A great hiking book - describes what it is truly like

I have not read a book that more accurately describes the long (medium)distance hiking experience better. In addition it is one of the best descriptions of the LT found. I finshed a section hike of the Long Trail last October and reading this book took me back to the joys and troubles, the shelters and summits. A great read

A wonderful book to read before you go backpacking to grasp what might be expected on a long trip. It was packed with information about the interactions between people and nature. It was interesting to read while giving me insight on the trail. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys nature and backpacking!

The Fox and the Hound

"The Fox and the Hound" is a book based on the "Disney" cartoon "The Fox and the Hound." It's about a fox and a hound who become the best of friends, but there owners won't allow it. The age level for this book is 7-9 years of age. The lesson this book teaches is, friends help friends no matter what. Or, best friends are forever. I think this is a very cute book for children to read.

A true life story, very sad..

An Even More In-Depth Coverage of Bacon's Infamous Studio
Helpful Votes: 27 out of 29 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-04
Though there have been several excellent books written about the contents of Francis Bacon's 7 Reece Mews studio in London, the birthplace of his masterpiece paintings that still haunt the public and the historian minds, this hefty volume by Margarita Cappock offers more. Originally conceived as the book to document the 1998 move of Bacon's studio form Kensington, London to the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin where it remains an historic site, Cappock sorts and sifts through the bits of treasure and trash that influenced Bacon's inspiration for his future paintings.

Cappock betters the other books on this subject by illuminating the chards and tatters that most significantly influenced Bacon's thought development and because the book is so extensively illustrated, she is able to place side by side the instigating artifacts with the complete works. This book is by far the most intensive and exhaustive study of the influence of Bacon's studio and its detritus on the evolution of Bacon's paintings and as such belongs in the library of all Bacon scholars and enthusiasts. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, March 06

The first in-depth survey of Bacon's 7,000+ piece studio

His London studio, portrayed on the cover of FRANCIS BACON'S STUDIO, may look like a mess, but Francis Bacon was one of the most significant post-war painters and his studio, both home and workplace, was key to producing his art. His studio housed thousands of items central to his works and has been untouched since his death in 1992: it was donated in 1998 to the Dublin City Gallery and today curators have made it into a showpiece and work of art itself. The studio's deconstruction revealed over 7,500 objects from photos to illustrated publications, slashed canvases and his final unfinished work: FRANCIS BACON'S STUDIO provides the first in-depth survey of the studio and is essential for art library holdings and any student of Bacon's works.

Definitive and Fun Guide to Circus Sideshow Banner Art!
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-11
This terrific book celebrates the (now) lost world of Circus Sideshow banner art. This book includes illustrations for such classic Circus Sideshow acts as the Alligator-Skin Girl, the Amazing Eeka, the Sword Swallower, the Rubber-Skin Man, and, of course, everybody's favorite cover girl, Sweet Marie, the world-renowned Fat Lady. This book also includes biographical information about the artists who created these amazing works of folk art such as Snap Wyatt, Johnny Meah, Fred Johnson, and Jack Cripe. This book is a surprisingly serious treatment of this little-known corner of the folk art world. (The authors convincingly link various visual elements in the sideshow banners to 17th Century Flemish portrait painting and Japanese wood-block prints!) This is a really fun book that every folk art fan will really love. The book contains 70 color illustrations and a total of 35 pages of essays. Incidentally, although I bought this book because of my interest in folk art, this book will also certainly appeal to circus enthusiasts and collectors of circus memorabilia.

If you like to bake breads of all kinds, especially rich-textured or unusual ones, but don't have a lot of time, this book is definitely for you. Celtic breads are quick breads (they use soda instead of yeast), and are wonderful in flavor and texture. The recipes are clear and easy to use, and most of the time use common ingredients like oats, wheat bran, or potatoes. Sometimes, ingredients such as barley flour may be a little more difficult to find. Even so, there are many wonderful recipes you can try. My personal favorite is Oat Farls (a farl is a wedge cut from a circle). I highly recommend this book!

All 3 kids LOVED these books!

I am the great auntie to a 4, 5, and 7 year old. From pre-school to 1st grade, all three kids LOVE these books! They come home and during reading time with their mom or dad each one makes sure they get their turn! I love to call and have them "read a book to me" over the phone and they love doing it. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this set of five books to every parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, cousin, friend.... Well worth buying new if you can't find used. These spoiled little darlings have about 200 children's books (ok, so I bought most of them), and these are everyone's #1 favorite!!! The 5-year old had a "weak reading skills" report card, and he was the first one tonight to haul out these books and force his mom to start reading time---WOW---need I say more?

My 3 1/2 year old absolutely loves these books. He spins the wheel around and sounds out all the different rhyming words. The stories are fun and engaging and the illustrations are adorable. Great for teaching young children the basics of phonics.

A PITCH PURRFECT READING

Many are familiar with gifted actor Edward Herrmann. He has numerous screen and TV appearances to his credit, and appears in Martin Scorcese's latest film "The Aviator." Perhaps he is most fondly remembered for his portrayal of FDR. From President Roosevelt to Garfield the cat? It's easy if you're as talented as Herrmann. His reading is fun, captivating and pitch purrfect.

We find Garfield living in the lap of luxury. Everything a feline could fancy is within paws reach, from his favorite dish, lasagna, to the TV remote control. His master, Jon Arbuckle, takes excellent care of his furry friend.

However, Jon can't resist a request from his gal pal to take in Odie, a stray dog not gifted with Garfield's wisdom. Jon is paying too much attention to this canine intruder, and then, of all things, the ditzy dog disappears.

Maybe Old, Maybe Dated, but still very good.

Review Date: 2006-08-13
I have the 1974 edition of this book. If this edition is the same or similar, it is a valuable overview and reference work for anyone interested in the German Army (Heer) of WWII. It is of a much higher standard than many recent works encountered (names withheld to spare the guilty).

W.J.K. Davies is able to succinctly cover Divisional organization, weapons, and tactics in one, 176 page, volume. While not going into any great depth, the information, such as German chart and tactical symbols (also used on vehicles), and their meaning, are an important rare find. Most of the book covers "Equipment" (Chapter 5) and "The Men and their Accoutrements" (Chapter 6).

It's too bad more people have not read his work. He clearly explained the difference between Wehrmacht and Heer over 30 years ago. Yet, virtually everyone is still making the same mistake...

Seems very genuine information

I borrowed a copy of this book from my local library for the purpose of research for Wargaming (a strategy game played with scale models) The information in general was first class. Some of the info. I have not been able to find in other books. There is detail on vehicles of the German army, Which was & is my primary interest. The historical background, organisation of the Army, tatictics, Equipment -- The list is not endless but it it seems comprehensive, Detailed, Genuine

We were first introduced to the Geronimo Stilton series with an audio book from a Wendy's kid's meal and fell in love with the series. My children (4 and 2 years) love listening to the audio books in the car and there is enough adult humor to the books so parents will enjoy listening to them too. Edward Herrmann does a wonderful job narrating these books.

In the third volume of Girl Genius, Agatha and everyone else aboard the city airship Castle Wulfenbach fight for their lives against an infestation of Slaver Wasps, revenant spies, a vicious pirate, and the world's most vicious and fearsome nanny. The loony pseudo-Victorian world of Sparks (mad scientists) and monsters takes a terrifying turn. Agatha's life is again turned upside down as her fascinating newfound world turns hostile.

There's less romance and more adventure in this volume. In the last few pages, it even turns brutal (but not beyond PG-13). It's still every bit as great as the first two volumes, and even deeper with the new conflicts, characters, and complications.

I've read every type of comics around for fifty years, and this is now my favorite of all times. Volume four comes out late in 2005, and I can barely wait. Of course, you can find some of what's going on by reading some of the comic on the Girl Genius Online Web site, along with a portal to the other works of the brilliant Foglios.

Poor Agatha!

Agatha Heterodyne's adventures continue, as she tries to escape the flying Zeppelin/castle of Baron Wulfenbach.

Along the way, she meets Crosp, the Napoleon of Cats; Young Lord Wulfenbach, the Baron's handsome & lovestruck son; & Othar Tryggvassen, a "hero" whose plan to save the day involves killing everyone, including himself. Not to mention the Baron's Nanny, whose bionic additions make her a cross between Mary Poppins & a chainsaw-wielding psychopath.

And since Castle Wulfenbach is a giant Zeppelin, there's only one way for our plucky heroine to go--straight down!
