Art and poetry meet.

I have read this book, and believe it is quite telling of the man and his life as an artist, and a man who saw the Great War and was changed.

My grandfathers both fought in the Great War, and never told me about it. I learned more from reading this book, or with the book on the Army Engineers he penned than any other.

Nellie May Rowe: conceptual art and transcendental imagery
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1999-03-01
In January I visited New York City for a few days. One night my friend and I happened to walk past the Museum Of American Folk Art, and saw something going on inside that involved wine and cheese. We took the bait, paid our admission/donation and joined the tour of the exhibit, which to our tremendous enjoyment, was the artwork of Nellie May Rowe,. The tour was given by the author of this book, Lee Kogan. Not only was this most definitely one of the best things I ever did on the spur of the moment, but the book is one of the nicest things I ever purchased on impulse.

Nellie May Rowe's art combined with Lee Kogan's insight make for a powerful and strangely personal experience. We are given mystifyingly beautiful portraits of a woman's inner life and outer circumstance. The images embrace and thereby transcend the small human details that , by the nature of the beast itself, exist to be integrated into what I believe is the creation of real magic. Real magic doen't take shortcuts.

Lee Kogan graciously signed the book for my daughter, saying that Nellie May Rowe's energy, spirit and marvelous art inspire us all, and this is certainly true: If I may be so bold as to take a quote from the book, from the writings of James Baldwin: "..go back to where you started, or as far back as you can, examine all of it, travel your road again and tell the truth about it. Sing or shout or testify or keep it to yourself; but know whence you came"

Yeah. What he said. Anyways, do right by yourself, get your own copy because I'm not gonna be lending out mine anytime soon!

An interesting take on life

I really enjoyed this tale of how life came to be. It is both a simple way to help kids come to terms with existence and another way for adults to accept and appreciate the life we have been given. The poems that are also included explore the emotions that we face in our daily lives in the author's own style. A book that can be read over and over.

The Arts & Crafts Studio of Dirk Van Erp =Dorothy Lamoreux

This catalog view of the work of Dirk Van Erp is without equal - the photographs alone, of Van Erp, his wife, children, and co-worker Craftsmen...to say nothing of the views of his shop and salesroom, are priceless. The book fills a large gap in the public record of the seminal work of this, the second-most important Arts and Crafts figure in North America (after - or before, if you will, Elbert Hubbard).

It has been estimated that there are less than two thousand extant Van Erp pieces in the world today. I feel that a reading of Dorothy Lamoreux's excellent book will make we happy owners - and the rest - appreciate the passion that went into their creation.

Buy this book. STEAL this book. Read it, surely.

Sarah Jones has definitely provided great insight into the "recording industry". With this book you are able to get a bird's eye view of the "real" industry. She explains in great detail of the work required to succeed in this very fickle business. If you are looking for the recording industry to be de-mystified, this book is for you. Hats off to this lady, she knows what she is talking about!

refreshing American Memories, ... for trying times
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2002-03-06
The first resident historian at the renovated landmark Astoria Studios (APC), and then at the associated new American Museum of the Moving Image (AMMI), noted film scholar Richard Koszarski brought to life here an engaging early chronicle of a New York chapter of pictorial highlights in celebrating the best in American media. Published nearly twenty years before this age of grim Taliban influences and videogame savageries, it may be time again for us to reflect on a new sequel of refreshing views and memories in these serial chapters of American media culture.

Guidebook to the Astral Realms
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-06-06
Among adepts this remarkable book is simply refered to as "Manual No.5" (that was it's old Theosophical Society designation.) When it was penned in 1894 this book was unique. This is because prior to that time all books on the subject were traditionlly written in an obscure and metaphorical manner. Bishop Leadbeater changed all that- he took 19th century scientific objectivism and applied it to the most mystical and subjective of studies. The result is a virtual Baedecker (travel book) of the astral realms. As a result this was the first modern English language text to be included in the permanent collection of the Brotherhood. This book opened, and continues to open, doors.

Briefly, this little volume, covers: scenary, inhabitants, and phenomena of the astral realm. Since this is the realm most closely in contact with our own it can be a most useful and practical guide book. For instance, you will find summarised here more real facts on black magicians, elementals, shades, vampires, and werewolves than in many thicker, more modern volumes. Indeed, a pocket sized hard cover of this manual is quite convenient to carry at all times as a review, and passport....
