This hefty chunk of book is a career spanning selection of cartoons and doodles from the bizarre pen of William Steig. Plenty of these illustrations and gag cartoons first appeared in the New Yorker. All of them are fantastic. Any individual page in this one should be enough to convince any sensible person that he is among the best of the New Yorker artists, his only competition is Saul Steinberg. Other good points: John Updike introduction and good biographical information by Lee Lorenz. Swooning lovers, expressive animals, fairy tales, anxiety. See also: Abel's Island, Sylvester and the Magic Pebble, the Steig Album. Seth's It's a Good Life if You Don't Weaken is a great comic book with deep influence from the New Yorker. Choice.

The spots in this book are amazing. What' more, there are over 1,330 of them. They cover everything: fruit, aircraft, people, animals, buildings, products, oysters, J.D. Salinger, industry, the decline of Western Civilization, sports and women's shoes. The spots chosen are of the highest quality and will definitely satisfy. Good book.

Illustrations that illuminate with the truth
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-09
This is one of my favorite book on the sermon illustrations. The word of God used as illustration to enlighten and illuminate the passage at hand is double blessing for the hearers AND preachers alike.

While modern illustrations gather their anecdotes from newspapers, movies, stories, and real life biographies, this book solely gathers illustrations from the Holy Bible, which is timeless. Since the Bible is relevant in any age, so the illustrations from the Bible is also relevant.

1. The book is nicely divided into topics (1800 topical headings) and arranged alphabetically and numbered (10,029 in all). And most of the topics are also cross-referenced (30,000 of them) for similar topics as well so that you can glean various Biblical illustrations.
2. It has a "textual index" at the end of the book for further usefulness. Every Biblical illustration is indexed with passage reference and number, so you can check how the passage is used.
3. Fonts can be bothersome however. It is not easy on your eyes. The book was printed before computer age, so the letters seemed to be typed.

All in all, I heartily recommend this book to any preacher or writer.

It is simply wonderous for pastors to use in their sermons, it is excellent source for giving illustrations. DL Moody was one of greatest revival mover in America Religious history. It is more fitting that pastors use the treasury of a great evangelist. It shall aid you in your sermon greatly. I used it in my sermons and the audience enjoyed the illustrations greatly. It is a must for pastors, buy one for your pastors!!

Children's Writer's & Illustrators Market is a choice bundle of help for writers in this genre. So many writers give up on trying to place fiction for adults and fall back to writing for a younger audience because it is easier. It isn't. Today's publishers in this field insist on better quality and finer tuning than ever before. This book provides writers with the specific needs of the major players in this field. There are 850 places to sell your work with more information on specific markets than any other book I know of. It is also great for illustrators. A real bonus is the informative articles and strategies to help writers make money with their writing. Tale Wins Literary Agency specializes in representing children's book authors; I ask every author we have to thoroughly study Children's Writer's & Illustrators Market.

This particular issue has a feature interview with Judy Blume, one of my favorite writers. She wrote ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT'S ME, MARGARET, LETTERS TO JUDY, and FOREVER.

Comprehensive info for artists, illustrators & crafters
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 9 total.

Inspirational. Covers a wide range of subjects in detail not found easily else where. For example, as well as discussing techniques, tools and materials used in each area, details are also given for suppliers of many of the materials mentioned. Most chapters have colour photo step-by-step demonstations of the basic techniques under discussion and each chapter is also accompanied by fabulous photos of various illustrators work in the subject area. There is also an extremely helpful chapter on photographing your "illustration/artwork".

I particularly enjoyed the chapters on paper and fabric, and in regard to the fabric info, would recommend this book to cloth doll makers. There are many useful hints, wonderful photos AND a demo of Lisa Lichtenfels "creation" process of her Bette Midler piece. Ellen Rixford also discusses and demo's her techniques, which are equally exciting.

Although my interests lie with fabrics, I thoroughly enjoyed this book as a whole, and would now have a go at a number of the other techniques detailed. With the fantastic colour photos through out the book, I still re-read this book regularly, if not for inspiration, just for pure enjoyment!!

A great buy! One of those book you will always keep!
