These boatwomen are indeed remarkable, and superb ambassadors of the Grand Canyon Colorado River corridor. Sure, I'm biased: my first commercial river trip featured two of the profiled women plus another guide noted in the Acknowledgments. All were consummate storytellers, and gender was never an issue. Ms. Teal has an unfortunate habit of occasionally padding her descriptions with platitudes, but these lapses do not significantly diminish the value of this book.

Very inspiring -- a wonderful study

A friend who is a river guide gave me this book. I never really understood the fasination with rafting until I read this. The writing leaves a little to be desired, but the subject matter and the information is very moving.

A friend told me about this book several years ago when I was raft guiding on the Colorado River a little north of the Grand Canyon. I bought the book, and absolutely loved it. As one of the rare breed of female white water rafting guides, it was amazing to read about other women who shared my passion for the river and for the wild places around us. Breaking into the Current is NOT a male-bashing book; it filled with stories that are waiting to be told--stories by and about interesting women who went into a career that few women would consider entering. I loved reading the stories about Lava Falls, the making of Crystal Rapid, and all the others. Each time I return to the book it makes me ache to be on the river yet again.

This book sings.

A few years back on my first trip through the Grand Canyon I was lucky enough to be in a group that included Louise Teal as one of the guides. I bought this book after the trip and read it on the drive home. I was blown away. Her love of the canyon, the river, the people...it all glows from every page. Rafting the Grand is a life-changing experience; and the elements that make it so are all here--captured and expressed by a woman who has become part of the river and vice versa. She tells the stories of the women who 'broke into the current' with humor, sensitivity, respect and love. On top of all that, she is a very talented writer and this book works purely on that basis. If you've ever run the canyon, buy this book. If you have ever wanted to run it, buy this book. If you've got no interest in the canyon or the Colordo river but enjoy good writing about real stuff, buy this book.

a totally enjoyable book

I recently travelled a rafting trip of the canyon and was totally enthralled by the experience. In many ways it changed my life. Reading this book brings back so many memories of what the trip there is really about. I felt a true connection with the women that travelled it before me. The descriptions are so beautiful. This book crosses genders and is simply about a wonderful place and some extrodinary women that have travelled there.

The recipes in this book are great, especially the tomato soup and chicken salad (Chinese). I really liked the simple way in which they were written and the use of readily available ingredients. My favorite part of the book was all the minutae about the restaurant itself. From starting a restaurant, to running it, to buying provisions, to personnel, the book was a fascinating inside look at the business of food. The authors never complained, but they made me realize what a tough business they are in. Hope I can visit Cafe Beaujolais sometime.

This is a great book

Perfect for your cookbook library. Perfect as a special gift.
This intelligently written cookbook features homey, tasty recipes made with ingredients Americans ordinarily have in their kitchens. It uses those ingredients with an eye to twicking the recipes to make them particularly good, yet simple to make. The very best gingerbread recipe I've ever made, and have made over and over as begged-for holiday gifts, at p. 208, is made with fresh-grated ginger. You must try it. The cookbook has helpful commentaries/stories with each recipe that explain their sources and special aspects and that improve your understanding of preparation. These recipes have evidentially been extensively tested and improved to the point of perfection. It is the one cookbook I have had on my shelfing above my kitchen sink for the last 15 years along with my customized recipes.

My favorite cookbook on the shelf!

I spent a lovely weekend on the coast and happened upon CAFE BEAUJOLAIS. After a splended meal, I purchased an autographed copy of this book. The recipes are all easy to follow and each have a history or source. Her spicy buttermilk coffee cake is to die for! Ms. Fox speaks of her cookbook collection and how she "looks up" the same recipe in many different cookbooks. This is where I first understood the concept of recipe comparing. I also enjoyed reading about the goings-on in her resturant. This is a fabulous book!

This is one of the greatest books in the universe. I think one of the funniest parts was when Hank and Drover were stuck out on the porch and Drover got the hiccups. I also liked the part where Hank told Rip and Snort they had Creeping Termanal Entropy and Rip called it Creepum Termite Hoopum-Hikum. I didn't like the part where Hank made Muggs fight with Rip and Snort. I like Buster, Muggs, and the "other two" (my little sister and I call them Fleabag and Scrap). In short, this was another good Hank the Cowdog Book. I can't wait for the next one.

... I will always keep a library of Linda's books. This is my favorite of her Linda Devlin books, and ties with being my all-time favorite by this author with No Angel's Grace - which I read once a year. Keep those fingers flying, Linda. And if you use yet another pen name, please let all us fans know so we can snatch up your books. Linda will never let you down in the way she builds her characters. They are persons of strength and loyalty, though every one vastly different. She has a true gift! You will never forget Daniel Cash and he'll always hold a special place in your heart! Get it, read it, keep it!

Cash, the runt, at five-eleven? What a nasty tempered yet heart-broken son of a gun.

This just had to be. The only one that could tame this renegade had to be the one that broke his heart. And give him a family.

Nadine at 32, is certainly his woman, and Cash at 33, refuses to be her man. Too dangerous, to much of a reputation to live down, too much of a killer.

Yet you could still see that he hadn't killed his soul, yet. He had been under the influence of the other Rock Creek five. Bonded loyalty and constant friendship kept all six men from destruction. The tales of the Rock Creek Six should become classics -- Hey guys, where are the movies [although they would be hard to cast].

Nadine and JD ended up turning Daniel Cash's life upside down.
With some help from Jed and Hannah, little Fiona, Sullivan and Eden's daughter and JD's ambitions.

I will say I was disappointed not to find that that darn tub was not made of gold. chuckle! chuckle!

Great characters, Great stories, just great all the way around -- enough beer to go with the froth in Cash -- great way to end? the Rock Creek Saga [more please]

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED -- fantastic keepers. Try them you will definitely like them.

Nate's my favorite then Reese! Cash is hard to bond to. ...

The Rock Creek 6 is an innovative literary undertaking. It's about 6 soldiers in a special civil war unit, all of whom have emotional scars that they must heal. Lori Handeland wrote 3 books incl.the Nate and Reese stories; Linda Devlin wrote 3 incl the finale hero, Daniel Cash. I liked the story line LD chose for Cash, but I never quite got to like Cash himself. He was less authentic and less reachable than the other rock creek heros. In fairness to Cash, I prefer LH's writing style over LD's which could be part of my problem with the book. At any rate it is wonderful to see these 6 tougher than tough men governed by loving wives and babies all around them. Truly heartwarming.

Cash is the final installment in the Rock Creek Six series, about a band of six former Confederate soldiers who have only their bond of loyalty to each other... until one-by-one... they overcome their troubled pasts to find a future in love.

Daniel Cash is the deadliest one of the bunch. He excells at womanizing and gambling, and has a well-known and well-deserved name as a gunfighter. Hurt deeply by the woman he once loved, his bitterness toward "nice" girls spills over into everything he does and is reflected in the cold lifelessness of his eyes. But, throughout the series, the reader gets glimpses of something deeper: his loyalty to friends, his sense of humor, and his pained heart. In the book, Cash, he finally finds peace by facing his past - in the flesh... whether he likes it or not - and learning that he doesn't have to face the future alone. The climactic confrontation gives a wonderful indepth look at the life of a professional gunfighter and the resulting sacrifices.

It's an enjoyable end to a super western romance series. I just wish there had been more than six!

A wonderful ending to this series...

Wow! I can't believe this series has come to an end. I'm going to miss these guys & their families. At the beginning of this book you meet Nadine who has come to Rock Creek to ask Cash for his help with her son. Nadine is Cash's one & only true love from his past & she arrives with a son that he soon finds out is his own. As Cash & Nadine reveal their secrets they find themselves needing each other once again but Cash is not willing to put them in harm's way by giving them his name. Read the book to find out what happens. You won't be disappointed in this book. You see all the other five from this series in this book quite a bit & it's a wonderful closing to this series. Wish there were more. Read in order Rock Creek Six: #1 Reese #2 Sullivan #3 Rico #4 Jed #5 Nate & #6 Cash. Enjoy!

Hooray for Ms. Gentry! It is about time someone recreated the hell the Cheyenne were forced to endure. I also liked Glory, instead of the petite virgin most authors create, she is an average woman, someone we can relate too. Two Arrows was realistic as well as the other warriors, she really brought them to life. I cried, the events were based on actual history and I knew that, her writing brought vivid images to my mind. Another part that broke my heart was a section about a little starving Cheyenne girl in which Glory gave her a candy stick. The girl later bestowed Glory a bracelet in return of her jester. I really appreciate that Ms. Gentry researched the Cheyenne's upbringing and added it to this story. The love between Glory and Two Arrows was so powerful, leaving a physical sensation in one's heart.

A second chance that brought me to tears

This was my first Georgina Gentry novel, but almost needless to say it won't be my last. It takes you back to Fort Reno, Indian Territory in 1878 and tells the true story of how a group of northern Cheyenne went back to their native lands. A trek of 1500 miles largely mastered on foot and partly in bad weather. Interwowen in this true story is the tale of two fictive caracters, the drunken army scout Two Arrows who was once a celebrated Dog Soldier among his people and divorcee Glory Halstead. Both of them struggle to regain a place in society and proud, headstrong Glory finds herself taken captive by Two Arrows as the indians decides to leave for home. During the weeklong ordeal Glorys feelings towards Two Arrows slowly change from hate to admiration and finally love.
The novel is very well written, the secondary characters, like captain David Krueger who loves Glory and wows to free her and kill Two Arrows no matter what are vividly described.
The book had me turning pages and towards the end had me sobbing so hard I had to pause to blow my nose and dry the tears from my cheeks :o)
WOW !
This book is a true keeper and a magnificent lovestory that also sheats light on the ordeal that the northern Cheyenne went through as they tried to return back home.

I absolutely cherish this book and can highly recommend it.

This is more than a heart- gripping romance. It is accurate to history, and so exciting you can not put it down!
This author does an excellent job making you feel like part of the scene. She takes you on the 1500 mile trek that the Northern Cheyenne made in their fight for freedom. The characters are vivid, their struggle is heart- breaking and yet heroic. Many of "The People" in this story will become special to you. Each battle will have you glued to the pages. I found myself actually holding my breathe as I read at times!
The romance is moving and totally consuming. The love between the characters is radiant. Also, you will enjoy some very steamy and daring love scenes.
I hated to see this book end! I'll definitely be checking out more of this author's novels.

I got the large print copy of this book and liked the cover of that book better.
I liked the fact that the heroine was not your typical one. She was a dark-haired woman, over thirty, strong, independent, and had a job. Glory, aka Proud One, was the type of woman that makes reading these type of books worth it.
Two Arrows was a good hero. Even though he's an alcholic whose been through a lot in his life. He and Glory gets a second chance through their love for each other.
I have a strong interest in the Native American culture yet I don't read too many NA romance books because I don't like the way the NA's are betrayed. This book gave me insight to what Native Americans went through and a glimpse at their history.
Two complaints that I have is that the author used the word "sword" to describe the male parts and I thought she could have found a better word than that. I also felt the author could have written an epilogue instead of rushing the ending.
The love scenes were good and was more about love than trying to be erotic. On a whole, I would recommend this book, I think you will enjoy it.

I live in the same town as this author, and have experienced first-hand her delectible creations. Not only are these recipes extraordinary, they are makable and edible. True gourmet without requiring ingredients from unknown Mediterranean villages. It is very difficult to bake at 7000+ feet, and these work (each recipe has altitude instructions if necessary). Amazingly, I emailed Letty for help with cream puffs (not in the book; mine were collapsing--not only did she return my email, she offered to taste-test them. Top notch chef, person, book. A rancher knows hard work, rough times and dedication in trying to make it all come together as he makes his living on the ranch he loves so well. Tommy knows this first hand as he tries desperately to get the little calf that decides to run from the herd. He is Thankful that his neighbors and friends are there to help with taking the rest of the herd to their destination as he follows the stray. He thinks of his family warm in their home, missing them as he is out in the cold trying to bring in the lone calf.

Tommy is surprised when he stumbles across a family in need out in the middle of nowhere and of course he jumps right in trying to help in a trying situation.

This is a must read, Mr. Voss knows how to write a warm tale of what family and dedication is. Christmas on the Mesa is a must read any time of the year. I'm looking forward to more stories from Mr. Voss.

Small miracles happen, most are never brought to light. It was more than chance that lead Tommy and Patch into that very clearing on the mesa at that very moment in time. And as with most human kindness that seeks nothing in return the giver is rewarded tenfold as was Tommy Loving. A Christmas story of the highest order, the author captures the true Spirit of the Season. The good thing is I didn't have to wait until the 25th of December to experience it too.
Good job, Mr. Voss.

Ever fall in love with a cow ... calf?

>> The calf busted out of the pinion pines in an explosion of snow, bawling for its mother at the top of its lungs. His tail stuck straight in the air with the top curled around to make a perfect number nine as it ran for all it was worth. <<

Resistance is futile. You're a mamma now.

Any time, in my mind, I can sing, "I'll be hooooommme for Christmas..." and hear the ching, ching, ching of a million bells announcing a sleigh ride in the snow. Or, here's this scene:

>>Instead here he was following this maverick calf through the pinion and cedar trees in the snow and freezing weather.... Wind blew the snow off of the top of the cliff and down the neck of his pile lined denim coat. He turned his coat collar up a little higher, tugged his hat lower on his head, and pulled his knit scarf snug to help keep out the cold.... The trail crested over the rim of the mesa on to the wide open area on top. Snow was drifting around the twisted trunks of the few juniper trees that managed to take root up on the mesa top. <<

That's how a writer puts you into his world. Whatever season, or reason for resistance, you won't have trouble riding with Tommy, then sharing the rewards.

Can appreciation of a journey's end, even in a short story, bring a throat lump and brimming tears? Sure. Here. Now. Why didn't I guess what was coming? This author has a way of creating a character you'll go along with without much contemplation, allowing the surprises to warm your Christmas craving heart in heat of July.

Cool story with warm tides, right when you need `em!

I started this book and didn't want to set it down till the last page. The plot is strong and well developed with an ending that is less than predictable. The main character, Will Clay, is engaging, true to life, and too well developed to be contained on the page.

I was recommended this book by a friend, even though I am not a western fan and loved it. Some day it could make an amazing movie, but I only hope that this will not be (or is not) the only novel following these characters. Even if it is, I look forward to laying my hands on any other material by Shifren.

Clay's Justice took me by surprise. I had never heard of David Shifren before, and I didn't know what to expect. Wow!, what a novel! This is a wonderful story that reminded me of the classic westerns from the 1950's. A good, clean written western with a strong hero Will Clay, who is looking for a new life, and when he finds a family that he cares about and they need his help, the bad guys better watch out. Clay's Justice is a modern classic western, that takes the reader on a journey that you will not forget. Marvelous!

Nice book but not quite what I expected

The book starts out with a nice section on Mr. Collier's great grandfather Joseph then moves on into a little section on Colorado history (I assume all of the old photos were done by Joseph Collier). That's interesting stuff, and it's followed by the bulk of the book which seems to be several sections covering, for the most part, several Colorado mining towns. For each town you get some history and at least one then (1870's-1880's)and one now (1990's-2000 or so) photo, each of these is captioned. The pictures are pretty clear and usually very well positioned matched (Grant Collier makes note of one where he couldn't get the right spot)which can be hard to do.
About the only complaint I can come up with is that I'd like to have had more town and scenic photos to look at, this is a nice book.

This is a great mix of old photos, new photos, and history. It makes a great companion piece to the more popular "Colorado 1870 - 2000" and in some ways it is superior to that book. For one thing, "Colorado Yesterday and Today" costs half as much as the Jackson/Fielder book. Also, Collier takes the time to talk about each and every place that is featured in his collection of photographs, something which is sorely missing in the other book.

Collier's re-shoots are right on the money, and when they are not, he tells us (access issues pop up from time to time). The connection to his great-great-grandfather is touching. Most importantly, this is a book that you can read and enjoy. It is not a ponderous 'picture book' that won't fit in your bookcase.

Incredible historical record

Although most people who live in Colorado have a vague idea of how much the state has changed in the past century, to see it shown so starkly in beautiful photographs like this is fascinating. Grant Collier has created an amazing testimonial to the march of history and the turbulent growth of the Centennial State. Collier's love of his subject is obvious on every page and the reader can't help but be drawn into a story, not only of Colorado, but of Collier's search to understand his stoic great-grandfather, the famous pioneer photographer Joseph Collier. Buy it!

Grant Collier's 'Colorado, Yesterday and Today' is an exceptional work in an exceptional period of time. Not often have I seen such dedication to detail. This dedication is evident in Grant Collier's testamonial to his great grand-father Joseph. What a piece of work this book is! Not only are the photographs accurately re-taken, but Grant also provides short details that accompany each section. I find this attention to detail quite refeshing. Not like other related books on the market. I am recommending this book to all of my friends. I do not wish to bore you any further with my writing. Just buy Grant Collier's book(s) and let him show you what he is capable of.

This is an outstanding book for those of us who are fascinated with what time can do to buildings or even whole towns. I have already read this fascinating book 3 times and each time I find something interesting that I missed the first time. Buy this book, you won't be sorry.

Handling Persecution by Faith

After LIVING ON THE RAGGED EDGE, COMBAT fAITH had also been a very influential book in my life in my personal pentecost in 1986. The government had been trying to brainwash me into becoming a homosexual so that I would fit in better with the people in Chemistry. But I would not give in because of the Holy Spirit and faith in God.
Hal had discussed how tha faith of POW's had enabled them to withstand brainwashing by their captors. Except that this is America we're talking about and not North Korea!
Hal also witnessed about how God had striken dead a college professor who had tried to block him from speaking on his campus. I had looked back at my life and I also could see that God has dispatched several of my enemies to the grave-including some big name politicains or their relatives. I began looking in the Bible and could see a precidence for this in Scripture. God is no respector of persons, the Bible says.
Also the thing about Moses having lived in obscurity as a shepherd for 40 years after having killed an Egyptian government official and having fled Egypt as being a time of testing and character formation, also impressed me. Somwhow, I don't believe that God is through with my life. Maybe I will live to fight better another day?!

Essential Spiritual Guidance for the Struggling Believer

In Combat Faith, clearly the author's finest effort of his prolific career, Hal Lindsey has produced the ultimate work that clearly illuminates the historical and spiritual connections between the Old and the New Testaments. Those of the Jewish faith should read it not only as an aid to help them understand their own faith better, but also with the purpose of gaining greater understanding regarding the question of why Christians place such a high value on the Old Testament. And believers in the New Testament will find themselves challenged and refreshingly inspired to renew their commitment to their faith and journey with God, which is no small feat in our day and age. Yet Hal Lindsey has done all of this here with explosive agility and humility. No amount of hyperbole is needed to convey the value of this book-a mere sampling of the various chapters will transport the reader on a journey that takes him from the arid desert of Sinai where a group of 3 million wanderers struggle to believe in a God who has proven His love for them significantly to a man who's death on a cross 2,000 years ago solidifed, once and for all time, that the same God is just as concerned and committed to all of His creation. Combat Faith offers more than merely an elucidation of the oft-pondered and plundered subject of faith; it is virtually a how-to manual that shows, through example after enlightening example, the specific steps that should be taken in order to have the most profound and fulfilling experience with the Creator of the Universe. It's an adventure that will stay with you forever.

"The issue of faith pervades every aspect of our relationship with God and our service for Him," writes Hal Lindsey. Faith is given to us to be used and this book helps you to use it effectively. Consider Lindsey's comments on Hebrews 11:11 "By faith Abraham, even though he was past age--and Sarah herself was barren--was enabled to become a father because he considered Him faithful who had made the promise." Lindsey notes, "The more we learn about God, the more we become certain of the things for which we hope." He says our confidence in God grows as we know Him better. He goes on to add that learning about God is a result of spending time with Him.

His discussion on the faith and works issue is helpful. Along similar lines he talks about resting from works and not being subject to the law.

On the Providence of God: "God never allows anything to happen in a beliver's life by accident." While on that subject he mentions that God's power is released when we realize we are helpless on our own to bring about God's will. As most experienced Christians realize, "Sometimes God's leading for our life doesn't make sense at all from the human viewpoint." As one reads the Bible, one sees this has historically been the case, but God's ways are higher than our ways and he knows what is best.

This book promotes God dependency, not man self-sufficency. It achieves the goal of the author, i.e., it teaches you how to use the gift of faith God has given you.

This book gets to what is essential in our walk with God

This book in the stylings of Lindsay has to be his best. It teaches apart from anything else what is needed by us, and what is wanted by our God. Total faith and dependency on him. Lean on him, despite of what we see. God said" he would not leave nor forsake us." he did not say everything would always be pleasant. take hold of this faith, find the biggest Goliath in your life. And slay it by the confession of your faith, and the power of our Almighty father.
