V is for Victory

Early one morning a fews days after the bombing of Pearl Harbour, the phone rang at Walt Disney's house. The Studio called to tell him that 700 army troops had set up camp at the Walt Disney studio campus, in order to protect the nearby airfield. The long war hurt the Disney company many way, including the loss of key staff to the armed forces, reduction in commercial output and attendance, and cuts in overseas theatrical releases of their films. Despite these issues that could have caused resentment of the wars interference in Disney growth and success, the company dove in to do their part to support the war effort.

Whether it was in producing great war time comedy animated shorts such as "Der Fuhreres Face" to keep up the public morale; or educational films to teach soldiers how to operate a certain weapon or avoid disease; or deeply researched theory films like "Victory Through Airpower"; or animated shorts that promoted war bonds... the studio worked overtime to do their part.

But one of the most personal efforts they produced, free of charge, was the design of original artistic logos for the troops. These were used on individual planes, tanks, and ships. They also helped draft designs for organized armoured units, air wings and squadrons, infantry units and others.

This book chronicles the war effort by the studio, the tremendous cost the war had on the studio and setback on their growth as they suffered along with the rest of America. The beautiful color photos reproduce the actual designs in page after page of color photos. A wonderful book for the Disneyphile, OR for those that are interested in unit design artwork from planes, etc. from WWII.

If you want to see the actual logos they made, the book "Disney Dons Dogtags: The Best of Disney Military Insignia from World War II" focuses on that aspect of the Disney war effort and features more of the actual logos than any other.

I highly reccomend and give 5 stars.

If you own the Donvier Ice Cream Maker, you _need_ this book. It has a lot of wonderful recipes for various ice creams, sorbets, parfaits as well as suggestions for using your ice cream maker to chill Margaritias(!). There are "light" versions of lots of the recipes, including a light verson of one of James Beard's favorite ice cream recipes.
The book also has a lot of old sepia photographs of old fashioned ice cream makers and ice cream socials, so it is a cultural shift from just going to the 7-11 and buying a pint of Ben and Jerry's "Chubby Hubby".
And don't you _really_ want to know how to make fried ice cream balls? You _know_ you do - buy this book and learn how to make this impressive dessert.

I'm 25 years old and have been drawing and doodling since I was a child. I tended to draw things somewhat realistically and saved whimsical doodles for school notebooks and personal affects. This book proves how whimsical drawings are very appropriate for professional print, web publishing, greeting cards, and art. They allow the reader to develop their own style, while teaching fundamentals and many styles. Examples in the book are taught step-by-step in about three or four simple steps at most. Sophistication can be added with scenery, color, paint style, line style, and other stylization. This book also provides a good basis for vector art on a computer. I've currently been using Adobe Illustrator software, for my own drawings- drawing in black ink on one layer, and copying and pasting the same thing on a layer below. Then I reverse everything on the bottom layer so that there are no longer outlines, but filled shapes, and change the color of each shape accordingly, and slightly distort them so that they appear slightly offset or jiggled. This creates a nice effect. For drawing on paper I like using Millenium brand pens, as they don't smear and are pretty waterproof. This creates a great line so that if watercolors are used, the ink outline won't run. I commend the author and throroughly enjoyed the book. The accessories that come with the book are great but I mostly use the book for vector art to print. I highly recommend this book for those who desire inspiration, are afraid to make mistakes in drawing, or who wish to add personal flair to greeting cards and other media.

A Dragon in a Wagon
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2003-08-03
In this story a girl named Megan opens a book and agrees to go for a ride with the dragon in a wagon she sees inside the book. Megan and the dragon have horrible luck because they continuously have to change vehicles. First the wagon does not go very far... so they hop into a car. After the car they get on a bus, then a boat, then a sled, next a truck, a train, a plane, parachutes, and a hot air balloon. As they change vehicles they slowly meet more people/animals who accompany them throughout the book. For example: on the bus they meet a horse and a fat hippopotamus. Note: on the very last page of the book are pictures of all the different vehicles Megan rode on with the corresponding word and a title `You can read these words with Megan.'

This story is told in a neat way. Except in one place, every other sentence rhymes. Excepting that one place, the story flows very smoothly. The pictures are bold and colorful, even if the animals are not drawn to size (the horse is bigger than the hippo). I especially like the way the plane has a face.

Beautiful book...if you can find it

This book has been out of print for some time, but I would highly suggest tracking it down and buying it -well worth the effort. The book basically goes through a brief history of dragons, devils, and imps depicted from many different countries and time periods. The chapters include imagery of the Far East, Classical Greece, and even Nordic legends. Wonderful photos and a clear and understandable text make this highly enjoyable and educational. It is a real treat, makes a great gift for art historians and others interested in the classics. I highly recommend it!

Beautiful and inspiring instruction on becoming an artist of visual language.

This instructional and inspirational book will enhance your creative power of expression. The volume is from the Abrams Studio Series published by the distinguished art and illustrated book publisher Harry N. Abrams. The oversized book has more than 150 images, beautiful full-color illustrations, drawings and diagrams; also included are a glossary, index and further reading suggestions.

Drawing is fundamental to an artist or designer's ability to create and communicate his or her understanding of the world in the language of the visual. More than 20,000 years old, drawing is older than writing as a human activity for expression. Mickelwright , an artist whose work is in collections in several countries, skillfully teaches the artist how to transform his or her concept of reality into visual representation.

I was rather surprised at how thin and small the blank journal is. But I love it. The front cover is from a fairly famous painting called Flaming June by Frederic Lord Leighton. I love this painting and was happy to see this on a blank book. I do wish I could get more copies of this book or that someone thinks of making a bigger version of this with more pages. Thank you Amore for coming out with a beautiful book. I haven't written in it yet because it's so pretty but I know eventually I will.

Bill Millars book may not please all who use the term "rhythm and blues" is a equivalent to anything recorded by urban Black Americans on the pop charts.

Yes, he favors the original R&B sound but his deep insights into the cultural, finacial, and almost political roots of soul and fall of R&B are bound to give most readers a new perspective on black American music after WWll.

His distictions between soul and R&B are clear, poignant, and reveals that many of don't know just who calls the shots in public opinion making about popular culture.

The book has a broad range and excellent photos.

It's the dark side of moon history of soul music and R&B; we all know it's there but don't see it.
