A cheerful picturebook

Fish Kisses and Gorilla Hugs is a cheerful picturebook about a six-year-old boy who imagines every excuse he can to delay his bedtime. His mom knows he's stalling; she takes the opportunity to play a silly, friendly game of kisses, hugs, pinches, and pokes, all inspired by their favorite animals. Broad, colorful, yet simply themed artwork practically leaps off the page in this charming read-aloud storybook ideal for just before bedtime.

Very cute, interactive bedtime story

This is an adorable book about a little boy that won't settle into bed (has lots of excuses) and the tactics his exasperated but loving mother uses to coax him to stay in bed and go to sleep. Each page will have you and your child doing gorilla hugs, fish kisses, ect. along with the characters of the story. The illistrations are great and my 3 year old thinks it's hilarious. It's a fun way to end the day. Highly recommend.

Beautiful, inspirational photographs

Review Date: 2008-02-08
I first acquired this book about 30 years ago and lost it somewhere along the way. What a joy to have it back! The color photographs are beautiful and most show the intricacy of quilting designs and stitches. Some of the colors in the photographs are so vivid that the stitching is hard to see.

This is an excellent book for anyone who wants to know the history and development of Amish quilts. The 25 page introduction gives us historic background on the Amish community and explains how the Amish faith is incorporated into all facets of daily life. A subsection of text, "Geographical and Chronological Evolutions of the Amish Quilts," describes why specific communities use, or don't use, certain colors and quilt designs.

The remaining 70 pages are devoted to color photographs, usually with a minimum of two and up to five quilts over a two page spread. In writing the captions, the authors occasionally refer back to information from the introductory text to remind the reader of what is being seen - why the embroidery, why the use of different tones of color, how the quilting pattern was designed, etc. The captions also describe the fabric used and name of quilt design style, as well as an approximate date the quilt was made. This is a beautiful book.

This book provides the reader with what I feel is an indepth look at the designs used by the Amish. The spritual origins of not only the quilting but the piecing is fasinating. For any one interested in the history of Amish quilting and the influence their relgion has played in developing their quilts this is a must have book.

The fascination with American quilts continues. Of special interest to many collectors today are the boldly colored, handsomeely quilted bedcovers made by the Amish women in Pennsylvania - particularyly Lancaster County - and in the Amish communities of Ohio and Indiana.

These old Amish quilts have a dual appeal - their visual impact and their superior craftsmanship. Some students of modern art are drawn to them because their abstract geometric designs are strikingly parallel to the paintings of several contemporary artists. Other collectors treasure these quilts for their intricate, refined handiwork and their minute stitches. What is amazing, and worth exploring in this handsome book, is how the Amish women, with a limited range of materials and with limited exposure to the tastes and patterns of the "outside" world, have created enduring works of art that are visually exciting and sophisticated.

A Gallery of Amish Quilts presents for the study and enjoyment of all 150 Amish quilts in color, together with splendid balack and white photographs of the Amish people and countryside. Also, a comprehensive introduction gives the cultural and aesthetic background for the fuller enjoyment of these beautiful quilts.

We were first introduced to the Geronimo Stilton series with an audio book from a Wendy's kid's meal and fell in love with the series. My children (4 and 2 years) love listening to the audio books in the car and there is enough adult humor to the books so parents will enjoy listening to them too. Edward Herrmann does a wonderful job narrating these books.

Lots of fun for the kids!

My son who is in the first grade, received his first set of Geronimo Stilton books on c.d. from a friend. We listened to them in the car, and the entire family enjoyed the stories so much that no one was allowed to listen unless we were all present because not even the adults wanted to miss a thing! We purchased the next set of books, which delighted my son with their colorful words and illustrations, mysterious plots and exotic locations. Since then, I think we have bought a total of 28 books in the series, and my only complaint is that I have caught my son reading under his covers at 11:00 o'clock at night! Any material that encourages my children to read in their every waking moment is a winner in my book!

This book is wonderful. It is intended for people that have an interest in either graphic design or illustration. It presents the work of an amazing Japanese artist that has managed to blend in pop culture, hip hop and Motown, into his work for CD covers and party flyers. His use of digital photography and computer illustration is exciting. A must have for those interested in underground culture and great art!

Out of the myriad of webcomics I frequent, Girly is one of the few worth buying. Josh's art style is both fun and unique, and his stories range from witty and silly to downright insanity. He manages to cram lots of crazy pop culture references into his comic, along with his trademark characters we have come to love. This volume is no different from what we've come to love in Girly. The book itself is, as you might expect, the second part of Girly, with some little extras thrown in. If you're a fan, buy this book, and if you aren't, go read some Girly, then buy this book. I have mine right here, and it was without a doubt a good buy.

I enjoy quite a few web comics, but only the best are worth getting in book form. Josh has been honing his art, style, and sense of timing for years, but still retains the zany, unpredictable twists and turns that characterize the best of his early work. He makes you care about the characters without becoming sentimental, gives these characters depth without becoming ponderous, and most importantly of all, keeps me laughing through the second and third readings. Oh and the forth through twentieth readings too. For those unfamiliar with Girly, go to the web site to read the first several chapters. Then buy this book.

...and so is his artwork. Although I've only really read his comics online (http://go-girly.com/), I went through everything of his I could find the minute I discovered it. Reminiscent of such genius as Tex Avery, Lesnick has a style built from classic comic art and modern pop-culture humor. His characters are hilarious and endearing, and everything comes across with a slight insanity that reminds me John K. after eating too much over-sugared breakfast cereal. But be careful: like sugar, Josh Lesnick's work is addictive and his hiatus may leave you in a state of withdrawl. Hence the need for printed copies of his artwork - so you can get your fix whenever you need it.

A "must have" for anyone interested in making a comment on art for adults as well as children!

Over eight color illustrations and photos capture everything from signage to murals and exceptional presentations. This book has heart and soul. The imagination and humor these storeowners and artists display is amazing! I especially appreciated the captions which tell the story of each storefront. The details are unexpected and funny. I also liked the Introduction which gives a great history of how San Francisco came to have so many "grand entrances." I know which book I will be giving to friends and family this holiday season!

Grand Entrances opens the door to the whimsy that is in the heart of San Francisco. The superb photographs capture the spirit of the artists, the shopkeepers who proudly display the creations, and the climate of the people who live in the area. This book rather reminded me of the children's book about the man who painted his house purple in a neighborhood where all the houses looked alike. However, in this case, everyone painted his or her storefront with wild imagination. Indeed, looking at the photos and reading the background about this era, I wondered if people at that time appreciated the beauty and creativity of the times. Personally, I savored the diversity of San Francisco. San Francisco encompasses all kinds of spirits, and this book captures that unique strength. Grand Entrances was fun!

Darling gift for a wonderful Grandparent

Review Date: 2005-04-07
This is a great gift book to give, and even better if you give it with the companion book The Gift of Being Grand. My sister bought this for my mom. I was drawn to it immediately because of the beautiful illustrations, then as you read the words inside The Gift of Being Grand you are touched by it's sweetness. I ordered both books as a gift for my mother-in-law. I now realize that I want to order another set for a mentor/friend who is also a special Grandma. The Grand-o-Grams make it easy for a busy, but loving/caring Grandparent to drop a quick note to their special someone. My kids love to get mail and I know that they will treasure these notes coming from their Grammie and Gramma. Thank you to the author for a delightful combination of sweet art, thoughtfulness and gift that keeps on giving.

Grand-O-Grams provides a beautiful way to keep in touch with grandkids - my daughter gave it to me for Easter and I love it! The book contains perforated postcards that are beautifully illustrated. There are cards for specific holidays and occasions, as well as, just for fun. Designed by Marianne Richmond, this is a unique and beautiful gift for grandparents. There is also a book called "The Gifts of Being Grand" that celebrates the gifts of being a grandparent. Again, a beautifully illustrated and thoughtful book. Either/both would be great gifts for mother's day, birthday, etc.

An all time great classic book!

Review Date: 2005-05-20
This book is one of the greatest books that I have ever read. The reason for saying this is that the book's genre, adventure, is one of my personal favorites, plus James Fennimore Cooper is my second favorite author. The book is loaded with imagery. It sparks your imagination into picturing just exactly where you are at and who is involved in the story that could possibly be around you.
When you first start reading you get caught in the elaborate setting. You are given a straight out setting of a hot summer day in July 1757. Immediately you're imagination is caught in the building of the stories plot.
I would strongly recommend this book to all ages. This book gives you some history and a lot of rising-falling action to keep you reading. There is no strong language but there is some death. It can be overcome, to read a great book. You will more than likely be stunned by the ending, because ... you'll have to read it to find out.
Once you pick up this book you won't be able to put it down. There are so many twists, surprises, and exciting spots in the book that you will want to read the rest of what is happening. Before you know what has happened you are lurched into another portion of the exciting plot. It is well written with several leads to each part of the book. You will end up wanting to read the story again to see what you missed the first time through.

Last of the Mohicans is one of the more accessible Deerslayer novels, I'll grant. But to call it unreadable and boring because no one can understand it is just plain unfair. I suggest if you find this book difficult then try acclimating yourself to more modern uses of the language at first. T.H. White is a wonderful place to start, then maybe some Patrick O'Brian, on to Dickens, maybe the Morte D'Arthur, etc... The main thing here is, of course, to get used to reading different (older) forms of the English language. Once you get into it, it's really a great experience. There's such a wealth of imagery and culture and history in this book that it'd be a shame to ignorantly toss it off as elitist or unnecessary. Just the opposite: it's mind expanding and greatly insightful. And a whole lot of fun!

As for the "apparent" outlandish price, this is NOT being charged by Amazon. It is a USED copy listed by a dealer/private individual under the pseudonym "edbdbooks".
