we often do not have the chance to hear a person from our past but this book is a lyrical transcription of miss amelia earhart putnam. these are her words and observations and she lets us into her protected world to glimpse her passion. i recommend this book for anyone and everyone, the young child who seeks self esteem for the rough years of adolescence, the young adult trying to make their own way and even the well seasoned, this is a story of trimuph, something we are lacking in todays tabloid world.

"A Fun Read About America's Flying Sweetheart, AE"
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-23
"The Fun of It: Random Records of My Own Flying and of Women in Aviation", by Amelia Earhart - Brewer, Warren & Putnam, NY 1932. HC - 213 pages, a list of Aviation Books By Women, and includes 31 B & W photographs, (many full-page and of good quality). 8 1/2" x 5 1/2"

Dedicated "To the Ninety Nines", this is the 2nd of 3 books Amelia wrote, the 1st being "20 Hrs. 40 Min." after her 1928 Atlantic crossing, whilst the 3rd was "Last Flight" in 1937 on her failed attempt to circumnavigate the globe at the equator.

Herein, AE writes largely a discursive autobiography, reveals her visions of the past, present and future for aviation, impels a strong calling for feminism/equalism of working sexes, ending with a final section about her 1932 solo flight across the Atlantic. AE is quick to point out much of her acclaim is/was due to contribution of others - that, as a girl or woman, she received a luxurience of acclaim, and reveals a modesty not often admitted by others. There is, thoughtfully, and purposefully, only minor mention of her husband George Putnam. AE provides a modest 'tour de force' on the history of flying: -- from balloons, dirigibles, to flying at time of Wright Bros., Dec. 17, 1903 and up to the early 1930's with speculation about supersonic stratoshperic flight, space ships, rocket engines, giant airlines, etc. and discussion of her flights in autogyros which predated heliocopters.

What we find in AE's writing is her directed appeal to encourage women's involvement in each and every phaase of aviation (mechanics, pilotage, meteorology, sales, production, and design): -- AE promotes aviation as an important industry still in its infancy for cargo, mail, transportation and 'for the fun of it'. AE is a skilled writer, making good analogies for her adiences/readers to follow concepts in a book largely free of error, written before 'spell-checker', etc. It is non-technical and should make for a wide reading audience.

The best word I can think of to describe this book is just plain "FUNNY". This book is a treasure trove of funny jokes, anecdotes, work place humor, sports and a whole lot more with 23 chapters of good clean humor. I couldn't believe how much "stuff" is in it. If you are looking for some humor to start off your speech or something funny to end it with or just insert a wake-up story somewhere in the middle, this book is a must have ready resource. There are nearly 400 (398) pages of fine type in this comprehensive collection of all kinds of humor.

You can't go wrong with it. I put mine in a prominent place in my library for my next public speaking event.

Have purchased both pre k and kindergarten and love them. Main reason is the binder. My daughter doesn't have to hold it open with one hand and write with the other. It sits flat on the table. It has may great activities as well but being a binder alone would make me recommend it over all the other books out there.

A GREAT tool to have at home!

This book is great tool to have at home, before AND during the duration of your child's kindergarten year. There are TONS of great worksheets in this book, and its been very fun and useful to help my daughter transition into Kindergarten and to help the learning process during Kindergarten by pulling out activities to do that corresponded w/the what her class was learning during a given week. A++++++

H.R. Hiher is definately one of the greatest artists of our time. His images transcend time and space and provoke so many thoughts using beautifully crafted mechanical landscapes and disturbing robot-like human specimens.

This is the prime book for the fans who are into Giger's work, but don't have the cash to invest in his larger[]books, or don't yet know if they want to. It covers his earliest work in underground newspapers to his involvment with "Alien" and beyond. It lists all the exhibitions up until 2001, all the material he ever published, plenty of his best known artworks plus some that are lesser known. From his life in Chur to his marriage to Mia and his thoughts of airbrushing, this book has everything a Giger fan could ask for.

The Benford Lexicon, now in a new edition, is simply put, an absolutely essential work for anyone who wishes to understand Gilbert and Sullivan. By using this book, the shellac of years of tradition can be stripped off of performances, and the true wit and beauty of Gilbert, as reflected in the Music of Sulivan, can shine through. It also is quite helpful to the audience member in understanding some of the clever, although now not fully topical, references in these works. (Capt. Shaw, Army-Navy Stores, Knightsbridge, Camberwell a Bower, Peckham an Arcadian Vale... and so forth..)

A Must-Have Resource for All Savoyards

This book is the first place I turn to with any language question in the wonderful world of Gilbert & Sullivan. Mr. Benford writes clearly and consisely, with a delightful (and occasionally wince-inducing) wit. Highly recommended.

Wonderful 60s book
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-09-24
First, the best thing about this book in my opinion, is the price! 13 bux for a hard cover with full-coloured, glossy page reference book is just great value for money. Moreover you don't get to see advertisements like these anymore. This book makes me wish that I was born in the 60s!

Automobiles, undergarments (love the maidenbra lol), fashion, rock posters, foodstuffs, movie posters, electrical appliances (which are ingenius in its own right), cosmetic adverts... nostalgia, kitsch, witty descriptions and visual pleasure, as well as an obsession with space travel & hippy culture. It's really fun to flip through the book, I'm sure the graphic artists in the heydays had fun making them too (note: many adverts in the 60s are good ol' hand painted works of art). Only thing left to do now is to release a 2nd book 'cuz I sure don't mind more.

The Best Choice for 60's Ads

I'm writing this review to warn those that might be trying to decide between this book and the two other Taschen books of 60's ads- All-American Ads of the 60's (Midi Series) and All-American Ads of the 60's (Icons Series)- that all three contain basically the same content. The Midi series volume is huge and contains the most ads, but is also the most expensive. The Icons series is the most abbreviated and inferior to The Golden Age of Advertising, in that this edition (the one you're looking at now) is hardback and contains the best and funniest of the ads.

Great book about a great era

Review Date: 2006-07-01
Mr. Soaday has not only managed to compile an outstanding and much-needed catalogue for collectors, but has also written an insightful study of an era as seen through the lens of popular illustrations and literature. The tone of this book as poignant, playful and packed with information about a time in American history that, without Mr. Soladay's excellent book, could be Gone and Forgotten.

Mr. Soladay has written a very useful bibliography of American novels and illustrations. He manages to give the user a feel for the era through the books and illustrations of the time. The price listing at the end of the book would be extremely useful for collectors of novels of this era.

This is a book that libraries should own if they don't already. There is no other resource that can give you the same information in such a quick and easy to read manner as "Gone and Forgotten." What this tome may lack in illustrations, it more than makes up for in details. These details allow the user to see the illustration without actually seeing it.

This is an excellent reference book for those who are familiar with the Picasso artworks and want to find an English translation of each sonnet that Gongora wrote. I had researched via the internet for the translations of these 20 poems, but came up empty, until I received this exquisite book. A beautiful formatted book with large text and the Picasso artworks are the same size as the original aquatint etchings. A Must for all Picasso collectors and art/literature appreciators. It has helped me tremendous in my art field.

It is a pleasure to review a book that combines the beauty of the artistic word with the elegance of the artist's hand. In this beautiful work, the reader immerses himself in the translations of the sonnets of Luis de Gongora y Argote and portraits by Pablo Picasso. A copy of each sonnet, rewritten by Picasso is dramatically seen with portraits and embellishments. The book is reproduced to scale and a must for lovers of the arts.

I think this is bit of an extravagance to use these as postcards, much better to cut them out and mount your favorites in a picture frame, which would (in the language of the time) "...make a swell addition to any den". Mine would be the eleven by Gil Elvgren, the master of this sort of art. The thirty paintings in this postcard book are all shown, with hundreds more, in the inexpensive 448 page 'The Great American Pin-up' by Charles Martignette and Louis Meisel and there is also a larger more comprehensive edition by the same authors.
