Transfers to give your embroidery, etc. lots of ideas
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-28
With 36 pages of iron-on transfers to embroider, you will need to put your thinking cap on so you can come up with great design combinations of your own. Then put them on things like clothing, linens, hats or handbags. When you run out of things to use them on, think again! Only this time think appliqué, wood burning or fabric paint! The ideas are endless.

Embroidery thread now comes in so many types from the "regular" thread to metallics, jewels, antique pearlescent, fluorescent and don't forget "glow in the dark". You will have so many ways to use these transfers that you may not know where to begin.

The first two pages are general instructions on the basic transfer of the patterns to making sure you have all the supplies you need to begin. The next pages shows seven embroidery stitches with graphics if you don't know how to do them or if you need to refresh your memory. There is a six-page gallery of projects that have been created using the transfers in 200+ FUN AND FUNKY EMBROIDERY DESIGNS.

The transfers themselves range from cats, birds, insects, borders, hearts, flowers, Southwest, seasonal, welcome signs and a whole array of fonts. Combine several or use them alone. Outline or fill them in. Do them in a single color or their actual colors.

The possibilities are never-ending. Grab a hoop and just begin!

Kooler Christmas is XS fun for stitchers
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-13
I bought 201 Cross-Stitch Christmas Designs on "chance" -- you know how it is without seeing pictures and not quite certain if it's going to be another one where you think once it arrives "I paid perfectly good money for this?!"

Anyway, I took a chance -- as a general rule I do like the Kooler Design Studio items -- they suit my taste (look good, not that complicated -- specifically, no blended threads though I've done so on my own occasionally) ... so, I picked this one and was delightfully surprised.

Things I liked:

#1) nice pages. The paper is glossy and not cheap.
#2) all items are shown stitched
#3) the patterns immediately follow the photographs.

So, if you see a design that catches your eye, within a page or three you'll have the pattern. The patterns are in chronological order as per the photos -- I don't like hunting things down, so this was a real bonus for me.

#4) (probably the most important criteria for me as a stitcher) The patterns are LARGE, easy to read and follow.

Another thing that's nice is that in the numbers part (you know, where they show us the symbol and give us the color numbers? -- that!)
It shows us first of all a small block with the color, then both Anchor and DMC and backstitching (there's a bit of that and it really does make things stand out nicely!) is shown in color too.

I particularly liked the color blocks as of late I seem to be weakening (buying silk floss) so I'm able to substite with relative ease.

The patterns are shown in color -- BIG too. My eyes are not so young any more (or maybe my arms got shorter?) so having a chart I can see right from the get-go (without taking to a photo blow-up place) is a real bonus to me.

More pattern stuff: these are smaller patterns (quickies, but don't look cheap) -- most 20x40 or so, though a few are much larger. Many many though could be done for ornament exchanges and even your own tree. In scanning, the largest is 100x50 (a "Merry Christmas" sign with a red cardinal) and a couple others but mostly smaller/easier to do/faster finishes. They are not tacky though (read that as a bit of shading versus solid colors)

One more thing: The Santas are real (not those stick figures that became popular a few years back) -- these have meat to their bones and nice round tummies!

I liked mine book and you will too. This one's a keeper!
128 pages, all in color. Published by "The Needlecraft Shop" (and yes, I'll be looking for more)

The only "problem" I've had so far is trying to pick the first to stitch. To resolve this, I've opened to a random page and voila: Page 56 -- couldn't decide if the Christmas Tree or the Bird houses should be "first" so I'm doing both! Yes, I am weak, and having lots of fun too.

Enjoy!

skilled photographs of old and disappearing Midwest architectural features
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-12-03
Bower's clean, sharply-focused photographs capture architectural features of older Indiana, Midwest buildings. Among these are window frames, stairways and bannisters, stain-glass and decorative windows, floral and animal ornaments, floor boarding, friezes, cupolas, and weathervanes, among other features. There's also a few photos of railroad bridges, cranes, and old, wooden amusement-park rides. The 200 photos with their duotone shading have a nostalgic tone. Most of the buildings are still in use. Some clearly have been long abandoned and are in the last stages of their survival. Though it is time, not the wrecker's ball, that will bring them down. For these and others that will likely be abandoned before too long, Bower's photographs are a record of the styles and details of a late 1800's/early 1900's country and small-town architecture of the American Midwest.

These are interesting videos

Review Date: 2007-10-29
Haven't seen this one yet as it is a gift have have others in the series. These are really interesting videos. These are standard computer CD's. Each one has a menu of various locations or scenes. When you select a scene the computer displays a picture of the site from an artificially wide angle. This warps the view slightly but you get used to it. The picture will then pan around 360 degrees. You can also manually change the view. The image is essentially 360 degrees laterally and vertically so you can point image anywhere you want in any direction. No part of the camera or any equipment appear in any picture. Its as if you were standing at the location and could look up or down or around as you please. The photography is excellent. If they make enough of these you wonder if you'll ever have to actually go and see for yourself.

This is a fantastic cross stitch book for beginners or those more advanced. The patterns are extremely attractive and many can be done in an evening or two. I have searched for other similar cross stitch books and have not found one that compares in terms of the attractiveness of the finished products! Any cross stitch lover should have this book!
