about a lot of activities, some with pros and cons so you understand what the reviewer was looking at and why it was important to him, and can determine if that review will apply to your feeling as well. The map of the area was really very useful, and helped us get along very well. We had a good idea of where we were at most points, without having to resort to a city map.

This book helped me plan a wonderful Hawaiian trip without the benefit of a travel agent. I knew what I wanted to do, where I wanted to go, and got a lot of useful information that I would not ordinarily have had. Like: directions to sparsely used beaches (all beaches in Hawaii are public) and information on rarely used hikes (we did one. Only saw two people the whole time)

If you're going, you need this well in advance. It is definitely a Must Buy.

The only guide book that gives you current detailed information. They even post updates online between editions. Things tend to be poorly marked in Hawaii and so the mile marker details help get you where you want to be.

This is the second book I have by the author and like the first, I highly recommend it for travel to Oahu.

Very good recommendations that I found accurate and was pleased to make my decision process based on his recommendations, though not with every one of them was perfect. But that is to be expected since alot of decisions are subjective.

It is a good starting point and of course it is fun to go off book and ask around for opinions from people who live there for some other ideas.

I loved this book, the entire series is amazing. I cannot wait until I read the next one.

Tamora Pierce is an excellent writer. All of her books really put you into the stories and make you feel as though you know the characters personally. This book is no different.

PAGE is the second installment in Tamora Pierce's PROTECTOR OF THE SMALL quartet and it improves on the already fantastic opening novel FIRST TEST. This particular series is again set in the enchanted kingdom of Tortall and features Keladry of Mindelan, now eleven years old and still as determined as ever to become a knight. In FIRST TEST, Kel successfully undergoes a probationary year which had been unfairly imposed upon her by the conservative training master Lord Wyldon, who doesn't believe that women are cut out to be knights. However, Kel truimphs over every test put in her path and Lord Wyldon has no choice but to add her officially to the ranks of pagehood.

PAGE chronicles Kel's three eventful years as a page. Here, she faces a diverse and ever escalating gamut of challenges, from battle lessons to physical tests of endurance and strength, from suffering growing pains (she develops a crush on a friend) to enduring the persisting scorn of several of the male fraternity, and, on one peril-fraught occasion, fighting for her very life as she and her fellow pages must face off against desperate bandits. And then, finally, there's the all-important and extremely difficult fourth-year exam, which will determine whether she'll advance to squirehood, the next rung up to knighthood. But an unexpected, catastrophic event will transpire which will endanger her chances of even attending the test and will pit her against her greatest weakness. Once again, Kel is well served by her fruitful time spent on the Yamani Islands as she habitually makes good use of the adopted martial training and the poise she had learned from her Yamani instructors. Also, now in her second year, Kel has garnered enough friendships amongst her peers that she doesn't feel quite so isolated. Her horse Peachblossom and her helpful flock of sparrows again prove to be invaluable. Meanwhile, her mysterious, unidentified benefactor pleasantly continues to present her with inestimably practical gifts.

As ever, Kel continues to champion the underdog and the helpless. Here, she takes into her care the homeless and homely but ingratiating mutt Jump (never mind that she's not allowed to have pets) and hires into her service the timid maid Lalasa, who had suffered ill-treatment in her past. Kel aims to foster a confidence in Lalasa by instilling in her a belief in her own worth and by teaching her various martial arts moves for self-protection. Kel also continues her informal evening hall patrol as she keeps a watchful eye out for her nemesis, Joren, and his disagreeable clique of hangers-on, who revel in the abuse of the hazing ritual, too often unlawfully beating up on smaller, newer, and younger pages.

Kel persists in being one of the better young heroines out there. I really liked her in FIRST TEST and, here, she's even more appealing. Unlike Alanna, Tamora Pierce's first heroine, Kel isn't imbued with a magical power and doesn't attempt to hide her gender. Kel is a GIRL and very proud to be one, and she doesn't take short cuts. Pierce nicely depicts sequences of Kel stubbornly working hard to better herself as she stoically suffers every bead of sweat, bruise, and ache brought on by her training. Thus, the reader actually ends up cheering all the more for the approbations she does receive.

By the way, I don't mean to knock Alanna. I also enjoyed the quartet of books about her. Her achievements are what made Kel's endeavor here possible. But, yeah, when you get right down to it, Alanna has a supernatural ability while Kel remains a regular human girl. To get even more nerdy, it's kind of like comparing Superman to Batman. Anyway, if you've already read FIRST TEST, I won't have to talk hard and fast to convince you to read PAGE, or the subsequent novels. I'm in the middle of reading SQUIRE right now, myself. And that one, so far, is even marginally better than FIRST TEST and PAGE.

I gave the first of this series 5 stars, and reluctantly subtract one for the execution of her second. The premise is sound - she planned to deal with Kel as a child, a Page, a Squire, and finally as Lady Knight, but the pace and high drama of this book left many things feeling a bit rushed.

Firstly, expect the content to be notably more mature than in First Test. Kel deals with hitting puberty, hitting boys, being hit by boys, and a brutal regimen of forcing down her phobias. This, in addition to intense training, having (and dealing) with crushes on her fellow Pages, and proving over and over and over that she can and will "run with the big boys."

Despite cramming several years worth of experience (literally) into this book, Pierce does an admirable job of containing and streamlining it. The years are well defined, and the individual 'quests' are tightly written and clear. This book also handles the development of Kel's unique abilities in command. Her growing sympathy for commoners and the weak is showcased in a series of growing climaxes. The ending sequence is especially well-done, and younger readers will be very impressed with Kel's maturity and self-sacrifice.

Again, I find that Pierce writes extremely appropraitely for the age-level (estimating by Kel's own age, the pre-teen market) and I find that her focus on morality and strength of conviction in difficult circumstances is fitting for younger readers. I wholeheartedly suggest these books for parents wishing to instil those ideals in their children, in addition to reading them because they are simply VERY nicely crafted books.

**Lastly, as I warned for First Test = Parents who are very careful of the sexual, homosexual, or magical encounters their children have - PLEASE read these books before handing them over to your kids. I personally see nothing wrong with her handling of delicate issues, but you might. And to set your child on a series of entertaining books, and then later ban them for dealing with unfortunate subjects - this makes rebellious and NEEDLESSLY unhappy children. Please, if you are sensitive to sexual references (including a brief mention of homosexuality and extremely frank dealings with rape) and/or the use and presence of magic, please make sure YOU read this first.

Keladry of Mindalen has passed her test and is now a full page, dreaming of becoming a knight. Kel is keeping up with life but it's getting hard. She still has to handle to fact that many, many people are still mad about her becoming a page. While she deals with this she is trying to maintain her training. And ALSO trying to deal with her feelings for her best friend, Nealan of Queenscove. In other words life is hectic for Keladry of Mindalen.
In this book there is a part where Keladry shows her skills and leads her friends out of a sticky situation where they're trapped by a group of bandits while the pages are on a little 'field trip'.

"Ladies have no place bearing arms..." I've said it once and I'll say it again...that's WRONG!

I hope you'll read this book, 'Page'. I'm sure you'll love it.

This is an amazing source of information. If you are self-published author you absolutely MUST buy this book and read it. Then after you read it, keep it close at hand for ongoing reference.

I had never heard of Steve Weber before buying this book. To be honest, I was a bit put off by the cover art.

But the content is entirely above reproach. It's like having a mentor without the sucking up. It's like having a personal friend in the publishing industry alerting you to all those do's and don'ts that no one else would bother mentioning.

Because I honestly have margin notes and highlights and tabs on virtually every page in the book, it's almost impossible for me to choose the most important topics to share with you. But a few of the top tips include understanding the importance and power of Amazon's Top Reviewers, the key components of an "online press kit," how to create a "book trailer" for You Tube, blogging, podcasting, and so much more...

As I said: buy this book. It's just that good!

Plug Your Book was recommended to me at a writers' workshop. It is a step by step guide to marketing on line. This is useful information to me, even during the process of writing a book. I use each chapter like a cookbook, opening up a page, opening up a website, and exploring that website according to the principles Weber is explaining. I already knew how to purchase books on Amazon.com. But, through Weber's book, I have learned the process of peer review, how to participate in that process, and how to approach reviewers. All the chapters provide a foundation for me as I write a book. The chapter on author websites explains how an author website is not just an advertisement. There are specific recommendations for designing an author website, or design a website with a newsletter as preparation for publishing a book. I have given myself permission to take as many years as I need to publish my first book. Weber's book provides me, as well as other new authors, with multiple resources for the whole process of writing, publishing, and marketing our work.

I have read at least a dozen titles on book marketing and I believe this to be the most valuable book available for today's world of internet marketing. The great part about online marketing is that you can actually target specific markets and it's usually free.

Once I picked up Ride the Wind I did not put it down. I read this book whenever and as often as I can. This is an incredible story, the tragedy of watching your family and friends die around you, to becoming one of the "People" all the lessons of what life throws at us. I love everything about this book, I wish they would make a movie that follows the book down to the last detail. Cynthia Ann, Nocona,and the many others mentioned are so strong in history and knowing that Quanah goes on to be such a historic, amazing part of this makes the book more worth reading.
I challenge anyone who reads Ride the Wind to look up some history.

This compelling, meticulously-researched novel is fascinating, thrilling and heartbreaking. I only demoted it to four stars (I would have given it four and a half if I'd had the option) because, like most mass-market paperbacks, it is first-rate story telling but only second-rate writing. That's OK with me, though, a novel doesn't have to be beautifully written to be worth reading.

I enjoyed this book very much but as a mother I feel I must warn anyone who's sensitive that it is very difficult to read in places. In this account of the last years of the Comanche, babies and children are regularly placed in peril, and many of them die. They die from disease and from the elements but most of them are brutally tortured and murdered. The atrocities are committed not just by whites (in fact the whites seem to commit fewer atrocities against women and children overall) but by the Comanche and the other tribes, who don't seem to have any moral rules against torturing and murdering children. I often wondered how much of what I was reading was based on fact and how much was exaggerated, and when researching the question discovered that many of these accounts were taken directly from history.

That is why I found this book so surprising. If you are looking for a romanticized version of Plains Indian life ala "Dances With Wolves," you will not find it here. The Comanche culture was beautiful in many ways, and it was far kinder to nature than European culture will ever be, but the Comanches were a culture of warfare. They did not believe in mercy. When they could, they tortured their enemies, and were not above burning women and children alive, mutilating and raping them. I was fascinated by the detail of the Comanche world but I found it hard to feel any sympathy for many of the characters in this book, on either side, since nearly everyone condoned that kind of warfare and it was difficult for me to relate to them. I can't imagine how anyone who exists in a society where murder and torture is no longer a part of our moral fabric could really feel much sympathy for someone who murdered a child.

Having said that, this is a wonderful book for students of American history, or for anyone who is interested in the Plains Indians. The author has meticulously detailed almost every aspect of Comanche life, from building a lodge to making pemmican. I particularly recommend this book as a balanced look at the conflict between the Plains Indians and white settlers. This was indeed a clash of two cultures who would never be able to peacefully co-exist, and like in any war, there were heroes and villains on both sides.

Or you could try the novelization written by Douglas C. Jones,
Season of Yellow Leaf. Very very good, go try it. It's probably in your library.

I really enjoyed this book. It was moving and well done. Very emotional - I cried a lot.

The book shows both sides of the story of indians and white settlers and is intresting and emotional. I would have to say this is my favourite book.

My one year-old son loves this book. It very quickly became one of his favorites when he received it as a gift and picks it out when it is storytime. The pictures are wonderful and the story is delightful. I loved it so much, I went and bought Anna Dewdney's other Llama Llama book.

We have had a copy of this book for about three years now and it still gets requested regularly. In fact my 4 year old son takes this book with him to Grandma's house for over nighters and on the road with us on family trips. He repeats the lines like lyrics to a song. It has a little "scariness" to it but I think that is what both of my kids like. They like to be a little scared as long as they know that it all worked out in the end.

This is THE favorite bedtime book at our house. I can't say that every kid would react the same way. However, it is worth the time to find out if kids actually look forward to bedtime rather than fighting it.

I purchased "Llama, Llama Mad At Mama" to read to my grandchildren, granddaughter 3 & grandson 2 at the time. They loved it so much I bought another & gave them each a copy. My grandson could identify with it. I searched for "--Red Pajama" at Barnes & Noble & purchased it to have at my house for them. They love it! I purchased another "--red Pajama" for my grandson's 3rd birthday & it is his favorite book. Scary? Ridiculous! My granddaughter is very sensitive to sad or scary stories & movies & she loves these books. I highly recommend the books. I have a grandbaby on the way & will be buying him/her these books as a shower gift, (Mom is a kindergarten teacher & she likes them too!) I'll be checking out other books by this author.

My daughter, who is now 22 months old, was not a big fan of this book in the beginning. We simply couldn't get to the end of it. The pages where baby llama sits in the dark waiting for his mama caused her serious anxiety and she kept saying No! Eventually I managed to get across the point of the story that "Mama Llama's always near, even when she's not here". Now it's the latest most popular bedtime story. I love the rhythm of the story, and quite often rephrase my favorite verse for "Anna, Anna, Anna, stop this drama, and be patient with your mama". Anna laughs, and drama of the moment stops.

My son LOVES this book. We read it at least 3 times before going to bed, it's really cute, gets him to talk about being afraid to go to sleep, it's a new favorite!

A fantastic book about form in three basic lifting movements and some other helpful practices like pull/chin ups,dips etc. Mark writes this with passion and insists on details.I am very satisfied with this book and the price is great !

this is an excellent product and every one will learn something from this book, it is a must read for someone about to start on his/her lifting career. Buy it now. No I have not been paid to say this either. Cheers Spud Murphy

If you listen to Coach Rippetoe and do what he tells you to do, you will get stronger than you ever have before. I have lifted weights off and on for years, never progressing in such a common-sense and linear way as I have since I started the Starting Strength program. If you read this book and do what it tells you to do, you will absolutely be stronger than you were before you knew the stuff in the book. I used to think I knew how to lift weights, I knew NOTHING until I read this book.

Starting Strength has been a real help in my effort to get stronger. It is NOT just for young athletes but us older ones too....I'm 50!

After years of hit and miss weight training where I never really broke through my plateaus and was constantly frustrated, I found out about Rippetoe's starting strength. In one year I increased all my lifts beyond my wildest dreams and am now training for powerlifting competitions.

The book is funny and well written, and unmatched for the depth and clarity given to each lift and each topic. But it with Practical Programming and you will never need another book on strength training.

Life the Universe and everything it is. This book will change your life for ever on many levels. Well written social comedy. It's too bad Douglas Adams is no longer on this earth, truly one of the great writers of all time.

i really enjoyed the movie, and had always wanted to read the book, so i finally purchased a copy to read.of course many think you should read the book before seeing the movie version, but i become interested in the book until i'd seen the movie. i'm glad i finally purchased one, much more info, and behind the scenes. i'm still reading it, but am very impressed soo far. i'd recommend this book to anyone.lots of fun.

This book is the ultimate litmus test as to whether the reader is ready to be happy and have joy in his life, or whether he wants to keep crying in his beer.

If this book does not have you falling down on the floor laughing, then chuck it in.

I realize I'm probably one of the last people on the planet to discover this wonderful book, but I got to sing its praises, too. One of the best books I've read in a long time, and fitting as I am also suddenly into Doctor Who, which is quite similar. The Earth is destroyed one horrible Thursday in order to build a hyperspatial express route, and Arthur Dent and his friend Ford (who was stranded on Earth for fifteen years) start hitchhiking around the galaxy. Never have I read a book so clever and imaginative (dealing with the meaning of life pondered by mice, nuclear bombs turning into sperm whales, depressed robots and hyper-friendly computers) with such a clever and hilarious style (pokes great fun at our little species). Grade: A+

Our friend here is simply the best humorist printed on paper during the second half of the twentieth century.

Mark Twain and Bierce Ambroce should see him as a counterpart in heaven (or hell) I recommend this book to any reader, even if that English is not their native language, like me.

Ranma Saotome is a boy who fell into a Jusenkyo spring called "Spring of drowned girl." Because of that he turns into a girl when splashed with cold water. (Hot water reverses the change.) He's not the only one though. There's his father Genma (Panda), Ryoga Hibikami (Black pig called, P-Chan), Mousse (duck), Shampoo (Cat), and more. Since Ranma can be a boy or a girl, you could guess he has many fiance's. As a boy he has, Kodachi Kuno, Akane Tendo, Ukyo, Shampoo and a few others that like him. As a girl there's Tatewaki Kuno, and some boys who like him. (as a girl.) Read about how Ranma got his phobia of cats, and how he goes threw life as half girl half boy. There are 36 in the series. I've read them all! So can you! Read Ranma 1/2, By:Rumiko Takahashi. I could'nt put it down.

While staying there Ranma came in to many other enouncements.
My favorite part of the book was when Ranma thought Akane looked cuter with shorter hair because they start off hating each other but toward the end they start to like each other.
I would recommend this story to people who want a quick read and who like manga books because it is about a one day reading book and it a manga book. Also I would recommend it because it is a good book and funny too.

Ranma ½ is about great martial artist boy named Ranma Saltome. Ranma find out that his father and a friend of his father made arrangements for him and one of the three Tendo Children to be married, but once they meat Ranma is not he really is but he is a girl. This is because Ranma and his father fell into a cursed pond and every time Ranma is touched with cold water, he turns into a GIRL!

Ranma is now forced to marry a 16-year-old girl named Akane Tendo but they do not really get along. (Ranma think Akane is a tomboy and Akane thinks Ranma is a jerk) Ranma and Akane try to get along but something always goes wrong. This is mostly because Akane has so many admirers, which always leads to a fight.

Most likely Ranma ½ is my favorite book ever. This is because of all the action, romance and comedy there is in this book. Also, I love to read this book because once you get to the end you will want to read the next one and the next and the next.

In the book Ranma 1/2 volume 1 there were many things I liked and only one thing that I didnt like.
One thing I liked about the book was the amount of humor. one example of this humor was when Ranma and the upperclassman were fighting and Ranma kept throwing food at him. Another funny part in the book was when the girls sister sold pictures of her to the upperclassman.
The only thing that I didnt like about the book was it was a little short, but there are like 37 of the books in the series so that makes it o.k.
In conclusion Ranma 1/2 is a great book and I would definetly recommend this book to anybody that likes humor and action because this book has both of them and then some.

Oswald Chambers gives the awesome truths of the Bible and God's character in this easy, daily study.

If I had to make a choice of only one book that I could have in addition to my Bible "My Utmost for His Highest" would be it. Next to the Bible, this book has had the greatest impact on my understanging of what is means to walk with Jesus.

I have an old copy of this book and love it, but it was bulky to travel with. I love the paper back version of the book and the new updated language. A wonderful companion for my spiritual journey.

I have been studying this book for 6 years and sharing it with others. Oswald Chambers was an exceptional writer, bible scholar, and teacher. This book has given me great insight and direction to walk as a Christian daily.

I highly recommend this book for everyone! The lessons really hit home and are applicable to all lives at all stages.
