This is a great reference for those painters and students of painting to study the effects of light, the graphic portrayal(s) of light and the great tonal understanding of a variety of subjects. Ms Willis has authored a few books, and this stands as one of the absolute best on the subject of Watercolors and realistic painting.

A Really Wonderful Book

Review Date: 2006-01-26
This is a great book for anyone who has ever lived on a farm or visited grandma or an uncle on their farm as a child. While a sad reminder that we don't always value our heritage, the photographer really captures the spirit of abandoned buildings across southern Indiana. I flipped through this book very quickly the first time and then have gone back and studied the photos one or two at a time. He doesn't clutter up the presentation with a lot of words but takes a moment here and there to give some information that would add something significant. This is one we'll keep in the family library.

A Little People book perfect for little people
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.

For those of you already familiar with the Fisher-Price Little People, this adorable book will fit right in to your little person's world. Its small size, colorful illustrations and flaps to lift on each page will delight any little one, and the rhyming text makes it fun to read for the caregiver. The horse, pig, cow, sheep, chicken and farmer are mirror images of the characters from the Little People Red Barn toy (Fisher-Price), and under each flap is printed the sound that each animal makes. So it is a fun book to teach or re-enforce animal sounds to your infant or toddler. I highly recommend this cute little book.

A Teenager Without Angst

Review Date: 2007-01-22
Ostensibly a coming of age story of a 16-year old girl, the Little White Mouse series by writer and artist Paul Sizer is in reality a far ranging, emotionally complex tale of the the power of hope and self-belief to overcome loneliness, doubt, and despair.

When Loo crash lands on Mining Satellite 713 after the space liner taking her and her sister P'heng to the Galactic Science Academy explodes, she finds herself completely alone, except for a pair of overprotective droids and the possible ghost of a previous inhabitant. There's no crew, no communications in or out, and the main computer running the station is rather hostile to Loo's borrowing of the station's technology. Sizer frequently dips into Loo's past with extended flashbacks and dream sequences to demonstrate the building of her personality into a core of strength to face such a dire situation with ingenuity, humor and irrepressible gumption. There are several side stories addressing corporate corruption, urban decay and the tribulations of love, but the star of the show is always Loo and her journey through the worst of circumstances, keeping her head up all the way and inspiring others.

The graphic style of the book is half-way to manga. Sizer frequently pokes fun at his own artistic style by bringing on the full manga treatment, while Loo complains that she "looks like Hello Kitty" when he does. The tone of the writing balances perfectly between poignant philosophizing and slapstick humor, knowing just when to switch from one to the other. Sizer does leave some loose ends, sometimes intentionally, sometimes as a result of too much meat in the stew.

Little White Mouse is categorized as a youth title, and would be a superb gift to any teenager or pre-teen, both girls and boys. But any adult should ignore the youth title appellation and pick up this collection of the complete series. At the end, it was hard to say goodbye to Loo Th'eng and her friends and family, and her positive attitude towards life lingers with the reader long after the book is returned to the shelf.

Splendid book of photos

If you're interested in England before WWII, this is a great book to add to your library. I'd been reading a lot of books about France and England in the 1930's, and saw this one for sale here, used, and bought it. This is primarily a book of photographs, and the pictures capture the way things were before the war, for Society at least, and you get the idea they didnt think their way of life was at all threatened by the changes happening in Germany. This is an old book, out of print, so the condition wont be great, but it doesnt much matter. Get a copy if you can. The one I bought was in average condition, but interestingly, it was signed by the author.

Loosen Up Your Watercolours for a fresh new look

"Loosen Up You Watercolours" is a welcome addition to my library. Judi Whitton, a professional artist, has captured a lively and loose style with her practical projects and her step-by-step demonstrations. It is a logical next step after learning to handle watercolors in a basic beginner, tight style. Her manner is intuitive and spontaneous. The book is filled with numerous full and half-page colorful illustrations that will provide inspiration for any watercolor enthusiast to pick up their brush and watercolors and paint along with Judi. If you have admired the Charles Reid style of painting, you will like this UK artist. From the flap of her book, she states her work can be seen at www.watercolour.co.uk.

A very dark British comedy.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1998-11-18
This play seems to be the logical evolution of the play Arsenic and Old Lace. Written in the sixties for the British stage, it was panned in its first production. However a year and a half later, as its author was about to give up hope, a new production opened and met with great success. Loot is fairly brief at only two acts, yet is brimming with its delicious brand of sin. The scenario begins with an atmosphere of apparent darkness but quickly reveals its hilarious undertones. By the end of the play the reader/audience has unconsciously become a part of the morally bereft world which Orton creates. Its no matter though because you are crying with laughter.

This is a wonderful showcase of art glass produced by an extraordinary man and his family. Charles Lotton has a gift and, although I can't own many pieces of his work, having the book is very nice.

Copiously illustrated review of 57 major works
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-10-28
This is a concise and copiously illustrated paperback survey on only 176 pages in of all major buildings and projects from 1874 to 1924 published under ISBN: 3760881319 by Artemis (Zürich) and 1874056153 by Artemis (Boston), and under ISBN: 3764355743 by Birkhäuser (Basel...) English and German side by side. Following 37 pages with analysis of the architect's style, each of the presented 57 works is headed by a description from as little as just a few lines to over a page long followed by illustrations from one to several depending on work's scope. All of 210 only B&W multi-picture illustrations - at least a half of them technical (plans, sections, sketches, elevations, etc.), but also B&W photos of a good quality - are well balanced, superbly crisp and perfectly legible. On several pages at the end, there are: a biography, selected bibliography, list of works, etc. Like all from the Studio Paperback series, this book is solid among architectural monographs even of a bigger size. Similar to smaller books from the Works and Projects series published by Gustavo Gili (GG) in English and Spanish.
