You won't disappointed in this book. It reads nicely about how Denise and Samual have collaborated to create their unusal jewerly. This is a extraordinary book with fold-out photos of their beautiful belts. They desribe their creative process and how Denise's cultural background has influneced their work. She shares imagaes of her family. Each pieces take many hours to create and they are a very driven couple and this is a must have books for folks who love native influnced jewlery and folks who enjoy jewelry.

I am usually interested in art books more focused on painters and it didn't occur to me that such beautiful artistic expressions could be achieved in jewelry.
In this book, Lois S.Dubin, lovingly and with extremely interesting cultural context, lays out these amazing artists that I wouldn't have otherwise come to know about.
I enjoyed looking at their art and at the same time learned a lot about the culture from which they emerged.
Many thanks to Lois S.Dubin!

My knowledge of English just isn't good enough to do justice to this artist and this book. Robert Bateman translated into paintings all the enchantment I have felt for nature since I was a child. Wish I was much younger to try to follow his footsteps!! Marvellous book!

The Art of Robert Bateman is superb & endearing.

To see a Robert Bateman work is to glimpse a moment in Nature's time when an elk treks across a vast winter landscape of snow, conifers & mountains; or a stream bank where tender green plants glow against the moist earth & a minute bird perches; or a trumpeting bull elephant confronts you in a storm of dust. Roger Tory Peterson has written an expressive introduction & Ramsay Derry's profile of the artist makes good reading - especially as he's included a history of who Robert Bateman is; where he's lived; several works-in-progress sketches; photos of the artist in action & on location. A worthy addition to your library.

This book, together with "The World of Robert Bateman" is one of the best wildlife art books ever published, and truly shows Bateman at his best. The later collections (especially the very last ones) don't even come close to the beauty of the paintings in these two books. In most paintings the animal is just one character, sometimes not even the main one, while the landscape and the surroundings (depicted in marvelous and maddening detail) almost always plays a central role. Here Bateman shows to be a master of the techniques he uses, and creates pictures of stunning beauty who truly come to life. Both books are highly highly recommended if you life "realistic" wildlife art.

Its re-appearance is perfect for collections who either don't have the original or find their lending copies worn.

THE ART OF ROBERT BATEMAN appears in its 25th anniversary edition to include text by Ramsay Derry and an introduction by noted ornithologist Roger Tory Peterson himself as it provides a stunning blend of full-page color wildlife images and accompanying artist profile. This was the artist's first book and cemented his career: its re-appearance is perfect for collections who either don't have the original or find their lending copies worn.

Satire and Crime in "Artrage" by Everett Aison

Review Date: 2006-09-09
"Van Zant closes his folder and looks at Mace, who remains silent
and impassive.
`A blue-collar kid who makes it as a top lawyer and a serious
collector. . . trashes a forty-one million dollar Picasso. Mr. Carlson,
you are on the cutting edge of inconsistency.'" (Page 24)

There is no question that Mace Carlson did the shocking crime. The hard part is the why. Also hard is the fact that in this review, it really isn't possible to say what the crime was without blowing the book. Even though, for the reader, the crime happens early on, to know in advance the specifics of the crime would remove some of the shock value. Suffice it to say that the crime is intense and no humans or animals were hurt by it.

Emotions are something else entirely. Mace's action propels him into a prolonged stay at the Rothko Suite of the New York Police Department's Art Crime Unit. With much of his time spent in solitary confinement, he has a lot of time to contemplate his action. He also has plenty of time to contemplate how his action has affected others including the son of his former lover. His case provides the fodder for a media firestorm as his action becomes a polarizing statement for both sides in the art world.

Part satire, part crime novel, the resulting read is a mesmerizing book that pulls readers along at a frantic pace. Occasionally, very graphic in terms of language, this is a novel that considers the current art world and finds things less than satisfactory. Rich in depth and character, the novel works on all levels and as a result is a very good read I wish I had read sooner.

A Thought Provoking Novel

Mace Caslon seemed to have it all. He had been a brilliant student with a full scholarship to Williams College, graduated top fifth from Yale Law School and now he is a full partner in one of the most respected law firms on Wall Street and a serious collector of contemporary art. Yet one day he walks into the Metropolitan Museum of Art and throws acid on Universal Woman, a Picasso painting which just sold for forty-one million dollars. The question is why? This is something everyone wants to know. His act puts him in the middle of a media crazed frenzy. Everyone has something to say including television personalities, artists, museum officials, collectors, dealers, lawyers, a U.S. attorney looking to enter the Senate, psychiatrists, ex-lovers and anti-art demonstrators. Everyone wants their time in the spotlight...everyone wants to know why.

Artrage is not a mystery of who-done-it but why-done-it. Thru an in depth character study Aison takes a close look at our society and it's fascination with so called "celebrities" and their fifteen minutes of fame. He lampoons the art world, art connoisseurs, the media and our society's remote control personality which cause us to latch onto whoever is in the spotlight at the moment and forget about it seconds later when the next "celebrity" comes along. Aison has created a fascinating novel filled with interesting characters and a thought provoking storyline that will leave you thinking about it long after you finish reading it.

:"Artrage" is delightful and thought-provoking.

I opened "Artrage" and very soon found myself hooked. Here's a combined realistic portrait, caricature, and merry send-up of the whole current Manhattan culture mix. I kept seeing one icon after another, most with pie in their faces or on their behinds,, but also a number of individuals ---- Mace, Margo, Nick (especially) ---- who are sympathetically drawn and who, at times, touch the heart. That's quite a feat, and it provides some fine hours and good lingering thoughts to ponder.

Artrage is an amazing exploration that takes a seemingly simple act of vandalism and expands it into a brilliant and witty examination of today's cultural perversions. The author has managed to skewer the art scene, TV shows, politics, sex - you name it. I was dazzled by his ability to move from one scene to another without any of the conventional transitions. As a reader I wasn't bothered by the author's refusal to give in to a pat explanation for the initial "crime." Aison is a true original.

An intensely engaging story, skillfully structured. Everett Aison's "Artrage" unlocked sensations I long ago encountered with Camus' "The Stranger": Mystery, Ambivalence, Motivation; and a powerfully peculiar appreciation that the world I'd anticipated is far from rational.

Harris Sklar has captured the essence of life on the backstretch. The pictures are gorgeous, and the people and horses come to life through the skillful intermingling of text and photographs. The backstretch really is a small city -- of people who work very, very hard and have dedicated their lives to chasing an elusive dream. They are out every morning, often in the worst kind of weather. Anyone who works with Thoroughbreds risks life and limb every day. This book is a tribute to their dedication. The section on Smarty Jones is compelling. My favorite picture is the one of Smarty galloping, his neck arched, the rider standing straight up in the stirrups. Talk about raw horsepower. Wow!

The track can be the height of glamour and ceremony where the genteel hang out with the touts. This book has haunting images of a whole invisible underworld society that is surprisingly complex. There is pathos and charm in these people's devotion to the horses and the challenges of producing a winner. The inside story on Smarty Jones was a special treat. Highly recommended for anyone who loves horses.

This book is a tour de force. The photographs perfectly capture the magnificence of the horses and the special relationship they have with those who care for them--a relationship that's rarely seen or appreciated by even the most avid racing fans. Sklar shows us a world few of us know (the backstretch), and it's almost uncanny how well he does it. I look forward to more work by this fine photographer. Highly recommended.

This book is about people, not only horses; an insider's view of a self-contained community little known to most of us. This is an informative, enlightening, candid exposure to the bonds between the workers and their families who RESIDE at the racetrack with each other and with the horses to which they dedicate their lives. The photographer evokes empathy from the reader because of his unusual sensitivity and stirring photos. It is a treat to enter and savor this special place.

This book entertains children in the classical sense of both pleasing and enriching. It is stimulating to the imagination and character-building. The words and illustrations fuse to create a rich atmosphere of foreboding, courage, and hope. In theme, Beowulf, the hero, uses his strength--both physical and moral--to rescue the needy. In technique, the kennings (an Old English literary device) in this adaptation carry the compelling grit and grace of the original--the grace of painful self-sacrifice.

Having taught _Beowulf_ on the high school level, I recognize the invigorating effect of heroic ideals on a developing mind and character--as well as the lack of motivation morally without such ideals. Literature like this paints personal courage vividly for children of an age more readily responsive and more likely to preserve these life-affirming attributes.

What child would not cringe when "from the marsh-mists the monster came slinking"? But never fear; the hero cries, "I am Beowulf the Geat, crusher of foes, slayer of giants, and wrestler of sea-monsters. I have come to free Heorot from evil. Do not deny me, but may victory heal your hearts."

My brother and sister in law bought this picture book of Beowulf for me for Christmas. As a librarian in an elementary school I am always on the lookout for quality literature that the children will enjoy. I remembered studying Beowulf in high school so was intrigued that it had been done in picture book format. The text is simple, yet retains poetic feel. The book has footnotes with phonemic pronunciations of the character's names and there is an appendix at the back that not only names the characters and who they are, but also defines literary terms such as epic, kenning, litotes, metonymy. The illustrations are luminous. The monster, Grendel is appropriately very dragonlike and dark. There will apparently be two more volumes that follow this, the second entitled Beowulf Book Two: The Monster's Mother.

I'm anxious to introduce this book to students who enjoy Mary Pope Osborne's Tales of the Odyssey. Tales from the Odyssey: The One-Eyed Giant - Book #1 (Tales from the Odyssey) I predict it will be checked out often and enjoyed by many students.

Captivating, no matter the age!

This book was highly anticipated in our household - our children are enamored with the stories of ferocious villains and the brave heroes who vanquish them. "Beowulf - Grendel the Ghastly" did not disappoint. The ancient story is told with beautiful word pictures that make it a delight to narrate for children not yet able to read. Our children are under the age of four (girls too!) and sit through the telling, eagerly awaiting the arrival of the fearless prince come to set free the despairing land held in the evil grip of the monster. The telling and illustrations are extremely complementary - both author and illustrator have woven together a masterful adaptation that should become a children's classic.

Beowulf: Grendel the Ghastly is not just a book for children, it's for anyone who loves a good story and beautiful art. I've read and studied Anglo-Saxon literature for years, and I can honestly say that this is among my favorite versions of Beowulf. The text, adapted for a young, non-academic audience, is fast-paced and easy to read, but still retains the beauty and much of the characteristic diction of the original. And the illustrations are simply outstanding--they're what really sell this book.

On a side note, Grendel the Ghastly only deals with the first third of Beowulf--Beowulf's arrival and defeat of Grendel--but apparently two more volumes are on their way. They'll certainly be worth the wait.

Highly recommended.

This new version of a timeless tale of bravery, told through accessible and fanciful language alongside intricate & lovely illustrations, is perfect for children everywhere who are growing to be mighty people of the world. Michelle Szobody does an excellent job of choosing words that communicate the true story of Beowulf, while keeping the "fear factor" of the piece low. The illustrations maintain the fanciful elements of the story and keep the imagination rolling with its own pictures of what lurks in corners. Extremely well done.

Before this book, the few plants we had were just barely surviving. Plants received as gifts invaribly died. It was horrible.

Then we got this book. We have filled our house with a variety of planets and our plants are doing extremely well. We now give cuttings and detailed care instructions to other people who love plants. Evans' book is very easy to use, it is an extremely attractive book with a color photo of each plant, and we consult it all of the time both as a reference and as guide to which plants we would like to add to the house. It is a pleasure just leafing through this book!

This is a great reference book for all levels of houseplant lovers (I have about 30 houseplants spread throughout my small house). I think the most useful part of this book is how the author rates each of the 200+ plants referenced as "Very Easy, Easy, Difficult, Very Difficult." These ratings refer to the ease (or difficulty) in growing these plants indoors. I've already consulted the book probably a dozen times before buying a particular plant, i.e., if I know a plant is going to be "difficult" or "very difficult," I usually think twice about the amount of time and work that might be involved with sustaining the plant.

In addition to ranking the plants like I've described, the author lists common problems associated with each plant, the fixes for these problems, how to proprigate, the average life-span, where to place the plant, how big/small you can expect the plant to get, and much much more information.

I'm a plant lover and consider myself knowledgeable on houseplants, but I get this book out at least once a week to either reference something about my existing plants or plan my next purchase. I enjoyed this book so much, I recently purchased one as a gift for my mother, who is also a plant lover.

If Amazon has this book in stock (it frequently goes on backorder I've noticed), get it. You won't be disappointed.

Very useful reference book!

This book has a short "introductory" section that goes over the basics. I've seen a number of books that have more general information than this one. However, I think this book does an outstanding job of giving very specific information on each plant in its listing of 100+ plants.

Each listing shows a color photo or drawing of a typical specimen. At the top of each listing is a rating from "Very Easy" to "Very Difficult" on the difficulty of caring for this plant. This can be very useful when selecting plants. (It also makes me feel better when I look up a plant that just croaked and found that other people don't have much luck with it either!) Another handy bit of information is the section on "Problems". Each plant listing has a "Problem" section that includes more than just pest problems, but issues like overwatering, light issues, etc. When I get a new plant I like to look it up here so I know what I'm getting into.

This is definitely a great book to have on hand if you have a number of houseplants.

The book also reviews many hotels including Disney's, critiquing each in detail. Includes pricing and some of the ameneties, tips on the best times to travel to Orlando in relation to crowds, weather, and how to negotiate the best packages and pricing.

The candidness of the author and reviewers of the parks contained within this book are remarkable and really helped us plan our trip using our limited time to the best of our advantage.

I highly recommend this book as one to use to plan your Orlando vacation.

Why hasn't someone thought of this subject before?!. Nobody ever thinks about dog compatibiliy based on astrological signs. People consider everthing else such as size, temperment, looks, but not personality compatibility. This book is a fast smart read that answers that question. I'm getting a Pug with a Gemini birthday. Let's go, breeder!!!

I came across this book on myspace and thought the crazy dog lovers have really stretched it this time. As a sane dog lover and closet horoscope whore myself, I must say the concept of Dog Stars got me a bit curious. The photos on their myspace page are exceptional, I was sold. I was quite surprised by how closely this book describes my Cancer dog who is super sensitive, moody, cranky, loving and nurturing all at the same time.

I am a HUGE dog lover and my friend couldn't wait till Christmas to give this book to me. She dogsits for me frequently and knows my dog very well. I thought the book was cute and silly at first until I read my dog's chapter. I was floored! I have a weimie who happens to be a Virgo and it's him, word for word! The compatibility guide for us is also right on! This book is witty and hilarious, a dog lover's must have!
